the world premiere of `minds in the water was premiered on april 30th in byron bay the film is largely about you and as the flyer says `through dave rastavich s journey a five-year adventure spanning the globe from australia to the galápagos chile california alaska and japan we see one surfer s transformation from observer to activist in his desire to defend the ocean and its inhabitants it sounds really different would you say minds in the water is a `surf film dr minds in the water is a surf film it has footage from surf spots around the world there is footage of the bells contest the snapper contest and free surfing imagery as well but where it differs is that it has a story that arcs over a five year period in which the surfers become involved in ocean issues that relate to all animals in the water you travelled the world with the film maker justin krumb can you tell us an experience or two that you had which had an affect on you and your activism dr meeting paul watson in 2005 got em fired up to get active in ocean issues that enthusiasm then passed onto those around me and justin krumb and steve barilotti decided it would be great to document the process of going from a passive observer to an engaged activist also it was just absurd that at that point in time not one other surfer i spoke to knew anything about whaling dolphin kills or the work that sea shepherd was doing then we started off wanting to inform our surfing community and hoped that we would then move together to stop the crimes against nature that whalers commercial fishermen and dolphin killers are committing surfers for cetaceans is something you started several years ago how many of the international whaling commission meetings have you and members of sfc been involved with and do you think the japanese will stop whaling dr we have attended each iwc meeting since 2004 they infuriate me but are good at getting us motivated to act on the issue of cetacean kills japan abandoned their whale hunt early this season in antarctica due to sea shepherd intervention the japanese economy is not so good and then the terrible devastation from the earthquake and tsunami there have left japan in a position where i personally think if they were to spend millions of their tax payers dollars 4 gcsurf winter 2011 on something as unnecessary as whaling they would be committing a crime against their own people we are at a point that is unfamiliar who knows what the japanese government will do next you had a heavy time in taiji bay japan after your peaceful protest in those bloody waters and the rumour was that you were wanted by the japanese mafia yakuza is that true or was it a myth `the surfing media there which had previously put me on the covers of all of their magazines refused to even mention our peaceful gathering or my name in anyway dr after we left taiji and `the cove apparently every surf store along their coast was `visited by some heavies who were looking for us or anyone who had helped us with our peaceful action everything associated with me was pulled from the shelves the film and album we had just toured throughout japan was blackballed and prevented from being stocked and all the surfing media there which had previously put me on the covers of all of their magazines refused to even mention our peaceful gathering or my name in anyway the local police there were pressured into wanting to arrest us even though they caught us hours after our paddle out in taiji and let us go this has passed now that people there have true understandings of the kills that take place in taiji this has all changed now that people there know about the kills and see that we weren t just a one off group of foreign surfers against the kills but there are millions of people who want the kills and captures to stop look at the success of the film `the cove

how much moore www.carissamoore.com she started out as the child surfing prodigy who astonished the world and outshone other youthful super athletes her surfing prowess was profiled across you tube magazines and television screens as teenage girls mature surfers and grommets with the addictive fever watched her perform progress and develop into a high performance surfer through local hawaiian contests to national level then onto domination of the world surfing stage at 18 years of age hawaiian rig carissa moore is ranked number one on the asp women s tour in her first year and she has already annihilated her oppositions in three out of seven events for 2011 roxy pro gold coast commonwealth bank beachley classic and the billabong rio pro in brazil gcsurf caught up with carissa four years ago when she began her asp career at her first roxy pro event at snapper rocks now to back it up for the second time i grabbed a few words off her after she claimed the opening wct event on the 2011 asp women s tour · photo blake kueny 6 gcsurf winter 2011

did you enjoy yourself on the gc for the roxy pro do you favor any other gc waves other than snapper rocks cm i love the gold coast i forget the spots that i surfed along the coast in the past when i went adventuring i have definitely caught my most memorable waves from snapper down to kirra is it intimidating living up to the hype of being the next dominate influence in the world of women s professional surfing cm i try not to think about what other people want or expect of me i have my own personal goals and just try to focus on them most of the pressure comes from myself more than anything what is it like competing against young gun rookies like laura coco and paige who are hungry for a world title first time/second time round on tour cm the talent of the girls on tour has gotten so high in the past two years that every heat is challenging and exciting you really have to be on your toes and surf every heat at your best in order to come out on top what makes the dream tour a dream for you and do you have a favourite event on tour cm getting to travel the world and do something that i love is what makes the dream tour a dream for me i wish we did have some better venues but hopefully in the future that will improve i think that new zealand was my favorite event on tour last year the overall experience the people the place and the event was magical how has the tour improved your surfing and style cm surfing with girls that have so much talent and drive has pushed me to be more creative and fine tune my style what would be your ideal competition wave cm a right hand barreling point break similar to snapper would probably be an ideal competition wave how much do you want a world title cm i would love to win a world title but more importantly i just want to perform at my best and be an exciting entertainer i feel like a world title will stem from that with nike slowly forming the finest surfing team how do you feel nike will push your surfing to the next level cm i feel very lucky to be apart of nike s surf team they are so supportive and really treat their athletes well filming for the nike girls movie leave a message this past year has definitely motivated me and pushed my surfing i think with their support i will be inspired to try new things do you think nike will positively influence the surfing scene as it is branching out into the surfing industry with no surfing roots cm i definitely think nike will positively influence the surfing scene as an outside company i believe they can really expand our sport to wider audiences and bring more support to different events us open this past year nike went over and beyond i can t wait to see what they have in store for the future what is a usual day for you when you are not surfing or traveling cm a usual day for me involves surfing my day starts off with a surf session gym for a couple hours home by late morning rest do some business stuff back to the beach for a second session and then bed by 830 i have a fun daily routine would you ever live anywhere else than honolulu hawaii cm i love hawaii and it is hard to imagine living anywhere else i truly believe that home is where the people you love are and with them i could live anywhere i do love new zealand though so i could definitely see that as a second home i was very impressed with your www.carissamoore com website layout and personal stories how often do you blog about your surfing life cm i need to do a better job with updating it more often i love writing and i think it is a really cool way to document and look back on my life and travels and everything that goes on any aspirations for 2011 cm aspirations for 2011 continue to surf have fun and enjoy every moment with the people i love story and q&a by brieane keay · photo jason kenworthy · photo jason kenworthy gcsurf www.goldcoastsurf.com.au 7

surfer marcus aboody · photo steve condon surfer allysa lock · photo darren simondson account by tappa www.tappaproductions.com surfer brodie doyle · photo darren simondson with the sets increasing in size as the day went on most impressive as the finals hit the water were the young ones kiani dobbyn and alyssa lock were out the back the little ones making it look like hawaii and it was great seeing 10-12 year old girls charging the sets and the paddle out with no fear a special mention to alyssa who at 10 pushed the older girls all the way to pick up 2nd in the under 16 girls final as well the flea boys were not to be outdone with kirra surfer dexter muskins taking the final with the competitive nouse of an adult and he had to be on his game with the `man-turning burleigh surfer liam o brien and luke condon pushing him all the way the legends final was just that with 1978 world champion wayne rabbit bartholomew getting the wood over ross roadsong marshall and rabbit had lost none of his talent or competitive urge the women s final saw the doyle twins take the chocolates with amiya taking control early with powerful surfing from start to finish and all four finalists have a real dig the masters final was a special with no man more determined and more on a mission than ant mikellides ant showed he wanted the win from the start surfing with power and aggression to take the title in honour of his brother-in-law bk then things got real serious the junior final saw soli bailey almost needing a snorkel he was so long in the tube scoring his 2nd perfect 10 of the event in the final sam morgan made soli work for the title but great tube sense and aggressive progressive surfing saw soli take the title next up was the senior final and could have been a wqs final in anyone s book danny wills came out blazing but marcus aboody came back on his last wave to just pip willsy at the post with shane wehner leaving his run a bit late in 3rd simon massey waveless in 4th how many events have a senior division with 2 former wct surfers and two former wqs surfers in the final only at byron then the stage was set for the open final the semi-finals were ballistic and the final did not disappoint byron boy and 2011 easter bunny real cute in the ears and tail on the pushbike nic colby opened with the first wave of the final smashing 3 full tilt verticle cracks off the lip to post an excellent score for his first wave then the garrett parkes show started tubes vertical hooks pop-shove-its were on the menu and garrett served it up and was a clear winner to all on the beach james wood came back right at the death after a slow start pushing nic colby to 3rd but just not enough to push parkesy out of 1st place luke stickley pulled off a massive air but could not find a second wave every surfer in the final getting close to excellent rides the presentation at the great northern was packed and those who were over 18 rocked on to the sounds of british india and others disappeared into the ether of the byron bay nightlife people think byron is tourists hippies backpackers yuppies and alternative rich people but if you want to see the real byron and the real people get down to the byron easter classic next year real people great waves and amazing spirit bk and love rules see you at the easter classic 2012 once again it was my usual easter trip down to byron bay yes the bluesfest was on but the real good-times were had on the sand as well as in the mud and music the byron easter classic steeped in history once again had a red-hot field divisions which saw surfers grommets little wahinis women and legends compete in one of the most prestigious amateur events in the country if not the world the list of events champions reads like a who s who of surfing over several eras and once again the waves and the surfing did not disappoint the venue was the beach-breaks at broken head with south-straddy like peaks on offer for the 3 days of the event surfing was of an awesome standard with champions of the future and the past putting on a display for the hundreds of spectators who came along and the weather conditions threatened but did not disrupt the good times it was great to see was 2 generations of surfers competing fathers and sons in their separate divisions it was hard to tell which generation was the most serious or competitive the first day was hectic with double banks for an eight-hour stint as the 200 plus competitors hit the waves the second day saw a drop in the swell but there was still plenty of action to be had the groms to the legends showing their stuff the best part of the event was the spirit with the competitors living up to the spirit of the man the event was held in honour of the legendary ben king or bk the finals day saw an increase in swell at daylight it was 1-2 foot with a few sets by 9am it was 3-4 foot 2011 byron easter classic results open 1st 2nd 3rd 1st 2nd 3rd 8 garrett parkes james wood lost in lala land be careful warned everyone before we left it s dangerous they said violent and volatile in fact a month earlier an ausaid worker had been raped close to madang a budding tourist town on the mainland s north coast and while the news was preoccupying it was also thrilling to hear the words `bow and arrow and `surfing used in the same sentence with the exception of a chubby british-looking couple there were only silent stares from black as night melanesian faces half a dozen thick on both sides which lined the path to the domestic terminal once inside it was a matter of wriggling through the mosh pit at the check-in desk and getting amongst the rank and pervasive body odour of a dozen local men inconvenienced and disgruntled travellers will tell you that air niugini is bedlam and you could be waiting days to get on a flight which might be true and sure we did have to stay a night in moresby on account of the chaos but air niugini covered the exorbitant hotel and after having been stung by so many airlines getting on the next day without paying a dime for our board bags was a bonus `we drove through the hot dry dusty roads alongside dilapidated decades-old buildings where only locals loitered under the shade of leafy trees girls said lou nusa island retreat s surf guide as he greeted us at kavieng airport welcome to the wild west we drove through the hot dry dusty roads alongside dilapidated decades-old buildings where only locals loitered under the shade of leafy trees hearing our plans to play it by ear lou was keen to point out that this really could be lawless like the wild west particularly during the holidays when he said the locals get on the turps and all hell can break loose but on the flip side the once-gold coaster said the line-up is empty surfing around here is like the 70 s there s no tension in the line-up like there is back home he wasn t wrong things were looking a bit flat around nusa but we were keen to pop the tropical cherry so headed 20 minutes north by banana boat to the more exposed ral island a tiny sand and palm fringed jewel where we surfed glassy albeit lazy 3-foot waves it s a shifty right hander that wraps around ral s reef and peaks in a few different spots lou had it dialled and was laughing the entire 200 metres down the line as he jagged the random wide ones the next day things had picked up and we scored a waveathon no bikini pass needed here we were surfing picturesque waves with only a handful of local lads who were frothing more than us unbelievable the energy kept building and the next morning nago lefts was on and we were into it for me it was a bit of a mind fuck to paddle into because you ve almost got to take off to the right in the direction of the bubbling reef but then it s super fun long and finishes in a racy inside section local shredder and png surf champ titima smashed the sets while his mates hooted non-stop it s borderline crazy out here laughed lou with a wicked grin on his face take your pick of any brand of beer anywhere in the world because they re all golden at the end · photo steve arklay of a hot day s surf we were invited back for a cold surfing new ireland island province a sound track to papua new guinea could start with david bowie s space oddity because as one salty sailor said it s damn remote out here and a queer place to arrive at then anything melodic that lulls you to sleep to in the warm tropical breeze and bam wake up by rage against the blares as your camera is nicked from under your nose in the bottle shop bia stoa yes png is a mixed bag where the melodic and the mental live side by side it s filthy furious and fabulous 12 gcsurf winter 2011 · photo steve arklay

one on the png explorer a surf charter boat run by andrew and his wife jude the explorer is the vessel for the search and its crew epitomise the pioneering spirit of surfing travelling and adventure we listened wide eyed to stories of unchartered reefs uninhibited or uninhabited islands unridden waves about how they scratch their heads at dinner coming up with new names for new breaks and then there s the wave they don t even want to talk about such freedom by christmas eve kavieng s dusty roads were throbbing with queues and crowds it was hot and there was a heavy feel about the place you hear travellers say that flashing a smile is the best way to confront a dodgy situation whilst helping yourself feel more secure granted but in png you still want to watch your back in a two week trip it s hard to scratch the surface but i reckon there s an undercurrent in this raw lawless land the wild glint in the men s eyes hints at an unadulterated lust for life for fucking and fighting we ended up back at nusa down one camera but in one piece and up a bottle of rum christmas rolled by the swell dropped and we were out of a place to stay but like lou had prophesised things just have a way of working themselves out around here the next minute we were being welcomed aboard a 39-foot catamaran called baguette by captain danny and his crew don and rueben all mad spearfishermen after a few bottles of wine the captain was persuaded to sail up to the outer islands off lavongai island new hanover 30 nautical miles north of kavieng for a few days of fishing surfing and new year celebrations if you re keen to jump on a yacht to do this check out adam and dani smith at adventures in paradise they ve got a sick catamaran called tiki tu moored just off nusa island and they know the area and waves like the back of their hand there s just something about rolling about at sea at nature s mercy for wind weather and food speaking of nature the kids athletic and imaginative i think they d be happier playing with an eggs box than an xbox i didn t hear a pikinini cry in the two weeks we were there and they were at once shy and gregarious fearless and cautious cheeky and polite they are incredibly endearing kids and with the genetic anomaly which expresses itself as blond hair unique looking to boot we moored up alongside the png explorer and after a couple of days out of the drink were pumped to get back in and stoked when andrew picked us up en route for a wave bless him with an esky full of beers on ice for the most surreal new years eve session on record somehow new years eve was debaucherous and edifying at the same time we got loaded on the explorer and then left the drinks for ungalik where we d been invited to celebrate with four villages to share songs dances and comical mimes a few of andrew s mates got hammered by betel nut and spent an intense half hour entertaining the villagers with their dribbling at midnight according to lavongai tradition the villagers lit bunches of bound palm fronds along the beach and looking into the black horizon we saw the various island coastlines dotted with fires the kids were running around laughing positively mental burning palms in tow and just like that the trip was over two days after we d flown out a solid ground swell hit the region i don t even want to think about how epic it must ve been happily though png marked the unwinding of time and the opening of doors to see through the social distortion and reach for the sky story by keri algar www.keriruri.wordpress.com gcsurf www.goldcoastsurf.com.au get away this winter to balian bali it s on the west coast of bali about 50 kms or 1½ hours drive from kuta and 20 minutes before medewi balian bali get away · photo www.a.frame.com.au balian is of bali s more secluded good quality surfing spots balian is a river mouth surf break which breaks over large river stones and submerged reef there are 3 main waves 2 rights and one big left balian is also a sacred and spiritual place the word balian means white magic or positive energy and people also come here to meditate relax and rejuvenate · photo marc crosgrave treat yourself to a tropical location holiday away from the tourist crowds good surf the locals are friendly who don t hassle you to buy anything and welcome you to their ceremonies good surf and coconut palms and vegetation all around and no traffic · photo steve arklay · photo steve arklay stay at the asi academy of surfing instructors villa tranquil deluxe accommodation villa minutes from the surf break with amazing 360 degree views to the ocean palm tree fields sacred river and distant mountains individual rooms are available for rental as well as the whole villa at very affordable prices asi accredited surfing instructors receive 10 discount more info and bookings at www.academyofsurfing.com photo steve arklay · 13
