a non-profit community resource since 1972 funded by our advertisers distributed free by your neighbours volume 40 no 7 may 31 2011 lick s location gets condo application by carole stimmell on june 13 at 7 p.m there will be a community consultation meeting held at the beaches rec centre 6 williamson rd the purpose of the meeting is to get public comment on a planning application for 1960 and 1962 queen st e the applicant proposes to construct a six-storey condominium with 29 residential units retail at grade and underground parking this site is located on the northeast corner of queen and kenilworth and many readers will now be getting a panic attack yes it is the location for lick s in the beach however do not despair while the original location for the lick s chain may be undergoing some changes denise meehan owner of lick s reassures customers that the popular restaurant will remain in the area hopefully for another 30 years we are a fixture in the beach and are looking forward to a new home still at that location or very close to it the proposal is just at the beginning of the approval stage and any construction at the site is probably at least two years away so eat your homeburger in peace photo phil lameira it was all about the pooches on may 28 for the annual slobberfest held by community centre 55 as hugo above can attest the event crowned this year s canine king and queen see page 24 and also handed out many awards to many of the attendees beach bia survey points way for new stores by carole stimmell back in march beach residents were asked by the beach bia to take part in a survey to determine how the community felt about the quality and quantity of businesses along the queen street strip the survey was part of a unique bia initiative which hopes to be proactive about encouraging businesses to move into the area the survey focused on six areas restaurants groceries clothing and accessories professional services miscellaneous goods and miscellaneous services the survey yielded 324 replies primarily on-line survey results suggest that while beachers love their many coffee houses many feel that queen street needs more fine dining establishments people who filled out the survey felt that the area had a number of good specialty food shops but were not satisfied with the quality of local supermarkets under clothing and accessories many of the respondents thought that there was need for more clothing stores under professional services it is no surprise that there was a call for more doctors in the community and still less of a surprise to learn that many people feel that the beach has too many real estate agents pet supplies did well under miscellaneous goods but many said that a furniture/appliance store is needed people who took the survey believed that the beach lacks entertainment and culture but not nail salons the complete results are online at beachbia.com/surveyresults and congratulation to lee beard who won the $25 draw tuesday may 31 2011 beach metro news 3 1977 was a very good year by sheila blinoff b y the beginning of 1977 the newspaper was settling down there were no crises on the horizon it had a paid albeit modestly staff of three editor joan latimer ad manager and editorial assistant amy vanderwal and myself looking after the business and circulation we were putting out 12-page papers and acquiring what our treasurer called a small amount of retained earnings which meant we were moving slowly from a hand-tomouth existence most people don t realize that the paper was originally published on wednesdays we were able to get a spot on the web offset presses on mondays at midnight so that we could move publishing days to tuesdays and give our readers longer to find out what was happening at the weekends we also switched from a five column page to six columns this was the brainchild of our president adverting mogul geoff jarvis who came up with a way of increasing much need revenue a page would still be the same size but by switching from a five column to a six column page we could fit in more ads our clients could still buy a two column ad but the columns were a little narrower among those advertisers in the 70s are stores that no longer exist how many do you remember on queen street hobbit town children s boutique the brass rubbing centre beaches plumbing mart enid s underworld paper what it is today by carole stimmell when i was hired to be editor of beach metro news in 1995 i knew i had some very large shoes to fill joan latimer had been editor of the paper almost from the beginning and it was largely her vision that made the paper an institution in the east end joan said that she was a mother of two small children when she heard that a new paper the ward 9 community news was starting up in the area she was so pleased with the prospect of a local newspaper that she wrote an article on the history of kew gardens for the second issue joan had studied journalism at ryerson and worked at home on two publications marketing magazine and the eaton s company magazine she began to devote more and more time to the fledgling paper burning the midnight oil with many other active volunteers those first few years were difficult joan said finances were always a struggle particularly after the initial lip grant was not renewed none of the staff received a salary it was touch and go said joan and a tribute to the community that they made it happen joan said that there were so many people who helped out in the early days she particularly noted the assistance of reg haney who not only taught the volunteers how to layout the paper but was a genuinely nice guy joan said that she enjoyed editing the paper especially when it got large enough to include more types of local news she also liked the fact that once she was hired on as the official editor she was in a position to run the whole show the mandate of ward 9 news was to focus on local issues and people it was also to be apolitical she is very proud of the paper s now unique status as a non-profit owned by the community joan believed that people would be more interested in reading the paper if it included some lighter features i wanted to make it as representative as possible not just the same old stuff she remembered covering one story where a local person had reported an alien landing in his back yard and who can forget the photos of the cat wearing glasses and brandy the saint bernard under joan s leadership the paper grew in size and distribution becoming the go-to source of local information joan used her knowledge of local people and institutions to keep the paper on top of important local issues and what s changed other than the technology to produce the paper since she retired in 1994 it s a different community today so many people have moved in from outside the area and have different interests as it moves into its 40th year beach metro will continue to make a ·06 may 31.11 5/30/11 10:46 am page 1 6 beach metro news tuesday may 31 2011 in my opinion an early dispatch from the moon this place is the moon said an experienced civil servant to a room full of rookie mps myself included gathered on `the hill in ottawa back home in your riding that s earth as this column goes to print i ve made my third lunar landing since may 2 my trips to date have been for the purpose of finding my footing on `the hill an incredibly helpful house of commons administration is running an unusually high number of first-time mps through an orientation process covering humbly and very proudly your member of parliament my thanks go yes to those who supported me on may 2 but also to all of those who engaged in the electoral process through my 15 months of candidacy my ottawa orientation has enabled me to move forward as quickly and surely as possible with the process of finding and leasing a con stituency office and staff to assist with the important work to be done here on `earth i expect to have an office and staff in place in the coming weeks until then you can reach me at matthew.kellway@parl.gc.ca or effective june 1 416-467-0860 while we continue to get ourselves set-up here on earth work will resume on the moon effective june 2 with the speech from the throne and while i take and you ll note enjoy the point of the earth/moon metaphor i ran for election firm in the conviction that what happens in ottawa affects life here in beaches east york that is to say if we practice the politics that we should be practising ottawa won t be seen to be so remote and politics will be seen to matter to those need it most to matter there are many of course who will swear that a space shuttle is required to get to ottawa and some are outright hostile to the suggestion that this is not so harper s recent appointment of three failed conservative candidates to the senate would i must confess tend to bolster that case but i am determined to uphold the faith you have placed in me or as the case may be to establish your faith in me to close the distance between beaches/east york and ottawa by moving this country forward on the issues that matter most to you this is of course a challenge from the benches of the loyal opposition but from our side of the house we have always to and will always hold the government to account in all that they propose to do to or fail to do for this country more than that we will use as our measure of the government s conduct a vision of a canada organized for the common benefit and premised on the basic dignity and worth of every person in jack layton s terms we will be doing proposition not just opposition we have as the foundation of this vision the platform that we put forward in the election but there is much more to do and a large and enthusiastic ndp caucus including eight of us from toronto who are committed to the success of our city ready to embrace the ago i remember walking down kenilworth avenue with my father tennis racket and balls in hand to learn the great game of tennis my father could not afford membership fees to the kew gardens tennis club kgtc however the club always allotted time for community use now 50 years later myself and other retirees who enjoyed an early morning game of tennis followed by coffee at `tim s must pay a $300 initiation/membership fee in order to play on courts during offpeak times these courts located on prime public city of toronto land paying little or no rent to the taxpayers has become an exclusive private playground for those who can afford the fees most mornings and days the concrete courts are empty i have been told that the club has negotiated a new deal with city bureaucrats giving the club that right there was absolutely no consultation with the beach community who gave these bureaucrats the authority to bargain away the community s rights previous years the community was allocated 38 hours/week during off-peak hours to play in 2011 we have three hours sunday between 6:30 p.m 9:30 p.m over the years from time to time there have been issues revolving around the community s access individual you have acquired the right to enjoy all the benefits of your success your wealth management needs have no doubt grown more complex and require more attention than ever before a natural evolution in this stage is the need for a trusted proven financial advisory group who listen provide constructive advice on your complete financial situation and a high level of service rather than merely selling you a product now relocated to the corner of kingston rd and scarborough rd after almost 10 years on queen st we at the beaches financial group would like to sincerely thank everyone who stopped in to our new location to wish us well we invite you to consider the service and value enhancements that come with being a client of the beaches financial group of ipc securities corporation the beaches financial group by paul brent the national post b ill andersen first met his current financial advisor literally at his front door it was just after the technology bubble had burst and the semiretired toronto ad man was in a receptive mood he tapped on a door at a timely moment because we were shopping for somebody recalls mr andersen who is now fully retired in his mid-sixties the advisor at the door was richard heinrich who at the time was a financial consultant with edward jones three or four meetings followed and bill and his wife donna were convinced over time that mr heinrich was the right advisor for them i liked him just personally and i decided to listen and check him out the andersens had their retirement funds with another firm in discretionary accounts but they were not happy with the level of communication that they were getting an issue at the best of times and of particular importance to them after the tech crash that had kicked off the new decade also kicked holes in their portfolio we kept too out of touch says mr andersen of his relationship with his former investment firm richard s approach was much much better because you know we could talk to him he kept us up to date on what he was thinking and we discussed things before they were done in the years since the andersens signed up with mr heinrich the advisor has left his old firm and established beaches financial group of investment planning counsel in the beaches neighbourhood of toronto and joined forces with corporate and estate specialist mark parlee through the changes the andersens have been unfazed it was the man who we wanted to follow not the business mr andersen explains it was richard that we had confidence in and we were comfortable with so we followed richard the major issue that the beaches financial group resolved for the andersens very early on in the client-advisor relationship was the timing of their retirement at the time mr andersen was semiretired and still doing some part-time work as an art director while ms andersen who is 10 years younger was still working fulltime as a dietician mr heinrich asked them if they wanted to retire at the same time an idea that they had not contemplated but one that they immediately seized upon both retire at the same time then you can do things like travel and so on before i get too bloody old i didn t know how that would go over with donna i was surprised by how her face light up she was delighted with the idea while their finances were in good shape prior to bringing their new financial advisor on board mr heinrich crafted a plan to grow their investments by using a mix of shrewd investment selection which aided by the natural bounce the markets experienced after the tech crash helped grow the andersens portfolio by roughly 50 in the short span before they would fully retire the andersens officially retired about four years ago although mr andersen still does creative design work these days however he does it for free for friends that pro bono work even included designing a sign for the new ipc offices i saw they had nothing they were waiting for a sign to financial advisors richard heinrich left and mark parlee stress the value of client communication in both good and bad economic times it s the old saying `they need to know you care simultaneous retirement was one of the goals that we picked up and started working towards as opposed to just general retirement says the advisor they hadn t thought about retiring together no one had really sat down with them and showed them how that might be possible having that goal made the act of financial planning more tangible and exciting mr andersen says if you pull it off if you can come back from the store mr andersen says i quickly put something together for them he also provided a more invaluable service navigating the city hall labyrinth that is necessary to traverse to get signage approved i have been doing that for decades so i know how that went while the andersens are today in a much improved situation financially the comfort level that mr heinrich has given them is just as important he is a good hand holder mr andersen says when things get bouncy in the world he is a nice guy to talk to he makes sense and he explains things in easy to follow terms actually our portfolio survived some really tough times quite nicely messrs heinrich and parlee are big believers in open and frequent communications with their clients and stepped up the level of discussion with their client base during the financial and market crisis of 2008 it is one of the few things that we can control mr heinrich says if you really want to improve your relationship with your clients call them when the market is not doing so well i have been in the business since the early 1990s so i have been through some down markets but 2008 was a learning experience for me as [it was for most advisors mr heinrich says we called everybody in november a to z and we continued to talk to them through the market downturn mr parlee who worked with his partner at edward jones before joining him at the new beaches financial group of investment planning counsel adds corporate planning estate and insurance expertise to the office he similarly thinks that in-person or telephone conversations are the key to a successful advisor-client relationship you lose the relationship if you are just sticking to emails he says they need to know you are there you know it s the old saying `they need to know you care

www.nikkigoldman.com where never is heard an encouraging word s turdy gert mccurdy is just back from her old stomping grounds in the frozen north and she is positively brimming with news she was invited up to the town of miserable lagoon to officiate at a polar bear throwing contest which as it happens was won by a local athlete named big bad eddie warburton the sturdy one fell hopelessly in love with eddie over a bowl of frozen tundra which they shared at a banquet held in the town igloo following the contest eddie appeared to be likewise smitten but to tell the truth when sturdy sets her cap for a fellow he can either go along for the excitement or risk spending several months in the fracture ward at the local hospital the couple had a wonderful time for a few weeks until one evening sturdy knocked him senseless following a heated dispute at snowball billy s bar and grill at the conclusion of which she announced the love affair was over the police were called in to assess the damage which included three shattered chairs four broken jaws caused when sturdy missed her intended target with a roundhouse right and a plate glass window shattered by bar patrons fleeing the scene during the investigation one of the police asked sturdy how she could have dumped eddie when she seemed so much in love she replied that she could not possibly respect a man who didn t know a right uppercut always followed a left hook and the investigation ended on that note and one final comment on sturdy before moving on to matters of lesser import sturdy has spoken recently of staying in town for a while because she is angling for a test driver s job on the new toronto streetcars before they come into service nothing to report yet but i will keep you informed flattery will cost you $3 plus hst i see by the papers that a new service has been developed featuring people being hired to contact other people and deliver flattering messages about their accomplishments personality or other aspects of their personal makeup now this is the sort of thing that gets alarm bells ringing in what s left of my brain i assume that the message will be delivered on a flatter platter and handed over with a courtly flourish to the recipient but the aspect that puts my senses on full alert is that the compliment is paid for by the sender next thing you know the habit will be picked up by the private sector and i predict this will only have a damaging effect on what might be termed he-she relationships conjure up if you will a scene where a young man arrives at his date s door and rings the bell she answers takes one look at him and shrieks in an excited tone my don t you look handsome the young man reels with delight at the compliment and before his pleasure has subsided the young lady says and furthermore that will be $3 plus sales tax and gst now i am no expert on the dating scene and offhand i can think of many embittered women who would support that claim but i would suggest that such an opening exchange just might not be the best way to start a meaningful relationship the whole idea of choreographed compliments runs contrary to everything we hold dear in our society furthermore i would suggest that three bucks plus gst and sales tax is not cheap phony flattery customized compliments and ersatz ecstasy is not the way to conduct oneself in civilized circles it leaves me aghast and left to wonder whatever happened to emily post now that we need her so the arbiters of good taste that once influenced our rules of conduct must be spinning in their graves clockwise of course because that is what a polite society has decreed celebrate 100 years of service centre 55 and fire station no 226 are throwing a party on june 18 t he distinctive building at the should know here are some wine terms you may encounter on labels or in your wine tasting old vines occasionally a wine label will state that the wine within is made from old vines sometimes it s right in the wine s name like old vine zinfandel what up with that after grape vines reach a certain age they start to produce less fruit but the quality of that fruit is better most of the time they are pulled up and new ones planted because they produce so little and the additional work required to maintain them just doesn t make it worthwhile some producers however choose to keep these vines and continue to make wine from them since the quality of fruit is better so is the wine but guess what the limited production and excess work involved is passed on to the consumer so the cost of the wine ends up higher barrel or tank samples i m sure you ve heard of barrel or tank samples of wine these are wines that are still in their respective fermentation and/or aging containers in other words they are unfinished wines where certain processes are still going on the components are not yet harmonious oak appears rough and even tannins in reds can be devastatingly aggressive most folks don t get to taste these as they re very difficult to access only the best palates like winemakers themselves because it s their job can make something of these wines the only other group that often tastes wines in this format is journalists with our tasting experience we can at times www.viewhotnewlistingsdaily.com re/max hallmark realty ltd brokerage edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer educator judge consultant 416-261-0855 winedoctor@sympatico.ca www.winedoctor.ca project what the finished wine will be like and pass it on to the consumer single vineyard wines single vineyard wines are very special this means the fruit comes from one particular plot of land so there is no blending together of fruit from several properties as a result they possess more character why wines blended from fruit from several vineyards mesh together characteristics of many locations and generally are little more homogenous a single vineyard wine is very unique as it echoes only a specific site soil composition and environment they tend to be more diverse in character from year to year as blending from several sources can smooth out rough edges easy to recognize as the vineyard name i.e rockhill vineyard appears on the label they are the ultimate expression of a particular terroir the term `superior ever notice the term `superiore on some italian wines or gift certificates are always available private and corporate tastings available upon request `superieur on occasional french bottlings and wondered what they meant here s the scoop technically in both countries this means the wine carrying this term contains 1 more alcohol than the basic required minimum as allowed by a particular appellation of a certain region it has also come to symbolize the use of slightly better fruit perhaps from older vines or a wine that has been aged a little longer overall it means the wine in question is slightly higher in quality and a bit more meticulous in its production not a huge difference but enough to render the wine s selling price a few cents more ripasso method the veneto region of northeastern italy is a magical place home to such red vinous delights as valpolicella and amarone it is also the birthplace of a special technique of winemaking called ripasso with it a simple valpolicella is refermented on the dead yeast of amarone the resulting wine takes on some amarone character is more concentrated and alcoholic back in 1964 the well-known producer masi first created the process in a wine called campofiorin and actually registered the concept today this process is widely used and many wineries create their own versions if you ve not tried a wine made in the ripasso method give it a go you ll love it it s valpolicella with attitude copies of the doc s book ask take cash with you be prepared to bargain for prices and remember not to insult the seller you may end up paying more not less i have to confess i have never been one to rouse myself from bed to be the early bird at the neighbourhood sales as i mentioned last column i prefer the online garage sales through craigslist and kijiji no rain or early mornings but i have been known to circle the block later in the day when something has caught my eye at a garage sale just winding down the selection has diminished but you can still get deeply discounted items unsold items at the end of the day often find their way back into the house the goodwill or even perhaps the curb for garbage pickup curbs are a great place to find things at an amazing price free my husband keeps trying to put blinders on me when we go out in the car and i comb the curbs besides craigslist kijiji goodwill and garage sales recycled furniture or other treasures can be found at used furniture stores or stores that sell on consignment i wish i had a huge storage area because i see things that i know i could use one day but unless i know where it is going and what it is going to replace i have to pass it up in order to keep harmony in my house recently i picked up a neat $35 floor lamp with two shades on goosenecks perfect to put between our reading chairs at the cottage i also bought six teak chairs for my son and daughter-in-law refinished them and then reupholstered them in a more contemporary fabric this is now called `upcycling you might not even have to go shopping in order to recycle and that decorating personalities on cityline and in style at home magazine have already discovered frontier sales a facebook page mentions what is coming in everyday there is also a website www.frontiersales.ca and a youtube presence but the best way to find things at frontier sales is by visiting the store regularly one of my student employees said she needed a dresser so i told her
