the western weekender friday july 1 2011 news local 3 students claim they are being denied resources at the university of western sydney and have called for the re-instatement of a student union claiming its disappearance is having an effect on students turn to such as a women s room or officer even though the offender was charged mr holmes said the main reason women and other students do not have these facilities is the fact that the university s student union the hive was shut down without justification and had all funding cut the union was literally given 24 hours notice and even though an independent report stated there were no problems with the existing union uws maintained their decision he said th is is the third student union uws has intervened in and closed two students david lenton and dani barley took it upon themselves to approach the university s board of trustees and request that specific space for women and queers be reinstated mr lenton who is completing a thesis in gender studies at the kingswood campus said the board approved the move two weeks ago but it was concerning that they had allowed the resources to disappear in the fi rst place every time the union is restructured the space for it has been reduced there are no specific rooms for people to escape and relax in and with no union there is no space for anyone which is why myself and dani barley approached the board he said there is a culture of misogyny and homophobia in general and at my campus there tends to be gatherings of hyper-masculine guys which can create unease for female students ms barley who studies arts said reaction to the proposal for women s and queer rooms on each campus was positive but only a small step in the right direction for improving student services unfortunately when the women s rooms were closed decades of resources were thrown out so now we will have to start from scratch and begin a process of resource procurement ms barley said there will be a series of meetings to begin implementation of the rooms again uws has denied that the daily running of student services was disrupted by the dissolution of the hive the university believes there needs to be more engaged activity at the local campus level a uws spokesperson said a student leadership group was established as an interim student representative body until elections are held in september/october [this year u niversity campuses flourish with diversity in gender and sexuality cultural backgrounds political ideologies and interests but university of western sydney uws students at penrith claim they have been denied pivotal resources that encourage and protect different diversity groups currently there is no independent student representative union and as a result the provision of resources for female and queers has been severely hampered survey results released by the national union of students indicate 86 per cent of female students have had a sexual comment made about them in public and 25 per cent have had unwanted physical contact of a sexual nature david holmes who has been involved with student politics at uws and the university board for six years said there are currently no specific female or queer resources available to students dealing with personal issues women do not have any representatives no support and no place to meet at the hawkesbury campus a woman was assaulted but had no support network to concerned students dani barley and david lenton [photo melinda jenkins celebrating 500,000 successful treatments underarms $19 full face $29 brazilian $39 chest $69 half legs $89 full legs $169 penrith clinic ph 02 8014 8914 shop 151 585 high st penrith nsw 2750 full back $149 anti-wrinkle injections $9.90 per unit 1009wwd8111 dermal fillers bondi junction caringbah anti-wrinkle injections laser hair removal skin treatments chatswood darlinghurst drummoyne north rocks north sydney parramatta penrith sydney cbd

4 opinion friday july 1 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds of our fi rst female prime minister has failed dismally and if an election was held tomorrow the polls suggest gillard would be turfed out but the herald reported on tuesday that the latest essential media poll which is released weekly found labor s primary vote would jump a massive 13 percentage points from 32 per cent to 45 per cent if mr rudd were the labor leader and mr abbott stayed as the coalition leader so where has it all gone wrong for gillard and why has the move failed so badly that it could cost them the next election troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au 9.30am family service 6pm night service a member of australian christian churches you will enjoy this come and hear pastor mick wrotniak sunday people knowing what has happened during the day well before they turn on the 6pm news of an evening the internet has certainly changed the way we view our news and whilst print media continues to be a major force in content delivery there is no doubt that publishers like us need to ensure we ve got both the online and offl ine world covered today we re excited to launch our brand new website at www.westernweekender com.au which will provide up-to-date local news and information on the region complementing what we do here in print each friday we ve still got some tweaking to do but the product you see online today will certainly change the way we look at local news and we look forward to bringing you more breaking stories and more regular content via our online portal there s some other significant news in the world of the weekender today with the appointment of our new sales manager simon gould this week we welcome simon to the team and should you be in business and want to talk to him he s waiting for your call here at the office we re very excited about these changes at the weekender and believe they will take us forward in an exciting direction not going forward as a result of change is the federal government with news this week that turning back the clock and installing kevin rudd as leader could well save labor it is no secret that labor is heading towards a disastrous result at the next federal election and a year after julia gillard was handed the role of pm in a dramatic 48 hours the experiment has failed labor s attempt at winning over the electorate with the pr-style appointment 1009wwd3527 n with the return of rudd most likely a passing fad and gillard losing popularity where to next for labor well fi rstly this is nothing new the fact that gillard couldn t win last year s election outright despite the excitement that should have been surrounding her proved very early on that voters were not impressed with the party itself dumping an elected prime minister labor at a state level has failed in this too and we ultimately saw the shuffle between iemma rees and keneally lead to a massive defeat earlier this year the public aren t stupid and they don t like to be treated that way either the quicker that political parties realise that playing musical chairs with their leaders particularly when in power will do them little good the quicker that the electorate will recognise stability and take proper notice of policy announcements and the like gillard was also unlucky in that she was forced to endure a number of failed schemes and concepts a number of them not her doing and of course she now faces implementing an unwanted carbon tax that will almost certainly cost her the next election no multi-million dollar advertising campaign can turn around the backlash but don t underestimate the coalition and tony abbott in all of this he is an extraordinary talent and has handled himself well both during last year s election campaign and in the time since the talk about malcolm turnbull perhaps taking over is hopefully hogwash because should the coalition not learn the lessons from their colleagues currently in power then they deserve what comes their way kevin rudd being the flavour of the month is probably just that as i cannot see a public that was planning to turn its back on him just a year ago suddenly deciding he s the right option for the future don t discount the emotion still surrounding his controversial departure and his farewell news conference which like so many before him was probably his best and bravest speech so with the return of rudd most likely just a passing fad and gillard losing popularity where to next for labor they have a whole heap of rising stars waiting in the wings but not many people would put their hand up to captain titanic ii knowing what happened the fi rst time around the man to feel sorry for in all of this is our local mp david bradbury david is a decent bloke always willing to lend an ear unfortunately in modern-day politics the joy of towing the party line is simply part of the job but the decisions made well above him will ultimately decide his fate it s a tough gig particularly for someone who is indeed a strong political talent labor face some tough decisions in the next 12 months that will ultimately decide whether they can return to
