blending newsletter 3 7 studentservicesjuly 2 0 1 1 3s umm er is sue photos by simone bodmer-turner breaking news this that-region opening at f_air by simone bodmer-turner on july 19th at 7 pm f_air s artist in residence christiana caro opened her first solo show in florence titled vernissage this-that region before her exhibition opened we talked with christiana to learn more about her show and her experience at f_air blending what is your personal perspective on the final selections of your show christiana the final selections for my show at the f_air gallery are a combination of works i made in tucson and florence for me there is something important about the transfer of imagery from where i was to where i am a lot of what i am interested in with this work is the simultaneity of perspective both physical and emotional left/right future/past and present another important element of my research here was interacting with andrea matteini a florentine who is blind this was a positive way for me to invest in this place very directly to understand a new version of florence the one not seen blending what has the environment of f_air been like while you were preparing your show christiana living in the same space as the f_air gallery was fantastic it helped me envision my show each day when i left the building also being in close contact with the curator lucia giardino allowed for an easy exchange of feedback as my project developed which was invaluble for the 2 weeks leading up to the exhibition i basically moved into the print lab at diva i cannot overstate how helpful everyone there was with a special shout to eleonora accorsi it was fun to spend time in the lab with the students and instructors i felt a part of the fua energy and it has been great christiana s exhibit will open in f_air s gallery on via san gallo 45/r tuesday july 19th from 7-10pm the gallery is open 3.00 ­ 8.00 pm monday through thursday the show will run until mid-september

newsletter37 student services jul y2011 2 past and upcoming events florence celebrates the 4th of july by simone bodmer-turner on july 2nd and 3rd florence hosted a wild west inspired independence day celebration with live music barbeque games vendors and fireworks our palazzi staff attended to promote its publishing house ingorda and its schools fua diva fast apicus f_air and ideas parco d arte was full of italian families american students and organizations promoting their cause all joined together to celebrate american independence day photos by alessandro schneider elton john in lucca by allyson will when a friend first asked me if i would want to attend the elton john concert in lucca i thought it was a mistake i was waiting for her to realize that the concert had passed it was going to be 200 euro or that it was actually a cover band after doing a little research online all of my theories had been proven wrong elton john really was coming to lucca summer festival in eight days and the best part was that the tickets were only 49 euro i couldn t believe my eyes we bought our tickets immediately and patiently waited for the night of thursday july 14th hillary and i got to lucca around 6 pm on the night of the concert i had never been to lucca before and wanted to spend time around the town before elton hit the stage at 9:30 the town was beautiful but quiet it made me nervous that the concert had been cancelled but as we turned the first corner we were confronted with a giant poster that had been printed with elton john s face it all started to feel real after doing some walking grabbing a few postcards and sharing a pizza the audience was finally allowed to enter the venue the concert was located in the piazza napoleone which was divided into half seats and half standing room for the concert hillary and i rushed into the standing room as soon as the gates opened and were able to grab two front row spots in the standing room section there were two hours until elton john came on stage and the time couldn t have gone by faster at 9:30 the sun was setting and the lights on the stage were becoming easier to see with no warning the lights were turned on high five men walked out and the music started blasting the only instrument that wasn t being utilized was a big black piano in the middle of the stage we knew that was where elton john would be but the bench was empty and the crowed continued to cheer about a minute into the song a man with a long black jacket black pants and tinted pink sunglasses walked onto stage that was the moment when i realized i was finally in the presence of one of the most famous men on earth that was elton john without saying a word he worked the sound of the piano into the song and began to sing he sounded exactly how i imagined and with that said was almost better than i had hoped i was constantly being surprised by how many songs i knew by heart and how many songs i didn t even know were by elton john in a matter of hour i was able to hear songs like rocket man benny and the jets and tiny dancer by 11:30 we could tell that the concert was coming to an end soon people in the crowd were slowly leaving and before we knew it there was no one left on stage i couldn t believe that i had just listened to elton john play for over two hours and he never played my favorite song your song i was disappointed but before i could get the words out to ask hillary to leave the stage lit up and your song was coming out of the speakers hearing my favorite song coming straight from elton john s mouth was the perfect end to our night in lucca the entire train ride back to florence i was still in awe of the fact that i was able to have an opportunity to see such a legend in person and not to mentionwhile i was in italy i knew right away that this would be a night i would never forget the bargello hosts florence s 22nd annual dance festival by simone bodmer-turner since june 23rd international dance companies have been performing pieces ranging from traditional to modern within the wonderful and historic setting of the bargello museum on july 13th fua faculty member francesca gea and her dance company maktubnoir performed their piece green day which was inspired by the texts of allen ginzberg and the bit culture and choreographed by peter pireddu the 11 different performances which have served to reflect the current face of international dance and ballet concluded on july 19th.

3 studentservices jul 2011 newsletter 37 y special travel food italian and french riviera this summer a group of publishing students explored and researched the northern tuscan and southern french coasts for a travel guide book that will be published by ingorda the university press of palazzi and fua exploring old nice by emily kundert old nice is a place filled with wonder and history as you step onto the cours saleya and its surrounding streets you feel as if you have been transported back in time two centuries residential areas flow into commercial areas without boundaries the two often mixing together like milk and cookies the narrow shadowy streets photo by jen adams are lined with tall buildings that rarely let in the sunlight creating a cool atmosphere full of mystery everywhere you turn there are staircases winding through the red orange and yellow buildings that lead to the indefinite ­ an infinite maze of homes shops and restaurants as well as doors leading to mysterious places only the mind can imagine as you wander deep into the heart of old nice it will become common to see locals visiting in the street shopkeepers greeting customers and damp laundry hanging on the fastened lines outside high windows the laundry is something you will notice first with your nose the clean delicious smell of home wafting endlessly throughout the walls of the labyrinth every so often the streets will lead you into a large piazza showcasing one of old nice s many intricate churches most of which are open for both tourists and locals during the daytime i would highly recommend visiting one if not more of these beautifully designed sanctuaries just remember to be respectful of the place and those who may be there to worship wear church appropriate clothing and keep your voice to a minimum old nice truly is a must see while traveling the french riviera though the area is touristy and most everyone speaks english it gives you a true sense of how the french had lived quiet simple lives before the industrial revolution the area is overflowing with a history just waiting to be discovered the emotions of place du massena by jessica skupien 7 am in place du massena nice peaceful calm serene under the morning light at this time of day the town is just starting to bloom the square with its checkered pavement is sprinkled with working people headed for the tram as the light begins to rise over the building and awake all the sleeping people of nice a man and his dog wander to the middle of the square dwarfed by the art sculptures near by they soak up the last bit of peace before the town becomes alive as the square begins to fill with business owners heading for their shops and runners out for their morning jog the man and his dog disappear into the day 10 pm loud active alive at this time of night the square becomes full with people flowing away from restaurants looking for a night out from the winding side streets people flood every inch of the square like enthusiastic fans after a sports event where their team just won there are tourists taking pictures of the illuminated statues and locals out after a long day at work in the center of the square people form a circle around dancing photo by jan adams street performers screaming and clapping as they catapult and flip into the air as the night continues people begin to disperse so that in a few hours the morning individuals the man and his dog can return to their serenity it does not matter what time of day it is or what your reason is for being there whether you re looking to blend in or to stand out place du massena with its never-ending checkered ground and towering buildings makes it the place to go the square is stunning picturesque it is the heartbeat of nice in the morning you may feel a smooth steady beat and as the day goes on and welcomes the evening the heartbeat quickens and becomes rapid the square may simply be composed of buildings and statues and street but it is filled with the emotions of a city and the people who populate it

newsletter37 student services jul y2011 4 socca a very special chickpea flatbread from southern france by emily kundert kayla mccaig jen adams emily kundert and melissa lee we encountered this southern french chickpea staple in towns such as saint paul de vence nice and antibes in tuscany and liguria it is called cecina or farinata be sure to seek out a slice before your study abroad experience in florence ends chickpea flatbread ­ once known as a poor man s food has now become a delicacy in the italian and french riviera the italians call it cecina or farinata in southern france it s known as socca the thin and soft pancake like dish made of chickpea flour water olive oil and a lot of black pepper has quickly become a staple along the cote d azur served steaming hot from the portable wood oven and sprinkled with black pepper as is traditionally eaten allowed us to stroll through the markets and small towns while savoring this native food photo by jen adams wine news the cultural importance of wine and food made evident through cinema by jennifer caloia both wine and food go hand-in-hand as symbols of love in italian culture what better way to celebrate a marriage or an anniversary than with an excellent wine that compliments the meal likewise a glass of wine can be a nice way to relax after a stressful day at work or to have when spending time with friends food is also used as a means of comfort such as eating risotto when it s cold or pappa al pomodoro when you are sick wine is an integral part of the italian culture and this can be seen from many different facets including religion music and films there are many films that feature wine and the relationship that people have with it for example the 1995 film french kiss shows how wine is woven into the lives of the characters in one scene kevin kline s character gives meg ryan s character a glass of wine to taste she tastes it and at first describes herself instead of the wine but after smelling different herbs and spices ryan s character tastes the wine again picking up currant and lavender in the taste the scene shows how important it is to dissect and analyze each flavor that is in the wine because each wine has different flavors and that adds to their uniqueness also this scene reminds the viewers that in order to accurately describe the wine one must take look past describing their individual personality and instead focus on the wine and its taste and appearance to give it a personality another example of a movie that shows appreciation for food is ratatouille in one of the scenes a food critic has come to taste a dish at the restaurant and he is served ratatouille at first he scoffs at the simplicity of the dish but upon tasting the dish the flavors bring him back to his childhood and his mothers ratatouille this scene shows how food and wine can serve as reminders of the past and can bring up strong feelings and sentiments of the past experiences and the emotions attached to them another movie that comes to mind when i think of how food affects our mood and emotions is the movie chocolat in the movie a woman moves to a french village and opens a store selling gourmet chocolates during lent a scandal to the very conservative church in town despite firm dissuasion from the church the chocolate shop and its courageous kind owner affect the townspeople in a positive way one couple s love for each other is rekindled an older man finally works up the courage to court his long time love and it comforts and inspires a woman who is stuck in an abusive marriage to leave her husband and reinvent her life the movie shows how food is not just eaten to keep us alive with its nutrients but also to keep our souls alive wine and food bring people together and are two universally recognized symbols that can be understood by everyone by simply ingesting them when i think of food and wine i think of my family and how we use them as an extension of how much we love and care for one another when one member of the family is sad we offer them food when we are celebrating we have wine when we have family get-togethers both are present i believe that food and wine represent us as people because like us each dish and each wine has its own personality and unique ingredients that makes it what it is.

5 the italian aperitivo by rachel orlowski italy is famous for its food and wine but there is a part of italian culture that doesn t make it into the cookie cutter italian stereotype the aperitivo starting at around 6pm the aperitivo is typically a predinner drink accompanied with a wide assortment of foods in tiny bite-size portions however this tradition is so much more than food and wine it s a time for friends to catch up or to make a new friend while enjoying a glass of wine italian through and through the aperitivo is like a kitchen table bringing people together my first experience of this ritual started at ganzo at the wine corner i ended up with sangria with peaches and cherries which was the light fruity drink i was hoping for i had meant to order wine but the sangria looked so good the food was divine there were different kinds of tiny sandwiches filled with ham and soft cheese there was bruschetta and a pastry-like swirl of prosciutto cheese and bread next to that were bowls of different mixes of veggies and dressings corn cucumber carrots and olives were found in dishes served various ways because this particular aperitivo was at ganzo most of the attendees were students but i still i feel like i really got the full experience even if i didn t mix with studentservices jul 2011 newsletter 37 y photo by simone bodmer-turner locals as much as i would ve liked i chatted with other girls made friends and learned things about them that i may have never discovered on my own i saw the same happening with others around me a group of roommates bonding a group of old friends talking about their day and people standing outside chitchating over a cigarette though there couldn t have been more than twenty people in the room the place was alive with laughter and friendship it is heartwarming to see how food and wine can create a social relationship the italian aperitivo is a perfect example it encompasses those things that italy seems to really cherish food wine friends and family it is important to appreciate this as an outsider and then join in to experience the culture i hope to enjoy many more aperitivi while i am here while i love the way ganzo rocks it i think i will also try to find a local hangout as well perhaps i can make a florentine friend and we can get to know each other over a glass of wine and some crostini how very italian that would be a sensory analysis of the italian aperitivo by spenser crawford to go along with the lively social atmosphere that aperitivo provides the food and drinks provide an array of complimentary sensations the night i attended aperitivo at ganzo the foods that were offered were antipasto of crostini of chicken liver with dried figs and san donato sauce primo of carrot and amaretto ravioli with sage and butter sauce secondo of which is slow cooked arista with baked apples and prunes with le masetrelle sauce and the dolce which was a soft pecorino and cantuccini cheese cake with caramelized pear and honey there was also some other vegetables and bread these foods in particular compliment the drinks because they dry your mouth to a certain extent also the foods have a more earthy taste to them because of the vegetables the drinks that were offered are sweeter so that they will contrast the dryness and earthiness of the food there were a number of drinks being offered at the aperitivo but the wine of the night and the one that i drank was a white wine called santa cristina umbria this wine is an igt from the northern parts of italy it is a straw-yellow color but this particular one was slightly more gold than yellow because it was a 2010 vintage bottle and has aged slightly for my olfactory analysis it was scarcely intense scarcely to lacking complexity fine and had a floral/fruity scent to it more fruity if anything the gustative qualities of this wine really matters in terms of the aperitivo santa cristiana umbria is a very sweet wine this is because of the higher sugar content in it and the lower amount of alcohol it provided me with strong sensations on the tip of my tongue where sweet taste buds are located and slight tingling along the sides because of the alcohol the sweet flavors and aromas of the santa cristina contrast against the dryness of the bread and other vegetables it stimulates the saliva glands and refreshes your mouth the contrast of the food and the wine paired together at ganzo s aperitivo made me not only appreciate the whole tradition of aperitivo to meet socialize and enjoy others company but also the thought and hard work that goes into providing a meal that is so incredibly complimentary and satisfying bravo ganzo photo by lauren reed

newsletter37 student services jul y2011 6 faces places the faces of florentine botteghe by simone bodmer-turner to commence summer 2012 palazzi has founded florence open city a program revolutionizing the academic journey of cultural integration within the city and the local economy though a unique academic program of study in which florentine botteghe and laboratories will open their doors to study abroad students to share their arts and experiences and teach them their techniques the goal of the program is to discover the true soul of florence by scraping away the surface of fake traditional trattorie pubs the speculation of tourism and cultural colonialism by immersing students in authentic florentine craftsmanship the hosting botteghe and laboratories will represent all arts involving work by hand food and wine producers woodworkers marble artists art restoration specialists gilders papermakers binders goldsmiths painters sculptors fashion designers textile producers shoemakers accessory makers photographers video makers studios for design architecture and visual communication one student-turned-intern s photography of local craftsmen and women around florence give a glimpse of who you may encounter next summer in florence open city s program and what it is possible to learn for more information about enrollment in the florence open city program email info@fua.it photos by simone bodmer-turner sketches of florentines by annika volkmann as a visitor of florence it strikes me how much the city incorporates art into its own culture i find myself identifying with this practice using art as a form of appreciation of life whenever i am sitting alone at a cafe waiting for a bus at the station or even sitting in a classroom i take the opportunity to study the sea of faces around me sometimes i ll choose one lucky individual with a crooked smile or a hooked nose something that makes them stand out i try imagining their life s story assigning them a personality type a career or a family in this way the sea of faces becomes a more familiar body of people and the characteristics we all share a nose a mouth two eyes cheekbones a chin make us that much more a part of each others worlds i find this attitude in florence as well no matter who you are or where you are from we are all works of art to be appreciated.

newsletter37 student services jul y2011 8 italian arts and culture 130 years later pinocchio still lives happy birthday by beverley comstock born july 7 1881 pinocchio still lives today in pinocchio park and in the heart and mind of young and old who doesn t remember several versions of the story about a puppet who nose grew every time he told a lie the first time his nose grew into a tree branch with a bird s nest at the end another time he told a lie his nose grew so long he could not leave his room until the truth shrunk it back to normal the fable was written by tuscan writer carlo lorenzini under the pen name of c collodi and is a classic of children s literature and italy s second most read book after manzoni s the betrothed this story and all of its characters are brought to life in pinocchio park located in collodi the medieval hillside village and the birthplace of the famous puppet collodi located in at the tuscany region of italy is midway between montecatini terme spa and lucca near florence the park s statutes portrays the story of pinocchio life from the time his father geppetto created him out of a piece of wood until the blue ferry turns him into a real boy when he proves to be brave truthful and unselfish statutes and mosaics interact with the natural woodland setting allowing visitors to relax reminisce and relive history the park also contains a museum built between 1956 and 1987 with pinocchio related items the laboratory of words and figures features pictures and drawings painted for pinocchio by students visiting this park give children and adults time to relive those childhood fables and recall the disney pinocchio movies collodi s other attractions are the 17th century villa garzoni and the butterfly house which is located within the park if time permits take the family to the adjoining toyland built in 1972 where the children will enjoy the amusement rides and colorful disney characters the nearby city of lucca is famous for providing visitors an opportunity to walk the walls around the city when visiting these attraction take time to feel a melting gelato drip down your elbow sing happy birthday to the famous puppet and become immersed in the culture and history of florence as a visitor from america and a study abroad student it is important to research and visit as many places in and around italy because kissing the pig the superstition that kissing the bronze statue of the boar in mercato nuovo will bring you luck does not guarantee that we will return to beautiful florence alla prossima one student participates in a local artist competition in montefioralle by olimpia bozzo fua s olimpia bozzo speaks with student kim hoerster 53 from georgetown texas about her experience at fua and the competition in montefioralle for wine-label artwork q kim can you tell us a little bit about yourself a i finished my career as a gymnastics coach after 30 years i still own a gymnastics school in texas i had started coaching at age 19 to pay the college tuition i went to college as an art major because i took art lessons as a child my first semester in beginning drawing the professor gave me c so i switched my major to dance after five and a half years of college i quit close to to my graduation because pursue coaching gymnastics school grew to have 2 additional locations huntsville livingston and

9 y studentservices jul 2011 newsletter 37 crockett tx when i married my husband eventually gave up his job to partner and grow the business together we opened gymnastics schools in the austin area georgetown round rock cedar park and burnet each complete with a building full of equipment a manager and employees at one point we operated 6 schools after i retired we closed or sold some of the schools and now my husband operates 3 schools and i am retired our sons were in college so i went back to college for art now i have a website kimhoerster.com where i sell my paintings and teach art q so coming to study art history in italy is your second chance to go back to your passion for art a yes after i retired and my 2 sons now 21 and 24 moved out for college i then went back to pursue my first love art on a day trip to siena i learned about this art competition in montefioralle i got very excited to be able to participate q why did you choose palazzi a by taking art history ii at palazzi i get to see the art in real life not just in a text book and to be able to take a 3 and a half month course in just 4 weeks my college chose palazzi for me but i have been very pleased all staff members have been extremely friendly to me and encouraging anytime i needed help it was nice that our professor had the fua employees go on many of our outings q tell us about your day in montefioralle how was the contest how where the people you met how was the experience in general a there were 22 artists we got our canvas stamped and dated to start out showing we had a blank surface everyone spread out and got busy it was in the hillside of their beautiful vineyard i set up my easel in the cellar painting a still life of the history of their oldest wine bottle production throughout the day they provided all the food and wine we wanted when the time was up they displayed all the works by hanging them along the vineyard patio area they had desserts for us as we waited i was glad that i picked the cellar because the artist that had been painting outside were sunburned red as a tomato during the awards we were each given a certificate and two bottles of their wine the top 3 winners were awarded and given cases of wine and the first place winner received the honor of having their work made into the label on the vinyards wine it was exciting and all the artist were fun to hang out with i was very proud of jill my new friend who got second place if it wasn t for olimpia i would have never known about the art competition the fua staff takes interest in the students and make the school personable q why did you enjoy the experience a i enjoyed the experience because i got away from the busy city took a break from students and met local italian residents i met a couple who are italian librarians they treated me to lunch gave me a tour of the area in their car and they let me stay in their home it was like a dream come true a miracle that god sent me q i think you were very lucky to experience something so authentically italian to an extent not many study abroad students can get did the experience change your perspective on italy and italians a yes as a matter of fact i am planning on coming back nect year to montefioralle where i can teach art and hold an art show at the end of the experience through this experience i learned that italians are very warm and friendly just like the professors at palazzi every employee has been nice to me at school from the people at the front desk to olympia to kandace that always takes the time to say hi when i pass her out on the street to see photos of the competition go to http www.aziendamontefioralle.com/eventi/concorso-pittura.php http www.facebook.com/search.php?q=sarah%20cullen%20&init=quick&tas=0.2602258415344013&ref=ts montefioralle

newsletter37 student services jul y2011 10 a modern break from renaissance art by simone bodmer-turner as we all know florence is the hub of renaissance art michelangelo leonardo da vinci botticelli brunelleschi and hundreds more can be found in florence s museums and displayed all over the buildings piazzas and churches while i can respect renaissance art and find a lot of it incredibly beautiful and powerful i can only see so many annunciations and crucifixions before i need a breath of fresh air luckily for me the strozzi museum displayed an exhibit chronicling the development of three artists who are as far from renaissance art as you can get picasso dali and miró the exhibition angry young men the birth of modernity takes the viewer backwards in time beginning with each artists later works and descends back in time to when each artist was a young boy through the deconstructed development of each artist you can see how their influences changed their relationships with their parents affected their work and their different capabilities as artists something i found surprising compared to the stereotype we have as a culture of each artists work the exhibit is a must-see for anyone interested in modern art or just willing to change their view on an artist they thought they knew salvador dalì pablo picasso joan mirò community voice new pedestrian zones in florence by simone bodmer-turner officials from the palazzo vecchio recently revealed that a long-time complaint would be addressed and the city of florence was about add multiple pedestrian zones to frequented areas around the city center florence s mayor matteo renzi announced that via tornabuoni piazza pitti and via por santa maria would go completely pedestrian in time for the san giovanni festivity on june 24th so that florentines could celebrate their patron saint in a traffic free atmosphere this addition of 3,5 hectares that will be off limits for the vehicles in addition to the duomo area which was already closed off to city traffic in 2009 will complete an area of 6.5 hectares that mayor renzi has made pedestrian in the last 2 years the areas are now blocked not only to cars but also to motorcycles and mo-peds even locals cannot enter the areas except between 6 and 9 am and between 6 and 7:30 pm no taxis will be allowed except between the hours of 9pm to 7am and no buses will be allowed except for the eco-friendly mini buses the new pedestrian-only zones will necessitate many changes to the public transportation network ataf will have to change the route of two electric buses that service the historic centre lines c3 and d the situation becomes more difficult along via tornabuoni where the routes of the highly used bus lines 6 11 36 37 and t1 which connect the oltrarno with the historic centre will have to be modified although alternatives are being looked into reports show that changes to these buses routs will only slow the current schedules by two to three minutes though change is always met with opposition these new pedestrian zones should encourage florentines to participate in the walking culture and appreciate the effort to reduce pollution in the city center.

11 studentservices jul 2011 newsletter 37 y student voice an unexpected place of peace by allyson will i have seen and done a lot in florence since i have been here but my favorite thing i have done so far came up unexpected one day i took a hike up to piazzele michelangelo to be able to see all of florence the view was unbelievable but what really caught my eye was the church behind me the church is san miniato al monte which means st minias on the mountain the church was built for miniato and albanian prince who was in the roman army at first i didn t even know if you were allowed to go inside but i took a chance and walked right in the church was silent except for the low tones of men singing the dark lighting and cold air inside was inviting and allowed me to take a seat on the pews i had been in italy for two weeks now and i had yet to experience such a quiet simple yet magnificent structure the lack of tourists inside the basilica beside myself allowed me to observe for almost an hour i sat there and imagined what it would be like to sit through mass at the time that the church was built between the 11th and 13th centuries i imagined how much time and effort it took to build the church and couldn t fathom the idea that it was all built completely by hand from the art on the walls to the marble floor to the gold trimmings in every corner i had never been a part of something so beautiful i tried to quiet my thoughts and focused in on the monks of the monastery chanting in latin although i couldn t comprehend anything they were singing it still was enjoyable to listen to their words were mellow sounding and each word blended perfectly to the next i couldn t see the men but i could see a group of people sitting in a lowered section of the church listening to manner like i did they had the same uncertain look on their faces as if they too couldn t believe you were allowed inside such an outstanding piece of art when i hiked the piazzele michelangelo i wasn t expecting to find anything but a view of florence what i found is in my opinion the most peaceful place in all of florence student faculty profiles intern profile michelle thompson by simone about and intern in florence at f_air a i was getting ready to graduate and was still uncertain as to what i wanted to do after graduation i knew i wanted to go abroad this summer and have a completely new experience so when i started looking around online i realized interning would allow me to expand my resume and immerse myself in a new culture q why was this particular internship alluring to you when you were figuring out what you wanted to do here a it was the first one offered to me and it was targeted towards a communications and/or art history major i am both so when i read the description i was completely confident that interning at an art gallery in florence italy would be the perfect option q what do you do daily for your internship what are your responsibilities a it varies the art gallery director is my boss so anything she needs done i help her write press releases for upcoming events or what is currently going on at f_air i contact who she needs me to contact help update and maintain the website and help the artists set up their shows basically anything of that nature q what do you enjoy most about your internship a i love everything about it lucia is so amazing and has taught me so much i had never done anything like this before it has given me so much insight to a different aspect of communications i never thought about merging my two majors before now i am more keen about the future q what have you learned from your time interning in florence and what do you hope to accomplish by the end of the summer through your internship a i came to florence to expand my resume and to immerse myself in a different culture i wanted to give myself an experience that would be an adventure but also be productive and useful in continuing my knowledge in my degree i ve learned that you have to do everything you can to make the most out of your time abroad take every opportunity handed to you take complete and total advantage of being in another part of the world by learning everything you can about that culture get as much as you can out of your internship ask questions but i have also learned to be independent while working and doing things i know will benefit the gallery on my own q what do you enjoy most about florence where are your favorite places here and your favorite things to do a there are too many things to name definitely a top favorite would be the piazzale michaelangelo apertivo is one of my favorite thing to do i can t get enough of it it is all you can eat and the foods are so diverse and light there is so much to do and see in florence that i still have yet to do everything all the places i have gone are wonderful and the city blows my mind each and everyday i love everything about it and will be heartbroken to leave!

newsletter37 student services jul y2011 12 crisis were thirty years in the making linking our current troubles with the end of the bretton woods system and the stagnation of wages in the u.s his global terrorism class looks specifically at terrorism in germany italy peru israel/palestine and the connections and patterns between them moscow became interested in investigating international terrorism during his residency at nyu this past year where he studied the pinochet regime in chile this was a period of state sponsored terrorism really horrible stuff was being done by the regime against the people of chile but we tend not to think of the state as a terrorist actor i became interested in the ways the term is used and wanted to teach the topic to understand the root of each countries terrorist history the class studies political ideologies and reads original political and religious texts moscow explains sometimes the rhetoric of the media can be overheated and understanding is hard to come by through reading the primary documents we can hear the voices of the rebels or terrorists directly i think we can better come to understand what motivates these actors and what their goals are moscow stresses that we probably won t like most of the ideas expressed by these insurgent groups but we can t risk not knowing what drives them moscow believes that his global economics class is important because most people are scared of numbers and therefore shy away from economics but a basic understanding of economics is crucial to understanding the world economics is not just in the news it is the news virtually all of the major events in the world are driven to some degree by economic factors moscow adds if we don t have a basic understanding of our economic system then the way governments work and the decisions they make will be harder to comprehend ultimately if we are going to live in a democracy we have some responsibility to understand the world around us it was pointed out that these two courses while very different from each other both cover fairly dark subject matter right now i m not sure which keeps me up at night more often terrorism is of course scary but i d say these days the global economy is darn right terrifying it s going to be bumpy but these are exciting times faculty profile lev moscow by simone bodmer-turner new york born and raised lev moscow came to florence after spending several years teaching international political economy and the history of the middle east in a manhattan public school attending wheaton college for undergraduate school and university of amsterdam for graduate school he studied international relations international political economy and middle east studies while in amsterdam he decided that he wanted to teach and returned to the us to attend graduate school at tufts where he got his masters in education and began teaching in manhattan in 2005 in addition to teaching moscow has been working with students from colombia university and nyu training them to be teachers themselves arriving this summer in florence moscow teaches global economics and global terrorism his global economics class aims to understand the underlying causes of the current recession his students explore how the housing bubble and credit do s and don ts by simone bodmer-turner do buy some of your produce from the fresh markets like san ambrogio and mercato centrale if not for the quality of the fruits and vegetables harvested from italian farms then for the fun and cultural experience do take a small italian dictionary or phrasebook with you if you are having trouble with a menu look up your questions in it first or if you d like to say something in italian teach yourself how to say it making an effort will separate you from the tourists who expect everyone to speak english and consider it an inconvenience when locals don t do enjoy the long slow italian style meal with family or friends pick a time when no one has to be anywhere anytime soon and order one thing at a time try different wines with different courses and really take the time to enjoy your food and your company do explore the oltrarno the oltrarno has far less tourists and none of the giant umbrella-led groups in single file better restaurants cheaper options an amazing assortment of shops with hand-made goods some beautiful churches like santo spirito and san miniato piazzele michelangelo for a beautiful view and the pitti palace and the boboli and bardini gardens are you convinced yet don t travel every weekend i know you re in europe for such a short amount of time and you want to see as much of it as you can but don t forget about exploring the place you live don t eat out for every meal grocery shop in the local markets see do #1 or grocery stores to save some money each week and whip yourself up an easy meal at home or make a night of it with your friends and all cook together have a glass of wine and take part in a cheaper version of do #3 don t eat the gelato that is close to the main sights ponte vecchio duomo etc and is piled high in its containers and covered with old fruit and hardened chocolate drizzles it may be convenient but you have not tasted true gelato until you find a tiny place where italians not tourists buy their gelato try il gelato di filo before the steps to michelangelo gelato dei neri on via dei neri close to fua or la carraia on the other side of the arno right across the ponte la carraia don t spend all your free time on your computer i know you have tv shows to catch up on and you want to skype with your family friends and significant other but hello you re in florence italy you can catch up when you get home get outside now blending masthead
