·06 june 14.11 6/13/11 11:11 am page 1 6 beach metro news tuesday june 14 2011 in my opinion beach bia changing with the times change is inevitable the degree and pace with which things are changing is staggering and for the most part we are not in control of those changes on our own behalf but instead are immersed in the changes that are going on around us we re simply required to adapt and adopt to keep up in the transition to the knowledge economy there was time and opportunity to make these shifts gradually when and as people and organizations were ready to make the leap the next transition however isn t as gradual nor is it nearly as optional the next transition is more than a social economy it s an organization of collective will never before has the power of the masses had such control and influence individuals as consumers are taking control of the direction of business the beach bia is undertaking a charles cameron chair beaches bia number of initiatives with this in mind our foray into social media started about two years ago we ve been steadily building an online community join thousands who `like www.facebook.com/beachbia and hundreds who `follow twitter.com thebeachbuddy and now we re looking to reinvent our online presence the current website at www.beachbia.com or www.beachesbia.com yes we re still using both is going through an overhaul not just the look and feel of the site but the technology behind it the information it provides and the interac tivity it will offer we re changing to suit the times we re excited to announce that the new website is coming this summer and we re looking forward to engaging with the beach community in a whole new way we ve also created a `great tenants committee this group is charged with identifying gaps in the business mix within the bia and finding ways to attract more of the kinds of businesses we need here the committee put out a survey asking beachers to weigh in on the current situation and provide input and suggestions to the team carole stimmell editor of beach metro news wrote a great article on the survey results in its last issue the results can be found by going to www.beachesbia.com/surveyresults conversations about our business area can be heard throughout the neighbourhood we re looking to host these and many other conversations through social media and our website more to come soon lastly we ve been making great strides toward achieving our core initiatives in 2008 the bia board embarked on a strategic planning exercise we identified approximately 150 initiatives that were either recurring in progress or under consideration with a small volunteer board and a staff of one person we knew it would be impossible to achieve everything we worked to define the strategic direction of the bia the mission and vision for the future with that we set out to establish 12 core initiatives to begin taking us there these included · developing the bia strategy · introducing an annual family day festival · eradicating graffiti throughout the bia · creating a shop the beach/shop local campaign · long-term urban design sponsorship plan · gateway markers and banners · utility box project · communication liaison program · new benches hanging planters · event participation and sponsorship · challenging outdated `beach-only by-laws · increasing the number of parking spots in the area this year with a larger board and our single staff role split between two people we re setting out to revisit our strategy and establish our core initiatives for the next few years we ll keep you posted as always we welcome your feedback and suggestions please feel free to contact us at execdirector@beachbia.com beach metro community news published by ward ways re public use of tennis courts kew gardens may 31 issue kew gardens tennis club kew is an active non-profit community tennis club catering to both young and old kew offers a number of activities and programs for juniors retirees and everyone in between we work very hard to keep our club affordable new members are encouraged the $125 one-time initiation fee is used for capital improvements such as the $30,000 resurfacing of our hard courts done in august 2010 after deducting the early bird discount the 2011 membership fees are $150 for adults and $90 for seniors for a 24 week season these fees which include hst ensure that our facilities courts nets fencing lights etc are maintained as well as contributing to our programming and administration and also include an $8 per member contribution to the ontario tennis association ota we are grateful to the city of toronto for its support of community clubs in addition to the four free public hours each week nonmembers are welcome to use our hard courts whenever they are empty this is most mornings and afternoons note for the first two weeks of july the ota uses all of our courts to run its ontario junior closed tennis tournament and for the remainder of july and august we run summer camps on weekdays as has been the case for many years although the city allows a non-member charge of up to $10 per time for using empty courts kew has chosen not to charge fees for using the hard courts there is substantial court time available for public use we would like mr beal and your readers to know that kew gardens has held two annual events for the past several years to raise money for two local charities to `give back to the community in addition we have made our courts available to glen ames school for many years and for the past few years a private school has also used our courts with no charge from kew please come down and play tennis we hope you will choose to join our club linda gregory president kew gardens tennis club with all due respect to mr beal i find his letter as it appears in your may 31 2011 paper quite frustrating i do however understand and appreciate his point of view the kew gardens tennis club of which i am not a member is a private membership-driven tennis organization similar to other private clubs on public property such as yacht clubs members fund repair clean maintain and operate them at no cost to the tax payer these clubs often adopt local causes and charities and fundraise for them and may also provide a summer job for local students these clubs have an annual membership fee and that fee combined with the requirement to pay an initiation produces the revenue they need to operate their facility at no cost to tax payers the kew gardens tennis club is a very good example of a community organization that works with local charities to help improve the quality of life in our neighbourhoods in fact this club has raised about $25,000 for community centre 55`s share-a-christmas program and by doing so has bought more food for hungry children than any other local club the balmy beach club and the local yacht clubs and ted reeve arena make contributions as well so rather than publicly criticising a good organization it may be better to speak to them and give them the respect they deserve which i believe would be reciprocated bob murdoch

to say that while i don t have much news about sturdy what i do have is mainly of an uplifting nature she is off on an iceberg tour with her latest amatory conquest an oatmeal therapist named donavan mellanby i met him when the happy couple was in town recently while donovan recuperated from injuries suffered during a slight disagreement with his loved one and while i had difficulty understanding him due to the battered condition of his head he seemed happy enough as they started out on their return trip i hope to hear from my old pal soon and i will pass along whatever news i have when it becomes available but now on to other news and by ginger i can tell you there is no shortage of interesting and informative tidbits a large crowd gathered recently at the shoreline to witness the annual return of the house cats from their winter quarters on the toronto islands ecstatic owners rushed forward to welcome their pets while brandishing their favourite toys and cushions but the felines clearly indicated that what they really wanted was food drink and a i chance to terrorize the family dog so it is comforting to note that things quickly returned to normal in news concerning matters of a more athletic nature i am pleased to report that plans are well underway for a croquet tournament to be held in september the affair will be held on the park grounds near the gardener s cottage which is only fitting since profits will be directed towards some aspect of the cottage operation still in the beach area i completed a rewarding stroll recently along its sandy banks and i am pleased to report that all is well in the land of gulls guys and girls insidious influences continue to be kept at bay in this delightful part of the city and may that ever be so i would like to take this occasion to say a few words in support of the nap this was a popular workplace custom back in more civilized times but now it seems to have fallen into neglect and even disfavour one of the few practitioners left are mothers of small children who assert with great emotion that the nap is not only good for their child s health but it also works wonders for the mother s well-being the custom was very popular around the 1920s with the advent of the busi nessman s lunch which featured meals of roast beef and mashed potatoes washed down by hogsheads of ale and lager extensive research on my part proved that such a lunch does indeed cause one to view things in a somewhat benevolent light but it also reduces work output as the day wears on the custom received a considerable boost during the second world war when it was learned that sir winston churchill frequently took time off from saving the world to have a little desk doze but sadly the custom once again appears to have fallen into disuse i realize that many of you out there will tell me that in these days of the open cubicles such a strategy is not feasible but i have thought of a way to circumvent that as well just take a pair of old sun glasses and paste a pair of ersatz eyeballs on them then stand against a wall with your eyes closed fold your arms in front of you in the classic pose that tells your fellow workers not to bother you when you are thinking then set your silent buzzer for 15 minutes place it in your shirt pocket and settle in for a quiet interlude and settle in to a stretch of hassle-free dozing feel free to use this advice because i do not charge for my brainstorms new theatre company premiering at the guild by sheila blinoff two years ago i was invited to join a group planning to stage classical theatre on the grounds of the guildwood park using the greek stage as a backdrop we call ourselves the guild festival theatre and hope to make this an annual event i had no idea how much work was involved in any production long before even thinking of auditioning the performers things like getting our not-for-profit status from revenue canada negotiating with city officials for use of the park meeting with politicians getting the guild neighbours on side and the bugbear of all arts groups raising funds because few productions can make it on ticket sales alone it s been a long two years but it is exciting and thrilling to be part of a creative group with a different focus from life here at beach metro now opening night is in sight under the direction of sten eirik we are presenting an open-air rendition of chekhov s masterpiece the cherry orchard this is the story of a family in crisis whose way of life is no longer sustainable in the face of social upheaval and others way we re hoping you will come to our first season the play runs through july on thursdays to sundays 8 p.m under the stars in this beautiful location on top of the scarborough bluffs or come lately about teenagers i need to read a lot about teenagers because i seem to have a total blank about how i was as a teenager with my parents teenagers seem to have morality on a sliding scale they can become outraged by injustices they hear in the evening news and yet helping themselves to their brother s clothes earphones or ipod for the day is par for the course one thing i do remember about being a teenager is how stupid we were and how badly we lied to cover up our stupidity in truth looking back my parents were incredibly kind not calling us out on every lie despite the fact our lies were completely ludicrous and the reasons for lying were so silly i remember the time my dad caught us smoking in our tree fort not exactly the types of behaviour legendary teen years are made of but hey it was the suburbs in the 70s we thought we were bad there were three of us in the tree fort and i was the only one with a parent that smoked i was holding a package of my dad s favourite brand of cigarettes with a lit cigarette in my hand and smoke coming out of my mouth my father coming up the ladder said who is smoking up here and i answered he is pointing to my buddy and neighbour and my dad believed me or at least appeared to teenagers today are just like we were really really dumb this story begins with a small fib my firstborn didn t want to go to school in fact he knew he didn t want to go to school on this particular monday on the friday preceding the monday in question he christine yerrill knew and told a fib to his teacher about why he would be away on monday as it turns out this story also has a sidekick which so many teenaged boy stories do the sidekick and my firstborn decided that instead of attending school on this particularly hot june day they would instead head out for a day of biking the plan was foolproof in their teenaged minds a little biking followed by some greasy fast food and complete freedom from parents teachers and anyone else that represented authority with the stealth of a covert operative he left the house at his normal time for school in a school-day disguise of shorts t-shirt and carrying his back pack it fooled me it is also important to note that we do talk to our kids a lot about making the right choices and understanding that they are responsible for the outcomes of their actions there are always consequences in life positive or negative most days i think these talks go in one ear and out the other so imagine if you can the illicit feeling of stolen freedom that they experienced in those first few minutes sneaking into their cold damp garages and pedaling out on their bikes enjoying the warming morning in the sunshine while all their school mates sat in stifling boring classrooms riding their bikes down the steep road wind in their face and the thrill of ill-gotten exhilarating freedom the problem with this type of adventure is that it is usually the small thing that trips you up in their case a small thing didn t trip them as much as threw them a gigantic pothole in the middle of that steep road that turned the wind in their face into a full speed flying face full of asphalt it was a big spill from their bicycles luckily they were not seriously hurt just badly scraped up my firstborn hobbled back to our home looking for a quiet place to clean up regroup and then reconnect with his sidekick for their adventure unfortunately i d decided to work from home that day and the look on my firstborn s face when he crossed the threshold and saw me was as my mother would say worth the price of admission i didn t know you were working from home he squeaked i didn t know you were skipping school i replied sometimes there are moments as a parent when there s nothing you can say or do that will make the punishment any more impactful than the consequences that have already occurred the scrapes and bruises were significant and there was no punishment i could envision that would be worse that living with those for the week that night as i checked on him in bed he said the words that every parent hopes to hear mom i don t think lying is worth it that karma thing always gets you and i realized that the sliding scale of the morality had just lined up www.easttorontovillage.com when you have flowers you will have butterflies cont d from page 17 plants in the back this allows today is the cost of dental care for those individuals and families who do not have dental expenses reimbursed by an employee benefits dental insurance plan major restorative dental treatment can be prohibitively expensive fortunately there are many approaches that can be taken to reduce significantly the cost of dental care consider the following list of practical and easy-toimplement suggestions floss remember 98 of all dental disease is preventable a sensible home care program including brushing flossing and mouth rinse will often save thousands of dollars in restorative dental expenses over a lifetime my patients have heard this line many times floss is the most inexpensive and best form of prevention around practise proper nutrition the importance of proper diet and all indicative of a problem waiting till the problem escalates only increases dental expenses exponentially discuss treatment options with your dentist there are many instances when a less costly treatment option can be pursued as an interim measure until such time as the ideal treatment can be undertaken discuss payment options with your dentist many dental offices offer payment plans to help patients ease the burden of dental expenses by spreading the cost over time the common thread in all of these suggestions is the importance of prevention you wouldn t consider making a major purchase
