new additions east texas outdoors magazine welcomes two new additions to our team sidney horton intern student at ut tyler i grew up in rockwall 20 miles east of dallas with my parents rick and traci my sisters lindsay and brittany and my brother kyle i always loved being outdoors growing up whether it was riding bikes four wheelers or going fishing and hunting i was always up for an adventure growing up my parents had a lake house on cypress springs and that was where we spent most of our summers wakeboarding tubing fishing and jet skiing now with all of us kids moving out and making lives of our own my parents have traded the lake house in for two little cabins on lake fork bought up a bunch of land and have a ranch house in nevada tx they have horses angus cows a catfish pond and a garden to keep all of us and our parents occupied when we are home since being outdoors is how my family bonds i will always have an appreciation for it when i am not home with my family i am going to school and working in tyler right now i am going to school for journalism i plan on settling in east texas after i finish up with school i would miss the trees and the big city and small town mixture that tyler has to offer luke clayton editor at large veteran outdoor writer outdoors writer/radio host/book author luke clayton has been addicted to everything outdoors related since his childhood when he grew up hunting and fishing in rural northeast texas luke pens a weekly newspaper column that appears in over fifty newspapers luke is the pro staff director for ghostblind and on the pro staffs of mathews bows inverter broadheads and carbon express arrows luke has recently assumed duties as editor at large for east texas outdoors magazine follow his columns and listen to his weekly radio show throughout the year and you ll surely get exposed to many facets of the outdoor life east texas outdoors magazine pg 3

editor s letter it appears the dog days of summer are upon us here in east texas a little smile turns up the corners of my mouth as i find myself doing the same thing every year wishing it would be cool when it s hot and hot when it s cool however that is one of the things to love about this area typically we don t experience terrible extremes but get to enjoy the activities and beauty provided by the four seasons speaking of seasonal activities it was especially nice enjoying the climate controlled environment at the tyler cattle barons gala this year the air-conditioned tents provided a welcome retreat for all who attended this amazing event there are so many generous dedicated people who coordinate this fundraiser benefitting the american cancer society they work so very hard and consistently do an incredible job our hats are off to all involved for yet another successful event i would like to take a moment to thank all our wonderful friends and family for their amazing support of east texas outdoors magazine the response has been overwhelmingly incredible and each day brings something new and exciting we are truly blessed and humbled doing what we do each day the people of east texas are incomparable and we are incredibly proud being part of this community time and again we heard the same complaint about hogs and the desire for information on this topic to help address this and many other issues we excitedly welcome aboard luke clayton and his experience and love of the outdoors as we continue covering the people and communities of east texas we take a look at a few of the many opportunities to get out there and camp in the great outdoors making memories doesn t mean you have to break the bank in the process there are so many wonderful possibilities for fun just around the corner as always we appreciate and look forward to our reader s feedback please continue to let us know what you think so we are providing content that is useful and interesting see you outdoors pg 10 etoutdoors.com

around east texas 3rd annual langdon polaris ride the 3rd annual langdon polaris ride was held june 10-12 at river bend offroad park on the banks of the red river near texarkana the event offered a lot of mud and fun for the people who visited the new park they want to invite everyone to participate in the 2011 texas redneck games august 4-7 at tree offroad park in alto for more information visit redneckoffroadparty.com budlight trail lake fork 6/25/2011 1st craig anderson-steve anderson 2nd chris barbour-kyle barbou big bass jackie jayroe texas state youth bowfishing tournament the texas state youth bowfishing tournament was held at lake palestine resort may 14th they signed up 73 children for everything from a jump house and 3-d archery shoot to a free lunch and bowfishing tournament 45 kids went out to participate in bowfishing that night several bows guns toys games and many other fun outdoor items were given to the kids pg 14 etoutdoors.com

on july 25th the local community came out to attend the 3rd annual clays for kids sporting event at rose city flying clays in tyler local farmers agents coordinated this event raising $7,500 to benefit the march of dimes participants and attendees enjoyed good fun and fellowship while supporting this worthwhile cause custom trophy buckles were awarded to participants as prizes 3rd annual clays for kids budlight trail sam rayburn 6/26/2011 1st todd castledine-jason bonds 2nd glen freeman-jeff rice 3rd jason wells-vic cooper a large crowd including members of the media gathered at athens scuba park to witness the sinking of a 60-foot beechcraft hawker 125-600 during memorial day weekend the jet can be used as a training tool for public safety rescue divers firefighters and police agencies to prepare personel in the event of an underwater rescue jet sinking at athens scuba park east texas outdoors magazine pg 15
