computer tips and tricks building a website part two 3 in the first article i explained the basics of websites it this issue of eshoweguide we will take a look at getting your site registered and creating the first pages t t o register your site you will need a hosting account some hosting accounts come with more functions and addons than others they also differ in pricing from r19 per month to about r1500 per month depending on which hosting company you choose one hosting company that comes with everything you need and a bit extra is scorpnet to register your domain name and sign up for a hosting account visit http www.scorpnet.co.za here are a few ways to create a website you could create all the pages for your site on your computer and upload it to your hosting account this is called a static site and it involves a lot more work than other methods another way to create your website is by using a content management system or cms for short the advantage of a cms website is that you don t need any software or special skills to create your site cms websites do most of the work for you you don t have to worry about menu links and a whole bunch of other small things all you have to do with a cms website is login with your username and password create or edit your pages and as soon as you save them they are online and ready for the world to see popular cms sites include drupal joomla and wordpress while all of them work slightly different they all do the same thing another advantage of using a cms is that if you decide to change the look of your site you just upload a new template or theme and your whole website looks new and fresh i highly recommend using a cms to create any website no matter how big or small w ith most hosting accounts you ll have to install the cms yourself when you sign up for a hosting account with scorpnet a cms is already installed for you all you have to do is choose one of the 600 themes and edit the existing pages you will also receive all the documentation you need to create a stunning website menus are automatically created when you add pages so visitors can easily find all the pages on your site to create a new page you need to log into your website by clicking on the login link the username and password will be emailed to you when you sign up once you are logged in extra functions will appear there are two modes when you are logged into your site edit and normal mode to create a page you ll need to go into edit mode by clicking on the edit mode link if you want your page to be after your fisrt page for example go to the first page and scroll down to the bottom of that page make sure you are on a blank line at the end of the page and click on the [h1 link in the editor the [h1 link tells the cms that you are starting a new page type the title of your page and go to the next line the title of your page will also be the text that is used for your menu item once you are on the line below your page title start typing your page content the editor in the cms works similar to ms word or other word prosessors when you are done with the content click on the [save button and you re done the cms will create a menu entry for you and put the page in the correct place there is also a menu manzger and image manager if you need to add images to your pages or need to change the menu this cms is one of the smallest and easiest to work with and it comes with a contact form photo album and lots more the manual that comes with the cms explains in detail how to create pages and do more advanced things with your website the cms automatically creates a backup when you log out so it is easy to restore your website should you make a mistake using a cms to create and manage your site saves you hours of work scorpnet hosting accounts support almost all of the cms available on the internet and you can easily change to another cms should you not be happy with the one that came with your account t hat is about all there is to creating pages and in the next edition we ll start finishing the site hannes coetzee

health tips baby colic 4 what are the symptoms of colic i t is not uncommon for newborn babies to go through periods when they appear abnormally irritable or seemingly cry for no reason however if you suspect your baby is suffering from colic you may look for the following symptoms cries vigorously for long periods despite efforts to console symptoms occur around the same time each day or night often after meal times and usually ending as abruptly as they began shows signs of gas discomfort and abdominal bloating has a hard distended stomach with knees pulled to the chest clenched fists flailing arms and legs and an arched back experiences frequent sleeplessness irritability and fussiness i n most cases colic is the worst pain a baby has thus experienced it is usually manifested as an acute abdominal pain with intense spasmodic cramping but since colicky babies cannot describe exactly what distresses them it is hard for parents to know the precise cause of their distress infantile colic is most common in the first few weeks to four months of an infant s life rarely does it endure past six months of age pediatricians often use the rule of three to diagnose colic a baby that cries for three or more hours per day at least three times per week within a three month period about 25 percent of babies worldwide meet the official rule of threes criteria for medical diagnosis of colic what causes infants to become colicky t here is no single consistent cause for colic that experts all agree upon however a lot of evidence suggests that colic may be caused in different ways in different babies there appear to be several contributing factors that when occurring in combination are likely to result in colic pain and discomfort newborns have an immature digestive system that has never processed food the gastrointestinal system is literally just learning to function muscles that support digestion have not developed the proper rhythm for moving food efficiently thought the digestive tract furthermore newborns lack the benevolent bacterial flora probiotics that develop over time to aid digestion this explains why almost all infants outgrow colic within the first six months certain foods eaten by lactating mothers contain volatile chemicals and allergens that in a small percentage of infants result in colic discomfort and digestive upset through lactation trace elements of cruciferous vegetables and other gas producing foods may be passed via breast milk to baby and cause gas and bloating infants often swallow air while feeding or during strenuous crying which increases gas and bloating further adding to their discomfort s ince infants nervous systems are so immature it is possible for them to get overloaded with unfamiliar sights and sounds infants that are easily overloaded often experience more severe

book review chris carter the crucifix killer 10 carter chris the crucifix killer hardback 432 pages aug 2009 publisher simon schuster ltd isbn 1847376223 l i ondon-based brazilian-born american-schooled former criminal psychological researcher and glam rock guitarist chris carter opens his crime writing account with a twisted serial killer tale set in los angeles n carter s debut the crucifix killer an isolated and grisly crime scene gets a whole lot worse for lapd homicide detective robert hunter when a strange double-cross is found on the body of a sadistically tortured murder victim the same cross that was the signature of the infamous and executed crucifix killer a signature that had never been publicly revealed arter creates hunter as a former wunderkind profiler whose phd thesis apparently became a training manual for the fbi after some past mistakes including helping convict an innocent man for killing his wife only to discover after the convict s suicide that another man was responsible hunter has lost his earlycareer lustre he likes whisky sleeping around and is plagued by insomnia c i n the crucifix killer hunter and his rookie partner carlos garcia are charged with tracking down a vicious killer whose actions bring the past brutally crashing into the present and raise disturbing questions about the original investigation arrest and execution are they now facing a copycat with intimate knowledge of the earlier killings or did the police including hunter himself perhaps make another massive mistake and the real killer is still out there while an innocent man was executed o verall the crucifix killer is a mixed bag unfortunately some of carter s storytelling skills don t yet match his storylines he has a reasonable sense for pace builds tension nicely creates some engrossing set-pieces and nice imagery and does a good job with hooks set-ups and later reveals but falls short elsewhere disturbingly regular outbreaks of clanging dialogue a lack of subtext extremely cliched or bland description and annoyingly redundant adverbs and attributions often pulled me out of an otherwise exciting story and spoiled what could have been a very good read a s i read i found myself groaning and rolling my eyes all too regularly but to be fair i also found myself continuing to turn the pages in spite of the dialogue and description the crucifix killer does hook you very well at the beginning and despite the flaws in the storytelling the story itself is one you want to follow right to the end carter does a good job at making you want to know c arter also does a reasonable job showing the effects of a tough investigation on those involved beyond the professional sphere the new case revival of an old case puts extra pressure on hunter who already has one dead partner and fears that his new girlfriend isabella could also become a target young garcia struggles to keep the required balance between his demanding new job and his relationship with his wife o verall the flaws create a lightness and lack of authenticity or depth that diminishes what could have been a great crime novel instead this debut is a solid not spectacular start as a storyteller carter shows promise needs improvement.

photography 14 composing an art photograph the difference between someone who takes a photograph and an art photographer is that the latter realises that the cornerstone of fundamental design is composition folks easily take this element for granted getting swept away by coolness or locale of the subject composition is more that what your subject is and how it s posed it comprises all that plus the background foreground color lighting and framing always remember to compose first and expose second all great photographs astart with sound composition techniques which are basic rules of how to put together a pleasing image when you compare two shots say using the same subject and lighting one of a sloppily composed image with one that s thoughtful and crafted you can immediately tell the difference and when you follow these rules remember that you follow in the footsteps of masters of art and architecture the ancient greeks and romans practiced these same tenets 20 centuries before the advent of photography it s obvious in their architecture most photographs need a focus anything inherently interesting to your viewer from a looming tree and its shadow to a church s dome in the picture below you can compare the left image has too many unnecessary objects in the frame that render the image unfocused the right image is composed artfully and by the way call them guidelines instead of rules if you want to know too that after you master these guidelines you can bend them to your artistic desire simplicity keeping your shots clean and uncluttered is paramount to presenting a great art photograph that s not to say that you can t shoot something detailed and ornamented but make sure your audience sees what you want to show not a photo cluttered with unnecessary background distractions for example consider the architecture of the sydney opera house people gather around this australian landmark snapping pictures left and right to present this wonderful architecture artfully to your viewer or to present any subject artfully to your viewer crop it boldly and closely either while you shoot ideally or later in photoshop
