www.celiac.mb.ca celi-yak fall 09 president s message it s fall 2009 already in another few months the manitoba chapter will be hosting the 2010 canadian celiac association national conference as you can susan finlay see from the rave president manitoba chapter reviews bonnie and heather gave the speakers at the may 29-31 conference in waterloo the manitoba chapter is going to have to work hard to meet the standards set by sue newell and the 2009 conference committee that said the manitoba chapter is absolutely up to the challenge over the summer the mayo clinic s dr joseph murray our 2010 keynote speaker http mayoresearch.mayo.edu staff/murray_ja.cfm released results from his ground-breaking research about the fivefold increase in the incidence of celiac disease over the past 50 years that astonishing news has generated a cascade of other media exposure for celiac organizations in both canada and the united states janet dalziel our national president appeared on the ctv national news in july an article in the globe mail prompted margaux watt from winnipeg s cbc radio to arrange an interview about celiac disease sue newell s story originally published in the toronto sun was reprinted in the winnipeg sun just think celiac disease got all this unsolicited publicity and it wasn t even celiac awareness month when you re a celiac every month is celiac awareness month in the last couple of months i was able to join the group dinners at eat bistro or confusion corner bar grill discovered a taste of laos with its dedicated gluten-free menu found a vastly expanded and clearly labelled gluten-free section in the superstore on mcphillips and enjoyed some great gluten-free food at folklorama as a veteran attendee i have found that the hispanic and asiatic pavilions are good choices for eating gluten-free as rice and vegetables tend to be mainstays of their diets when i asked the fellow serving at the irish pavilion what was in the food the question didn t stump him at all he immediately referred to the ingredient list posted on the wall and pointed out what i could and couldn t eat on their menu it was no big deal for him but a real step forward for celiac to be able to participate in great events like folklorama i was disappointed that the cuban pavilion had run out of flan before i got there but it was nice to know that at least one pavilion had a gluten-free dessert on the menu if not on the shelf serving our large geographic base and various constituents is not always straightforward but persistence and creativity does work iva yeo and i had the opportunity to connect with the manitoba gastroenterology nurses group at their annual conference in june these are the people who work in the clinics and procedure rooms where you and i are diagnosed as they are often the first people in contact with the newly diagnosed celiac the chapter has been working on providing information pamphlets for their offices even though all of the canadian celiac association s brochures are available on the internet at http www.celiac.ca englishcca/eproducts.html people still appreciate receiving printed information http www.celiac.ca/pdfs glutenconnection-eng.pdf takes you to the online version of the new bilingual resource celiac disease the gluten connection published by health canada in conjunction with the canadian celiac association and the fondation quebecoise de la maladie coeliaque look for a new brochure about the benefits of membership in the manitoba chapter and the canadian celiac association this fall remember how h1n1 influenza had grabbed all the headlines in may well celiac disease shared the opening banner of the health canada website for the whole month of may i think that really is telling about the stature of celiac disease in canada today health officials are expecting a resurgence of h1n1 by the time you read these words don t forget that as a person with a chronic illness you are eligible for both a free influenza shot and a free pneumococcal shot remember that the flu shot must be repeated annually but that the pneumococcal shot only needs to be given once see http www.manitoba.ca/health 3 flu/docs/flu.pdf for more information in the middle of july when the rest of you were at the lake or at least wishing the weather was balmy enough to be at the lake joanne craig introduced the new class of chefs-to-be at red river college to celiac disease we re hoping for great weather on saturday september 5 when the manitoba chapter will have a booth at the st norbert farmers market thanks to marilyn firth for the opportunity to be at the market have you made it over the border to pick up some of the new gluten-free cake mixes made by betty crocker yet if not there will be a great opportunity for both learning and shopping november 6th and 7th the red river celiacs 4th gluten intolerance education conference to be held at the holiday inn in fargo will feature dr cynthia rudert gastroenterologist from atlanta and shelley case celiac guru and dietitian from regina check out http www.redriverceliacs.org for all thedetails that will just be a precursor to our own june 4-6 conference at the victoria inn near the airport besides dr murray whose outstanding work was referred to three times in the sessions at the waterloo conference without any prompting by us our own dr donald duerksen recipient of a canadian celiac association research award for a second time will be speaking about his latest research we re pleased that sherry torkos a published author/pharmacist from ontario will be on the program see http www.sherrytorkos.com/media.html for a taste of what she has to offer more great speakers are being confirmed stay tuned although there is a dedicated group of volunteers involved in planning all aspects of the conference from the gluten-free food to the facts to the fun more people are and will be needed to help with a whole myriad of tasks both before and during the conference think about sharing your time and talents just contact the manitoba chapter at 772-6979 or send an email to office@celiac.mb.ca susan finlay president manitoba chapter

www.celiac.mb.ca celi-yak fall 09 news and notes thoughts from celiac awareness month in manitoba may 2009 notes from experiences of joanne craig and iva yeo sat may 2nd susan finlay and i spent several hours at the st boniface research centre where the gastroenterology nurses were having a conference the booth was well attended with several visitors and many questions and comments one of the highlights for me was the fact that the chron s and ulcerative colitis table was situated next to ours and we were able to share many stories with nancy nagy we managed to enjoy the presentations by 3 outstanding physicians as well wed may 13th joanne craig spent the morning at our table at the victoria hospital and irene hallgrimson and i spent the afternoon listening to many staff members sharing pamphlets and selling a few cookbooks and dictionaries we kept track of those who stopped by and included many of their comments and questions thursday may 14 i was invited to be the 2nd presenter susan finlay had spoken to a separate group on tuesday the 12th at the simkin centre on mcgillvary boulevard those attending were registered dieticians from a variety of extended care facilities i was most impressed with the discussions regarding the relatively new blood test for celiac discovery and their understanding of the absolute necessity to follow up positive blood results with a jejunal biopsy before proceeding with a life long gluten free diet one rd stated that a couple of years ago they followed those patients that had osteoporosis gastrointestinal symptoms and had them tested first with the blood test second with a biopsy if the test was positive she stated that there had been several diagnosis of celiac disease made tues may 19-joanne craig and i spent a delightful hour at the st james legion hall speaking with retired government employees we were surprised by the great number of questions asked by members in the audience one of whom had celiac disease unfortunately i made the comment in summing up our presentation that despite the inconveniences of having celiac disease there are so many other disorders that would cause greater problems i do not have ms copd or post polio syndrome so it is easier to cope with cd when the president of the group stepped forward to thank us in his response he said i happen to have ms from the sound of things i would rather have that than what you have to deal with it cannot but help to spread the cd word as often as we can new fundraising program we re thrilled to announce a unique new fundraising program that will allow everyone to donate hundreds of dollars a year without dipping into their pockets we all buy groceries right this program that will enable anyone who buys groceries to donate without incurring any extra cost imagine here s how buy grocery cards from the manitoba chapter sobey s available at oct 3 general meeting safeway available at dec 12 general meeting and use them to buy your groceries every month let s say you spend $125 each week the manitoba chapter receives about 8 of that or about $520 per year s susan usa onique nne m the food was delicious and plentiful susan heat enjoyin h g pizza er pizza we had a very successful 10th annual walk-a-thon thanks to our very generous sponsors uns hot dog b kinnick kinnic d water s bottle er s drug mey freybe wiener s s fine foods cash hoffma n 7

celi-yak fall 09 www.celiac.mb.ca a personal experience with celiac disease dear readers mommy my stomach hurts eight months of stomach aches doctor appointments needles tests lack of energy feeling sick and many tears we finally got the news that our son paolo was diagnosed with celiacs disease on february 18th 2009 at a follow up appointment with dr p sathya at the children s hopsital paolo s gastroenterologist told me the results of his biopsy simply stating `your son s test results have come back positive for celiacs disease `let me share with you what this means for your son for you and your family i know i was sitting there and i was listening to her as she was telling me the effects of celiacs about the change in his diet new foods different way of eating and the no s wheat barley rye etc reading labels his own toaster and labeling his `gluten-free food items gluten-free what s gluten-free i thought she did not rush me through or speak too quickly and answered the few questions that i could muster dr sathya was very thorough and of course mentioned there was a lot of information to absorb for one day and to take it one step at a time that it will all come together i thanked her and took all the information sheets with me to be honest i don t think i heard a word passed `your son tested positive i also didn t process the appointment until the drive home i called my husband tony with the news once i said the words my eyes filled with tears and at this point it had finally registered all the words that i had just heard at the appointment i started playing it all back at this point i didn t really know what it all meant or what was ahead for us but thought what will we do for our friday pizza night we immediately started reading labels googling researching became consumed with the world of celiacs hidden wheat gluten-free wheat in barbecue sauce in soy sauce in licorice so many things we are learning and oh my goodness so many more things to know it all seemed so daunting how were we ever going to figure all this out a few days later my husband i met with dayna weiten registered dietitian at hsc and i brought my list of what seemed like a thousand questions she was great she answered all our questions more she provided us with where to shop for our gf food items now i know what gf stands for and which restaurants would be a safe place to take our son to our delight she said `mona lisa restaurant dayna told us it was a great choice and that they were one of the first restaurants in the city to provide their customers with gluten-free options i was particularly pleased to hear this as my brother joe his wife alfina are the owners dayna also suggested that we go to meyers drugs which offered a great variety off gluten-free options plus it was close to the hospital we popped into meyers it was busy little store and then we saw it we saw the `wall of gluten-free products honestly we heard the angels sing look at all these products i gasped we were like kids in a candy store we felt relief we were smiling we were drawn to a few ladies discussing the gf breads we introduced ourselves and felt some comfort in how receptive they were to help us out and to give us pointers on getting started with the basics pat a lovely lady chatted with us for a long time shared that she had some recipes that `you d never know they were gluten-free through a few emails we ve added some great `does not taste like gluten-free desserts to our gf binder thank you pat for your time kind words great recipes another dear person is monique clement vp of the celiac association mb chapter tony i met monique at mona lisa restaurant she was a guest speaker who shared with the employees a wealth of information regarding celiacs gluten-free cross contamination the importance of listening to the words of the diner when they say i have celiacs disease i am on a gluten-free diet and how to make their dining experience pleasurable just like everyone elses we made arrangements and met with her another time purchased great books that helped our family tremendously especially the 2007 product information guide it just made it seem like the list of food options rose from 10 to 1000 we always read every label just in case ingredients change but believe me for a mom dad and for the sake of our little boy we ve never been so happy to read that aero bars are glutenfree yeah `butter-chicken sauce in the jar yippee and european wieners from costco i guess it helps make you feel like you can still live your life just like everyone else you just have to make different choices monique thank you so very much for spending so much time with us your calm disposition and reassuring words have made us feel like it ll all be okay and thanks for always saying one day at a time truly great advice great wordstoliveby dining out do we bring our son should he eat at home before we go should we not go at all meet up with the rest to the family later our first family restaurant outing was a little stressful to say the least being so new in the gluten-free process we just didn t know what was the best thing to do so we didn t have to deal with our son wanting things everyone else was having because it was just so new for us my husband i went for lunch with the family the kids ate and stayed at home we did not enjoy one moment of that lunch and realized we needed to include paolo in the activities we were involved in and not exclude him as bad as that first experience made us feel we learned a great deal that day like how to manage our outings properly and especially to preplan and do things together as a family we have a large italian family having said that pasta bread baking are a staple in our culture aaaaaggghhhhh how do we explain this to our dear sweet `mange eat more pasta nonnas well it wasn t as difficult as we thought immediately once we explained the situation their pantries were stocked putting meyers drug store out of business wow glutenfree everything as nonna angelina nonna lidia said when paolo comes over he will have alotta food to eat no problem settling in to our new world of prepping food we wanted to make sure paolo felt like he was able to share a normal meal time and his sister natalia 14 brother nikolai 11 make sure of that natalia is a great help the kitchen and ensures all paolo s food is kept uncontaminated and that his continued on page 16 8

www.celiac.mb.ca some interesting news from caa president janet dalziel the press release from the mayo clinic on the increasing prevalence of celiac disease and the four-fold risk of death if undiagnosed certainly grabbed media attention over the last month there have been stories in major newspapers across the country national and local radio and television coverage and health magazines are also taking notice while the mayo clinic study grabbed attention in july the august issue of scientific american a highly respected general circulation science magazine carries a major article on all aspects of celiac disease by dr alessio fasano if you have not already seen this article i urge you to go out and get a copy it is very well written and provides an excellent overall description of cd through the history of its discovery and up to all that is currently known including all the drug therapies that are under investigation i know i learned quite a lot that was new to me and the diagrams used to illustrate the facts are extremely well done the theme of the article is that understanding cd and developing therapies other than the gf diet are important for the study and treatment of many other autoimmune diseases celiac disease may provide great insights into the workings of these other conditions and could lead to effective treatments even cures for them one day a letter from a bride married in winnipeg it s getting close to 2 months since my wedding in winnipeg and i wanted to put forward my gf recommendations that i had while i was in town as i said i would way back when i initially wrote you inquiring about gf bakeries mona lisa s gf pizza was a-m-a-z-i-ng i wish we had mls in montréal they don t make their pizza crust themselves they use kinnickinnick brand i believe and it was bar-none the best gf pizza i have had in the last 2 years including store-bought and home-made in-restaurant crusts they only sell one size medium but i nearly ate the whole thing myself it was that good i also wanted to recommend cakes by celi-yak fall 09 shelley for gf birthday/wedding celebration options she makes nut and chocolatebased gf flourless cakes my friend and i had this option at my wedding reception while everyone else enjoyed the regular wedding cake and it was delicious shelley was very professional her prices overall were amazing and very affordable and she makes a beautiful cake she said she made her gf options flourless because she s very picky about her cakes being of the highest standard and she found using gf-flour mixes to date to be disappointing and not of the quality she s used to everyone and i mean everyone said the cake and gf cupcakes were the best they ever had i hope this will be of some use to your members andrea volunteering saves a life while volunteering at the seven oaks hospital cca display in may i experienced chest pains i went to the emergency and it turned out that i had a heart attack god leads in mysterious ways nettie kiesman 9

celi-yak fall 09 www.celiac.mb.ca report from cca national conference may 2009 dr markku maki dr maki md phd gastroenterologist professor of pediatrics at the university of tampere tampere finland dr maki is an international leader in the field of celiac disease he has headed a research group the celiac disease study group in finland which researches the diagnostics epidemiology genetics and gut mucosal epithelial cell biology of celiac disease his motto is research of today is the treatment of tomorrow he commented that without research celiacs would still be on a banana diet dr maki opened his talk with some history on celiac disease he showed us pictures of young cd patients from years ago with their swollen bellies and the contrast with pictures of people today with cd on our gf diet today we look so healthy in comparison he spoke on the diagnosis of cd and the many blood tests the need for biopsy for final diagnosis and the changing trends in diagnosing it his goal is to reach a point where the method of diagnosis would begin with family history and screening for genetic gluten intolerance with a positive lab test no biopsy would be required today there is much focus on public awareness and education use of the media and use of proper screening his overriding message was the importance of educating those providing primary care we enjoyed dr makai he is very likable and has a wonderful sense of humor we were so lucky to have heard him speak dr jenni zelin dr jeni zelin md runs a family practice at four neighborhoods community health centre in charlottetown pei dr zelin has cd and her son also has it she had symptoms for 22 years before diagnosing herself while in medical school while she was in med school she had only a one hour lecture on cd during her 5 years of training because she is a celiac she views medicine from a different perspective she spoke of a lack of guidelines for doctors to follow after the cd diagnosis should patients be seen yearly what blood tests to order follow up scope doctors love rules to follow like in diabetes heart disease some doctors are well meaning but try to advise about the gf diet without full understanding of it she requests more blood tests for celiac screening than any other md in p.e.i her advice cook bake share be aware of eating out look at other cultures food and enjoy feeling better she closed with this quote from george bernard shaw there is no love more sincere than the love of food marion zakadas marion zarkadas m sc rd is a specialist in nutrition and labelling foods for the canadian gov t she is on the professional board of the cca in 1989 she was diagnosed with cd she said that research on cd involves prevelance diagnosis and screening genetics immune system associated diseases new treatment and diet she gave us an update on the study living with a gf diet the survey we did 72 of the membership responded to the study the first outcomes of this study are the health canada poster explaining celiac disease and the brochure celiac disease the gluten connection panel panel discussion questions were taken from the floor by dr switzer dr maki dr zellin in answering one question dr switzer said that her most important message is that it is ok to have cd it is ok to be tested for cd the gf diet is ok and we don t need to be apologetic dr zeller said we should talk to society be alert go out to eat go to parties speak out educate that is our job not the doctors jim mccarthy spoke on the need for equality across canada re testing for cd costs being covered by the health care system genetic testing testing of relatives etc currently in ontario blood tests for cd are not covered by the health plan currently in ontario blood tests for cd are not covered by the health plan dr mohsin rashid dr mohsin rashid md m ed frcpc is a paediatric gastroenterologist and an associate professor of paediatrics at dalhousie university in halifax his focus is on education to improve awareness of cd in the medical community and the public he told us the prevalence of cd is 1 in 100 worldwide it is old and common and for cd to be atypical is typical to be diagnosed in canada usually takes 11.7 years but that seems to be improving with education and awareness he has written a book on cd the road to diagnosis he selected 16 members of the cca to tell their story each story cited a specific aspect of the disease 12 the book has been sent to 287 family doctors in their final year of training he concluded his lecture with a picture of a chameleon a lizard that is capable of changing colour to match its surroundings a fitting symbol for celiac disease dr farid mamud dr farid mahmud he is a specialist in paediatric endocrinology at the hospital for sick children in toronto in the 1960 s it was discovered there is an association between type one diabetes and cd one person in 20 with type one diabetes will also have cd the two diseases share some genetics for any doctor treating a patient with both diseases the control of his diabetes will be of the most importance treatment is difficult diabetes needs a diet insulin and exercise to be controlled cd also requires a strict diet the diagnosis of a second chronic disease will be more difficult for the patient to cope dr mahmud is currently doing a study evaluating the impact of people with a second chronic medical condition the purpose is to compare quality of life and how they are managing their diabetes with another chronic condition dr jocelyn silvester dr silvester spoke about a study conducted to determine the follow up care by canadian gastroenterologists 76 of surveys returned noted that the doctors did follow up care the recommendation is that long term care be provided annually using a team approach including the gi the primary care physician and dietitian dr connie switzer dr switzer provided us with an update on the caa professional advisory board some of the highlights advice to cca on pevena trademark reviewed research projects for the dr j.a campbell research awards consideration of new research initiatives jim mccarthy jim introduced new cca program for gf and pevena symbol licensing a process is underway to develop cca certification for gf food cca has registered two trademarks pavena which is used for products containing oats and gf which is
