Page 3 MCCA Newsletter December 2015 I was assigned to work at King Middle School in the heart of Berkeley. I guess I was a little “insulated” growing up as this was an eye opener to me. The educational and emotional needs presented by the students was pretty stark. Nonetheless, I ate (it) up... The story that I often share is that this single class provided more learning and growth for me than any of my coursework up until then. The sense of accomplishment and doing something “real” was evident and enough to get me to think about my next steps. Awkward was the word that came to mind. I have always been taught that you support your boss and do that it takes to make him or her look good. So, my instincts told me to do the same here… after the Board meeting… the Superintendent called me into his officer before I headed home. He told me that he hired me, not to be a “yes” man, but to always be truthful, even if it means something counter to what he believes. He said that was okay and that it helped make us a stronger team. As with so many mothers around the world, they have come to provide the spark that makes us achieve. She put up with so much, shielded us from so many vices, and provided when she had so little to spare. It has taken me a long time to appreciate that, and I still don’t fully, but with each passing day of being a parent to our four children, I have a deeper understanding of the mother she was. To provide without praise, to work without seeming tired, and to struggle without complaint; that was who she was . That is who I aspire to be. I’m just an ordinary kid who was raised by an extraordinary mother and it just goes to show that it has as much to do with those who came before us as to determine what will play out after us. —
