9 t h e « kommunalka » projectinafewwords 6 « » ­ «» ­ « » ­ ­ ­ ­ producerofproject m ars association projectorganizedtheby regional public foundation for arts projects m ars centre for contemporary arts headofthe natalia kossolapova project authorandcuratoroftheproject antonio geusa seven renowned russian artists will be sharing the same living environment for 6 days the whole length of art moscow during which they will be asked to fulfil a series of challenging tasks that will allow them to unleash their creative instincts and personality for a few days they will be living cut away from the rest of the world in a most congenial space for an artist to be the house of the artist during the first three days in the «kommunalka» the major objective for each artist is the production of an artwork and a portfolio illustrating their artistic credo the evening of the third day of their stay they submit them to the audience and the jury of experts for evaluation two participants are sent home from the following day onwards each evening one artist leaves in the end there will be three finalists the jury of experts and the audience at art moscow will decide the one who is going to win the first prize the exhibition comprises ­ real time footage of what is happening in the kommunalka ­ edited clips of life in the kommunalka ­ the artists video diary that they will be recording during their stay in the kommunalka ­ any artefact made on the site that the artists want to put on public display 24/7 live broadcast and video clips is also maintained on the project internet web site.

13 yurikalendarevbeyondthesound entrainment « » 25 carrara pietrasanta 30 environmental art «the art of tuning of metals» sound plates «hidden voice» «» ­ ­ a sound plates sonic entrainment organizer regional public foundation for art projects keywords natural sound vibrating space signal reverberating signals rhythm entrainment yuri kalendarev sculptor was born in saint petersburg russia he belongs to the generation of underground «non conformist» artists the dissidents of the 70s for the last 25 years he has been living and working in italy carrara and pietrasanta after working with granite environmental art and light projects for about 30 years he now presents the outcome of his research of a last few years from the visual art of conventional sculpture to «the art of tuning of metals» a direct work with vibrations and sounds the sound plates the visuality of the sculpture itself becomes here an irrelevant aspect a confronto with a hidden voice of a sounding sculpture in a way those sound sculptures are «devices» to listen to the silence their essence goes beyond the sound and our interaction with them ­ though still mysterious ­ is such to induce altered states of conscience or to expand our perceptive abilities as in a state of wakefulness the sound plates naturally generate a large range of frequency oscillations that allow multiple interactions with our being through the phenomenon known as sonic entrainment this phenomenon not only acts on those brain areas that elaborate acoustic stimuli but it also synchronizes the electric activity of the whole brain and probably the biorhythms of other organs or functions sonic entrainment lies at the foundation of the benefic advantages of sound therapy where sound vibration stimulates the whole body to harmonically function sound plates by yuri kalendarev are forged out of acoustic bronze compounds by ham mers and fire all pieces are unique made by the artist himself «the bell in forest» 2006 acoustic bronze string 51x51 cm
