FOOTSTEP 1: SETTING OFF We selected avatars for our classes and began talking about Paul’s Walk. We introduced ourselves to our walking partners and presented the things we enjoy doing at school

FOOTSTEP 2: CREATING NEIGHBORHOOD MAPS Aiming to uncover children’s understanding of their neighborhood, we used different art materials and storytelling techniques to create our own unique and meaningful maps

FOOTSTEP 3: TAKING NEIGHBORHOOD WALKS Slowing down to explore our neighborhood with “fresh eyes” became a powerful opportunity for kindergarteners to develop the disposition to observe carefully and to make sense of little details that usually go unnoticed in the fast pace of everyday life

FOOTSTEP 4: LISTENING TO NEIGHBORS’ STORIES Young students learn by asking questions and Paul Salopek’s suggestions of asking open-ended questions were important in order to take good answers and listen to amazing stories

FOOTSTEP 5: Documenting the Everyday It might seem challenging for kindergarteners to understand complex concepts and interpret the deep insights of a topic. But, watching Paul Salopek’s videos carefully and taking time to listen to his “River of Culture” inspired our young students to explore their everyday through a “global” perspective and notice cultural elements that connect them with their walking partners from around the world

FOOTSTEP 6: LOOKING AHEAD Our last activity was to describe our future “Walks” towards understanding the world and ourselves. Inspired by their learning experiences in Out of Eden learn community, children found some really creative ways to present their ideas!!
