headmaster s message podcast series added to website it s hard to believe that another school year is coming to a close at pinkerton as alumni i m sure you feel the same way when you recall your time here i d like to thank you for your continued interest and dedication to your alma mater and want you to know that you are an important link to pinkerton s outstanding reputation as one of the best high schools in nh in an effort to reach out to alumni and friends i ve decided to step a bit further into technology and began posting the first in a series of podcasts on our website along with this publication and facebook the recordings are just one of many places you can go to learn about what is happening at pinkerton we will be uploading additional podcasts when issues or situations warrant rather than on a set schedule we also welcome your comments and questions please send them to podcast@pinkertonacademy.org i usually dedicate this spring column to our upcoming graduation ceremonies however given recent issues with budgets and layoffs i feel it is more timely to discuss recent decisions that have been made and why as you may know i recently announced a reduction of the faculty and staff for the next school year why was this necessary the foremost reason is a declining enrollment for the first time in over 50 years for example the enrollment from the 2009/10 school year to the projected enrollment in 2011/12 a period of three years will show a decrease of about 250 students at the end of this school year reductions have included seven full-time faculty positions with an additional nine faculty and staff receiving abbreviated schedules the trustees have already responded to this trend by adding auburn as our fourth contract town however the addition of auburn will not alter pinkerton s decreasing enrollment until 2013 when their students will begin at pinkerton a reduction in force was needed now decisions on which individuals were let go were based on a wide range of factors including student subject interest based on their course selections for next year teaching credentials and qualifications state requirements performance and more teachers retiring this year helped keep the layoffs at a minimum it is heart wrenching to lose even one member of the pinkerton family but under these circumstances we had no choice it had to be done one question i have heard in reaction to the reduction in staff is why is pinkerton building a large new building when they are cutting faculty and staff there are so many factors that have made the new building a need-to-have rather than a nice-to-have we have over 40 portable classrooms that are used every day some have been here for over 40 years their time has come and gone replacing them was no longer an option we have to consider the educational requirements and opportunities necessary for education today those facilities and resources are beyond four walls and a chalkboard in order to create a more personalized education a different kind of physical plant was needed and that is what is found in the new building additionally our current classrooms were scheduled 95 of the time some may think that this is great use of classrooms however it makes the scheduling process almost impossible classes are scheduled during lunch periods as that is the only time that rooms are available this is an inefficient use of resources the added space in the new building will prove for more effective scheduling lastly the new building will allow a reorganization of our current career and technical education programs which will be more attuned to current employment trends to meet this need we are adding a new culinary arts program the facilities of other programs are also being improved while programs with low enrollments are being phased out the decision-making around the new building began over 10 years ago long before the recession the design of the building was formalized by a committee mandated by our contracts with the sending towns and included pinkerton sending schools and educational representatives construction was originally timed to begin as other campus buildings were paid off ground-breaking for the new building was temporarily postponed at the height of the recession until the trustees decided to take advantage of major dips in construction and financing costs -saving the school and local taxpayers millions we will be creating more podcasts soon during which i will talk about my philosophy as headmaster and my vision for the future if you d like to be on an e-mail blast for notification when we post another podcast send your e-mail address to podcast@pinkertonacademy.org along with any questions or thoughts you have in response to this podcast thank you for your time interest passion and most importantly your support for pinkerton academy whether it is your high school your alma mater your employer or all of the above pinkerton appreciates your interest mary a anderson headmaster

an astounding life story does not fully describe it i was most impressed by the fact that most of us here probably did not know how very successful hank has been it is characteristic of hank s modesty that this was so for myself one of the things i enjoyed was the story of his early life here in derry and the pictures of his dad and mother and the family drug store which we all remember so well there are some great pictures of the basketball teams in junior high school and pinkerton academy coached by neil sullivan and gordon mckernan his life-long friendship with robert cappy johnson began when cappy moved here from skowhegan me in the seventh grade the pictures showing them hitchhiking and canoeing together in high school are just as i remember them at the time there is a great story about the two buddies plotting their marriage proposal to their respective girlfriends and then planning their weddings two weeks apart so that each one could stand up for the other after graduating from pinkerton hank entered the navy on his discharge he went to phillips exeter to prepare for admittance to mit he entered mit in 1947 graduating in 1951 with his bs degree in civil engineering and the rest is history his first job was with parsons after which he joined cabot cabot and forbes at the end of 12 years with cc&f during which time he was appointed executive vice president of operations he decided to start his own business with his brother dick and george slye he formed the spaulding and slye corporation which became extremely successful their projects included the hampshire plaza in manchester and others in burlington boston washington and charlotte in 1979 he had done well enough to sell the firm to his employees deciding to move onto something new in 1983 he contacted mit with the idea of establishing a real estate master s program while it required seven mit approvals it eventually came to pass and is now a very successful program i suspect hank considers this one of his greater accomplishments along with his good fortune in having met and married ann in recent years he and ann have founded a senior center in the building which has housed ann s antique and gift shop its goal is to provide many activities and programs that include health fitness elder lecture services nutrition and aid to the house-bound without copying the whole book it is clear that hank has achieved enormous success has made many prestigious friends and is highly regarded by those who know him it is obvious from the letters that are included in the book how much everyone respects likes and admires him since his retirement he has enjoyed tennis boating photography and extensive traveling with his wife and family he still enjoys music playing the piano and sing-a-longs with friends not surprisingly he has passed on his musical talents to his son rob who is an accomplished jazz pianist and piano teacher what is very clear is that he enjoys being with his wife ann and spending time with his family and friends although he has achieved a great deal more importantly hank has never forgotten old friends associates and acquaintances his generosity to many institutions and causes is acknowledged in the letters of gratitude he has received his book while primarily intended for his family is an incredible testament to a remarkable person it is good news that barbara trombley has decided to return here to live she has found an apartment which is close to downtown derry and is looking forward to renewing friendships and being close to her family here in derry and nh i 6 alumnus spring 2011 find us on facebook have also spoken with gloria tyke floyd and learned that she is still recovering from her accident however she continues to play bingo and also whist at the senior center of wednesdays tyke said that cecile filteau has not been present on wednesdays for the whist games as had been her usual practice i called cecile who told me that she has been ill and was recently hospitalized in the parkland medical center for five days she is doing better and has just been able to begin driving again i was also pleased to hear that frances marquis is improved she has been doing more reading and activities at the nursing home which is encouraging she told me that she is looking forward to spending easter with her daughters and their children and grandchildren her brother chuck johns `46 visits regularly while speaking with marion guilbert recently she told me that she had an unfortunate accident four weeks ago she fell at home and sustained a crack fracture of her arm and had been wearing a sling which meant that she was unable to drive her car or do the usual things we all do such as grocery shopping etc the day that i called she had been able to drive for the first time she said that she also had been very bruised black and blue and looked like a raccoon for a few days following her fall but is feeling fine now it seems that each issue of the alumnus contains the news of another death of a classmate the news that dorothy longdin king had died on december 17 arrived too late to be included in my last column although anne parker was able to add the notice dottie lived in medford ma before moving here as a teenager after graduating from pinkerton she attended hesser business college in manchester then moved to manchester in 1957 she was an accomplished seamstress who specialized in creating bridal gowns in 1988 she retired from jordan marsh co after 25 years of service she is serviced by her husband of 60 years wallace king and her two daughters patti and deborah three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter she was predeceased by her son scott in 1982 she and wally always came for our reunions and mini-reunions in fact they attended our 65th reunion dottie and gladys richardson remained close friends throughout the years gladys suffered another great loss with the death of her dear son david he died at home on january 11 2011 at the age of 55 a graduate of pinkerton in 197 he later attended the university of nh he was an interior house painter for many years and more recently worked as a school custodian he had a great interest in the history of native americans of nh and embraced the spirituality of their beliefs and customs he collected artifacts of early american life in new england he enjoyed mountain trail hiking and camping besides his mother he is survived by four sisters nancy patricia barbara and suzan eight nieces and nephews and one great-nephew as well as many aunts uncles and cousins our very sincere sympathy to gladys wally and their families i have also learned that joel scroggins has died unfortunately i have no more information than that he had lived in greenfield ma for many years and after an absence of many years had come to our 60th class reunion i am also sorry to add that my own dear and long-time friend of 50 plus years margaret deredon died on march 28 she will be well known to many of you who knew her during the many years she was an executive at derry bank and trust from the time i became acquainted with margaret she her my husband and i attended the memorial services at the east derry church and the church was filled with her many friends from church and the community i was able to talk with warren after the service and offered the condolences from the class toward the end of january robert kelley and wife jean hooked their five wheeler to the truck and were on their way to the sunny south for a while jean had surgery in early january so they weren t sure if they were going to be able to make the trip when jean began feeling better they decided it was a go bob took it slow and easy and they safely arrived in floridanot too beat up from the trip bob called to tell me they had arrived safely and were looking forward to a good rest while they were there they traveled around for a while and then settled in ft meyers i m sure jean will recuperate much faster now that she is out of the extremely cold weather and snow we ve been blessed with this winter bob has always been good about calling me to fill me in on jean s condition and to inquire about my health also he says their looking forward to one of our mini reunions when they get back to derry at the end of february richard buckley 48 and wife rosalie left for their yearly trip to arizona they had decided this year to stay home but as the winter set in plans changed because it was so late in the season they couldn t get their regular place or time all that was available for them was the month of march so they settled on that and will be home for the nice weather of april richard likes to tell a story of an incident that happened when he was driving the buckley egg express trucks years ago on a cold snowy night as he was driving home from up north on 9 he noticed something on the side of the road ahead as he approached he saw the back end of a vehicle sticking out of a huge snow bank almost completely covered with snow it was late at night and the traffic was very light so being the good samaritan he stopped to see if he could help he hooked a chain to the back axel of the car and dragged it out onto the highway it was then he noticed the occupant was a priest who appeared to be near frozen they were able to scrape all the snow from the car and richard noticed it had an arizona registration plate he asked the priest what part of arizona he was from he answered that his parish was in phoenix and that he was very anxious to get back to the warm weather richard then said that his wife rosalie was from phoenix he met her when he was in the navy in wwii stationed in arizona he told the priest how they were married and came back to new hampshire the priest shook his head and asked if she was still here to which richard replied yes-and with a nice family the priest then extended his hand saying son she must really love you to have stayed in this part of the country all these years thus the story for their yearly pilgrimage to arizona on friday april 15 a group of classmates held another mini class reunion at the derry restaurant and pizza the derry pizza was walter robertson s choice could he have a little thing going with the waitress there those in attendance were warren pillsbury walt robertson marge piper keith paulina hall backman richard and doris rand dick and ginny nelson joanne butterfield aiken ginny beckley taintor robert and jean kelly who had just returned from florida last week and roland and lorraine marquis routhier we had a fun-filled time reminiscing about old times and getting caught up on new happenings one issue that was discussed was who s the youngest person in the class of 48 it was finally determined walter robertson was walter then 10 alumnus spring 2011 find us on facebook explained my mother put up with me at home as long as she could and when i reached age four she lied about my age and sent me off to school to keep her sanity we lived in massachusetts then and so it wasn t a problem i m not sure if that story is true knowing walt but he really is the youngest one in the class if any of our classmates living out of town plan on being in derry for a visit please give me a call or e-mail me telling me when you ll be here i m sure we can contact some of the classmates for another get-together on short notice this way you would get to visit with some of your old friends from the class of `48 it s always fun getting caught up on news of everyone s life well that s it for this issue but i m hoping to get more news from you classmates who seem to have dropped off the face of this planet maybe you can send me something from whatever planet you re on now have a great summer and stay well lorraine virginia verge nelson 17 everett st derry nh 03038 60 42-2220 nelsonv1000@aol.com keep hoping to hear from some of our classmates but i think they have all gone to outer mongolia i did receive a christmas letter from carlene caldwell sanborn and she missed the alumnusdeadline by only a week so carlene you are getting better they have sold their property and are living with their third daughter martha her new address is 7413 rooses way indianapolis in 46217 her husband bruce has neuropathy in his hands legs and feet and cannot drive anymore hence the move to their daughter s home the class would like to extend condolences to dolores pelletier exline and her family on the loss of her husband richard who passed away in march he was a soldier in the us army 7th engineers combat battalion and landed in normandy on d-day there were not too many of our guys who made it back to the u.s what upsets me now are those children who do not even know what d-day was i had a call from joan castricone fontaine the other day wow somebody called me and asked if any of us would be interested in having a girls that s us lunch someday when the weather warms up-if it ever does i told her i d put it in my column and if anyone is interested give me a call and we can decide on a place that would be convenient for everyone have a happy summer ginny charles reynolds po box 1851 palmer ak 99645-1851 907-745-20 hawkhill@matnet.com a final happy hello to each of you very special classmates and friends of 60 years didn t do my work as well as dominica cousins did for us however in the past 15 years i ve attempted to talk and reconnect with each of you which seems to be impossible because we have too much wrong information on file luckily some of us got to visit often thanks for those fun chats and fresher memories as well as for your calls cards or letters as we all slip and slide into our eighties or back into the good earth my wish for all of us is that we can do so without being either angry or grouchy 49 50

the effort most as 00 kids a day come in on buses and they all want candy ice may not write but we all read and following class members is i cream hot dogs and pizza but i love working with the kids believe meaningful for all especially after spending winters in adult-only parks in fl i janice rand tucker wrote having just received the winfeel it helps keep me young and the paperwork and cashiering ter issue of the pinkerton alumnus with no entries in our 1952 keeps the cobwebs out of my brain class notes i decided it was time to do my part to help fill the now for the not-so-good news nancy gallien small lost space when each issue comes i eagerly look to see what my her husband don small `46 in february don died unexpect classmates are doing and appreciate those who have taken reedly after having routine surgery and we were all shocked and sponsibility for keeping us in touch through the years until my saddened by news when she called also virginia pillsbury mother gertrude brarian until retiring to tyler tx in 1995 our three children cathy elisa and tom were born when we lived in granby now adults with g s graduate degrees in anthropology social work and neuroscience each with a stimulating career since we don t live close to one another the christmas holidays are the one time we usually get together in tyler but in 2009 an extra celebration with a family reunion at old orchard beach me to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary all 11 of us including spouses and three grandkids a bonus seeing my sister laurel rand browne `53 who lives close-by in lyman tom and i have had some wonderful trips and vacations but are now trimming back with some health issues a highlight for me in 2010 was publishing a book thesunstillshines, livingwithchronicillness based on over 0 years of research and journal keeping while living with scleroderma the project gave me great satisfaction as i collected stories from friends who wrestle with chronic illness and sought inspiration from philosophers spiritual leaders and health care professionals writing was both therapy and distraction for me as i recovered at home for a year after laserscopic spinal surgery which left me with a numb leg below the knee and a dropped foot improvement is slow but i am better and better every day you can read reviews of the book on bn.com and i have copies which i am happy to inscribe i wish you all well and would love to hear from any of you at janicerand tucker@gmail.com again hope you enjoyed these letters and their interesting lives would love to hear from all of you on that note we are wishing you a great summer season carol, nancyandellie 53 carol gallahue morrison 21 jefferson st derry nh 03038 60 42-5895 rmorri@comcast.net to all of you people that headed for warmer weather this past winter we envy you us foolish die-hard new hampshire natives who decided to weather the storm for another winter might change our minds next year snow blowing and shoveling is beginning to leave my vocabulary after saying all of this wise wisdom welcome back and enjoy the best of the four seasons again we again enjoyed a visit from andy mack in january just a few days before he was departing for hawaii andy looks great and it s always interesting talking to him about his travels hope to see you again this fall andy another classmate which i have enjoyed sharing e-mails with this year is powell allen it seems that powell has taken up cross-country skiing and from unknown sources i have heard that it can be a fairly dangerous sport hope the sore muscles and black and blues have gone away sounds like a report from the crow huh a note to share from sylvia horsfall gibson dear bob and carol this is a little bit of news that i found interesting my grandson was chosen to play in the `all eastern band the concert was yesterday much to my surprise two students were there from pinkerton emily higgins played the french horn and david geroski played the tuba needless to say i didn t talk to either just thought it was interesting 12 alumnus spring 2011 find us on facebook another bit of news received from janet putnam caron told of her lunch out with patricia gallien tingley and barbara willey nye barbara was leaving for her winter home in myrtle beach sc and wanted to get together barb keeps busy quilting and going to the gym she looks really good we met at the back room restaurant in manchester nh and the place was filled to capacity we reminisced about our days at pa trying to remember classmates and funny stories from our past i had forgotten that teda came from a family of 11 wow a lot of stories there teda keeps busy with bingo and she runs the senior center whist parties teda walks almost every day as i do for exercise when our waitress asked about dessert ice cream came to mind barbara said she only eats ice cream in the summer teda and i eat ice cream 365 days a year this means we are doing our part in making the northeast the highest consumption of ice cream per capita in the us upon leaving we told barbara that she was going to have a better winter than us that was an understatement after the winter that we had this past year teda an excellent driver then took me through every back and side road to get to a road that was familiar to me she is a virtual gps what a girl thanks janet for all of that news and it s a pleasure to see classmates still getting together and having a good time stories like that prove that we were a close knit group the worse part of being class correspondent is when i have to deliver sad news to everyone classmate raymond red dolloff jr passed away may 1 2011 at his home in chester nh red really lived his life to serve the town of chester and its residents and he did that to the utmost our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife barbara sullivan dolloff also of chester we will miss the fond memories of red in our days at pinkerton academy pinkerton academy is always changing and with its latest additions of buildings to the campus it is hard to visualize what the future brings so if you come back to derry to visit check out the campus and give us a call best of
