page 2 june 2011 c adam zeni clay 4th grade and his wife jen welcomed the birth of their second child at 8:26 am on monday may 23 addison claire zeni weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and was 21 inches long addison has a brother evan age 4 jajs thank you and congratula ons to the following staff members who are celebra ng anniversaries in june and july of 5 or 10 years since joining the staff of the ephrata area school district 10 years joy darkes clay principal enrica gerhart akron principal steve machonis computer tech 5 years joane eby high school principal www.easdpa.org g b thank you t middle school youth peace council collects dona ons for humane league members of the middle school youth peace council ypc recently collected dona ons of pet supplies for the humane league of lancaster according to ypc members the humane league is seeing an increased need for their services due to the difficult economy the students created posters lis ng items to donate including pet food leashes toys bowls and peanut bu er which is used to fill several types of pet toys as a special treat youth peace council is a studentrun organiza on supervised by middle school guidance counselors kerri batdorf and alane mowbray ypc members par cipate in about six ac vi es every year including delivering cookies to local first responders and making holiday cards for soldiers serving overseas middle school ypc members also work with the high school ypc members on several service projects pickonasenior day raises $150 for cys c fibrosis high school student council recently sponsored pickonasenior day and raised $150 for the cys c fibrosis founda on underclassmen have the opportunity to purchase a senior for the day they can make the senior dress in a crazy way within the dress code some seniors were painted as the incredible hulk or a smurf some short students dressed as willy wonka s umpa lumpas one student bought a pair of seniors to make mario and luigi nintendo video game characters several students made their senior dress outside their comfort zone in dark gothic clothing or as a sporty jock the event has become an ephrata high school tradi on and a fun way to send the seniors out at the end of the school year con nued on page 9

page 3 june 2011 eis thjec marcie webber 6th grade language arts served as a judge for the oral component of the 24th annual pennsylvania envirothon a natural resource educa onal compe on sixtyfive teams from throughout the state competed the teams were given a wri en scenario based on a current environmental issue this year s topic was estuaries teams had to present solu ons and defend their proposed solu ons by explaining how they would improve pennsylvania wildlife forests soil and water teams were required to target three land use groups residen al recrea onalgolf course and commercial/quarry and propose ways to reduce storm water runoff and pollu on improving the water quality of a local creek teams had 10 minutes to make an oral presenta on and another 10 minutes to answer ques ons ttyuws submitted by allie bricker highland music for several years i have had the opportunity to share my daughter sara anne s story with district staff during annual united way presenta ons i shared how my daughter who is living with au sm and our family have benefited from their services our family sincerely thanks you for your generosity each year i have a new and exci ng update to share about sara anne most au s c children get stuck on certain topics sara anne is currently stuck on willie nelson she especially likes his song if you got the money honey i showed her willie nelson s picture on his website and no ced that he would be playing in york on may 30 we sent mr nelson an email to share with him that sara anne is a child living with au sm and that he is her favorite singer we also told him that she sings if you got the money honey so much that we all have it memorized his songs put a smile on her face that we haven t seen for a long me we asked if he would be able to play sara anne s favorite song at his york concert about two weeks ago i received an email from lana willie nelson s daughter she said that our email was forwarded to her she told her dad about sara anne and he wanted to meet her and our family when he was in york they gave us the v.i.p treatment we met with willie and his sister and daughter sara anne gave him a dog tag with the au sm awareness puzzle piece it had her picture on the front and on the back it said willie nelson s biggest fan is sara anne bricker he put it on immediately as you can see in the picture we are so amazed by his kindness country singer willie nelson and sara anne bricker

page 4 june 2011 cscse clay elementary school 3rd grade students wrapped up their water unit with stream study day throughout the unit students learned the importance of taking care of the waterways in their community to improve the quality of water in the chesapeake bay to help reinforce their classroom learning the students visited the property of teacher suzi rehm clay 3rd grade in ephrata township to par cipate in several handson environmental ac vi es students entered middle creek stream to research they received a lesson in how to properly plant the white pine seedling each student received a er a lunch break sheri horner elementary math coach taught students about math pa erns in nature and they learned about watersheds and buffer zones which help keep stream water clean as it travels to the chesapeake bay water quality they found a variety of macro invertebrates which demonstrated good water quality they layered ice cubes ice cream lemonlime soda food coloring and sprinkles in a cup to create edible examples of aquifers they learned about bluebirds and how to make a bluebird box and about different types of wildlife found around streams in lancaster county assfp akron 4th grade students recently completed their study of famous pennsylvanians each student selected a famous pennsylvanian to research and learn about his or her early life adult life what made him or her famous and some interes ng facts about the person they created a display with a poster meline and props to represent their person students wrote a speech about the research they gathered and memorized it for wax museum anthony ecenrode portrayed william day penn thank you to akron staff members jane donahue librarian heidi harnish learning support christel huxley esl rachel mar n reading emily rossman 4th grade kristen rubeck 4th grade and carol vankirk 4th grade for guiding students through the unit tyler connelly christopher fulton and meagan marquis shared the role of johnny appleseed.

page 8 june 2011 hscsmo students in carlyn fryberger s founda ons of chemistry classes monitored ozone at ground level by tes ng vehicle emissions the study was funded by an educa on grant awarded by the pennsylvania department of environmental protec on to study the concentra on of groundlevel ozone in ephrata ozone is a molecule containing three oxygen atoms that can cause respiratory and other health problems in high concentra ons ozone is primarily formed at groundlevel on hot sunny windless days when there is an abundance of vehicle exhaust students researched ozone through readings and a web quest created a podcast about ozone and tested vehicle emissions for chemicals that junior irena riley positions a device to test cause ozone they tested vehicles for carbon monoxide sulfur dioxide vehicle emissions and nitrogen dioxide all pollutants that contribute to ozone forma on next year honors chemistry ii students will monitor ozone levels of bus emissions to determine what weather condi ons favor ozone forma on they will present their findings in a poster presenta on when the study has been completed esws throughout the school year josh shortuse hs science took his environmental science students on several excursions that e to the curriculum they visit three loca ons along the cocalico creek north and south of ephrata borough and in tom grater park they looked for changes in the creek from season to season and compared that informa on with informa on gathered in previous years they also took several walking trips to tom grater park to observe changes in the creek it would seem that there have been no drama c changes in the creek it just gets too much runoff overall i m pleased with the data we are collec ng but there is always room for improvement josh said he hopes to be able to share the data with ephrata borough officials in the fall which helps to raise residents awareness of the impact they are having on local waterways environmental science classes also visited tent city during the ephrata fair to discuss and see how the event impacts the creek par cipated in an energy trip and visited the ephrata borough drinking water and wastewater treatment plants the energy trip gave the students an opportunity to visit the lancaster transfer sta on and landfill a wind turbine and the hydroelectric power plant at safe harbor lastly they kayaked a sec on of the susquehanna river and conducted stream studies of the river seniors katie peifer and kayla fritz look for bugs in the nymph stage macroinvertebrates in the cocalico creek the bugs help indicate the overall health of the creek photo provided by jeremy bischoff hs tech ed

page 9 june 2011 g b t 2 cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the united states 70,000 worldwide a defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick sticky mucus that obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food and clogs the lungs and leads to lifethreatening lung infections middle school event raises more than $2,100 for relay for life middle school student council under the direc on of mike miller 8th grade language arts sponsored a teen fair at the end of may this year s event was co chaired by 8th grader brooklyn thomas and 7th grader bri any johnson the event included music food games of skill a dunk tank filled with staff and administrators and a car smash with a car provided by hagy auto parts and towing inc proceeds from this year s event totaled more than $2,100 and were donated to the 7th grade relay for life team middle school students and staff par cipate in relay for life middle school 7th grade team m mission minded students achieved greatness in service when they par cipated in the american cancer society relay for life on june 10 and 11 at conestoga valley high school fortyfive middle school students and eight staff par cipated including gangi cucciuffo principal cathy erickson social studies tom ferrari tech ed josh haupt science ashley macadams learning support deb machonis media center eric mar n math and rachel young language arts gangi cucciuffo ms principal prepares to defend himself in the dunk tank team m students were challenged to think of a way to help others many of the students and their families have felt the devasta ng effects of cancer so the team decided to focus their energy toward raising money to fight the disease monthly team m mee ngs provided a forum for students to share personal stories of the impact cancer has had on them and to brainstorm ideas of how to raise funds car washes bake sales yard sales wristband sales and other dona ons from family and friends helped the team raise more than $7,200 the relay requires teams to have a representa ve on the track throughout the 24hour event while wai ng for their shi s students stayed busy playing photo provided by rachel young volleyball and kickball throwing frisbee dancing and playing board games other teams were impressed and thankful to see so many young people involved in this worthwhile effort students are excited to start planning the efforts of 2012 check out the giving back page on the district website at www.easdpa.org/district/givingback.html.

page 10 june 2011 amepch with the recent tragedies in the southeast of flooding and tornados we should take note and prepare ourselves what would you do if there was no food water or medical assistance it was a lesson to all of us about the necessity of being personally prepared whether we live in hurricaneprone areas or in places where floods or tornadoes may strike it is important to make a disaster plan for yourself and your family before you need it then if disaster strikes remain calm and pa ent put your plan into ac on check for injuries give first aid and get help for seriously injured people listen to your ba erypowered radio for news and instruc ons evacuate if advised to do so wear protec ve clothing and sturdy shoes check for damage in your home use flashlights or chems cks do not light matches or turn on electrical switches if you suspect structural damage check for fires fire hazards and other household hazards sniff for gas leaks star ng at the water heater if you smell gas or suspect a leak turn off the main gas valve open windows and get everyone outside quickly shut off any other damaged u li es clean up spilled medicines bleaches gasoline and other flammable liquids immediately confine or secure your pet call your family contact do not use the telephone again unless it is a lifethreatening emergency check on your neighbors especially elderly or disabled persons make sure you have an adequate water supply in case service is shut off stay away from downed power lines hint keep this list with your survival back pack so it is easily located in an emergency it takes only a few hours to prepare a survival back pack for yourself and your family should the me come when you need to grab it and run you ll be glad you took the me to prepare copies of the following driver s license birth cer ficate marriage cer ficate social security card bank and credit card account numbers insurance policies emergency contact list with phone numbers map of the area and phone numbers of places you could go passport wills deeds immuniza on records inventory of household goods stocks and bonds keep your survival back packs or tubs in a designated place in your home so everyone will know where to find it in case of emergency we recommend that you check the expira on date on all items every six months con nued on pg 10 rotate the foodstuffs and water.
