thursday the 23 june 2011 dear parents and friends of the school hello/kia ora toko school community meeting thank you to those families that were able to attend last night we had a good meeting and reports were shared by the board fundraising and pta committees and the principal after the meeting we moved into groups and had a look at the schools strategic plan that is up for review at the end of this year if you were not able to attend and would like to feed into this review please feel free to come in to school and get a copy of the strategic plan we really do value input from all in our school community at the end of the meeting the staff shared the science trolley and all of the equipment that we are using in our classrooms to support the teaching of science thank you to the pta for putting on supper welcome back to jan worthington over the past year room 3 s numbers have fluctuated from 28 ­ 34 children by the end of the term room 3 will be back to 31 students as a result we have been fortunate to employ jan worthington for the rest of the school term from 9.00 ­ 12.30 to work with our year 4 students in room 4 jan is an absolutely fabulous classroom teacher her focus will be literacy/numeracy and the arts i hope you will join me in welcoming her back to our school friday assemblies now that jones cup practices have finished assemblies will return to starting at 2.15pm community survey have you completed this yet we would really appreciate it if you could take the time to fill this in and return to school by friday 24 june school council update on friday 15 july the school council will be asking all students to dress up as their favourite book character and to bring their favourite book to school during the day we will have buddy reading between classes and by different staff members we would like everyone to donate a gold coin which we will collect on the day and donate to the christchurch schools appeal just a reminder that we are still collecting unwanted cell phones these can be placed in the box under the student notice board this is the last week to get your anchor milk cartons into school so we can enter the bar codes on the website thank you to those families that have supported the above welcome to our new school families room 3 ezekiel and tristan o leary room 4 brittan o leary our school roll sits at 104 quality learning for all in a caring community

news from our classrooms from the sports desk jones cup 2011 ­ tuesday 21 june after postponing this event on monday the weather was kind to us on tuesday and we had a really fine warm day it was great to see so many school families from our cluster here to support the day all children displayed themselves with manners good sportsmanship and enthusiasm thank you once again to our fabulous umpires and referees from stratford high school and leith martin vaughan jones and nicole chadwick for assisting in this st john s for making themselves available ­ they were kept busy with minor injuries our fabulous parent coaches for giving up their time to assist with coaching our friendly helpful busy pta who provided all of the food on the day my wonderful staff for all the work they did behind the scenes to make the day the success it was results are as follows junior rugby ­ leonard cup toko tigers intermediate rugby ­ toko football cup toko storm senior rugby ­ dick childs ever the children have been using many different poem forms and writing their own poems many of these will be on show at our assembly on friday we are in full swing practising for midhirst play day and our version of the rainbow fish is coming together nicely the children thoroughly enjoyed their jones cup experience those on the sports fields and in the classroom thanks mrs worthington we are starting a new writing focus next week based on imaginative writing could the children all bring along one toy to show the class this will be kept at school for the week and then returned thanks rugby tournament in stratford 2 weeks ago the children had an awesome time and both teams were in the semi finals with one team making it through to the finals the children played very well and came second the year 4 s started as very dedicated cheer leaders but by the end of the day they were playing as well to give children a chance to rest i am always proud to take your children on field trips as they are as far as i am concerned the best mannered children at an event and they always support each other interviews were a great opportunity to see parents and children and for the children to share the terrific work they have been doing education review office ero to visit toko school toko school will be hosting the education review from monday 27 ­ wednesday 29 june fundraising committee update toko school quiz night ­ saturday 16 july please put this date in your diary and get a team together last year s quiz was a lot of fun and well supported by the community please the jones cup team the toko dragons i need your rugby jerseys back at school by tomorrow as the netball team require them for sunday your assistance in this matter is appreciated high vis raincoats last year we received funding for these coats they were given out to some bus children we did not have quite enough to go round especially for the older children we have now got some more and these were given out to the children the other day this was a one off purchase if you don t want one for your child and they have one please return it to the school office as children leave and return their coats we will pass them on to other children if you have any queries please contact annette at the school office yummy stickers please keep the stickers rolling in as more stickers more sports gear community notices riverlands bobby calf promotion our school can win with riverlands all you have to do is nominate toko school on your seasonal bobby calf declaration form each calf you send to riverlands is have been watching the weather very closely hoping for some more snow to hit the mountain i have contacted the mountain and they are looking to open nd on 2 july so that would be just in time if snow arrives however just encase a whole new alternative programme has been put in place for camp so no matter what the outcome room 5 are very excited and ready to go further information regarding this option will come out next week in room 5 our science fair entries are hotting up with all of the scientific experiments being finished and the write ups to come from our learning we are really looking forward to sharing these with you in maths we have started our new topic of geometry and the tricky business of using a protractor and compass accurately we can t wait to master these just a further reminder the steam cars will need to be th complete by thursday 30 june for registration in the fair thanks for all the parent support with these the children have enjoyed making them so far attached
