headmaster s report extracurricular activities at pinkerton academy lifelong experiences one of my favorite things to do as headmaster and something i wish i had more time for is watching pinkerton students perform compete participate experience and achieve a recent national study of college-aged students who were involved in extracurricular activities in high school revealed that there was a strong correlation between involvement in supplemental activities and academic achievement additional studies show there are many other benefits of high school extramural participation on our campus i witness character building skill development improved time management resume building for college and enhanced social skills every day much of which blossoms after 2:10 p.m at pinkerton we provide a wide variety of non-academic opportunities for our students some are athletic some are not some such as music and theatre teach our students how to discipline themselves through drills practices or rehearsals by participating and persevering in any of these activities our students gain self-respect self-esteem and self-confidence by playing on a pinkerton astro team or participating in one of our many intramural programs students learn about cooperation and solidarity experts tell us that by a 2-to-l ratio boys who participate in sports do better in school do not drop out and have a better chance of getting through college last fall we honored the thousands of football players who played for good `ol pa for the past 100 years and simultaneously we celebrated a gridiron experience that helped build their character and confidence the ratio for girls who participate in sports and do well in school is 3 to 1 learning to be a team player is an essential life skill and many extracurricular activities from singing in a choir to playing soccer require working together as a team and relating to peers in a social way extracurricular activities in the arts teach students analytical and creative problem solving skills students have to think imaginatively to successfully perform music act in a play or produce a work of art if you had the opportunity to see the pinkerton players spring musical mame you witnessed not only an enthusiastic and talented cast and crew of performers but students who statistically are self-assured take above-average classes and receive above-average grades at the end of this month for the 9th time in the last 10 years the academy will send a team to participate in the world finals of the international creative problem solving compete with dozens of similar state and country champions and will showcase and exercise their skills in leadership project management and public presentation participating in extracurricular activities also enriches a teen s life experiences cultural enrichment and exchange programs play a key role in civilized society we have just had two groups of students return from exciting two-week learning experiences in beijing and costa rica in china our contingent formalized a sister school relationship with a high school in shanghai a group of students from our foreign language department had a unique immersion in a spanish culture these trips prove that education is not provided through textbooks and lectures alone at pinkerton we will continue to fund extracurricular activities because of the undeniable benefits they offer to our student body we will continue to encourage all of our students to participate because of the positive influence these events have on their lives activities at the academy are not solely about what the score is how many wins or losses we attained during a season or what place is won at a competition they provide and instruct students with lessons that will last them a lifetime as former students i challenge you to reinvigorate your own academy experiences and to return to campus to watch pinkerton students perform compete participate experience and achieve right along with me just check the pinkerton web page pinkertonacademy.net or the local newspapers for times and places page 3 -mary a anderson headmaster

dusk and i was thrilled they were obviously very hungry now i know it is not wise to feed wild animals but how could i resist down to the grain store i went and bought suitable food for deer the clerk told me i was not the only person feeding the deer this year i put out the food for them until the ice and snow were gone i managed to snap a clear picture of them through my window it took a whole roll of film to get one clear snapshot i realize that i might have fattened them up for someone s freezer but so be it just a word to you hunters out there all the land around this area is posted no we came back to derry in april 2001 put the house on the market and it sold in 5 days so now we live in our motor home full-time and have had no regrets we come back to derry for the summer as our sons gary 83 and greg 86 and families live in derry we have four wonderful grandchildren three boys and one girl who we really enjoy when we leave in the fall we head for the west we like the yuma arizona area and we meet up with friends from previous winters we have four solar panels on our roof so we can stay on blm land in the desert we love the freedom that this gives us we have met many great people who we keep in touch with by email our e-mail address is reedmos@pocketmail.com if anyone is interested in writing i d love to hear from classmates we keep in touch with janet and glenn peabody and thelma eaton furr i hope this letter prompts others to send news in for future issues of the alumnus my best wishes to all margaret thank you very much for the e-mail i do have a question
