may news from the principal s desk dear glen grove families although the weather has not always expressed it this year the green lawns budding trees and colorful tulips are certainly evidence that spring is truly here at glen grove school springtime is that part of the year in which we have one foot in the present and one in the future as we continue to forge ahead with engaging students in the learning process while also planning for the school year ahead we recently participated in activities to develop our master schedule a job we take very seriously as we believe that a school schedule should reflect our mission and communicate our values instructional philosophies and beliefs about how students learn we will also soon undergo the important work of placement and developing the balanced classrooms for optimal learning environments to do so we consider gender learning styles achievement levels interpersonal dynamics the social-emotional needs of our students and the input with which families provided us this is also the time of year when we begin recruiting and hiring individuals to join our learning community at this time we have one new staff member to welcome to the glen grove community ms jenna carrie currently a 5th grade teacher at pleasant ridge school will be joining the kaleidoscope team as a 4th/5th grade looping teacher this upcoming school year i am certain that ms carrie will be a valuable addition to the highly qualified and dedicated staff of our school our students recently completed the spring assessments of nwea in reading math and language usage and the benchmark curriculum based measurement cbm in reading and math the assessment results will be used in a variety of ways teachers students and families will use the results to determine whether individual students have made their targeted growth this school year teams will also use the results to evaluate the effectiveness of their instructional programming as a school we will use the results to help us determine whether we met the goals outlined in our school improvement plan and identify goals for next school year as always we will be sending the nwea student reports home along with report cards we have enjoyed choral and orchestra concerts and the last pta event of the year the glen grove ice cream social/book fair and open house was a fun night for all who attended our students are participating in culminating classroom activities and field trips and we are gearing up for the june events of fun fair and field day as you can see spring is a very busy time of year but it is also a very bittersweet time of transition it was with great excitement that we recently met our incoming third graders and with much sadness that it is also coming close to the time in which we will need to say goodbye to our outgoing fifth graders i end with one final informational note for our glen grove families boy scout troop 55 will conduct a service project on saturday may 21 at glen grove that will involve a rifle salute the troop is gathering at glen grove prior to visiting three cemeteries where they will place flags on the graves of veterans in order to start the event the great lakes navy rifle team will perform a rifle salute they will be using blanks the glenview police department is aware of the salute and the school district has approved the activity i wanted all of the parents to be aware in case you live in the area or are in the area when the salute occurs please look for one last principal s message for the year that will be part of the final gator news of the year due to go out on june 3r d respectfully helena vena

field day volunteers needed field day is thursday june 9 th 2011 from approximately 11:00 -2:30 pm the rain date for field day is friday june 10th field day is when all the students from glen grove will be participating in a variety of activities such as running bases playing knock-out and running some relay races we are looking for parent volunteers to help us run this fun and exciting day if you are available to volunteer on either date please e-mail lori marcotte lmarcotte@glenview34.org or call 847 657-2349 or you may contact preston roberts prroberts@glenview34.org or 847 657-2346 or amy chun achun@glenview34.org or 847 6572349 from the health office as warmer months approach and we are all spending more time outdoors i would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of sun safety most kids get between 50 and 80 of their lifetime sun exposure before age 18 so it is important to teach children at an early age how to have fun in the sun safely there are many good sunscreens available for kids including formulas for sensitive skin waterproof sweat-proof formulas as well as easy-applications varieties in spray bottles most importantly is the degree of protection these sunscreens provide for kids over the age of 6 months an spf of 30 or higher is suggested to prevent both sunburn and tanning choose a sunscreen that states on the label that it protects against both uva and uvb rays as both are harmful to the skin to avoid a possible skin allergy don t use sunscreens with paba or look for a sunscreen with the active ingredient as titanium dioxide chemical-free sun block for sunscreen to do its job it must be applied correctly apply sunscreen generously 15 to 30 minutes before kids go outside don t forget about hands ears behind neck reapply sunscreen often approximately every 2 hours as recommended by the american academy of dermatology use waterproof/sweat-proof sunscreen if kids will be swimming these sunscreens are made to last approximately 80 minutes in the water sunburns can sneak up on kids they often seem fine during the day but the n gradually develop an after-burn later that night that can be painful hot and even make them feel sick if your child does get sunburn these tips may help alleviate some of the discomfort have your child take a cool not cold bath or apply cool wet compresses to the skin to help alleviate some of the discomfort-apply pure aloe vera gel to the sunburned areas give your child an anti-inflammatory medication ibuprofen to lessen pain apply moisturizing cream to rehydrate the skin and treat itching do not use petroleumbased products as they prevent excess heat and sweat from escaping i hope everyone is able to enjoy the beautiful days ahead safely and sunburn free!
