melaniej.thompson@yahoo.ca memories of a kinder gentler time hen i was but a lad growing up in hamilton i used to hang around with my contemporaries at the shorty green which was located a few blocks from where i lived shorty green was the popular name which we called the small water fountains that were a fixture on many street corners in my native city and they were a welcome sight indeed on a warm summer day the fountains were low enough that kids could reach them easily and they were connected to the underground domestic water supply by pipes protected by a sturdy metal column painted green hence the name shorty green in addition for some reason young girls were not attracted to the site and this was an important consideration for seven-year-old boys which was the average age of my contemporaries at the time when i look back i realize those fountains were symbols of much gentler times but such times have not disappeared entirely and for proof i take you now to the intersection of wineva avenue and queen street three times a day all through the school year that area is ruled by a school crossing guard named nellie w gilbert and she sees to it that her youthful clientele gets to where they have to go in orderly fashion with help of course from a number of parents and guardians all of whom have slightly concerned looks on their faces that do not disappear until school lets out at the end of june nellie s guardianship does not go unnoticed and every year a small army of youngsters such as victoria and rachel show their appreciation with a small gift and a great big hug i turn my attention now to a change in picnic patterns that i view with growing concern there was a time not too long ago when preparations for a family picnic were as simple as can be mom made about 75 peanut butter sandwiches aunts and uncles showed up with home-baked cookies and cake and off we went to the nearest park which had hot water available for grandma s tea it s a whole new ball game these days the serviceable sandwich made with unassuming white bread has disappeared to be supplanted by elaborate repasts of breaded pheasants and chicken à king all of it prepared on broilers twice the size of the little engine that could several hours later at the end of the picnic the air-conditioned tent is taken down the surplus pate de foie gras is distributed all around and a draw is held for the left over champagne then everybody agrees that it is good for the soul to get back to the simpler things in life meanwhile a bemused onlooker takes another bite out of his peanut butter sandwich and reflects on the changing times i chanced upon my old pal bootsie faraday recently and am pleased to report that he is in good health and doing well in the world of finance as you may remember he encountered a series of setbacks recently but has bounced back as he always does i do not know the details of his latest endeavor but as near as i can figure out he appears to have established a system where he obtains the teeth from department store dummies and sells them to retired hockey players bootsie grew a trifle furtive when i asked him how he acquired his ersatz choppers so i let the matter drop because it has been my experience that when he gets testy he begins flailing about in a most destructive way so that s always a good time to move on to other matters people who lived around greenwood racetrack complained about traffic cont d from page 3 questions were asked about the death in the ontario legislature and a coroner s inquest lasted more than five weeks one of the longest on record and heard contradictory evidence from 36 witnesses the jury found a number of factors contributed to lillian hess s death and listed nine pages of recommendations to make sure no other senior citizens die under the deplorable conditions she did for the newspaper it was one of the most controversial issues in its history with the councillor his supporters officials who dropped the ball and appalled citizens weighing in metro toronto and the beach got its first parking officer pamela gregorack earlier in the year officials looked into the credible job women were doing as police officers and figured it was time to integrate them into the parking control operations a few years earlier the musical once a beacher always a beacher a cabaret of life in the beach past and present opened at kew beach united church now there was a seven-day reprise of the earlier robert occhipinti production called one more time at the balmy beach club the adam beck community centre opened on may 24 offering much-needed recreation facilities north of kingston road the director of community centre 55 was fired by the board following a public outcry and petition from indignant residents who felt she had been unjustly treated the director was reinstated with full pay her assistant who had resigned in sympathy was also persuaded to come back three hundred people showed up at a meeting in kew beach school to discuss increased rowdiness drinking and public mischief at the beach it was reported that one woman had found a nude man by her clothes dryer she fainted and by the time the police were summoned the man and his laundry had vanished a woman was ejected from karas restaurant on queen street for nursing her baby in public a new building wave hit the beach old apartment buildings were being revamped and reborn as luxury apartments in the process reasonably-priced accommodation was lost the city was concerned by a renovation epidemic across the city and in the beach on sept 29 1980 a bylaw was passed preventing apartments with more than 12 units from being renovated as luxury suites or demolished so that new accommodation could be constructed while thousands of racing fans were overjoyed that thoroughbreds were now running two nights a week at the greenwood racetrack nearby residents complained that the horrendous parking situation was getting worse they block driveways park at corners and in front of hydrants and don t care if they get a ticket they get out of their cars and run to the track said pat erlendsen many hoped the racetrack would move that is an impossible dream said alderman patrick sheppard little did he know!

devour them immediately bottoms up enjoying wines al fresco ah summer living shifts to outdoors and the patio deck and pool beckon the bbq is all fired up the steaks and salmon are grillin and almost all is right with the world the only thing missing is a glass of vino not just any wine will do you ll want cool snappy whites and robust fruity hearty reds there s nothing quite like sipping a glass of your favourite wine al fresco whether it s in your own backyard at the cottage camping or at a restaurant s outdoor patio choosing the right wine is a cinch during the dog days of summer forget those old bottles delicate wines expensive offerings and overly complex numbers you ve been hanging on to their aromatics and flavours will only be lost to the smell of smoke charcoal lawn mower fumes car exhaust grass and other extraneous outdoor stimuli there s simply too much competition infringing on their showing well so save them for indoors what you want are forward `in-yourface robust styles that will stand up to the environment you can even lighten up on many of the rules of matching wine to food this is the season to hang back and enjoy keeping it simple is key choose wines that are young fruity crisp lots of acidity or the sour component and robust avoid excessively oaky selections as well these are usually heavier and tend to mask the fresh fruity character you ll want lots of at this time of year summer whites for whites check out the following grape varieties pinot blanc with its green apple minerality from places edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer educator judge consultant 416-261-0855 winedoctor@sympatico.ca www.winedoctor.ca like alsace france is a good bet pinot grigio because of its nutty flinty character especially from northern italy will do an admirable job riesling with its citrus peachy pine nuance is one of my all time favourites to beat the heat dry to medium-dry styles from most cool climate wine-producing countries are winners why not give wispy clean steely minerally green apply muscadet from the loire valley in france a go or choose herbaceous gooseberry-laden tangy crisp sauvignon blanc for a refreshing alternative even unoaked chardonnay will work nicely patio reds red wine lovers need to focus on these grape varieties gamay full of cherries violets and red berries especially from ontario and beaujolais france are ideal for the warm weather sexy merlot delivers with its red currant floral red licorice notes i love sangiovese from central italy in the warmer weather chalked full of cherry leather and cedar it s yummy with bbq fare the tarry red fruit and spice of hot little malbec from argentina makes it a gem for outdoor dining also perfect for bbq fare is california zinfandel with its brambly dark spicy fruit and smoky black-fruited shiraz for a real interesting change of pace select rosé not only does it look aesthetic in glasses on the table but it s also rarely oak treated and most are specifically produced to be consumed fresh and young although many folks like bubbly at this time of year i usually suggest steering away from it as you probably are aware sparkles generally tends to go to your head faster and i find the heat at this time of year speeds that up cool down be sure to serve all wine a bit cooler than normal including reds nobody enjoys a warm soupy red wine keep an ice bucket and towel next to the picnic table to chill down all wines don t use your best stemware either try sturdier versions to avoid breakage and whatever you do avoid plastic wine should always be sipped out of glass finally make sure you always have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on hand especially for designated drivers the warm weather is ripe for easy livin so make the most of your outdoor soirées this season by following the good doctor s simple suggestions remember that bright forward quaffable styles of wine are what you need just keep it simple and most important drink ·13 august 2011 food 7/21/11 1:32 pm page 1 august 2011 beach metro news 13 write on health natural sun skin protection skin cancer is a growing epidemic as we are into the summer season many people are wondering how they can protect themselves from the sun naturally this is in light of the fact that the incidence of skin cancer is increasing every year as well as the growing concern of the safety of sunscreens used to protect against sunburn canadian cancer statistics estimate that there will be 74,100 new diagnoses of nonmelanoma skin cancers basal and squamous cell and 5,500 new cases of melanoma in 2011 ideally you do want to limit your exposure to the sun but getting some sunlight is pertinent for good health sunshine provides the main source of vitamin d in the body vitamin d is essential for healthy bones and teeth proper immune system functioning and cancer prevention and is involved in the action of many genes in the body unfortunately these days many people are deficient in this crucial vitamin likely due to decreased exposure to the sun and overuse of sunscreens natural protection from the sun you want to start out by gradually getting about 10 minutes of sunlight a day the safe amount of sun exposure differs with each person and how easily they burn stay out of the sun during the peak times from 10 a.m to 4 p.m if you are out during this time try to stay in the shade or wear lightcoloured long-sleeved shirts and pants and a wide brim hat and sunglasses although there is no ideal sunscreen if you use sunscreen the ones that have been found to be the safest so far are the mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which provide uva protection but are also stable in sunlight and do not seem to be absorbed through the skin on the other hand chemical sunscreens contain potentially harmful ingredients which can be absorbed through the skin these ingredients include oxybenzone which can cause allergic reactions and disrupt hormones and are not recommended for use on children and vitamin a retinyl palmitate retinol which has been shown to increase the development of skin tumours when applied on the skin and exposed to sunlight other natural ingredients which have been shown to have some sun-protection factors include green tea extract contains antioxidant polyphenols that can inhibit ultraviolet uv radiationinduced skin tumours ensuring optimal nutrition in your diet can also help to prevent sunburn and skin cancer in general try to eat a good variety of colourful fruits and vegetables in your diet as this will ensure higher intake of antioxidants which help to prevent premature aging and disease caused by harmful uv radiation specifically research has shown that tomatoes cooked in olive oil can have sunprotection and anti-cancer properties this is thought to be due to the high level of lycopenes and carotenoids in tomatoes carotenoids are also found in orangecoloured fruits and vegetables such as carrots sweet potatoes pumpkins mangoes and apricots broccoli has also been proven to have anti-cancer effects and can protect against the damaging effect of uv light studies have also shown that drinking green tea two or more cups per day can decrease the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma as can eating green leafy vegetables such as spinach kale and chard also ensure you are getting enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet through coldwater fish grassfed beef nuts or fish oil as these can help to reduce inflammation in the body and decrease the risk of developing the deadliest form of skin cancer melanoma it has also been shown that vitamins c d and e can also help protect the skin from uv radiation as well as decrease the risk for skin cancer therefore include foods rich in these vitamins in your diet or take supplements of these vitamins in summary use common sense when protecting yourself against the sun but also know that we do need sunlight for optimal health use a good quality natural sunscreen when necessary and further protect yourself by ensuring adequate nutrition in your diet as outlined above with these thoughts in mind have a safe and wonderful summer note ·15 august 2011 child 7/21/11 1:21 pm page 1 august 2011 beach metro news 15 money life and law summer market remains strong in beach by the time you read this article summer is into its final month and hasn t it been a fantastic summer weather wise so far wow two great summers in a row unbelievably july and the beach jazz festival are already behind us and the back to school sales pitches are very close at hand you may want to ponder another few weeks vacation just to capture as much of the remaining summer as possible being in my business as soon as august rolls around i start thinking ahead to the fall beach real estate market now if you ve been keeping track of the numerous reports on the toronto real estate market you may be somewhat befuddled as to where the market is heading one day you see a doom and gloom prediction and the next day numbers reveal a different story with reports of new highs soaring prices and high buyer demand recent stories of huge increases in the sales of million dollar homes across the city seemingly back differing points of view the market is either quite healthy and stable with this news or it s just one more indication that the market is becoming much too overheated with an overdue and impending correction just around the corner the beach real estate market has been often cited as an example of each standpoint so let s take a look at how the beach real estate market did over the first half of the year and what we might expect this coming fall as i ve stated in previous articles beach real estate often dances to a different drummer from the rest of the toronto market over the last two decades as the beach has become one of this city s most desirable neighbourhoods our local market is somewhat insulated from downturns in the overall toronto market over the last decade gains in the beach real estate market have greatly surpassed much of the upswing in the overall toronto market largely due to the sustained smaller inventory of homes available for sale at any one time in the beach thomas neal real estate beach wise is a well-known and respected local beach agent and with the seemingly unending amount of willing beach buyers the yearly average price of a residential dwelling in the beach e02 as of june 30 of this year hit $637,161 whereas the yearly average price for the first six months of 2011 within the toronto real estate board s boundaries was much lower at $467,169 beach realtors were finding it hard to keep the shelves stocked in most price ranges but especially in the under $800,000 price range with multiple offers on many properties the traditionally strong spring market was again evident this year with april s average sale price spiking at just under $645,000 and may s average price of a beach property slightly lower hitting $624,583 on 104 sales overall our strong flourishing real estate market saw the average price of a detached beach home for the month of june hit $918,000 on 42 sales and semi-detached homes averaged a sale price for the month at just under $557,000 on 46 sales heading into the july and august months there s less inventory obviously and the activity has dropped off somewhat as is the case in any event at this time of year the audience for listings trails off but there s always new buyers starting to shop in the beach at any given time of year with the summer months no exception so if your home is on the market in august it may not be exactly brisk with showings but those showings should be interested parties to be sure besides the fall market kicks off the last two weeks of august anyway so you ve got the head start the upcoming fall market i think ,will start to clearly give some better indication of where the market thinks it may want to head the rest of the year in my opinion the beach fall market is always a little difficult to peg as it hasn t quite gathered the steam that you d expect these last few years proper pricing and strategy is paramount in the fall market because unlike the spring market the beach fall real estate market is shorter and less defined in terms timing and certainly more sporadic it s a strong weekly market rather than the monthly market we see in the spring with listings bunching up on the market for a few weeks then some weeks just a trickle of new listings buyers tend to be more focused in the fall as well not willing to jump at a property that doesn t quite push all their buttons if it gets into november they ll start to think about waiting for the perceived rush of new listings in the late winter market of february and march good timing and pricing and right strategy will bring your home its justified price in the fall with interest rates being kept to a minimum for the near future and the canadian and local toronto economy staying strong this fall should see a continuation of the robust beach market sizable upper end homes will pick up the pace as a new wave of move-up buyers set their sights on larger digs and those buyers will find ample takers for their mid-range homes and naturally there will be the first time buyers who still want to get a toe-hold in this neighbourhood and why not can you think of a better place in toronto to live or come back to after your summer holidays than the beach remember it s always about location location location and aren t we in a great location here take care and enjoy the rest of the summer and if you have any questions about this article or beach real estate in general feel free to give me a call at 416-6905100 or
