affects schedules mackenzie donovan news editor with the scott county school district 2 school board s recent decision to change to semesters one of the many departments affected will be the scottsburg high school guidance department it s an easier scheduling job for guidance it doesn t change our job other than accommodating failing students and students who need remediation in the trimester scheduling we could accommodate students who fail a class the very next trimester in most cases with the semesters we ll have to explore other options said counselor dancie colson junior aleesha simone said i think it would be harder to make up classes because there isn t another part a of a class offered colson said this year we ve had to use some internet courses i expect we ll have to use more internet courses second semester apex is a good thing to have in this situation when current 8th graders freshmen sophomores and juniors scheduled courses for next year all of them signed up for 15 credits the semester schedule only has room for 14 credits we took out all of the third trimester courses like third trimester band third trimester entrepreneurship third trimester publications etc classes that had low enrollment will be dropped this dropped most everyone down to 14 classes students who still have 15 courses we ll either pick out their classes by hand or let the computer kick out the class that won t schedule colson said i feel like semesters are going to be harder because they re longer i think trimesters are more compatible with my schedule said simone colson said we ll be creative and take care of the kids photo by trent west photo provided by debby wilson mrs debby wilson far left and mr terry huffer retire after teaching a combined 70 years 70 i bid thee adieu shs the last four years of high school have been interesting to say the least a lot of times when people write these senior editorials they say i hate this school i m so glad i m leaving but i m not going to do that as cliché as it might sound i ve really enjoyed my time here at scottsburg high school for the most part i ve made a lot of good friends and learned a lot from some not all of the teachers is it my fault i m an optimist it has been difficult to write this article this is my last chance to tell the high school what i liked during the past four years and what i didn t i would list all my friends that helped me along the way and teachers that encouraged and so long and farewell jordyn croasdell staff writer just like many little pre-teen girls my dreams of high school were nothing short of a relished fantasy i had dreams of being a proud warriorette on the basketball team singing my way to fame in the choir and maybe even having the opportunity to become homecoming or prom queen to say the least absolutely none of these things have happened though my dreams fell short of reality i wouldn t have had my high school experience any other way high school is definitely what you make it so don t let anyone else tell you otherwise i ll admit i ve done much complaining and whining about how much i can t stand shs but i guess that is my own fault for choosing to see things that way this is how my high school story really turned out i hurt my back my freshman year and that ended my bright basketball future i ended up a swimmer which was great while it lasted i also played girls soccer and had more fun building a successful team with those girls than i could have imagined i never got to be queen but i was homecoming princess my freshman year which was somewhat of a fairytale things seemed breezy my first two years but then education hit hard when american studies came along and i loved every minute of it i also became part of a girls bible study and have made beautiful friendships god has been working in incredible ways in my life starting out as early as high school and i am filled with joy to say that it is just the beginning i can t say i will miss everything here at shs but i will miss some teachers and the incredible friends that have invested in me along the way i m checking out a year early but i hope i have left some kind of positive mark here at scottsburg high school i hope to travel the world and see and experience as many things as i can but being honest with myself i can t forget my journey began in scottsburg as in the words of my dearest friend it s been real and it s been fun but it ain t been real fun well maybe just a little so long and farewell scottsburg high school i have accomplished all of my school year goals congratulations i guess even though i am ready to move on to college i know that i will miss this school and the people in it to the friends who gave me a ride home and were there for me when i needed someone who would listen and even the people who insulted my memories will last forever cyndll hargis staff writer i can t believe it s almost over i mean i can t believe high school is almost over for me after june 17 i will probably never step foot into scottsburg high school again it s been a good four years here i have some really good memories i have made some awesome friends here i have met some people that have made lasting impressions on me i ve also learned some things about myself however i am ready for it to be over i m tired of high school even though i m glad that it s almost over i m kind of sad too when i graduate i m leaving behind a few important people first there s my boyfriend jamie who will be a junior next year i have gotten used to seeing him every day next year that s over i m also leaving behind some very close friends who are also underclassmen it s weird to think that after june 10 i will no longer have to wake up at 7 a.m anymore to get ready for school yes i still have four years of an education to work through but my mom keeps telling me that i will be surprised at how easy college is compared to high school i guess i believe her even though i m glad that i m almost done just another week of school here it s also kind of weird during my sophomore year i started wondering when my time here would next year i plan to do even better how is that be over i was ready for it to end then to the underclassmen i say don t give up you will get through i had some pretty hard times here there will also be times when you will wonder when it will be over for those of you who don t know i m going to ius to become an english teacher i don t know if i will make it out there i can only hope and pray that i do for the hard times though i have my friends my family and my boyfriend i hate goodbyes i always have however this is one goodbye that i m ready for yes i will probably cry at graduation actually there s no probably about it but that s to be expected i guess saying goodbye isn t that hard life goes on after graduation so i guess i should probably say it now goodbye scottsburg high school it s been a good four years by taking 6 things off this year s list

opinion 6.3.11 you say goodbye and i say hello to my future laura rogers editor-in-chief 3 high school has certainly been a wonderful journey but in every journey there are pot holes along the way back-stabbing friends dead-end relationships crazy teachers and strict principals were all over the place at scottsburg high they affected my life every day but i can say that i over came the failed friendships relationships and all the hard assignments now i am ready to move on so saying goodbye won t be difficult for me because i know there is a brighter future out there just waiting for me to find it high school had some good moments too band was always there for me my freshman year i immediately made over 100 new friends before i even got to high school because of summer marching newspaper has shown me what i want to do in life and i love writing and designing pages it has made one of the biggest impacts in my high school career drama has allowed my mind to think outside the box drama really helped with a lot of other things in high school like not being afraid of being different and doing completely random stuff she there are some pretty awesome teachers that also helped me through mr johnston and mr young from band showed me how to take risks and become a greater leader mrs jerrell gave me the chance to be that leader and become news editor my first year of newspaper and editor-inchief this year also mrs jerrell put me in situations to make decisions that will benefit the entire group rather than just me mrs jenkins has not only been my teacher but also a very close friend i love her and her family as if they were a part of my own there is also my actual family to thank they came to every band contest every drama play and drove me all the way to newspaper camp they have worked just as much if not more than me during my entire school career they are to thank the most for my success during high school they have taught even more than school could ever teach me high school has been a grand journey and i wouldn t take one second of it back yeah i have made mistakes but it is because of those mistakes that i can move on and learn from them i don t thank the school but i thank the people who have made a large impact in my life i was meant to cross paths with the people here at scottsburg high school and it has truly blessed me now i am completely ready to get out of here scottsburg inspired me cheyenne mcintosh opinion columnist jordyn croasdell staff writer should students take a year off before college mackenzie donovan news editor said shesaid graduation is practically here and seniors are fighting senioritis harder than ever many have made up their minds about whether or not they are going to college for me taking a year off before college is going to majorly shape the course of the rest of my life this might not be for everyone but taking a year off can be a great time for high school graduates to better prepare themselves for life as well as further education i am going to the mission field for six months and this is going to be a life-changing experience i m pretty confident it will help develop me into the person i will be for the rest of my life as i contribute to the world in my hopeful career objective of becoming a nurse my case is rather unique though most students who take a year off will most likely be doing it to work and save up money for college this is a very wise decision the extra time will not only allow you to earn the cash as well as earn you the time you need to figure out for sure where you want to go to college i am thrilled to be taking a year off to experience a different world than i have ever known here in scottsburg a year will be great to take a break from studies and to focus on something i m passionate about i feel it will make me even more excited to jump into college when the next fall comes around sometimes it is not only a desirable thing for students to do but it can also be a very smart choice to make it just depends on who you are each situation is unique taking a year off after high school is every student s secret dream we all love the thought that after 13 years of school we can take an extended break from school before we begin the journey to our career i m no different i would love to take a year off and do nothing but let s face it a year off won t be like a carefree summer most parents aren t going to like the idea i know mine wouldn t this might make it necessary to get a job move out or both besides that doing nothing for a year might make a person lazy or lazier this could make it difficult to get back into the routine of schoolwork starting college the same year you graduate has many benefits the things you ve learned in high school more specifically your senior year are still fresh in your mind at least i hope so also you ll be starting as a freshman in college with people who are your age this offers more of a sense of camaraderie something else to consider is that taking a year off means starting your life a year later i am a firm believer in the difference between a job and a career a career is something you want to do can make a living on and will do for a good portion of your life that is what everyone should strive for a career i don t see the point in waiting i want to be ready to start my career in four years not five everyone has a decision to make about what they re going to do after high school when you make this decision you should weigh the pros and cons of each option this decision could greatly affect the rest of your life both positively and negatively i ve always wondered what i would say in my senior editorial you read these things every year and each time it s someone complaining about how they hated this town and couldn`t wait to leave i ve always thought it was funny that the really bitter graduates can almost always be found in the aisles of wal-mart now don t get me wrong i ve had some really awful memories in scottsburg as a kid i had bushy curly hair and glasses i may as well have had a target on my back to all the school yard bullies oh wait a second you ve all probably dropped out at this point nevermind and middle school that was a nightmare but the thing is just because you had some bad times doesn t mean you can be a bitter jerk all the time you obviously must have had some good times otherwise you d have nothing to compare the bad times to and they d just be times i ve made some really good memories in this town i ve met people and had opportunities that have completely altered my life as terrible as elementary school was my best friend is still that girl i met by the water fountain in fourth grade middle school introduced me to newspaper and obviously that part of my life is stronger than ever high school is the same way yeah there were some lunches that i had no one to sit with but there were also some dances where i danced with anyone and everyone with a pair of feet some of you knew me for years and never remembered my name others complete strangers came out of nowhere to thank me for something i had written there were some staff members that i felt invisible to but there were many others willing to be people not drones mrs gibson wrote `love on post-it notes silently supporting me mrs duvall always made room for me in her office full of love and encouragement mikel and connie laughed at my jokes mrs wells who suggested some great reads was always eager to give me a good kick in the butt to turn a paper in on time mrs jerrell listened to every rant with a smile and tolerated all my oxford commas to these people my family and my close friends i cannot give thanks enough they re the reason i survived scottsburg in closing i would like to thank shs and scottsburg for all the tears and furious rants it inspired you made me stronger i would also like to thank all the great people in this town even the jerk who forced me to swallow a rock in third grade you made me want to change the world.

8 hot reviews logan wells sport columnist arts&entertainment 6.3.11 a must see for the modern family show the writers do an amazing job of combining three separate story lines and bringing them all together so much comedy and plot is squeezed in during a short 30 minute period but it works extremely well the three families seem to fit nearly every stereotype of family there is there is the middle aged couple with the over-bearing mother and dad trying too hard to be cool the slightly add little brother and extremely social and moody older sister along with the little noticed middle child there is the older man food shows, and movies now through two full seasons the television show modern family has burst onto the scene as the season s best new comedy show the show airs on wednesday s at 9 p.m on abc modern family combines understated one-liners as well as hilarious slap-stick humor to paint an extremely funny but eerily truthful portrait of what constitutes a family the story line follows three individual families who are all a part of one larger family throughout each married to an extremely attractive and much younger latino woman with her young too smart for his own good son and finally there is the gay couple with an adopted child from vietnam one being extremely flamboyant adding numerous burst of laughter throughout the writing borderlines on offensive at points but never crosses the line stopping right at hilarity as opposed to distasteful a clever telling and overall very funny experience makes modern family a must see give me freedom or give me death preferably freedom gavin guthrie senior editorial shelby hale sports editor it s a pirate s life for me the viewer can experience the whole package of the movie s effects the story line was filled with much action and even a hint of a love story the movie followed the same kind of story line like the past movies in its series but the love story of will and elizabeth was not in this film viewers are still left wondering what happened to them the film was full of many unexpected outcomes and was very intense at times there could be a fifth film in this series but at the end of the movie the viewer was not left with as many questions as they were faced with after the third overall it was a great movie and i would give it two thumbs up join johnny depp penélope cruz and geoffery rush on a brand new pirates journey to find the fountain of youth photo by shelby hale chuy s creates a splash of fun and flavor bailey couch staff writer on friday may 20 the fourth pirates of the caribbean on stranger tides came out the movie was full of intense fighting as captain jack sparrow portrayed by johnny depp and his crew embark on a dangerous mission full of mermaids and an ancient sailor named blackbeard to find the fountain of youth the movie started with sparrow being his tricky self saving gibbs from being tried guilty and hung but like many of sparrow s attempts it leaves him with more trouble in the long run with barbossa and angelica played by penélope cruz the effects and the action of the movie grabbed the viewers attention and the whole movie can be viewed in 3-d so that if you want flavorful mexican food at a low price with a fun atmosphere then chuy s mexican restaurant is the perfect place for you chuy s is located between cheddar s and i-65 off veterans parkway with easy accessibility and prices comparable to those of restaurants like applebee s and ruby tuesday chuy s has definitely made a splash with an extensive menu including everything from tacos to green chile fried chicken you find it difficult to decide what to get when i went i got the chuy s like plate which is tacos with chile con queso and guacamole the taco was pretty good but the queso was awesome it was kind of spicy but definitely delicious my dad went with me and he got the fajitas and was very pleased with them as well this tex-mex restaurant not only has great food but a crazy fun atmosphere the outside of the building is average looking but once inside you realize that this isn t your average mexican restaurant there are things from bumpers to abstract art on the walls there is one room where the ceiling is entirely covered with hub caps throughout the restaurant there are also subtle hints of elvis presley memorabilia there are even multiple dishes on the menu named after him the service there was also very good and the servers were all very well trained overall i really liked chuy s not just because of the good food but because of the service and the atmosphere as well i would definitely recommend this place chuy s has a thumbs up from me chuy s mexican restaurant that recently opened on veterans parkway features a wide menu and fun atmosphere becoming a freer place this fact is obvious when we see people pursuing more democratic open societies as shown in the past months in the arab world but as the world moves on and society progresses freedom starts to seep into all aspects of life particularly i think the idea of schooling as my experiences with shs have shown is moving along a more positive open path i ve always believed that school hasn t been a free place from the importance placed on grades and tests to the mere idea that you should have to ask another human being if you can go to the bathroom school has at times been very dehumanizing we as a society have gotten the nasty idea into our heads that school equals learning to me school has instead been constraining things are changing for the better however while it remains to be seen how successful new tech will be in the long term the idea behind the school is a step towards a better school environment students should be allowed to have a say in school policy students should be allowed to pursue their own interests students should be given an opportunity to simply engage with other students in a setting that promotes cooperation and discussion this change is happening and technology is one of the main catalysts technology has drastically changed both how students learn and communicate it seems that shs has realized and in some degree accepted this idea with the opening of new tech it s not that my time here at shs has been horrible the school really is full of wonderful teachers and students in my eyes the problem has always been that the school seems more interested with babysitting than with producing thinking citizens even though it may be difficult to see at times the world is becoming more and more interconnected and free it just seems that if the world is embracing freedom why shouldn t the places where we learn do so as well luckily for the future students of shs it seems that the school is moving along this path known for our 6.3.11 sports logan wells sport columnist 9 mark your calendar team comes together beginning to find their stride the scottsburg warrior s golf team has begun to address their problem of consistent play the team has had five players steadily improve their scores with many of them shooting in the low 40s and even breaking the 40 mark on several occasions i ve been really happy with how all the guys have stepped up as the season has gone on said coach john gullion almost everyone has shot their best scores late in the year a big advantage for the team has also been its depth the team has still had a few problems with consistency but have been able to have members lower on the team step up at the right times and fill the hole we still need to work on our consistency a little [individually but as a team we are playing pretty well said junior jerel taylor this play led to an outstanding showing at the conference meet as the team finished second only to state ranked brownstown for the second year in a row senior andy gladden reigned as conference champion defeating the entire field senior andy densford missed making the allconference team by one stroke a year after missing it by two strokes however his score was good enough for honorable mention and was key in helping the team to their second place finish according to several members of the team the warriors feel they can piggyback on their strong outing at conference and carry that success over to sectionals the team hopes to shoot their lowest score of the season at sectionals and gladden hopes consider myself a savvy gamer no matter the genre i ve played and enjoyed games of all stripes some might even say i m pretty proficient at certain types of games however when i was asked to play a sports game and give my impressions i came to a horrible conclusion i am the single worst sports game player in the history of the video gaming medium since football is the game of champions a friend let me borrow madden nfl 10 one of the more recent games in the highly successful franchise the problem is i know absolutely nothing about sports in real life still i thought i could work my way through the mechanics of madden and hopefully even learn about the real sport in the process the exact opposite happened madden s learning curve is a vertical cliff that bends in on itself i still don t even know who i was controlling in the game was it the quarterback the whole team i am utterly flabbergasted even though i only played one sports games i have the feeling that games simulating other sports are equally as difficult this isn t a knock against sports gaming as i m sure that people who are familiar with sports can appreciate the games far more it just seems that sports games can be very difficult for non-sports fans to get into for those who have never played a game of this type and wish to do so i d recommend finding a friend who can show you the ropes while madden had a training mode i found that it did a very poor job introducing newcomers to the rules and mechanics of the game i m sure that if i had a friend helping out namely a certain sports columnist i would have had far more fun with the game as it stands however i believe i ll just stick to games with guns and explosions 812 752-9272 open 11 am 11 pm 6 days a week closed mondays what has been your 10 logan wells and shelby hale staff writers sports well this year but we ended up rising over the expectations we had for the season said coach ken bracey the warriors had a strong end of the season with a first place tie with brownstown at the conference meet and their second place finish at sectionals only losing to jeffersonville we scored 102 points at sectionals and it is the most scottsburg has scored in a long time at conference we probably could have done a little better since michael icenogle was not 100 percent and logan wells was still recovering from being sick with a fever the day before said bracey at the track sectional meet matthew icenogle placed first holding onto his undefeated title in the 110 and 300 hurdles chris lane also won the 100 meter and 200 meter dash lane has had a winning season as well only losing to a madison runner once steven spencer ran his personal best at sectionals and qualified to run the 800 meter run in the regionals at the regional meet eight of the boys made it out of sectionals to compete out of the eight two of the runners placed high enough to go to state matthew icenogle in the 300 meter hurdles and chris lane in the 200 meter dash it feels great to know all of your hard work pays off and to know that your childhood dream has come true this week before state i am going through my coach s intense training program 300 meter repeats said lane the warriors have ended the season rising higher than their expectations 6.3.11 track season continues beyond regionals the warriorette s track team continued to improve all season by the end of the year the team was achieving personal records nearly every meet these great performances led to very solid performances at both conference and sectionals as the team finished fourth in both nine girls had performances good enough at sectionals to advance on to the bloomington north regional two relay teams advanced as well and the night brought about several more personal records we were getting to the point by the end of the year where we were [getting personal records every meet and that was the same at regionals said coach leslie carter the biggest race of the night came from sophomore morgan mcneely after advancing to the regional in the 100 and 200 meter dashes winning the 100 at sectionals she entered regionals seeded to advance at regionals she finished fourth in the 100 one spot from qualifying for state but in the 200 she finished second good enough to advance to the ihsaa state championships on june 4 i worked really hard all year and it s good to have that pay off said mcneely making the best of their season is what the warriors have done this year they have been working hard since early february when they started to condition the team wanted to get right to work and not waste any time and that is exactly what they did after losing many points from graduated seniors we did not think that we would do as symantha norton 11 throws her second shot for the batesville sectional in the first round the team struggled throughout the season however it was understandable as head coach vanessa read explained we didn t have half of our practices throughout the season to play or practice due to the weather and it clearly affected our play the team did have upsides throughout the season as they defeated austin trinity lutheran and crothersville showing signs of life the team also has great hope for optimism as it returns all starters next season the team did feel some accomplishment in the games where their hard work did pay off read said the wins were definitely the high point of the season read said of next year s potential since we only have one senior we will return a lot of talent and have a lot more experience as a team we athletically and talent wise have the ability to compete right now we just made mental mistakes that got us nearly every game i think next year s team will be great they should do very well said senior taylor hardin as far as the players going into next year all starters are returning and the team should have up to 8 seniors coach read said the message to the team will be to gain more focus and competitive resolve this year it seemed we just didn t have the competitive edge to finish every play the players are resilient and looking ahead to the next season brittany williams said we are going to be a 6.3.11 logan wells staff writer sports though the record doesn t indicate it the scottsburg warriors baseball team has been playing very well as of late overall the warriors ended the regular season at 6-14 and 2-7 in conference play however they won three of their last four games to catch fire before sectionals it was thought before the season started that pitching would be an issue but as the team began playing games the opposite was true the pitching was solid but the hitting which was anticipated to be a strength was lacking in the last few games of the season however the bats have come alive and the pitching has held true sophomore trevor tuttorow and junior randy richey have led the pitching staff tuttorow throwing two one hitters 11 and richey throwing a three hitter we re playing fairly well said coach ben bottorff the guys have finally bought into that hitting is a team thing not just an individual our pitching took a dip about midway through the season but has been pretty solid since spring showers proved to be an obstacle for the team as the field was damaged and the warriors were restricted to the batting cages for three weeks without field action this even took its toll on the sectional the team was supposed to play batesville on may 26 but the game was postponed due to weather the lay off did not seem to affect the warriors as they went on to win the game and advance in the tournament however they met defeat in the next game bringing an end to their season spring showers dampen play randy richey 11 runs from his position to catch a fly ball during a drill after coach brian roberts took over the team they suffered their only two losses of the season the first came at the hands of a very tough silver creek team and the second to austin senior sarah hutton said the hardest point during the season was definitely losing our coach brent walker and the time right after but we all held together and still pulled out an amazing tennis season the team did pull through with an amazing season the team regained the title of sectional champions again they had in 2008 holly stewart said winning sectionals senior year was the perfect end to an amazing high school tennis career it gave me school pride and brought all the girls even closer the sectional was filled with drama as it was neck and neck throughout the match when the match neared the end all eyes were on sarah hutton as scottsburg dueled it out with their archrivals the austin eagles hutton said of winning sectionals it was pretty snazzy there was a lot of pressure because we were facing our rivals austin and it was 2-2 and down to me when i won everyone stormed the court and lifted me it was an amazing way to end the season the sectional victory was great for the team and for the seniors who had not felt the excitement of a sectional victory since freshman year it was an especially great way to end their high school careers the seniors had a great season overcame controversy together and came through it stronger producing the most successful season in the history of shs girls tennis stewart said what i will remember most from this season is the first truck escort around town the siren going off every time coach took the keys out of the ignition and our superstitions such as going to westwood golf course before all of our final matches after the sectional victory the team advanced to regional where after the first round they went home victorious we were the first girls team to ever win the first match at regionals we with partner katie burch had our best record this year said jerica helton the team was later eliminated by columbus north as the successful season came to a close at the regional competition in seymour for now the seniors revel in a season they will never forget and the underclassmen get ready a season next year after the bar has been set higher than ever before so many kids all around the world are becoming bulimic or anorexic yes it is a fact and it is really hard for a teenager to make it through everyday without taking up one of these habits when they think they are overweight some teenagers understand that forcing themselves to upchuck or skipping breakfast lunch or dinner are unhealthy for their bodies and yet some teenagers still do not see the big picture the main point that is so disturbing about this all is that when teenagers see themselves as overweight and begin these disorders they never really stop unless they get help this is because once they have it set in their mind that they are overweight then that is what they see in the mirror i think the tremendous pressure that society and the media put on girls to be thin is a big reason anorexia and bulimia are such a problem in the united states said hannah stoner 10 as they get further into the disorder the harder it is to break it there will be weight loss but there will also be deformations throughout the body teenagers with these disorders should get help or counseling from someone who specializes in these eating disorders said school nurse mary jo duvall once the teenager goes to get help though and starts eating again they gain even more weight than if they had been eating normally all along girls today are attempting to reach a level of perfection that is unobtainable in an imperfect world said dylan johnson 12 this is why it is so important to eat three healthy meals a day and drink lots of water it is not overrated like most teenagers think it is teenagers who are worried about their weight need to change their diet they won t see changes in the first month and this is why most everyone gives up it takes a bit of time for the body s metabolism to kick in and get used to the new routine teenagers should not skip breakfast it will only make them hungrier throughout the day or even convince them that they can eat more also along with this diet adding exercise to their routine will help them furthermore in the end what really comes down to it is making sure teenagers eat three healthy meals a day drink plenty of water exercise and mainly don t give up effects of anorexia and bulimia severe malnutrition serious physical and psychological health issues skin becomes dry flaky and discolored the body gets cold easily since no energy is stored from food in the body to keep it warm hair on top of the head becomes thinner and thick hair forms more quickly all over the face and body problems with the heart bones blood pressure and abdominal area acid in the vomit eats away at the enamel on the teeth and this could lead to gum damage and tooth decay death

12 sports chadwick jones and jordyn croasdell photo editor and staff writer 6.3.11 wells farewells well i made it through 17 issues without trouble but now on my last logan wells column sport columnist when mrs jerrell gave me free reign to say whatever i want i can t think of anything i suppose that is a good thing because it means i was able to say just about everything i wanted it s amazing to look back at how i as well as my column writing have grown over these past four years my columns actually sort of illustrate my growth everything appearing in bold face is a quote from a previous column of mine i m graduating in another month so i m just going to come right out and say it my time here at scottsburg high school has been like it has been with favre it gets tedious at times it has been a story of inspiration and caused me to say things like i believe in scottsburg high school at others it has been despicable it has been sad it has been a lack of ethics and principles and some of the most ridiculous decisions i ve ever seen overall my experience at this school has been dare i say it different all good relationships are based around many things and it is my relationships that have driven the experience i ve had at shs there have been good ones bad ones and ugly ones to the good ones thanks are in order first and foremost to my parents who have shown me what it means to be successful to my teachers who in such a short period of time have done so much already to my friends who have made my shs career truly great even the bad times have helped they have taught me that no matter how talented you are or how hard you work one day you will come up short and knowing this i have become a big fan of second chances and the benefit of the doubt as well as being the most humble person i can be these experiences have taught me why pride is one of the seven deadly sins and how to learn from mistakes in short my shs career has been associated with words such as insanity stress and sleep deprivation it has also at times left me saying what was i thinking but through it all i ve had fun maybe because i am for some odd reason attracted to madness in the end i m not usually one to talk about the good ol days but when i look back on my high school career i ll look from my first ever column to my last column i ll see all the brett favre s the lebron baseball soccer football they re all the same old sports after a while so since this is rookies 101 we decided for the last issue of the year it was time for something new and out of this world well at least out of this country so we traveled to spain canada and finally settled in brazil where we discovered on the brazilian beaches a new venue for competition and fun bossaball okay so really the brazilian beach may have just been jordyn s back yard trampoline but that s beside the point bossaball is a sport combining volleyball soccer gymnastics martial arts and music a court is hard to come by in the states but looks like a large inflatable volleyball court and net with a giant trampoline in the center three sets are played in one bossaball match and eight bumps are allowed to hit the ball over the net there are two teams with three to five players one person is inside the trampoline and is the attacker all others are out on the inflatable if the attacker spikes it to the other side three points are awarded while other flipping while kicking the ball junior jordyn croasdell demonstrates the techniques that are used in a newbrazilian sport called bossaball photo by chadwick jones players hits are worth one point unfortunately we don t own a bossaball court therefore we used our imaginations and practiced skills needed for bossaball on the trampoline just in preparation for our future bossaball experiences abroad the most important basic skill we learned is the ability to coordinate jumping on a trampoline and hitting the ball at the same time believe us timing is crucial and this is much harder than it looks second an intimidating spike is necessary to keep your opponents on their toes third if you really want to up your game learn how to do a back-flip or front-flip to kick the ball over the net our bossaball experience was a ton of fun and we re sure we will both be working on our skills on the trampoline until we get to experience the real thing if
