department of scientific education and industrial research dsir a leading research organization in the solar field dtu is an institution which continues to define and update methods of engineering in india this step of establishing a solar power plant on the campus taken towards a sustainable future will add another feather to the university s cap w ith conventional power sources contributing to environmental pollution/degradation and dwindling at an extremely fast pace currently there is a great thrust on developing power from non-conventional and alternative sources of energy one of the most prominent forms of renewable energy sources is solar energy india is in the second band of solar irradiation levels across the world and thus has great potential of using this source delhi technological university apart from enhancing the technical competency of our nation by imparting quality education is also actively involved in cutting-edge research oriented projects dtu has now taken the initiative of promoting the use of renewable energy by proposing to establish a 100 kw solar power plant on campus this will take care of its lighting information technology and other miscellaneous power needs athematics and computing are strongly intertwined subjects and at a certain elementary level the words become more or less synonymous mathematics focusses on concepts and theoretical computations and scientific industrial applications require fast and real time computations with modern computers having the power of mathematics and computing many problems in biology business banking etc the solutions of which were impossible to find earlier can now be solved efficiently much of this improvement in efficiency is owed to the field of algorithms which at the theoretical level studies the inherent complexity of computational problems providing principles and techniques for designing more efficient algorithms bioinformatics which consists of the applications of statistics and computer science to the field of microbiology is a very important emerging area where one should have a good knowledge of mathematics and computing besides some essential knowledge of biology mathematical finance requires one to have a sound knowledge of mathematics and computing presently some institutions in india and abroad are imparting b.tech and m.tech degree programs in mathematics and computing considering the need of sophisticated mathematics for modern scientific investigations and technological developments dtu plans to offer a four year b.tech program in mathematics and computing from the academic session 2011-12 the aim of this program is to train students in fundamentals of mathematics and computer science with emphasis on computational techniques providing fusion of mathematics with computer science the students will be trained in such a way that graduates would be able to take up jobs in academia or industry or pursue higher studies looking on the present scenario we are confident that the graduates from this program will be welcomed by the following segments of industries · quantitative/computational/mathematical financeinvestment banks consulting firms etc · optimization and operations research management consultancy firms r&d industries · information technology software it development firms m a new b.tech designed for in the it candidates working in the it industry to impart industry knowledge in software technologies to impart knowledge in software technologies the program is weekend so that employees can take it up without disturbing their work schedule the duration of the course is three years although this program has been customized for employees of samsung india electronics ltd it is useful for any it industry employee most of the it companies have software projects which are centered at software development in order to successfully execute these projects employees should have a sound knowledge of techniques and tools of software engineering in addition the employees working in these companies come from different streams of engineering and sciences some of these employees have not gone through a formal course work in computers they have been given crash training programs to work on the project at hand also some of the employees coming from science courses have knowledge about software applications but have insufficient knowledge about software technology this program will integrate employees coming from different streams and impart advanced knowledge about computer
