newsletter no 10 14 june 2011kia ora koutou dear parents and caregivers last week the 2011 normal schools principals conference was held in auckland the conference not only aimed to challenge our thinking but to consider the use of technology in pre-service education and how the universities are becoming more research based in their approach to teacher education it was a very thought provoking week with a range of presenters ­ from schools in auckland takapuna normal intermediate and epsom normal the university of auckland associate professor graeme aitken and educational consultants jay mctighe jonathan black and mark treadwell included in todays newsletter is an insert homework with attitude in 2011 the purpose of it is to outline the schools homework policy and for parents to have an opportunity to share the expectations with their child our overall aim is to work in partnership with you parents/caregivers to ensure your childs learning at home and at school is meaningful stimulating and enjoyable teacher only day on the friday before queens birthday weekend the staff were at school participating in an ict information communication technology day organised by the schools ict curriculum committee it was a very hands-on experience for all teachers rotated around workshops throughout the day and were introduced to or further developed their knowledge of wikispaces blogspots advanced use of editing/scanning/photocopying techniques fliptop cameras utube lms learning management system and electronic absentee registers staff found the day invaluable and the ict curriculum committee aim to continue to upskill staff in their areas of interest and/or need 1

super sport hockey on 8th june two school hockey teams competed at the super sport tournament held at the twin turfs both teams performed well against strong opposition each finishing the day in 2nd place a large number of goals were scored by both teams the girls won 6 out of 7 games and the boys finished with 5 wins 1 draw and 1 loss congratulations to both the girls and boys teams who represented our school at this tournament girls team 2nd boys team 2nd libby willocks thomas viles amber jensen ben oconnor ruby clarke ben blyde brianne peters bradley grapes monika sinclair hamish taylor keely mcknight james neilson georgia dix matthew taylor rhiannon fechney joel fleet-stephenson eva bailey david martin special thanks go to mr dearlove for co-ordinating with the other participating schools miss webber for her administration and organisation on the day and mr dix and mrs oconnor who coached our super sport hockey teams achievement awards at our weekly monday morning assembly achievement awards are presented to students in each team recognising outstanding achievement in the academic and citizenship areas of school we congratulate the following students who have received awards at our monday assemblies over the last fortnight arataki tangaroa lane hall matthew joe 2

performance was thoroughly enjoyed by the school-wide audience and visitors a very big thank you goes to teachers barbara pritchard kaine hokianga and team leader tiffany good and of course to all the students of tangaroa team congratulations to · palmerston north school of karate do 2011 term 2 grading results orange belts ­ 7th mon sator chambers mathias ronimus orange belt ­ 7th kyu alex schwarzenbach green belt ­ 6th mon gregor mcintosh purple belt ­ 4th mon sean naylor · tom tremain and callum mcrae who have been selected for the manawatu u13 boys basketball team from the student council mufti day last thursday the school council organised a mufti day to support the salvation armys food bank more than 800 cans of food were donated for the cause it is important our young people are aware of a need in the community and help where they can thank you to the school councillors and mr gunn for organising the day and to students parents/caregivers for donating the much needed food school disco ­ thursday 23 june 7pm ­ 9pm our first school disco for this year is to be held on 23 june school council students mr gunn who leads this group of students and other staff members always put a lot of effort into making this a successful event only those students who have consistently displayed high standards of behaviour during the first half of this year will be invited to purchase a ticket it is considered a privilege not a right to be invited to attend a school disco 4

parents are asked to collect their child from inside the performing arts centre at 9pm the students will be seated on the bleachers until collected to avoid traffic congestion you are requested to enter the school through the south street entrance and exit through the linton street gate a high standard of behaviour will be enforced the parents of children who misbehave will be phoned to collect them or they will be taken home if necessary cellphones and cameras are not permitted colgate carton race yummy sticker competition the student council has registered the school in the colgate carton race and the yummy sticker competition we are asking families who have any colgate cartons at home or yummy stickers from apples if they could be sent to the classrooms for collection the school then has the opportunity to win sports gear from these providers the colgate carton race is only for this month june while the yummy sticker competition is continuous we appreciate your support lit quiz ­ national competition good luck to our a lit quiz team madeleine macmaster theo darbois catherine reynolds william carswell and brittany scott travelling reserve who will be competing this wednesday at the national lit quiz competition at parliament buildings wellington advanced notice ­ parent teacher student conferences year 7 parent teacher student conferences thursday 30 june year 8 parent teacher student conferences thursday 14 july school will close at 2.00 p.m on both of these days the conference booking sheets will go out to parents prior to these weeks 5
