the western weekender friday july 22 2011 news local 3 asylum seekers are constantly part of the national debate but it s only when you hear the personal stories of what refugees leave behind that you truly understand their extraordinary lives and exactly why they seek a new existence in australia stacey moseley discovered a remarkable local story of sadness fear and ultimately triumph in a new life i n the past few months hardly a week has gone by without the term `asylum seeker or `boat person making news headlines for one reason or another these terms often create confusion and the lines between what an asylum seeker a refugee and a boat person is become blurred it can also create anger and frustration towards those who are in genuine need of help but how much do we really know about the human trauma of fleeing your home to fi nd refuge elizabeth chavez did just that when she fled the violent streets of san salvador el salvador with her husband oscar and two young children back in 1988 over 20 years later the distress from the ordeal of applying for refugee status is still evident and friends to come to a country you know nothing about nobody would do that it is desperation pure desperation the violence of the salvadoran civil war was extreme to say the least in 12 years the confl ict took the lives of over 75,000 people violence was an everyday occurrence according to mrs chavez there were bombings killings driveby shootings rapes and assaults every day in san salvador you couldn t trust anyone mrs chavez said assimilating into australian lifestyle while maintaining their el salvador heritage was important for the kingswoodbased family the chavez family learnt english and received government benefits for less than a year after they arrived in australia the three sons with the third born in australia attended kingswood high school where one was named school captain mr chavez has worked to provide for his family since arriving in australia and after raising the children mrs chavez began working for nepean migrant access helping those like her fi nd a place in australia tell us your story email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au it was so hard to leave my family but you have to do what you need to do elizabeth chavez you fi ll out an application go through many interviews get medical tests vaccinations and all the while you do not know if you will be successful or if everyone in your family will get through our process went on for over a year she said unfortunately much of her family was not granted refuge including her mother sisters cousins and in-laws the mother of three sobbed as she recounted the ordeal of leaving her extended family behind it was so hard to leave my family but you have to do what you need to do to keep your children alive you could leave the house and be killed at any moment that is no place for a family mrs chavez said people think of you as criminals but we are not we went through legally but even so you have to think what would drive these people to flee their homes families proud local family david henry oscar junior jeni elizabeth and oscar chavez celebrating 500,000 successful treatments underarms $19 full face $29 brazilian $39 chest $69 half legs $89 full legs $169 penrith clinic ph 02 8014 8914 shop 151 585 high st penrith nsw 2750 full back $149 anti-wrinkle injections $9.90 per unit 1012wwd8111 dermal fillers bondi junction caringbah anti-wrinkle injections laser hair removal skin treatments chatswood darlinghurst drummoyne north rocks north sydney parramatta penrith sydney cbd

4 opinion friday july 22 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds it is fair enough however to say the media has lost its way a few examples in a moment but fi rst i should point out that in a world where `today tonight and `a current affair has more viewers than a serious news program such as `6.30 with george negus it s hard to put across a solid argument that quality news and journalism is what people desire that said seven s 6pm news bulletin attracts something like 1.3 million viewers a night and nine s is also over a million so there is indeed a craving for news beast is rupert murdoch the man thought to be amongst the most powerful on the planet i was rather bleary eyed on wednesday after spending most of the night watching the uk parliamentary inquiry into the news of the world phone hacking scandal the powerful image of rupert murdoch was replaced with that of a frail somewhat confused individual who looked legitimately overwhelmed by the whole situation he constantly wanted to defer questions to son james and the awkward silences were somewhat deafening under threat from the digital age where we apparently want our news at our fi ngertips newspapers still clearly wield a significant amount of power so much so in fact that it appears the phone hacking scandal at one of the world s most successful papers could very much bring down an empire the news of the world is now gone and rightly so but the ramifications are far and wide in fact the ramifications go well beyond news international and well beyond rupert murdoch it has brought into question the media as a whole and just how far the public expect journalists to go for a story on one hand we hear the demand for stories is greater than ever technology means people want frequent updated and regular news on the other there is complete public disdain when the personal lives of individuals are compromised by a journalist stepping over the line knowing exactly where that line is has never been more difficult 1012wwd3527 y the news of the world is now gone and rightly so but the ramifications are far and wide but what the news of the world scandal has taught us is that there are consequences to the stuff that journalists broadcast in whatever medium in the hunt for a good story it can be difficult to remember that human beings are the fodder real people real feelings have a look at sydney radio station 2gb which wields a significant amount of power in this city with a massive audience share and some of the most influential broadcasters in the country such as ray hadley alan jones and chris smith hadley who successfully made the transition from sports commentator to a ratings-winning morning show host will never claim to be a journalist he has said many times on air that he is a broadcaster not a journalist the abc s alison carabine questioned chris smith s push of a carbon tax rally during her breakfast show last friday when she was speaking to 2gb boss ian holland is it really the role of a media outlet to try and influence policy like this the traditional role of the media is to cover a political issue such as the carbon tax not to try and kill it off she asked but the traditional role of the media is perhaps dead and buried for commercial stations like 2gb this stuff rates the result is that legitimate argument about the for and against is sometimes lost in the process i still use the example of the way the media covered david bradbury and julia gillard s visit to a local family in emu plains last week of how the media sometimes distorts the reality the media knows stuff like this is set up often for their benefit yet the daily telegraph went to town implying that ms gillard had stumbled across the only pro carbon tax household in the street just a short time after that house visit something the media itself craves because of the photo opportunities it brings ms gillard headed to westfield penrith where she was out in the open and more importantly open to criticism that visit got significantly less coverage than the household one the media salivated over as generations change and technology changes with it the traditional news cycle is set for a major shake-up what we do need though is to ensure that the very foundation of the media and the very fi rst lesson any journalist receives which is to always get both sides of the story remains in tact whether it be the carbon tax a rugby league scandal or even conjecture over local child care it s always important to get both sides of the story because in most cases there is a legitimate argument to be had as for crossing the line news of the world didn t just cross it they bolted past it amidst the changing face of the media we ll soon figure out just where the public expects that line to be 1012wwd8409 paul th um bsup from garry tippins he d like to thank the local paramedics and the staff and doctors at norwest private hospital for their help the western weekender friday july 22 2011 news local 7 stations investing in soil carbon which is widely recognised by scientists as having enormous benefits in reducing carbon emissions and providing direct incentives for business and industry to reduce their emissions the coalition would also encourage tree plantations on non-prime agricultural land and investing in solar and other renewable energy is a carbon tax the only way to reduce carbon emissions georgina woods director of climate action network australia said there are three generally accepted models for reducing carbon emissions an ets is a market based approached where the government caps the number of tonnes of carbon pollution produced and sets a limit on the number of permits allowing carbon pollution production meaning that businesses must bid against each other to win carbon permits an ets commonly referred to as a `cap and trade system allows the government to directly control pollution levels whilst making businesses pay for their pollution a cap and trade system is acknowledged as the least cost method of carbon pollution reduction as businesses who must buy carbon pollution permits will be forced to fi nd cheaper clean production methods to reduce their costs the second method is a carbon tax approach a carbon taxing system sets a price on carbon pollution but does not directly control the volume of pollution produced theoretically a rich company could pay the tax and choose not to change their pollution levels the third model is a direct investment approach where the government `buys carbon abatement essentially the government would be paying companies to either shut down or change their production methods it tends to be the most expensive approach and allows the government strict control over which industries are targeted the rhetoric focuses on big businesses and households what about penrith s small businesses the key to the carbon tax s success is in the ability to change the carbon footprint junkie culture of penrith according to deputy chairman of penrith business alliance dr paul wakefield dr wakefield said associations like penrith business alliance will have to perform an educational function to ensure businesses understand what their carbon footprint is and ways they can reduce it hopefully we can make a difference to our carbon footprint but it will be a waiting game to see how smaller fi rms respond to the carbon tax he said there has been a lot of talk about households and big businesses but nothing really said of small and medium-sized businesses so i would like to see more modelling for effects on these businesses what will electricity prices be in one year s time integral energy services the penrith local government area th ree weeks ago they increased their electricity prices by 15.5 per cent in accordance with the decisions made by the independent pricing and regulatory tribunal ipart according to the federal government electricity prices will rise an additional 10 per cent under a carbon tax equivalent to $3.30 per week but the full impact on electricity prices cannot be determined until the tax takes effect according to consumer watchdog group choice families are experiencing a feeling of bill shock due to the electricity price increases allowed by ipart and expected increases under a carbon tax it said the main concern should be the increasing network costs for nsw electricity a 17-year-old colyton boy has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and multiple malicious damage offences the boy
