airwaves email man@airage.com mail airwaves air age media 88 danbury road wilton ct 06897 usa gp waco view of the new great planes waco ymf-5 biplane in your july 2011 issue i instantly fell in love with this gorgeous multi-wing classic as soon as i saw the first ad for it many years ago i had built a .60-size waco ymf from the old pica kit and i always wanted to build a bigger one great planes 72-inch version seems to be just the right size for my favorite gas engine the zenoah g-26 do you think it would be a good fit george mathew email the g-26 is a very good choice as a powerplant for the new waco biplane several years ago i reviewed a similar-size waco and the combination was just great spinning a moki 18x6 prop the g-26 with a pitts-style slimline muffler provided plenty of climb power and i flew it most of the time between half and three-quarter power the only downside to the engine is its size and the location of the under-slung muffler made it necessary to remove some of the firewall s bottom edge and i had to relocate some of the attachment brackets for the engine cowl i would suspect that you d have to do the same with the waco from great planes good luck with your project gy u kudos to michael york for his great re hard rc pilot i did also enjoy all the fun and excitement generated by the car guys i also love flying giant-scale warbirds so seeing that you awarded plane of the year to the top flite gold edition p-40 giant-scale arf brought a smile to my face i had been contemplating dropping some plastic on this plane but now there s no question i don t remember seeing a flight report for the p-40 what issue did you review it in josé rodríguez long beach ca josé thanks for writing and also thank you for attending rcx yes after sorting through many of the past year s review airplanes we came to the conclusion that top flite did everything right with its giantscale p-40 warhawk the p-40 is a quality product and everything fits the bill for a plane of the year winner when it came to flight performance it won hands down for great all-around handling and performance our longtime contributor aaron ham reviewed the beautiful warhawk in the april 2011 issue how could you miss it it was also on our cover gy the only downside to the engine is its size and the location of the under-slung muffler made it necessary to remove some of the firewall s bottom edge u i was surprised to see your announcements for the products of the year awards in your rcx coverage my son and i attended rcx this year in pomona ca and we had a great time though i am a die rcx plane of the year u i just finished reading your july 2011 issue and i was very pleased to find rich uravitch s report on the florida jets event i had hoped to attend this year to see all the amazing turbine hardware but just could not make it for 2011 i hope to go to the event next year i have one question however who makes the great-looking gulfstream g3 shown on page 91 roger mckay email florida jets gulfstream write to us we welcome your comments and suggestions address letters to airwaves model airplane news air age media 88 danbury rd wilton ct 06897-7337 usa email man@airage.com letters may be edited for clarity and brevity we regret that owing to the tremendous numbers of letters we receive we cannot respond to every one 14 more from this issue at modelairplanenews.com
