CHILDREN A Belinda Abrianna Brown-Darko S ome women say that the only reason why they will not walk out of their marriages is for the sake of their child/ children. Although this may not be a good enough reason for staying in a marriage, but in my opinion, it is a self-less act regardless, especially if the women are able to bring the children up in a loving and caring environment. Marriage as some of you may well know is not a thing to be entered into lightly because it is an institution ordained by the Most High God. The bible says that marriage shows the relationship between Christ and the Church. (Ephesians 5) The bible goes on to say emphatically that God hates divorce. In Matthew 19 it reads, “The Pharisees also came 6

Children’s Corner unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he (Jesus) answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man (including married couples) put asunder. They say unto him, why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.” (Emphasis mine) I cannot get over the idea that the Pharisees would even think about asking such a question. Maybe the people in the days of Moses were divorcing their wives at the drop of a hat. Pretty much like what is going on today. For example, some couples claim that they are no longer compatible? What does that even mean? These days, some people are not even willing to work at their marriage at all. They make statements like, “I can’t take this anymore, I’m done,” and they throw in the towel and end up quitting their marriages just like 7 AND DIVORCE

p. 8

Children’s Corner they have been confessing. But these same people are working jobs that they do not like day in and day out and yet they do not quit their jobs and the sad part is that Christians are doing the same thing – quitting their marriages. Going back to the question Jesus was asked, He said it was not so from the beginning. Moses allowed it because of the hardness of their hearts. Now, of course I know that all situations are different. For example, the bible says that if the unbelieving spouse departs, let him depart…. (I Corinthians 7:15). I remember one day my sister told me about a friend who was thinking of divorcing her husband because he was cheating on her. “Well, she has a right to” that is what the bible says, I said. I will never forget my sister’s response. She said, yes, but there is a greater “law” – LOVE. Love you see covers a multitude of sin. Well, since my topic is Children and divorce, what effects does divorce have on some children? Some act up because of the conditions at home and these are three to five year olds I’m talking about. If they at that age (3-5yrs olds), go through all that, how much more those who are older. These children end up having a difficult time because some of them feeling that it is their fault a parent left. Some children think, well, if a daddy no longer loves mommy or vice versa, then, obviously they no longer love me. Again, if you are divorced, please do not 8 feel condemned. The Lord does not condemn you and neither do I. The bible says God hates divorce not the divorcee. It is important to differentiate between the two. Now if you are divorced and you have children, please do your children a big favor by not talking badly to them about the parent that left. As much as lies within you, live at peace with all men. They may no longer be your wife/husband but they are still the children’s parent. Some parents have this attitude, well; they (my children) are not the first to go through what they are going through: they will live. Yes, they will by the grace of God but at what expense? In some cases, children are asked to choose whom to live with. Can you imagine the feelings a child might be going through? Not only is he/she put in an awkward position but the feeling of betrayal for not choosing to live with the other parent. Let us take a look at a scenario where a child’s parents are divorced. We are going to assume that it is a nine year old girl and we are going to call her Amber. (Please bear in mind that this is a fictitious name and story). Amber had parents who had a loving relationship till things begun to turn sour at home. One day, after Amber got home from school, her parents called her and sat her down. “Amber darling”, daddy said, “You know we love you very much right?” “Yes I do daddy”, Amber replied wondering where that was leading to. “Well”, her daddy continues, “you see Amber, your mother and I are no longer going

to live in the same house, I am moving out, we are getting a divorce”. “Do you know what that means?” Of course she did, some of her friends at school had parents who were divorced. Now of course, at this point Amber is really confused. All kinds of things were going through her mind. I taught my parents loved me. I thought they loved each other. I thought we would always be a family unit. I thought… I thought I thought. This is too much for Amber and she breaks down and starts to cry. Little did Amber know that her parents who seemed to be affectionate with each other were only pretending that everything was alright. As soon as her back was turned, they would go back to bickering and insulting one another. “So does that mean that you don’t love me anymore? “Don’t cry Amber, we still love you” We still love each other; we just can’t live in the same house anymore. Now this adds to the confusion she is already experiencing. If they love one another, Amber reasoned, why the divorce? Despite all her fears and anxieties, Daddy leaves home and the next thing she knows her parents are really divorced; very soon, Amber who was a very sociable girl becomes withdrawn. in her class, starts hitting her classmates and sometimes for no reason at all. Most of the time, Amber is just straight up angry! Soon Mom announces that she is moving to another state to get married to an old boyfriend who is himself divorced and has three children of his own. So now Amber is not only being uprooted from her home, she is uprooted from her school to a new school where she does not know anyone and has an instant family. Although Amber is surrendered by lot of people, she feels very much alone. Where at one point she was the only child who had all the attention she wanted, now she has to come to compete for her mum’s attention. As if that is not enough, stepdad is not too keen having her around and her teachers are getting fed up with her behavior at school. At this point, her mother is really frustrated and decides to ship Amber off to live with her dad. Mind you her opinion of dad is not great because every chance Mommy got, she reminded Amber of how useless her dad was. So Amber arrives at Daddy’s home and guess what? Stepmom is not too thrilled to have her in her house. Her step brothers and sisters are not thrilled to have her at their house either. After a few weeks, Amber (an A student) grades begins to drop drastically. She is becoming increasing less attentive in class and very short-tempered. Infact this sweet little girl who was one of the best behaved 9 Amber who is sixteen years old by this time has no regard whatsoever for any kind of authority figure. Well, Amber decides after a few weeks that enough is enough. “I will be better off leaving by myself, at least it will not hurt too much if the people in my life who are supposed to love

me do not” she reasons. Amber waits till everybody had gone to sleep: she packs her bag, steals her mom’s money and runs away. Very soon, Amber is out of control and very rebellious and looking for love in all the wrong places. I could go on and on but I’m sure you catch my drift. Who knows what her life would be like had her parents remained married. ting a divorce because of them.  Do not put your child in a position where they have to take sides. Sometimes, spouses will give their children too much information about what caused the divorce. For example, a spouse might have had an affair. In my opinion, this should not be information given to the children especially if they are young. As much as you can, be positive around each other when your child is around. If you could remain friends that would even be better. Do not say insulting or mean things about the other parent to your child. This makes the child upset and in some cases they lose respect for the parent who is continuously being talked about negatively. Be involved in your child’s life. Do not just drop out of their lives as though they no longer matter. If you are the parent with visitation rights, please do not disappoint your child by standing them up. Support your child financially and emotionally. Make it a point to attend important milestones in their lives. Parents, please keep the lines of communication open. Do not send messages back and forth through your child. Do not ask your child/children questions about each other’s private lives. Sometimes I think some of us give up too quickly on our marriages for selfish reasons. “I am not happy” “We are no longer compatible” etc. etc. Am I saying there are no challenges in marriages? Of course not! Just do not throw your hands up in the air like you really do not care. Of course I understand that sometimes one party wants out and although the other party doesn’t, he or she has no other choice than to grant the divorce to the party who wants out. Fair enough, in such a case, there is really nothing that the other party can do. But I pray that you will both fight for your marriage and ask God to help you make it work.     But, if you are divorced, I hope the tips listed below will be helpful to you.   TIPS   Assure your child that you love them.  Do not bring people you may be involved with home to meet your children. However, should you decide to remarry, please introduce the person to your children and have them know them first. Please do not label your children by comparing them to their mother/father. Do not tell them things like “you are no good – you will end up like your mother/father.  It is my prayer that those of who are contemplating divorce will turn their marriages over to God (Please read the previous edition of this magazine “Marriage Can be Easy” by Prophetess Choice Nwachuku Ph.D. in the marriage corner). I pray that God will bind you with cords that cannot be broken in Jesus name, amen. Remember that nothing can separate you from the love of God. God loves you with an everlasting love! O ne day, some years ago, I found myself at the grocery store to get some shopping done. I went aisle by aisle picking up all types of delicious snacks and goodies…and fruits and veggies as well (wink wink). Finally, as I approached the counter to pay for my items, I heard the word matches. Matches? I thought to myself. I had no need for matches. No one in my family smokes and our house is run with electricity not gas. So I was able to talk myself out of what God placed in my heart. When I got home, my mother was busy in the kitchen and as I started to offload my purchases, she looked at me and said, “Oh…I wish I called you to pick up some matches for me. I really need them.” WHAT?!?!? SHE You see, the incredible NEEDED MATCHES?!? thing about God is The same matchthat He knows es God dropped EVERYTHING while in my heart to we as humans only pick up and I igknow in part. nored it. Can you imagine how terrible I felt, explaining to her how God hinted to me to pick up matches but because it did not make sense to me, I talked myself out of it. My “knowledge” and “reasoning” robbed my mother of her blessing and myself of a testimony. You see, the incredible thing about God is that He knows EVERYTHING while we as humans only know in part. Even the smartest person on Earth possesses just a mustard seed of knowledge compared to our God. Sometimes, God will give us an instruction that makes absolutely no sense to us as human beings because we cannot see the entire picture and we depend on our intellect instead; it is left to us to obey and wait for God to reveal the purpose. As Christians, we can trust that even when an instruction sounds like nonsense, at the end, God must always have the glory! Let’s take a look at a few examples of when God’s instructions made no sense but ultimately created an opportunity to display God’s glory and 13 Pastor Kathleen Mbanefo blessings! We have all heard the story of how the Pharaoh of Egypt held the Israelites in captivity and slavery for many years I presume. Despite Moses’ warnings and God’s terrible plagues against the land of Egypt, Pharaoh refused to let them go until the final plague (death of all the firstborn in Egypt) struck and claimed the life of his own son. Out of anger, Pharaoh let the Israelites go. Suddenly, Pharaoh changed his mind and decided to pursue the Israelites. At this point, the Israelites had been pushed to the very edge of the Red Sea with no other means to escape. God instructed Moses to raise his staff over the sea and then God instructed Moses to divide the water. Can you im- to raise his staff over agine watching the sea and then to dithis great body of vide the water. Can water splitting in you imagine this great half, providing body of water splitting dry land for the in half, providing dry Israelites to cross to safety? Is that land for the Israelites to cross to safety? not an incredible

miracle to behold? And to think: all it took was for Moses to obey God’s simple (yet odd) instructions? Before I go further, let’s stop and think for a second. Why did Pharaoh change his mind after letting millions of Israelite slaves go? What happened that made him want to pursue them? Take a look at Exodus 14:3-4. It states “…Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are confused. They are trapped in the wilderness!’ And once again, I will harden Pharaoh’s heart and he will chase after you. I have planned this in order to display my glory through Pharaoh and his whole army. After this, the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord!” You see, God planned for this to happen. The Israelites had no idea that while they were on their way to freedom, Pharaoh had changes his mind to pursue them. Right at the brink of what they thought would be their deaths, God made a way through an instruction that made no logical sense…all so that He could take the glory! In Joshua 6, we see that the Israelites were in yet another dilemma. The Lord had given the land of Jericho, its king and warriors to the Israelites…but there was a big problem. The entire city was surrounded by a large wall which prevented people from entering or leaving the city. Would you believe what God instructed them to do? Joshua 6:3-5 says, “You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days…on the seventh day, you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as long as they can. Then CAN YOU BELIEVE the walls of the town will collapse THAT? Just march around the wall, yell and the people can charge and then the walls straight into the (made out of cement town.” CAN YOU and brick) will come BELIEVE THAT? tumbling down? Just march 14 around the wall, yell and then the walls (made out of cement and brick) will come tumbling down? Humanly speaking, that is impossible! But of course, with God, any and ALL things are possible! In Matthew 17:24-27, Jesus and His disciples entered into the town of Capernaum. A tax collector approached Peter and asked if Jesus pays the tax for the Temple. Peter went back to approach Jesus about it, however before he could even speak, Jesus already knew what he would ask. Trust Jesus to perform a miracle (even when all He needed to do was take money out of their He He asked Peter to go treasury). down to the lake and asked Peter to go down to the lake to open the mouth of and to open the the first fish he mouth of the first caught. Guess what fish he caught. was in the mouth of Guess what was in the mouth of that that fish? fish? Go ahead and guess….A SILVER COIN! Would you believe that the coin was enough to pay for Jesus and Peter’s tax? Now, to you and I, this made no sense whatsoever. How did Jesus know that the first fish Peter caught would have money in its mouth? How did that particular fish know that Peter needed it in order to pay their taxes? Honestly speaking, if I was Peter and Jesus commanded me to go fishing to pay our taxes, I would have been seriously confused! You see, even though Jesus’ instruction made no logical sense, God provided just what they needed. Peter would have indeed missed being part of a miracle if he had disobeyed Jesus. The bible is full of different examples of when God gave an instruction that made absolutely no sense. But the bottom line is that, we as humans are limited in our thinking. Why not believe and trust in God who knows and sees all things, who knows the end from the beginning? Yes, sometimes His instructions may

not make “…(A)cknowledge that I sense, but as am a sinner and ask for you can see forgiveness, (B)eleive from all three examples, a that Jesus Christ came miracle hap- to die for me and pened every (C)onfess that Jesus is time. To my Lord and Savior.” some people, something as simple as receiving salvation makes no sense. I can imagine someone saying to themselves, “All I have to do to be saved is to (A) cknowledge that I am a sinner and ask for forgiveness, (B)elieve that Jesus Christ came to die for me and (C)onfess that Jesus is my Lord and Savior…. and that’s it?” Yes!!! Truly that’s it! It’s as easy as A-B-C! You don’t have to pay anything or pray a long, drawn out prayer. It’s just that simple! Being a Christian simply means obeying instructions from God that may seem stupid or makes no sense to you or others. Maybe God is instructing or urging you to sit beside and say hello to the kid in your class that seems antisocial. You never know, he or she might have planned to commit suicide had it not been for your speaking to them that day. Perhaps you have $20 and plan to go to the movies but God lays it in your heart to give it to the homeless woman sitting outside of the theater…she may not have eaten for days. Maybe you are sleeping and God urges you to wake up and pray for someone you may (or may not) know; your intervention may avert danger or harm that was coming that person’s way. So the next time God gives you a command, always keep in mind that God must ALWAYS take the glory, even in what seems to be non- sense. Pastor Kathleen C.
