week 5 term 2 wednesday 1 june 2011 www.isleworth.school.nz kia ora koutou what s happening 2011 7 jun 8 jun 13 jun 21/22 jun 1 jul he ngakau rorotu he pikanga waiora positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self worth there has been a lot of publicity lately about bullying in schools the line between children ribbing each other in a fun way and malicious bullying is clear it is about power the difference between play fighting or ribbing is simple in play fighting or ribbing both children are in agreement about the teasing or rough and tumble in bullying they are not we discourage play fighting at school because very often the line is crossed between what is initially mutually agreeable to the point where one child goes too far and hurts the other we know that children need physical activity boys especially and encourage this through making phys-ed equipment available at play breaks and through our pal leaders programme where older children involve younger children in games while most of us think of bullying as physical fighting or hurting others verbal bullying is far more common name calling insults threats and cruel comments are the commonest form of bullying and are very hurtful for the recipient often damaging their self esteem very badly we continually emphasise our value of caring discuss saying nice things to others we encourage children to mix with all age groups across the school in order to foster a caring family-like community however we do find that children often engage in the types of verbal comments described above we have a zero tolerance to this and will deal with it as soon as we are aware of it often the child receiving these sorts of comments does not alert us to the fact that it is happening despite us constantly emphasising that adults are here to help solve problems if this is happening to your child encourage them to use the strategies listed below if your child continues to be distressed by this type of behaviour from others please let us know as you will realise children making inappropriate comments will make sure that are not overheard by staff and we are often not aware of it unless we are told or notice and question a change in a child s behaviour and inquire why they don t appear to be their usual self how you can help your child these are the strategies we encourage at school · use i statements i want you to stop teasing me i want you to leave me alone i want you to repeat that so that the teacher hears you encourage your child to say this in a loud calm assertive tone and preferably in a situation where a staff member will hear · agree with the bully it takes the wind out of their sails yes i m short but i m also bored by you going on about it · as questions please can you explain what you mean when you call me carrot top i have looked in the mirror and i don t have any carrots on my head check the verbal content of the programmes your child watches on tv many of these have characters using verbal put downs and insults towards each other ask yourself is this programme showing the behaviours i would want my child to mirror because tv has a huge influence on how children behave socially with their peers we also encourage the other children to speak out if they hear or see another child being picked on also using i statements i don t like it when i see/hear you bullying child s name finally please don t hesitate to talk to your child s teacher or myself if you are concerned about anything it may be kids being kids or it may be something more serious which we will deal with unfortunately there are no guarantees that we can fix the problem or alter the bully s behaviour but we will continually work on it and support the victim by helping them develop strategies as described above principal noho ora mai zone cross country chocolate money back pta meeting staffroom 7.30 3 way conferences pta disco 5 jul 15 jul 1 aug
