6 news local friday may 27 2011 the inner city weekender w hile western sydney motorists are angered by the significant drop in funding for the m4 east extension some inner west locals couldn t be happier th is year s federal budget outlined that $270 million was to be redirected to the pacific highway upgrade rather than the m4 east project the original plans were to extend the m4 at parramatta road as far as annandale before diverting north towards the iron cove bridge and south towards botany member of tempe 2020 an action group created in the wake of a proposed m5 arterial road through tempe pat mcinerney said he was 100 per cent against the proposed extension in the fi rst place they are proposing to build a state of the art tunnel worth tens of billions of dollars ­ money that could be put into building the infrastructure to have freight on train lines all the way to the port [botany mr mcinerney said the $270 million that has been redirected was previously earmarked by the federal the nrma is disappointed the budget contains no new money dawn fraser government as planning money for the completion of the m4 east th is diversion of funds leaves just $30 million to complete the $10 billion project however mr mcinerney said the money could be better spent on cleaner transport infrastructure really if the government is serious about climate change m4 east extension funding has been slashed by the federal government with $270 million redirected to another project they really need to think about better alternatives to roads mr mcinerney said a 14km tunnel is an engineering feat in itself with fi ltration stacks every couple of 100 metres it would mean they would have to be in people s backyards it just won t work nrma motoring and services director dawn fraser said while it was good news for the pacific highway it was at the expense of m4/parramatta road motorists we are pleased funding has been allocated to a number of projects but the nrma is disappointed that no new money for such a major road project as the m4 east extension particularly as taxes raised from motorists have again increased ms fraser said infrastructure minister anthony albanese denied claims he killed the m4 east extension considering the project would run through his grayndler electorate it was an agreement between the commonwealth and state governments mr albanese said 300 million was available since 2008 for the m4 east and nothing was done with it 040icd742 040icd756
