landmark has long been considered a pioneer in creating a company dedicated to the exhibition of specialty independent and foreign film here is a look at our history acquired the single screen oriental in milwaukee originally opened in july of 1927 and the only standard movie palace ever built to incorporate east indian decor the theatre was also known for live performances including the violent femmes acquired the river oaks theatre in houston originally opened in november of 1939 the oriental is triplexed by adding 2 theatres underneath the balcony and without touching any of the original artwork of the main auditorium canal place cinema 4 screens opened on the edge of new orleans world-famous french quarter making it our first new build acquired the neptune in seattle in the early 1990 s landmark began multi-million dollar renovations of its historic buildings and embarking on a new era began developing new multiplex theatres of its own for the first time 1988 1989 landmark merged with the seven gables theatre circuit from seattle and portland and was purchased by heritage entertainment the 6 theatres still operating today are the crest egyptian guild 45th metro seven gables and varsity 1981 1982 landmark merged with movie inc from santa fe another small company capitalizing on the excellence of foreign alternative and classic films the theatres acquired and still under our operation are the river oaks in houston and tivoli in st louis 1990 s landmark was acquired by the samuel goldwyn company six new architecturally distinct venues now dot the american landscape increasing landmark s presence to major markets throughout the united states still no matter how large it grows the circuit continues to operate hand-in-hand with local communities to support the art of film the new locations include the westside pavillion the embarcadero the embassy the plaza frontenac the century center and the renaissance 1976 1979 1974 company as parallax theatres is founded with the opening of a vintage 1930 s neighborhood single screen theatre the nuart in los angeles acquired the harvard exit in seattle the programming was an adventuresome mix of repertory/revival doublefeatures that changed daily this mix also included smaller independent and foreign films and allowed landmark to grow into the largest repertory/revival movie-theatre circuit in the nation by the end of that decade in the early 1980s landmark faced the need to adapt to a changing world videocassette rentals and cable television became a household norm which meant our programming strategy was easier to duplicate at home we reoriented most of our theatres to exhibit first-run specialized foreign and re-released classics on longer open-ended runs we also began to convert some of our larger single screens into two or three screen buildings while keeping the architectural integrity intact and building new unique multiplexes the company also became known for selling gourmet concession stand offerings such as gourmet coffee espresso drinks fresh-baked goods imported chocolate and candy offerings.
