july 2011 issue 15 page 3 letter from the editor greetings from washington state we are still washing the campfire smell out of our clothes but the friends we made and the times we shared at the 2011 summer family reunion will be kept in our hearts forever if you missed the event you can read all about it in the rally wrap up on page 10 or you can see the video montage at http youtu.be/evz0dobr3xg now its time to focus on relaxing in the summer sun if we can find it its definitely not on the pacific coast right now i feel like i`m going to be growing moss soon with all the drizzly weather but as i sit here in long pants and a jacket i realize there are many of you around the country taxing your air conditioners to the brink and resetting the circuit breaker at regular intervals this summer we are settling down a bit and taking a much slower pace when i look back at the last year i see how much we have done and i`m ready for a bit of a break we`ll do our best to blend in with the locals and take part in all the community activities scheduled for the coast i was fortunate to get a library card and i signed the kids up for the summer reading program if the timing works we`ll enroll them in one or two vacation bible camps while i am a gypsy at heart i`m enjoying going to the same grocery store and being in one spot long enough to get multiple postal deliveries i take great comfort in knowing just which dryers in the laundromat actually dry the clothes and which ones will leave you with a sopping wet mess and no extra quarters to spare these are things that you miss when you are constantly moving from place to place when you have to re-learn the landscape a week at a time clementine baksteen kimberly travaglino stephanie mulac at the 2011 ftf summer family reunion as funny as it may sound its also great to take an awesome break when you`ve experienced some of the country`s most amazing locales a bit of downtime helps you to keep your perspective and appreciation for the glory of this land we call home all that being said we`ll probably pack up before the weekend and head out to destination unknown just because we can hope to see you down the road kimberly let us put sunglasses on your rv custom fit made at your rv site daytime privacy enjoy the view without being the view black for best unobstructed view blocks up to 98 of uv rays 10-year warranty todd and renee seeley distributors · fulltime families member #81 713 208-5569 · info@rvsunshadecompany.com www.rvsunshadecompany.com

july 2011 issue 15 page 4 close to the counters surviving cooking in a 20 sq ft rv kitchen by pam daley what kind of food comes to mind when you think of alaska moose meat hamburgers fresh salmon baked alaska how about 129 lb cabbages 64 lb cantaloupes or maybe 18 pound carrots that`s what you harvest when your garden gets 22 hours of sunshine each day during the blazingly short summers here according to the vendors here in fairbanks i`ll start seeing those at the local farmers markets come august although we are already seeing strawberries the size of my 3 year old grandson`s little fist what is available in every grocery store and restaurant up here right now is moose meat and reindeer meat in my research i found that moose is considered one of the healthiest red meats out there all living things including moose contain some contaminants but they are still extremely healthy and nutritious since moose are plant eaters they are low on the food chain since moose do not eat other animals this helps them avoid building up elevated levels of contaminants pulling hairs out of a moose nose um no

page 5 venison it s what s for dinner easy crockpot barbecued venison 2-3 lb venison roast cubed 2 large onions sliced in rings 1 or 2 18-oz bottles barbecue sauce depends on how much you love bbq sauce put a layer of meat and a layer of onion rings in crockpot drizzle generously with barbecue sauce repeat layers until meat and onion rings are used up or your crockpot is full cover cook on low 8-10 hours enjoy with a potato or rice side dish and vegetable venison goulash 1 lb ground venison 1 jar pasta sauce 16 oz pkg pasta elbows bows shells whatever you have in the pantry works brown the ground venison over medium heat then mix in the sauce and let simmer while the meat mixture is simmering boil the noodles until done to your preference mix together and serve with a big green salad pictures courtesy of taste of home books 2005 reiman media group inc

page 10 want to see a video of the event click here to check it out http youtu.be evz0dobr3xg 2011 summer family reunion r al ly w rap u p the astoria koa is in our rear view mirror but the good times we shared with other traveling families are still fresh in our minds and hearts the 2011 summer family reunion was a fabulously fun time lots of laughing learning story telling hooping bouncing and so many campfires i can`t wash the smell out of my clothes while the rally officially kicked off on thursday night a few families arrived early to warm up the folding chairs and stoke the fire when more families arrived on thursday night we had a s`mores campfire followed by a viewing of the goonies the astoria chamber of commerce where the goonies was filmed generously donated goonies gift packs which were awarded after the movie during a goonies trivia contest all the upgrades and changes each owner makes to make them more livable the koa`s jumping pillow was the key attraction and kids bounced on it for hours some moms bounced too want to join in the fun come to the fall family reunion in tombstone az oct 28th nov 1st 2011 click here for more info http fulltimefamilies.com family-reunions/tombstoneaz friday afternoon after swearing in our newest goonies we went on a hunt through the entire campground for one eye`d willie`s rich stuff the kids tore thru the clues which led them to a treasure chest brimming with candy if i hadn`t been for greg mulac and his trusty golf cart i would on friday morning we trounced through everyone`s homes to see what all the different rigs look like it always amazes me that even though we all use our rvs for the same purpose they are each so unique as is never have been able to keep the pace there was just enough time to start the minute to win it games the victors clementine and stephanie successfully transferred m&ms from one end of the www.fulltimefamilies.com

july 2011 issue 15 page 11 table to the other with the power of their own suction pretty impressive ladies on sunday we started with a pancake breakfast and then some dads headed to the fort george brewery for a tour and bbq lunch while other families headed for astoria`s sunday market we said some sad goodbyes to some families who packed up and headed home while in true full time style others extended their reservations and kept the party going and the campfire roaring the kids played for hours on the inflatables as the adults relaxed in front of the fire on friday evening there was a 100 kid organized talent show acts ranged from singing and dancing to a tae kwon do demonstration our own morgan mulac shined while performing dynamite way to go morgan then we held a family trivia contest and saw just how well rounded nomadic families are the seeley`s took 1 st place and won the campink lounge chair while the pantekoek family won a $25 mo`s restaurant gift certificate and the mulacs won a family pack of tickets to seaside family fun park the rain on saturday morning provided a bit of a rest and some families took the opportunity to tour the local attractions such as the maritime museum and lewis and clark national park there was still plenty to do in the afternoon when the koa hosted tie dying build a bear and an ice cream social to wash down the ice cream we invaded the internet café and had a birthday bash to sing happy birthday to all our family members with summer birthdays balloons were flying frosting was smeared and we took advantage of the sugar high to get a great group picture then it was back to the nightly campfire and time for the kids to make some fathers day cards and play legos the families we met and the times stories and laughter we shared with them are gifts we will treasure for many miles to come we love hosting the family reunions and can`t wait to do it again in october see you in tombstone!

page 15 our national parks the national mall and memorial parks washington dc by margie lundy the national mall http www.nps.gov/nama encompasses many things for the usa from celebrating our history to learning about our government to planning our future we spent two weeks exploring washington dc and still didn t see everything we re definitely going back again the mall is set up well and almost everything is free except for parking plan to pay and walk or take the metro the national mall and memorial parks actually include constitution gardens franklin delano roosevelt memorial george mason memorial john ericsson memorial korean war veterans memorial lincoln memorial national mall old post office tower pennsylvania avenue national historic site thomas jefferson memorial vietnam veterans memorial washington monument and world war ii memorial besides signage maps brochures tours and rangers full of great information there are junior ranger programs at many of these including constitution gardens old post office tower and all of the memorials the main junior ranger books for the mall are available at the ranger station behind the washington monument there are others close by as well including baltimore-washington parkway ford s theater george washington memorial parkway and the white house visitor center other great stops around the mall include the capitol building via the new underground visitor center the white house any of the nineteen museums that make up the smithsonian http www.si.edu us bureau of engraving and printing a favorite for our family arlington national cemetery and the us holocaust memorial museum for older children there are so many things to do in and around the national mall plan to spend at least five days and be prepared to walk pick up a map of the city at one of the smithsonian museums on the mall to help plan your route for a great campground option greenbelt park http www.nps.gov/gree is a short drive to the city has peaceful wooded sites and costs only $8 a night with your america the beautiful access pass 16 otherwise there are no hookups but are restrooms showers and a dump/water station so plan ahead for this beautiful primitive campground there are many hiking trails and it even has its own junior ranger program see more of our pictures of and around the national mall here http www.lundy5.com/search/label/dc by lizzy age 11 in washington dc i loved all the history and there was so much to look at there was also a lot of walking my favorite thing we did was a private tour of the capitol building on the opposite side of the national mall is the lincoln memorial which is in a lot of movies the junior ranger is a little hard but it s for all of washington dc up in the washington monument i could see for miles dc is the coolest city that i ve been to and a great family vacation by josh age 11 dc was very cool and the smithsonian air and space museum was the best it was also fun going up in the washington monument there was no water in the reflection pool because it was under construction so that was sad but we had a good time in dc margie lundy has been traveling the usa fulltime with her husband and three children for over a year follow their family adventures rving roadschooling scrapbooking and more at http www.lundy5.com and http www.scrapthemap.com matt josh and lizzy lundy www.fulltimefamilies.com
