Battle of the Sexes
By: Kelsey R.
Last week, Melba High School students participated in battle of the sexes. Battle of the sexes is a competition between the boys and girls in our school. Each day of the week last week, the high school had competitions between the boys and girls to see who would win. In addition to battle of the sexes, we had an assembly on Wednesday, May 11th. During the assembly, we had competitions between the boys and girls. The boys were in the the lead. Not only did we have competitions, but we also had a youth leader motivational speaker. His name was A’ric Jackson. He was hilarious and very motivating.. Kali Williams said, “I could listen to him for 8 hours and it’d never get boring”. That is very true. He was very funny, and I think everybody liked him. However, he was finished and we had one more competition before the day was over. Of course, the boys one that last competition for the day and they were ahead 7 points. The next day, Thursday, the girls had one more shot to win battle of the sexes. At last, the day was over. The boys finally won battle of the sexes this year. It was a fun week competing with each other. I am so glad that Melba High School decides to do battle of the sexes!
Mustang Football Preview
Next year's Melba Football is “going to be stinking awesome!” in the words of Coach Blaser. It will be a lot of hard work, but very fun. The offense will have some changes, so they can be solid. No one will get past their defense either. The coaches are going to be great. Mr. Dickard is an amazing coach. Some of this year's 9th graders that are playing football are: Colton Capps, Trey Wilson, Scott Martinez, Dakota Durbin, and William Baird. Even though some players may have left, many more players have come in. This year’s football team will have a great defense, and an outstanding offense as well. I can’t wait to watch, and I hope you will come watch and support them too.

Girls softball has been amazing this year! They had many memories that will never be forgotten. They played hard in their games and kicked butt in addition to their great season, they got the new field that coach Jamison has worked on getting for a while. The girl’s field skills have been amazing with: Sam Hyde as catcher, Jordan Worfield as pitcher, Andrea Dickard at 1st base, Michelle Riley at 2nd base, Mikayla Frost at shortstop, Jordan Rush at 3rd base, Megan Runkle at left field, Randi Romans at center field , and Haylee Williams at right field. The girls were ranked 1st going into districts, similarly they are ranked 1st heading into state. The girls state is in Black foot, and they are playing Friday
and Saturday. For the seniors state means a lot to them. The most winningest coach is from Bishop Kelly with 11 state wins however, Jamison has 10 state wins, and the girls would love to tie up the score. Let’s hope that Melba will bring home a state win.

US backing up Libya with arms for the IS fight
Published by: Glenn S.
The US and other world powers are backing up Libya with arms to fight the IS (Islamic State). Nevertheless the IS is a new and dangerous threat that needs to be taken care of. For this reason the US and other countries have funded weapons and are trying to help as much as possible. Nobody denies that if the IS isn’t taken care of that it will take over most of Libya, and if so, it will thrive and become a bigger threat than it already is. The IS is a major threat to Libya and Libya doesn’t have the means to defend themselves from the this terrorist group. The US and other countries are helping out a lot and are making a difference for Libya’s people.

What Not To Wear?
By: Jade L.
The end of the school year is just around the corner, and students everywhere appear to think since they lose their lockers, means they can lose their pants as well. Melba Jr. Sr. High has had a huge struggle in dress code throughout the past couple months. Boys have been wearing ‘muscle tanks’, and girls have been wearing short skirts, short shorts, ‘crop tops,’ and shirts with unexceptionally low neck lines. I feel that teachers are not addressing this particular case scenario appropriately.. Although the school year is getting shorter, it
does not mean our skirts have to be as well. Melba has a serious problem right now, and it needs to be addressed quickly.
By: Kate C., Kayla M., & Alaina F. The school year is almost over. There are many great things about summer. Camping is an extremely enjoyable and fun activity to do during summer. Packing everything you need will make it a great time, but forgetting to pack something can lead to a stressful time. In order to make sure you have everything you need, follow this checklist. Accessories: backpack, bandana, hiking boots, sunglasses, waterproof cover, waterproof gloves, widebrimmed rain hat. Clothing: fleece gloves, fleece jackets and vests, hiking socks, longsleeved shirts, swimsuits, rainwear, underwear, shortsleeved shirts, warm hat, warm pants, wicking long underwear. Equipment and Gear: alarm clock, axe, batteries, cameras, cell phone, collapsible water container, compression sack, extra nylon stuff sacks, lantern, matches/lighter, rainfly to cover tent, rope, sleeping bag, sit pads for underneath sleeping bags, stove and fuel, tent, tent stakes, video camera. Food and Cooking: aluminum foil, utensils, cook set and dishes, drinking cups, food, funnel, paper towels, plastic garbage bags, pot grabber, pot scrubber, dish towel, resealable plastic bags, reusable water bottles, water purifier, waterpurification tablets. Miscellaneous: healthy snacks, maps and directions, money, printouts of campsite reservations, travel journal. Packing all these things are sure to make for an amazing time. Be safe and have fun this summer! There are many camping opportunities and Idaho. How do you pick the best one? Here are some of the most popular campgrounds in Idaho. Firstly, we have Ponderosa State park. It’s filled with many ponderosa pines, which are truly beautiful trees. Ponderosa State park is located near McCall, Idaho next to Payette lake. Many people go to swim, boat, and fish. Next we have Hell’s Gate State park. This park is located near Lewiston, Idaho. Lewiston sits near the Snake River, which has popular fishing. Alturas Lake Inlet is also another popular place, and is personally one of my favorites. Alturas is located about 30 minutes outside of Stanley, Idaho. Stanley is also considered the most beautiful town in Idaho. It is located near the Salmon River and the Sawtooth mountain range. Lastly, we have Bear Lake State Park. Bear lake is on the border of Idaho and Utah. Bear lake has crystal blue water, and is a popular swimming, boating, and fishing site. There are many other camping places available throughout the state, but here are a few to help you kick off your adventure.
Summer camps are also a great way to spend a week of your summer. Camps are inspirational, enjoyable, and fun. Some camps are overnight some are just day camps, but they are fun either way. One fun camp to visit is located in Eagle. There’s no better way to blend the active nature of a game like tag with the technological functionality of infrared Arduino lasers! Campers will learn how to build these systems, create a laser tag game along with being active, building fortifications, and using teamwork to develop winning strategies not only for the technology, but for the game itself! The camp will last 5 days at $275, and ranges in age from 7 12th grade. Another fun camp to visit is an overnight camp not located in Idaho, but located in Ocean Park, Washington. Dunes Bible Camp, is a camp full of fun! There is swimming, water slide, night games, chapel, beach, crafts, campfires, snack shack, singing, devotions, new friends, great food, pool, prayer, and talent shows. There are four different opportunities at the camp, you can go to primary, junior, middle school, or high school camp. You can also go as a counselor or other help to the camp. Hope you have a good summer going to fun camps and retreats! For more information of registration go to https://www.dunesbiblecamp.com/ For Dunes Bible camp
Western Conference Finals
By: Andrew H.
To begin with, the Warriors struggled with the Blazers because of the injured Stephen Curry. He took just over 2 weeks of resting, and when he came back it was a slow process, but was definitely worth it. He won the MVP award twice in a row. He used this as confidence, and is hopefully going to prove it on the court against OKC. In the beginning, it was a close one for OKC, but after losing the first game by 22 points and the second by 4, Durant and Westbrook knew they had to do something. In the 3rd game, with no wins for the Thunder, Durant and Westbrook scored a total of 57 points. They carried the team like
usual, and lead them to success by winning later in the series. On May 16th Oklahoma City and Golden State are facing off once again.
Eastern Conference Finals
In the beginning of the series Miami pulled it out by 6 points. After that it went back and forth for them. Towards the end of the series Kyle Lowry went bananas and scored 42 points that helped them beat the Heat. Cleveland finished off the Hawks and also set the most 3 pointers in a game while doing it.The first game will be played on May 17th.
Where are you Headed this Summer?
By: Faith S.
Only seven more days until school is out! Many people have their family vacations lined up, while others plan on going swimming and sucking on popsicles. Summer is finally here. Where are you headed this summer? This summer Josh Leavitt is going to go to a family reunion in Oregon. He is also going rafting, and will spend some time at the family cabin in Garden Valley. One of his favorite summer memories was when they went to the Redwoods in California for a family reunion. They also went to the Oregon Coast, and they swam in the Ocean.
One of Faith S’s best memories was when she and her family went down to Deadwood Reservoir with her cousins. Their uncle took them on a long fourwheeler ride. After they got back, they were all black with dirt. She and her family also went rafting. When her dad was getting out of the raft, he fell into the water. He was soaked for the rest of the day. Kate C. plans on playing basketball all summer. She is going to be going to to California to play in a tournament and another one in Las Vegas. While they are down there, they are going to go to Disneyland. She says that her dad looks forward to swimming in the ocean and trying out his new Speedo. Quinton H. plans on hanging out with his cousin like he does every year. He will also be visiting Boston, MA sometime. Summer is going to be a blast wherever you go. Whether you are going to some fantastic place like Disneyland, or just hanging out with cousins, there is nothing like summer. Take a break from school and have some fun!
Girls Track (Highschool)
By: Ember S.
We are wrapping up the season and the last meet is state. I interviewed Mrs. Willis, the head track coach, on how she thought the season went, and how she thinks they will do at state. Mrs. Willis is a great track coach! She has been coaching for 23 years. In high school, She got a 4 year scholarship for track. She went to NNU for college and did track, her events were long jump, high jump, 400m, sprints, mile relay, and medley relay. Additionally, Mrs. Willis says “ I love coaching track because there is something for everyone to do and my athletes get to see their progress from week to week.” She says the track season has been outstanding and at state she says they will do amazing. Only 16 participants made it to state, and those athletes are Emma Clark going for 4 events, Mary Ellen Cossel 3 events, Kylhan Heritage 1 event, Mekenna Manzer 3, Kymra Richardson 2, Cheylah Volkers 2, Callie Young 1, Francisco Alvarez 1, Beau Bromgard 2, Christian Chavez 3, Seth Cowger 1, Cameron Williams2, Rylan Manzer 3, Brian Reyes 2, Jake Woodruff 4, and Michael Reiber 1 event.

Baseball (High school)
From High School to the Major Leagues
While the Melba High School varsity baseball team went to state on Saturday, let's take a look at the big leagues. My personal favorite team is the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are my favorite team because the first team Jackie Robinson played for was the Dodgers, and he is an amazing role model. Of course it was the Brooklyn Dodgers at the time, but it is still the same team today. Another amazing player from the Dodgers is Clayton Kershaw. Clayton Kershaw was born in Dallas, Texas on March 19, 1988. He attended school at Highland Park HS. He played baseball all through high school. In 2006 he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1st round (7th pick) of the amateur draft. He played for the Dodgers from 2008present. In 2008 his number was 54, but now plays as number 22 and has since 2009.
Clayton Kershaw is 28 years old, and he has already won three CY Young awards. His position is pitcher, and he is said to be one of the best pitchers on the planet. He throws and pitches left handed along with left handed batting. When pitching his height and power, its no problem. He is 6’ 4” and weighs 225lbs. His fastest pitch, which is a fourseam fastball, is 93 mph. His fastest slider is 88 mph, fastest curve is 74 mph, and fastest change, which he rarely throws, is 79 mph. He is an exceptional pitcher. In conclusion, Clayton Kershaw is an amazing pitcher playing for the LA Dodgers. His fastest pitch is 93 mph. He has always been one of the top picks for the first rounds and will continue to be. He is my favorite player on the Dodgers, and he will play baseball for many more years, as he is only 28 right now.

More 4-H Memories From Me to You
By: Josune J.
4H is a global network of youth organizations whose mission is "engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development". In addition to their mission statement, 4H has been g iving speaking, sociable, and community project opportunities to Idaho’s youth for over 100 years. Idaho’s 4H youth participate in: club meetings, community service projects, animal judging, animal work days, camps, amazing chances to come out of your shell, and making many friends. It also gives youth the chance to learn about responsibilities, the value of hard work, and it helps them save money for college. As a result of all of those benefits; kids are becoming better all around people. Many, many people participate in 4H Melba. Granted, little Melba isn’t very big, many students participate in it. One of those students is Zane Helm. He has been a member for many years; taking pigs to the Owyhee County Fair. He told me his favorite thing about 4H, and I’d like to share it from Zane to me to you! “Seeing my animals from when they were babies; to when they were big. Going back and looking at the pictures.” A better way to explain that; Zane enjoys watching all of his hard work, dedication, and time pay off in the end.
Hunting & Fishing
Clearwater Region Fish Stocking
By: Brayden C.
It’s time to take a road trip up to the Clearwater region. There are a ton of great fishing spots in addition to the great stocking there. The stocks there range from 250 fish to 6,000 fish. Furthermore, it sounds like a great place to look into for a great fishing trip. An interview with Ryan Banks, a man who works for the Idaho Fish and Game, reveals the best spots to go and the key details to fishing in that region. Ryan pointed out “the three best reservoirs to visit are Spring Valley Reservoir, Moose Creek Reservoir, and Elk Creek Reservoir.” Furthermore, he believes these place are best because of “... the beautiful scenery and that they are secluded.” He was also generous enough to share how to catch a variety of fish. He suggests “a jig and plastic worm for Largemouth Bass, a fly for Bluegills, and a sinker and worm for Rainbow Trout.” Ryan also states that “50,000 fish are put into the Clearwater region each year.” One last thing he shared was what time to go, He says “in the Spring at evening. That is when the wind calms down and the lake starts to stand still. The calm and peacefulness will bring out the fish.” The Clearwater region is a great place to fish. It sounds like it is the perfect time to go and take a fishing trip as well. In addition to the great fishing, don’t forget about the free fishing day on June 11th. Maybe it is time to pack your bags and take a weekend off to do some great fishing.
