eshowe history the siege and relief of eshowe 1879 1 prelude inyezane o.1 column of the british invasion force under colonel charles pearson had been ordered to establish an advanced base at eshowe before continuing the advance upon ulundi the force crossed the tugela river from natal into zululand on 12 january 1879 the advance was smooth and steady until 22 january when a zulu force attempted to bar their way the british were camped about 4 miles south of the inyezane river which they had crossed the previous day beneath a steep ridge with three spurs leading down towards the river and surrounded by scrub a prominent knoll sat about halfway and a small kraal near the left of the crest n s hortly after 08:00 a small number of zulus appeared near the knoll on the ridge and a company of the natal native contingent nnc under lieutenant hart were sent up the spur after them while this company gave chase a mass of zulus appeared over the crest of the ridge and began pouring downwards these men were the left horn of a 6,000 strong force dispatched at the same time as the army that engaged the british at isandlwana who were preparing just over the crest to attack the british camp this left horn had been prompted into a premature attack by the advance of lieutenant hart s company and in the face of this advance the nnc fled leaving their european officers and ncos to make a fruitless stand before being swept aside as soon as hart and his men began firing the camp prepared for defence forming a hasty firing line a naval company and two companies of buffs with a gatling gun and 7-pounders moved up to the knoll opening up across the advancing zulu column thus when the zulus emerged from scrub and began their assault on the camp they were taking heavy fire on both their flank and front of their force the zulus wavered and then withdrew the way they had come w hile the left horn was being repulsed the rest of the zulu impi appeared over the crest the kraal was taken and switching their guns to focus on it the force previously attacking the left horn s flank advanced up the slope and captured the kraal this position allowed the british to move the gatling gun onto the crest where its rapid fire soon drove the zulus off the centre and left end of the ridge as the british mounted troops came up the right-hand spur to complete the action the successful counter-attack resulted in 10 british killed and 16 wounded the zulu impi withdrew with 350 killed.

computer tips and tricks building a website part four 3 with all the information from the past three articles you should have your website just about finished the last thing left to do is to make it look nice o ne of the features that i love the most about using cms software to design a website is that you can change the look of the whole website with a single click if you had to design a static website it would have been slightly more complicated w hile the look of a website is not as important as the content it is still nice to have a great looking site and if someone thinks a site is awesome they will tell their friends about it so in the end you get more traffic the website that comes with a scorpnet hosting account also comes with over 700 ready-made website templates there is a link to the downloadable templates on your website when it is first installed and from there you can choose the template that you want and download it as a zip file to activate your new template go to the settings panel and then click on template mng template manager click on browse and select the template that you ve downloaded and select upload once the template is uploaded it will appear in the list of available templates scroll down to your template and click activate your website will instantly have a new look below are just some of the examples t f he templates can easily be customized to suit your needs or you could easily design your own template the templates for this cms system is by far the easiest to create out of all the cms software that i ve used there is also a template and css editor in the settings panel where you can make changes to the template or colors and see instant results rom the series of web design articles you will be able to create a complete website without the hefty fees that developers usually ask the best part is that you can make changes whenever you want and do it just the way you prefer it happy website building hannes coetzee

health tips the common cold continued 6 cause viruses t i he common cold is due to a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract the most commonly implicated virus is a rhinovirus 3050 a type of picornavirus with 99 known serotypes others include coronavirus 1015 influenza 515 human parainfluenza viruses human respiratory syncytial virus adenoviruses enteroviruses and metapneumovirus n total over 200 serologically different viral types cause colds coronaviruses are particularly implicated in adult colds of over 30 coronaviruses 3 or 4 cause infections in humans but they are difficult to grow in the laboratory and their significance is thus less well-understood due to the many different types of viruses and their tendency for continuous mutation it is impossible to gain complete immunity to the common cold risk factors spending time in an enclosed area with an infected person or in close contact with an infected person common colds are droplet-borne infections which means that they are primarily transmitted through breathing in tiny particles that the infected person emits when he or she coughs sneezes or exhales the role of body cooling in causing the common cold is controversial it is the most commonly offered folk explanation for the disease and it has received some experimental evidence one study showed that exposure to the cold causes cold symptoms in about 10 of those exposed and that the subjects experiencing this effect report far more colds overall than those who do not however a variety of other studies do not show such an effect frequently touching eyes nose or mouth with contaminated fingers this behavior somewhat increases the likelihood of transferring viruses from the surface of the hands where they are harmless into the upper respiratory tract where they can infect the tissues some studies show that very frequent hand washing and not touching any mucous membranes can somewhat reduce the likelihood of acquiring a cold among adults a history of smoking extends the duration of illness by about three days getting fewer than seven hours of sleep per night has been associated with a risk three times higher of developing an infection when exposed to a rhinovirus compared to those who sleep more than eight hours per night low blood vitamin d levels are associated with an increased risk of getting a common cold whether this relation is causal has yet to be determined common colds are seasonal occurring more frequently during winter outside of tropical zones this is believed to be partly due to a change in behaviors such as increased time spent indoors which puts infected people in close proximity to other people rather than to exposure to cold temperatures low humidity increases viral transmission rates one theory is that dry air causes evaporation of water thus allowing small viral droplets to disperse farther and stay in the air longer.
