message from the headmaster pinkerton receives full accreditation we recently received a full 10-year reaccreditation from the new england association of schools and colleges the renewed accreditation came with a lengthy report written by members of a highly credentialed visiting committee that spent three days at pinkerton in april we were commended by the committee in the report for our buildings and campus the campus is clean well-maintained and exhibits pride in every corner they added through the coordinated efforts between administration faculty health services student support services maintenance and the security team pinkerton academy has a safe and orderly learning environment the committee praised the energetic efforts of the students faculty and staff for establishing and promoting a culture of commitment to pinkerton academy and developing a caring and concerned environment throughout the school they also witnessed an extraordinary school pride exhibited by all levels of pinkerton employees in the professional way they approach their job responsibilities as well as the value students place on the richness of the pinkerton experience and the wealth of its opportunities and traditions the committee which traditionally makes a list of recommendations suggested we needed to work on among other things our strategic and technology plans and our faculty evaluation system they also suggested that we develop a focused sequenced implementation plan for the variety of curricular and pedagogical initiatives currently underway and the committee recommended that pinkerton continue to develop common course assessments and to provide faculty time to collaborate on these tasks as we look to the future pinkerton s trustees and administrators have an important role they will continue to evaluate the the pinkerton astros defeated the salem blue devils in november to capture another in a long line of state championship trophies receiving the plaque from the team were headmaster mary anderson and dean of students glenn ahrens school s programs and courses to improve student learning and to assess the effectiveness of the academy s programs because pinkerton is a family of diverse individuals we will strive to provide the appropriate facilities to educate each and every one of our learners while steadfastly preserving our long history of fiscal responsibility new building to address pinkerton s most pressing needs together the trustees and i have been closely monitoring a number of issues that have been impacting both pinkerton academy s current operations and our future plans i am very happy to report that the structure is currently on time and on budget for example at our recent meetings discussing next year s budget we have spent a great deal of time reviewing the local state and national economies the recently announced 2011-2012 budget of $34.9 million will be down $54,760 compared to this year s budget that includes the expenses of opening and operating our much-needed new building a declining student population is the main reason for the decrease since a reduced enrollment translates into a reduced staff we continue to strategize on the best way to ensure the stability of pinkerton while practicing financial prudence as many local residents have observed while driving by the campus construction on pinkerton academy s long-awaited building is coming right along completion is anticipated for july and the multi-purpose building will be ready for the first day of school in late august i am very happy to report that the structure is currently on time and on budget this new facility is designed to be both versatile and flexible the final plans represent a great deal of deliberation and thought this structure is an important part of the trustees long-range campus plan one of the biggest reasons for the need of a new facility is that our two sets of 40-year-old portable classrooms which have lasted many years longer than expected have become more of a liability than a benefit one of the major focuses of the new building will be a new concept for freshmen designed around using teams of teachers counselors and administrators to get to know and support groups of 120 to 125 students research including multiple visitations to schools utilizing this freshman programming revealed that the concept would help our students academically with the drop-out rates and the complex transition from middle school in addition we must update and expand the curriculum and equipment of the academy s career and technical education cte department several programs need more space or renovations to create classrooms with labs to be nationally certified three of these programs including the new culinary arts curriculum will find new homes in this building we are all aware of the financial turmoil that continues to make headlines in this country and around the world in the midst of this troubling economic news i want everyone associated with pinkerton to know that the academy has reacted responsibly and expeditiously to manage our expenses and to work on additional ways to conserve our resources mary anderson headmaster

11 2010 grace bibeault levandowski passed away following a long illness grace didn t attend our class reunions but i saw her on several occasions and she was as gracious as i always remembered i remember her the first day of school as a beautiful young lady from the sticks of londonderry she came into our classroom in the old building at pinkerton as a freshman and turned the heads of all the boys mine included right guys she soon became a leader in class activities gracious and willing to help in many ways grace went on to become an all-star athlete and excelled at everything she did during her four years at pinkerton she married john levandowski `42 and moved to manchester where she raised their six children grace and john were married for 64 years i last saw her at the wake of one of her sons and we did have a chance to talk but only briefly the class of 43 sends our condolences to all her family in late september i received a call from classmate bill stewart anxious to get caught up on news from our other classmates bill has been having health problem but says he is doing much better now he still has trouble getting around because of his knees and it keeps them from doing as much traveling they once did bill said he really misses the trips they took to derry in years past not being able to see the old town and visit with friends of bygone times i wasn t able to give him anything new about you guys because i haven t received anything i asked bill about his brother-in-law harry and how he was doing harry and his wife came to our 65th reunion with bill and his wife florence and after robin had given us a tour of the facilities he was really impressed with our school he remarked that long island doesn t have any schools that compare with pinkerton i told bill to show him the alumnus with a picture of the new freshman building we re working on so he can be even more envious of our great school go pa margaret manning morrison called asking how she could go about getting an absentee ballot to vote at the general election i was able to get her the information and it made me feel really important it doesn t take much for some guys to get a swelled head my ramblings veterans day november 11 on facebook i posted the following today i wore my wwii veterans cap with the service ribbons i earned in plain sight i was awarded so much more as the day went on with the many thank you for your service patriotism is very much alive these days as it hasn t been for many years we re going to get our great country back one nation under god with liberty and justice for all god bless america and god bless our troops my wife and i attended the veterans day breakfast at pinkerton which the sophomore class held for all veterans they performed a nice program and it was a real tribute from the young generation to the veterans it really gives us a great feeling of satisfaction to know that these young people are going to be the leaders of this nation in future years why can t we see more of this from the news media instead of the trash they print or send out on tv and radio this said unless i start getting some new from you classmates i m going to keep procrastinating and rambling on so get off your duff and send me something to add there has been a important change noted in the last alumnus the 2011 florida reunion will be held sunday february the reunion committee met again following our class reunion we talked about and decided to hold our next reunion sooner than the usual five years the consensus was that five years is too long a time now and so it seemed wise to schedule the next one in two years we will see how well that works marion caldwell was kind enough to have us back at her home for the meeting claire ball nathalie latulippe gladys richardson sam low myself and of course marion were present for the first time bill gratton was unable to make it on the subject of bill his name was somehow missing from the picture of our class reunion which appeared in the last alumnus sorry bill it was unintentional one of the items on display at the class reunion was an album of photos from our 50th reunion with notations and identifications of classmates and attendees which harry richardson compiled hank spaulding was very impressed with it and asked if it would be possible to have a copy made for him marion caldwell who seems to know about so many of these things went to the ups store and was able to have one duplicated for hank i mailed it out and was very pleased to receive a nice note from hank thanking us for the album he wrote and i quote which shows a few 45ers like cap johnson i gave the eulogy at this funeral i very much enjoyed our 65th reunion and the opportunity to see our classmates who attended pinkerton gave us all a great start in life and i have only great memories of living in derry i hope we all have the exceptional good luck to attend our 70th these last sentiments we all share with him happy to say that barbara trombley has returned to spend the winter here in new hampshire she will be staying with her daughter joan in canterbury with occasional visits to other family here in derry or nearby her great-granddaughter is ill and she wants to be close-by to spend time with her she arrived here after thanksgiving and the next week claire ball barb and i went to gilford to visit with lucille gallien an old friend and widow of norman dempsey gallien long time residents of derry we spent a very pleasant afternoon with lu and surprisingly met another former derry-ite patricia perry 43 who lives in the same complex her brother is bob perry whom she said is doing well bob attended pinkerton before enlisting in the service in world war ii pat looks wonderful we spoke briefly about some of her classmates whom i remember well and she asked about my late husband john who was in the class of 1943 before he enlisted in the army an unexpected encounter pauline cassidy hamer and i recently had breakfast together at pauline s lovely home we have agreed to meet together at each other s home every month or so we have renewed an old friendship which dates back to our senior year in pa after pauline returned to derry from arizona where her family had moved her lovely daughter lynn and her son larry visit frequently in fact i ran into paulie and lynn at hannafords last week lynn takes her shopping each week when she comes to spend the day with pauline some of our classmates have had some unfortunate traumas recently gloria tyke gallien floyd had the misfortune to trip and fall while playing whist at the senior center in west side school she fractured her hip and femur and has been in rehabilitation for the past several weeks it seems that she will be there a bit longer i spoke with her daughter annette joyce and learned that tyke is making good progress in rehab in winter 2011 www.pinkertonacademy.net fact her accident has had unexpected results her pt has increased her strength and to her delight she is proud of her biceps and more surprisingly now has slightly improved vision tyke has macular degeneration and is legally blind annette said her mom has lost weight and looks better than she has in years annette expects her mom will be home by christmas i was happy to speak with annette whom i am told by everyone is absolutely wonderful to her mother on august 21 a few weeks after our reunion we were surprised to hear that cecile filteau gregoire had been in an auto accident.thederrynews reported that she had driven her buick into a column support adjacent to papa gino`s restaurant although it heavily damaged the steel support cecile was fortunate to have only suffered bruises to her leg she was taken to parkland medical center and released after it was determined she was not badly injured i spoke with cecile today and she said she has totally recovered the damage to her car was too severe for repair so she purchased a chevy malibu to replace it cecile is happily living in a condo at the bottom of east derry road she likes the quiet and the proximity to stores and businesses in derry she remains active and plays whist each wednesday at the senior center with gloria floyd and barbara moynihan when barb is here during the summer i recently received a very nice note from bertha hall bourque s daughter paula thanking me for what i had written about her mother in the last alumnus she wrote that she and her family appreciated the many things i had recalled about bertha she also said her dad is doing well and is being well cared for by the whole family her thank you note was much appreciated gladys richardson is now a proud great-grandmother her first this is the grandchild of her daughter patty and husband ray gibson who live in florida gladys has not yet seen this little guy cooper david gibson but has seen numerous pictures of him on facebook and she says he is beautiful while she has become a great-grandmother later most of us it does not in the least diminish the pleasure congratulations gladys on a sadder note john gilcreast sr husband of shirley watts gilcreast died on october 13 in the merrimack valley hospice house in haverhill he was 86 john had lived in londonderry for many years before moving to sandown for the past three years he and shirley lived in derry like so many of his generation he reunions but were not able to come to our last class reunion because of his illness at this sad time i m sure that shirley finds great comfort in her son and two daughters 10 grandchildren and nine my eldest son jeff and his wife rita live it will be a bittersweet move for me as i have been very happy in this park and lucille kay and i had lots of fun hosting red sox and patriot victory parties dinners with our friends and sunny days at the local beaches i will be starting on a new voyage now making new friends and spending more time with old ones that i only visited occasionally because of the miles between us some of my buddies in the sarasota/bradenton area are the ones that i worked with for 25 years or more at shaw s and the five of us get together once a year for a pajama party at pat fling henderson s beautiful home in northport each year i just spent last saturday night there with pat when she hosted her annual christmas open house and helped her light over 200 flicker lights and turn a zillion animated figures all over the house santa reposed in her bathtub wearing nothing but a smile and a santa hat as he sat amidst a waist-high splash of clear balloons blown up to mimic bubbles in his bath what a hoot and 163 of her park friends came by that evening and left full of good food and good cheer classmates i have put off writing this article because it is one of the saddest things i will ever have to write about the passing of my very dearest friend lucille noddin bailey lucille lost her battle with cancer on september 12 at her derry home surrounded by her loving family she is always in my thoughts and in my heart as she taught me so many things throughout the years patience forgiveness and how to cope with life by myself once when we were sewing two piece bathing suits for ourselves in our slimmer days she made me rip out the whole top and start over again because she knew that i would never fix it over to look good and she was right we captained a 4-h group of girls together took many short trips to the east coast of fl to see plays and egyptian collections with her two sisters sandra and charlotte when les died she flew back to nh and she and her daughters put on a wonderful lunch for our friends and family she was my friend my mentor and my sounding board and i feel so lucky to have had the gift of her friendship for all these years after a long illness on october 13 and david wilson passed away october 21 after a year-long battle with cancer our thoughts and prayers are with the families of joe and david bob klein had this to say about joe joe lavacchia passed away october 13 at the nursing home in sun city fl where he had lived before developing diabetes joe plaza and i had visited joe shortly before his passing connie sutton bell had talked with joe on the phone his passion was sports and reading one of my memories of joe was in ninth grade at hood it was noontime recreation basketball with joe as coach and referee i could shoot free throws but was a lousy dribbler and ball handler finally joe put me in i get the ball and fumble around the opponents besiege me and joe calls a foul sweet i step up to the line and sink two free throws and then back to the bench self esteem intact with that in mind i have to believe joe was a great coach at fitchburg state for many years joe had a great friend and advocate in janet doherty also from sun city who visited him almost every day thank you bob glenn peabody had this to say about david i have known dave wilson since i was five years old we lived in derry one block apart near oak street school we both started first grade at oak street school at six years of age and our friendship grew stronger with the years we both enjoyed mechanical projects and building them ourselves as time went on dave was fascinated with trucks and looked forward to the day he could drive and own one he did just that for most of his life even though
