general information activity days are an opportunity for staff and pupils to collaborate and share new experiences this year we have tried to make sure that there is a variety of different activities available with the opportunity to either select a different activity for each of the 2 days or opt for a more intensive 2 day experience this booklet contains information on all the activities available and whether they are a one or two day event costs if applicable as well as number of places are also included this year pupils will be able to use an online form to choose the activities they would like to do as places for each activity are limited they will also need to choose a couple of reserve activities as well just in case the form is accessible by entering this web address http tiny.cc/fldactivity2011 pupils can either do this at home or at school once all the data has been collated you will then receive a letter from the activity organisers explaining the activity in more detail if you have any questions about the activity days feel free to email me ial@budehaven.cornwall.sch.uk

action in art we will use a variety of techniques and materials to create sculptures prints paintings drawings etc based on the theme of action there will be four different activities and a chance to work in different ways over the two days the work made will be on display in the castle gallery next january and will also be made for positioning in the school grounds for all to see cost £2 body boarding no days 2 places 55 bodyboarding on fairly local beaches all three members of staff are committed and experienced surfers or bodyboarders with many years experience of the north cornwall beaches mr stritch is also a beach qualified lifeguard who works in this capacity for the rnli during high season the emphasis in this activity will be on having fun and making the maximum use of the wonderful resource on our doorsteps we have a minibus so we can travel to the beach which is most suitable for the conditions on a particular day pupils will be closely supervised in the sea but must be confident swimmers each pupil will need a board wetsuit and surf flippers they should expect to surf for several hours each day with appropriate rests and nourishment beginners or shredders will receive tuition and video analysis equipment permitting there will be a small charge to cover fuel car parking and prizes fingers crossed for a good swell cost £5 no days 2 places 15 beach book club good old fashioned reading for pleasure prior to the event participants will be invited to nominate the reading list and copies will be paid for and supplied by the english department before hitting the beach you will have read some of the material and will be ready to discuss it in the sunshine over a picnic we will spend much of the day reading peacefully breaking only to discuss our responses to the literature a fantastic opportunity to share some of the literature that you love and to discover some more cost free no days 1 places 25

beachcombing a day exploring local beaches there will be some walking some stopping for refreshments some collecting and some beach games our route will depend on the weather and the tides but expect to walk as far as sandymouth if the weather is good we may stop for a bit of light bodyboarding or relaxation in the sun very little money involved just plenty of suncream and drinks hopefully not wellies and raincoats cost free no days 1 places 40 cake making baking and decorating you will make two flavours of cupcakes during the day and learn a variety of icing and decorating techniques to make your cupcakes look like the professionals you will have a selection to take home with you at the end of the day to share with your family cost £3 no days 1 places 30 rocket building you will work in teams to build a rocket you ll spend the morning creating your rocket and understanding how it works and then in the afternoon you will launch your rockets the cost includes the rocket kit that can be taken home cost £10 cycling no days 1 places 15 cycling is for reasonably fit people who have a bike of their own we will go on different routes each day to two local places the total distance will be 15 to 20 miles each day since this is cornwall there are quite a lot of hills but we take them fairly slowly the speed and fresh air are exhilerating and the feeling of achievement when you get back is worth all the effort it will be possible to leave your bike at school between the two activity days the activity will take place even if it rains cost free no days 2 places 40

orienteering this activity is mostly out of doors and does involve unsupervised time if chosen it would mean you worked in small groups and were active day 1 school and local area based you would do a course around the school and play some games to get used to recognising the symbols on an orienteering map after this you would do a local area course this would involve going out of school in small groups and being unsupervised the course would go up from school towards stratton in a big loop the day would finish with a colouring and other activities from the british orienteering web site day 2 you would be on a coach trip to a permanent orienteering course there is a course on the far side of holsworthy at cookworthy woods this would take the whole of the school day so you would need a packed lunch and be prepared to cope with difficult weather we would return in time for the school buses cost £10 no days 2 places 30 ceramics workshop for a day pupils will visit a professional ceramics workshop where they will have the opportunity to throw pots and hand build ceramics any work produced will be kept once it has been fired so several weeks later and can be used as gcse course work for art cost £20 no days 1 places 10 romeo and juliet from page to stage acting swordfighting movement and physical theatre these will be the aspects through which we produce our own 30 minute abridged version of romeo and juliet written by the royal shakespeare company on the second day at 6pm we will host an audience of staff students and parents to come and watch this modern twist on an shakespeare classic cost free no days 2 places 20

outdoor sports choose from two of the following ranking in your order of priority from 1st to 5th choice and you will then be allocated your activities for the day surfing for beginners y abseiling y kayaking y archery y canadian canoeing students will leave school at 9am and walk to their first activity lunch will be held at rosie s kitchen cafe crooklets beach where you can buy food or eat your own packed lunch following lunch students will take part in their second activity then walk back to school pupils should come dressed in sensible clothing for a day outside including a coat if the weather looks wet for kayaking and canadian canoeing pupils should bring a complete change of clothing and an old pair of trainers for surfing bring your swimming costumes and a towel wetsuits will be supplied although pupils can bring their own if they wish harnesses and helmets will be supplied for the abseiling we recommend pupils wear trainers astros or boots with a good grip for this activity each student will be guaranteed their 1st choice cost £28.00 quirky dolls no days 1 places 80 who is sid phillips answer he s a evil character in toy story sadly he damages toys but he s also pretty creative in that he re-invents new ones if you d like to create new types of dolls and you enjoy the challenges of drawing sewing collage and other art techniques then this is for you cost £2 no days 1or 2 places 25

paintballbig dunks paintballing big dunks with gas powered semi automatic paintball guns at big dunks paintball you will enjoy games in various scenarios you will be supplied with fresh fatigues full face safety goggles and enough paint balls to last each game before play you will be given safety instructions and rules from experienced and friendly marshals some games you might play consist of capture the flag siege the castle and search and destroy you will be expected to bring a packet lunch a spare change of clothes and a black bin bag to put any dirty clothes in this is suitable for both boys and girls in all years warning paintballs hurt when they hit you and you could get bruised cost £25 rock climbing no days 1 places 65 we intend to take a mini-bus of pupils and staff to two different climbing locations in cornwall devon over the 2 days pupils will need to wear suitable rough outdoor clothing bring a waterproof coat and have a pair of trainers astros or climbing shoes to wear when climbing we will provide all harnesses and helmets each day will start at budehaven school valley road car park at 9 am we will not be able to guarantee arrival back for buses in fact i expect that on both days we will be back between 5 and 7 pm pupils will need to make arrangements to be collected from school on our return cost £25 no days 2 places 14 stop frame animation a fun filled day focused on the production process of creating a stop frame animation pupils will be given topics that they can create as an animation for example pirates of the caribbean in 30 seconds lotr in 30 seconds etc remember to bring any props or scenery you wish to be in your animation cost free no days 1 places 30

collages come and make your version of the `human footprint create a life size body print and collage it with magazines and pictures bring loads of your own magazines and other materials for decoration cost free no days 1 places 30 twenty-twenty cricket an opportunity to partake in the newest most exciting form of cricket with coaching in the morning followed by a real match on bude cricket team s scenic pitch cost free no days 1 places 22 top gear challenge students will design and make a model vehicle that will undertake a series of `road tests you ll be working in pairs and be challenged to produce a winning design ­ logic and hard work a must cost free equestrian no days 1 places 20 two days of horse and pony care and riding lesson at st leonards polson the first morning you will be assigned a pony that you will be riding there will be sessions in horse and pony care and a riding lesson each day generally on the second day we will hold a mini competition which will be based around the ability of pupils present we can cater for complete beginners up to very experienced those with their own horses may be able to bring them by negotiation and have lessons tailored to your individual needs show jumping cross country or dressage hats are provided but you may bring your own kit cost £25 no days 1 or 2 places 25

fit fun and flexible we are offering a number of practical activities throughout the two days with students opting for a different activity per session the range will include hockey football tennis street surfing volleyball basketball rounders trampolining gymnastics yoga aerobics trim `n tone squash table tennis badminton softball and cricket on the second day we will heading off to the beach weather permitting for a variety of beach games and some lifesaving and water polo games with mrs bardsley qualified beach lifeguard and water polo expert we will finish off the beach visit with some `wacky team relay races before heading back to school for the final round of sporting choices in the afternoon the cost will be free students will need to come dressed in appropriate pe/sports clothing and proper trainers students will be given a bottle of water to keep refilled for the two days they will need to bring with them sunblock sun hats any inhalers/medication and are advised to leave all cost free gig rowing no days 1 places 120 working in partnership with bude s junior gig rowing coaches students have the opportunity to train at tamar lake the session will cover the basic techniques for gig rowing and top tips on how to improve technique for those who are no stranger to a gig boat we have two boats for the day so races between the two teams will also occur at the end of the day cost free arb trains no days 1 places 12 a chance to help out with the arb kids and work on a 2 day project based on trains there will be a musical and dt theme as well as the opportunity to visit the bodmin-wentford railway cost free no days 1 or 2 places 5

intro to marine biology what we will do experience some basic marine biology relating to the local environments available this includes identifying organisms that we find looking at zonation and its causes we will also look at feeding relationships we will explore the reasons for studying marine biology and some of the careers available we may have outside speakers some work may be carried out in the lab you must be prepared to walk to the nearby beaches wear appropriate foot wear and clothing for the beach and weather conditions provide packed lunch and snacks exhibit good behaviour work in teams to identify organisms and carry our survey work cost £5 no days 1 places 15 textiles workshop fashion accessories using computerised embroidery students will learn how to design an accessory how to use budehaven s most up to date textiles machinery how to put in a zip and other decorative techniques cost free no days 1 places 20 hair and beauty students will have opportunity to explore various approaches to how to use make up and create hairstyles for a day time look and an evening look they should bring in some make up and any accessories from home as well as any appliances such as tongs straighteners and hairdryers please can you ensure that these are all safety checked don t forget cleansers and tissues as well no permanent chemical processes will be used clothes to accompany each look may be brought in as there should be opportunities for photos some products will be provided cost free no days 1 places 30
