editors`s note this book is based on the dokumentation einer automobilmarke by monika and uwe hucke published in 1976 it is a book that still enjoys a well deserved place of honour within the community of bugatti lovers the realisation of from milan to molsheim turned out to be a special challenge the charms of the original was to be kept and to be presented in harmony with the new material and articles by the author julius kruta unfortunately uwe hucke passed away a few years ago and could not accompany that hot phase of updating his book any more that was one of the reasons why his original texts have been kept unaltered as much as possible despite add-ons an attentive reader will therefore notice that the style of the text changes from type to type sometimes he will get information about a car by a first person narrator or even accompany uwe hucke on a ride in one of his bugattis sometimes he will find an objective report about ettore bugatti s creations that has been written in the third person so it was left to no one but uwe hucke himself to narrate from his personal point of view julius kruta s narrative stays in the background on the other hand it was him who was able to collect such an incredible amount of pictures never published before that despite its some 800 pages and almost 1000 illustrations this book features less than ten photos that were not taken during the period that concerns the subject of bugatti that made it possible to depict the different vehicles in the exact way ettore jean or the other geniuses of the bugatti team had designed them we are particularly proud of that a lot of this pictures come from roland bugatti s archive which uwe hucke could acquire and while we are at it let us praise and give our special thanks to michael ulrich our third man who was in charge of the earliest bugatti types diesem buch liegt die bereits 1976 erschienene »dokumentation einer automobilmarke« von monika und uwe hucke zu grunde ein buch das noch heute seinen wohlverdienten platz in der bugatti-szene genießt für uns stellte »from milan to molsheim« eine ganz besondere herausforderung dar es galt den charme des originals zu erhalten und zusammen mit den vielen neuen erkenntnissen bildern und details die der autor julius kruta zusammentrug harmonisch zwischen zwei buchdekkeln zu präsentieren uwe hucke verstarb leider vor wenigen jahren und konnte die »heiße phase« dieses buches nicht mehr begleiten auch aus diesem grunde sollten seine ursprünglichen texte weitestgehend erhalten bleiben der leser wird daher merken daß von typ zu typ der stil wechselt mal erfährt man von einem ich-erzähler näheres zum fahrzeug oder begleitet gar den autor auf eine fahrt im bugatti mal ist es die nüchternere erzählperspektive in der dritten person die einem die schöpfungen ettore bugattis näher bringen möchte uwe hucke sollte es also vorbehalten sein aus erster hand zu berichten so wie er es bereits in der »dokumentation einer automobilmarke« tat julius kruta hingegen bleibt im stil des neutralen chronisten ihm gelang es zusätzlich eine so unglaubliche anzahl bislang unveröffentlichter bilder zusammenzutragen daß das vorliegende buch trotz seiner rund 800 seiten und knapp 1200 abbildungen nur knapp zehn fotos enthält die nicht aus der zeit stammen in der wir uns beim jeweiligen bugatti bewegen nur auf diese weise konnte es gelingen die verschiedenen fahrzeug exakt so darzustellen wie sie ettore jean und die anderen genialen köpfe aus dem bugatti-team entworfen hatten viele der neuen bilder stammen übrigens aus dem archiv von roland bugatti das uwe hucke erwerben konnte und wo wir schon dabei sind uns selbst zu loben ein ganz besonderer dank geht an michael ulrich der sich sozusagen als dritter im bunde um die ganz frühen bugatti-typen kümmerte verlagshaus monsenstein vannerdat 7[close]

introduction by jens hucke the original bugatti book by monika and uwe hucke has long been out of print my parents edited it in our library in germany i still remember my mother letrasetting the chapter headlines and the pictures being stuck in place with the uhu paper glue stick this was desktop publishing early 70s style a lot has changed since then in the intervening 30 years uwe hucke has driven restored and owned some of the most unusual and rarest of bugattis no one else could ever hope to write about bugatti with such intimate knowledge be it the type 53 four wheel drive the le mans winning 57g or the indianapolis type 29/30 we would not have been able to enjoy these cars at historic events over the last decades had it not been for his passion to revive these historical gems and his desire to see them in action he successfully organised the first historic grand prix events in monaco sharing top billing with the famous f1 race back in the 80s he acquired most of the personal archives from the bugatti estate and following years of study much of it shared with hugh conway snr who was a frequent visitor at our house in france found a good home for their long term future and preservation at the french musée nationale de l automobile he was also a founding member of the bugatti trust in england to which he contributed for many years supporting the trust s aim of making the works of bugatti available for study by all he was fortunate to get to know chiron with whom we had morning coffees in monaco by the larvotto sea front rené dreyfus became a friend mr dreyfus teased my father calling him patron having driven quite a few times his bugattis at international historic events it was fascinating to observe some of the interactions between some former molsheim employees and my father more than once when recounting events the previous generation would start a sentence with tu te rappelles quand do you remember when as if my father had been there the fact that he was not born until 1939 did not appear to matter too much das original von monika und uwe hucke ist schon lange vergriffen meine eltern arbeiteten in unserer bibliothek an ihm ich erinnere mich noch genau wie meine mutter die kapitelüberschriften mit letraset aufbrachte und die bilder stück für stück mit uhu im layout einklebte das war »desktop-publishing« im stile der frühen 70er es hat sich ein menge geändert seit damals in den vergangenen 30 jahren hat uwe hucke einige der ungewöhnlichsten und seltensten bugattis gefahren restauriert und besessen niemand wußte mit so viel fachwissen und persönlicher erfahrung über bugatti zu schreiben wie er sei es der allrad-typ 53 der le mans-sieger typ 57g oder der indianapolis typ 29/30 wir könnten diese modelle bei heutigen oldtimerveranstaltungen nicht so bewundern hätte es nicht seine leidenschaft gegeben diese historischen juwelen auch in voller aktion zu erleben er organisierte in den achtzigern erfolgreich den ersten grand prix für historische fahrzeuge in monaco der sich hinter den berühmten formel 1-rennen nicht zu verstecken brauchte er erwarb den größten teil der persönlichen archive aus dem bugatti-nachlaß und fand für sie nach studienreichen jahren meist zusammen mit hugh conway senior der zu einem gern und oft gesehenen besucher in unserem haus wurde eine neue heimat im französischen musée nationale de l`automobile er war außerdem eines der gründungsmitglieder des bugatti trust in england dem er auch viele jahre angehörte immer bestrebt dem ziel das gesamtwerk von bugatti für jeden zugänglich zu machen gerecht zu werden er hatte das glück chiron kennen zu dürfen mit dem er den morgenkaffee in monaco einzunehmen pflegte auch rené dreyfus wurde ein guter freund er zog meinen vater gerne auf indem er ihn den »patron« nannte und fuhr seine bugattis bei internationalen veranstaltungen für historische fahrzeuge mehr als einmal wenn er sich vergangenes in erinnerung rief schien es als sei mein vater mit dabei gewesen »tu te rappelles quand « »weißt du noch als « daß er »damals« noch nicht einmal geboren war interessierte wenig zu dieser zeit war er in den späten vierzigern und seine gesundheit bereits im begriff sich zu verschlechtern 8[close]

by the time he was in his late forties his health started to deteriorate first his heart became ill then cancer slowly took its toll however with the support of my mother he carried on through sheer determination he gifted my sister and i many more years of his company and wisdom in 1996 a young man from germany came to visit us in england julius kruta suggested that a new print run of the bugatti book be made during the discussion my father agreed with him that it would only take some six months to update it and so the collaboration started it took much longer than six months over the ensuing years julius was a frequent visitor to our house whenever his work and my father s health permitted i have no doubt that this project as well as other bugatti projects such as the recreation of the type 5 kept him going on the morning of 17th april 2002 my father gave me instructions to oversee some works on another restoration he was on his way to hospital for his weekly chemotherapy session he looked profoundly sad i might not come back today but he was determined to get back and so he did uwe hucke passed away at home on the 19th of april 2002 he was only 62 it is a credit to julius that he carried on working for so long on the revised edition of the bugatti book sourcing so many new photos he did not just complete it but improved it so much new material has surely not been published about bugatti since the original nearly four decades ago i have no doubt my father would be proud of this book and of julius i am just grateful that i have a copy as i use it nearly on a daily basis as a reference tool no doubt there are flaws in translation and like all books as soon as you are committed to print errors become apparent so maybe it is not perfect but never again will a book be written by a collector who can lay claim to have owned and frequently restored and driven nearly every type of significant bugatti ever made zuerst war es das herz dann forderte der krebs langsam seinen tribut wie auch immer mit der hilfe meiner mutter ging es immer weiter dank seiner entschlossenheit schenkte er meiner schwester und mir noch viele jahre seiner gesellschaft und weisheit es war 1996 als ein junger mann aus deutschland zu uns nach england kam julius kruta schlug vor eine neuausgabe des besagten buches zu machen mein vater stimmte mit ihm überein daß es höchstens ein paar monate dauern könne das buch auf den neusten stand zu bringen es sollte weit länger dauern während der folgenden jahre war julius ein regelmäßiger besucher in unserem haus immer wenn es seine zeit oder die meines vaters erlaubte ich habe keine zweifel sowohl die arbeit an diesem buch als auch am typ 5 gaben ihm lebensmut am morgen des 17 april 2002 gab mein vater mir noch anweisungen ein paar details einer weiteren restaurierung zu überwachen er war auf dem weg zum krankenhaus zu seiner wöchentlichen chemotherapie er sah tief betrübt aus »es kann sein daß ich heute nicht mehr zurückkehre « doch er sollte nach hause kommen und dort starb er am 19 april 2002 er wurde lediglich 62 jahre alt es ist mehr als dankenswert daß julius die arbeiten an der geplanten neuausgabe weiterführte er stellte sie nicht nur fertig er verbesserte sie gar und fügte zahlreiche neue bislang unveröffentlichte bilder hinzu so viel neues material wurde in den vergangenen vier jahrzehnten seit dem erscheinen des originals sicherlich nicht veröffentlicht ich habe keine zweifel mein vater wäre stolz auf dieses buch und auf julius ich bin schon sehr dankbar daß ich die 1976er ausgabe habe nutze ich sie doch fast täglich als referenz zweifelsohne gibt es Übersetzungsfehler und wie in allen büchern findet man die fehler erst sobald man mit dem druck begonnen hat vielleicht ist es nicht perfekt aber es wird nie wieder ein buch geben das von jemandem geschrieben wurde der nahezu jeden wichtigen bugatti besitzen restaurieren und natürlich fahren durfte jens hucke 9[close]

carlo bugatti left carlo bugatti at château st jean in dorlisheim at about 1930 links carlo bugatti beim château st jean in dorlisheim um 1930 in order to understand the life of ettore bugatti it is useful to know more about the bugatti family the family name can be traced back as far as the 17th century when the well-known painter zanetto bugatti took part in the decoration of several churches in milan his work can still be seen today giovanni luigi bugatti ettore s grandfather was an architect but is chiefly remembered for his neverending efforts to make a perpetual motion device work carlo bugatti was born on february 12th 1856 he was of strong build a gifted craftsman benefitting from great intelligence he studied art at the brera school and the École des beaux-arts in paris his sister luigia nicknamed bice was living with the famous swiss painter segantini occasionally segantini would work with carlo um das leben ettore bugattis zu verstehen ist es hilfreich etwas mehr über die familie zu erfahren schon im 17 jahrhundert schuf zanetto bugatti damals ein bedeutender maler werke die heute noch in den kirchen mailands zu bewundern sind giovanni luigi bugatti ettores großvater arbeitete als architekt ist aber hauptsächlich wegen seiner niemals endenden versuche das perpetuum mobile zu kreieren dauerhaft in erinnerung geblieben carlo bugatti wurde am 12 februar 1856 geboren er war ein kräftiger mann der handwerklich sehr begabt war und über eine ungewöhnliche intelligenz verfügte er studierte kunst in brera und an der École des beaux arts in paris seine schwester luigia die den spitznamen »bice« trug war mit dem sehr bekannten schweizer maler segantini verheiratet es kam daher auch zu gemeinschaftlichen werken von carlo und segantini 17[close]
