Club Mag. For August 2016 CHAIRMAN’S CHAT Well, well what a great night we had at our annual BBQ on Wednesday July 20th! The weather was very kind to us although a little on the cool side but it was dry. A few thank yous are due: first off to Dave Betts for the use of his BBQ and for donating the gas and thanks also to him for doing the cooking aided by his wife Debbie. Thanks also to Steve Brown for donating the rolls and to Ray for bringing them. Mike Coffey got us the burgers and other cooking duties were taken on by Steve Bagnall and Dave Rawson, thanks to them also. Handing over the spatulas and ‘pinnies’ gave Mike Coffey, and myself the opportunity to have a walk about and chat to the members. If you look on the website you will see photos of the event taken by Paul Barratt. One of those attending was Stuart Lomas with his Lomas amb3ulance (one of two he has) and if you didn’t know it, his great, great Grandfather formed the company that made them,

latterly based on a lengthened Range Rover chassis. It was good to meet with Nigel Chadwick and wife June who were former owners of Marple Bridge Post Office before retiring. (former members of the club too). Come back Nigel! On the front of this edition is a picture of Keith Smith’s flying Standard Ten which as always is immaculately turned out. I read that the third Festival of the Unexceptional, highlighting Classics of the 70’s and 80’s took place on July 23rd. This event includes such common cars as the Hillman Avenger, Austin Allegro, Renault 6, Fiat 127, Vauxhall Chevette, Chrysler Horizon etc, etc. The usual predicable stuff is not allowed in, so fancy Ferraris etc. are not allowed in. The organisers, Haggerty Insurance, also awarded cups for the best or most unusual cars in the car park. Unfortunately for us the event takes place at Whittlebury near Silverstone so it is unlikely that we will attend next year but life is full of surprises isn't it! With this issue CP has sent out the entry passes for the Poynton show but it still not too late to get one but I’m afraid you will have to phone me first and come and collect it. (Those who receive magazines by email will receive them in the post) Regarding the Stockport show that will have been and gone by the time you get this mag so it will be reported on in the next issue. In a previous magazine I wrote about the Routemaster bus and to my surprise the paint for these buses was made in Bolton by a company specialising in paint for ships. As such WJ Leigh and Company, a family firm, does not exist in its own right having been taken over by an American company. Now that we are out of the EU no doubt we will be able to by petrol in gallons again, measure in feet and inches and maybe rods, poles and perches and buy goods by the pound and not kilos. And I forgot that maybe we can measure in feet and inches and get the temperature in Fahrenheit. Enough of that because I don't think it will happen do you! And so, that's enough of my ramblings for this month except that CP will be more than pleased to receive your application fo4r the Club show at Wyevale.

I look forward, as I always say, to seeing you at the next club night on August 18th for a natter and noggin. Although Richard Burnham produces some excellent runs he could do with more input from members so please don’t be shy, come forward your help is needed to organise some runs for us. On a final note please take note that Harrods car accessory shop no longer advertise with us, and therefore any discount to members is no longer available. I understand the original owner John has retired and that his son has taken over hence the divorce. A couple of one liners:‘Apparently I snore so loudly that it scares everyone in the car I'm driving.’ ‘Children in the back seats of cars cause accidents, but accidents in the back seats of cars cause children.’ 5

Editorial Magazine Front Cover Photograph. Keith Smith’s Standard Flying 10 pictured at the Club BBQ In July New Members Phil Baker - Came and introduced himself at the Club BBQ. His car? Well it’s a 1966 MGB ‘Sebring’ Replica, powered by a Triumph Stag engine. The car has been entered for the club show, with a description of the things that make it special. Hugh Macaulay - has a 1974 Vauxhall Magnum (Viva) Welcome to you both. Tatton tickets, and Poynton Passes with this magazine, or in the post, if you are an email recipient. The Stockport Classic Show 14th, this coming weekend, instructions already issued. If you are not bringing a car, why not come down to the Market place,& join in. There will be cars and Bikes to see, and the Vintage Village Fair will be taking place, (over 70 stalls of authentic vintage treasurers). Woodsmoor Classic Car Show A message from H&H CVC members, Carolyn Boe, and Andy Stobbie. We will be running the Woodsmoor Classic Car Show again in 2016. Hoping for good weather this year! Last year we had 132 cars, our biggest total ever, which was a magnificent turnout particularly considering the weather- proving that classic cars do not melt in the rain. Many thanks to all those who supported us. When we counted up last year we found we had raised the magnificent total of £3020 split equally between St Ann’s Hospice and Tommy’s baby charity. Traffic Lights When the Lord Mayor of London switched on the first 'robot' traffic lights, known as 'Eva' (for 'Electromatic Vehicle-Actuated Street Traffic controller') at the junction of Cornhill and Gracechurch Street in the City of London on 14th March 1932, an explosion of sewer gas temporarily fused the system. Made by a London company, 'Eva' lights were in use by the autumn of 1933 at many major intersections in London and the provinces as well as in Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Zurich, Johannesburg, Durban and Sydney. The first pedestrian operated street crossing lights were erected on the Brighton Road in Croydon, Surrey, in 1932. Oddpics Utterly obscure British Car Humour 8

MG SECTION REPORT from Richard Lomas July has been a very busy month on the event calendar for H&H, but we started off by attending the Hope show at the end of June , run by the Sheffield and Hallamshire club, an evening show which has gone from strength to strength. We joined up with GVEC to the Didsbury show with seven MGs attending a really good mix starting with a 1966 MG midget to a 2005 MG TF the weather held out and we had very pleasant day. On the 20th July we had our annual BBQ with a chance to display our cars a good turn out with plenty of time for a natter about everything MG. Four of our members travelled over to Chesterfield to the Marcham run with the MGOC group, a run around Yorkshire,and Derbyshire and back to Buxton Pavilion gardens to show their cars. The Hare and Hounds won the trophy again for the club with the most cars and members represented, another trophy for the cupboard this run is always well supported by a very friendly and we'll run club who we are always happy to support thank you. Capesthorne Hall, Manchester Airport shows have been attended by a number of our members so all in all a very busy month . We are hosting a CLASSIC CAR SHOW in the Historic STOCKPORT MARKET PLACE on the 14TH AUGUST anyone from local MG clubs is welcome to come and have a look around it will be a free event, from 10am to 4 pm , with very good mix of classic and modern cars. 9

More MG talk - The curious death of Cecil Kimber In 1924 Cecil Kimber founded the MG sports-car marque, becoming, at the age of just 36, the father of the small, affordable sports car. Despite his commercial success, however, Kimber was fired from the parent company in 1941 for accepting a military repair contract without seeking board clearance first. He had little trouble finding another job, and in December 1942 he joined a London engineering company as a super-salesman. On the night of Sunday, 4 February 1945 (World War II was still raging) , Kimber went to King's Cross station in London to catch the 6 pm train bound for Leeds. He intended to alight at Peterborough, one of the first stops, for a sales meeting the following morning. The London and North Eastern Railway's Silver Fox locomotive, numbered 2512, rumbled out of the station, hauling its 590-ton, 17 -carriage train. However, as heavy rain lashed the rails, Silver Fox's wheels slipped so violently that the engine stalled, and the train began to roll backwards. The route for outgoing trains had already been re-set to allow the 7 pm Aberdeen express to depart from platform 10. But in the King's Cross signal box, a signalman detected what was happening to the stricken Leeds train and tried frantically to divert the by-now runaway train back to platform 15. The last coach had crossed the points before they began to move. The last two coaches derailed and the very last one toppled over. While 25 injured passengers were ferried to nearby hospitals, rescuers used flamecutters to reach the final two victims trapped inside. Both were dead. One was Cecil Kirk, a Blackpool fishing-company manager. The other was Cecil Kimber. The severity of the crash meant that train services took 19 days to resume fully. An inspector's report later concluded that brand -new track, barely worn train wheels, the heavy rain and a I: 105 gradient on the line were collectively responsible. Kimber was only on that train because he couldn'1t 0get the petrol coupons to drive to Peterborough in his own MG.

Chat from Barry Lester Saab Sonnet (65-74) . The prototype The Saab Sonnet came in 3 versions, the first MK1 came out in 1965 powered by Saab's fantastic two-Stroke engine, but only six made it in to the showrooms (so, not a big seller) but today replicas are around in Sweden. The Mk2 came in 1966 first with the two-Stroke, and from 1967 the Saab 96s V4 unit was fitted. Sonnet Mk 2 12

Sonnet Mk3 This still was not taking on the world, so a redesigned version by the Italian styling house Coggiola the MK3 came in 1970. This was not a bad looking car but was up against the Ford Capri and Saab gave up in 74 and went back to safe family cars. That is until the 99 turbo from 77 now it really was ‘Game On’ with a Garrett T3 turbo and water injection. __________________________________ 13

Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip - from FBHVC As we know Drive It Day commemorates the 64 cars that left London on the first day of the Thousand Mile Trial on 23 April 1900. This was professionally organised with fuel and accommodation en route by the RAC, starting in London and passing through Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester, travelled through Scotland, then passed back through more English locations until they were back in London again. The tour lasted until 12 May and 46 cars made it to the finish line. In comparison, three years later a doctor, the wonderfully named Horatio Nelson Jackson, was having a drink in the San Francisco University Club, when he got into a discussion about the future of automobiles. Most people in the club felt they were a useless fad but Jackson believed they were the next big thing and accepted a wager of $50 that he would be first to cross the USA from coast to coast by car. The terms specified that Jackson could travel with a mechanic, Sewall Crocker, who was given the job of choosing the car. Crocker selected a 20-horsepower, twocylinder automobile made by the Winton Motor Carriage Company. He also purchased the supplies they would need which included fishing gear, pots, pans, and sleeping bags as well assorted items for keeping the car going through what promised to be challenging terrain. Jackson provided an axe, a spade, extra tools, a pistol, and spare containers for water and gas… there were no gas stations along the route as there was not yet a route at all. They departed on 23 May and shortly after starting purchased a bull terrier they named Bud who became, along with the Winton, a major attraction wherever they went. Bud was apparently the perfect companion. He became quite skilled at watching the road and bracing for hills and bumps, and Jackson noted that was the only member of the trio who, “used no profanity for the entire trip”. They arrived in New York on 26 July having averaged 71 miles per day. Jackson was later to say the trip cost $8,000. After enlisting to fight in the First World War, he was wounded in action on the Western front and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. After the war, Dr and Mrs. Jackson seemed to have lived successfully in Vermont with only one driving incident to mar their memories. One day in Burlington, Jackson got ticketed for speeding; he was going at over 6 miles per hour. The PBS channel made a documentary, Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip, narrated by Tom Hanks, celebrating the centenary.
