4 opinion friday may 20 2011 the western weekender from the editor s desk troy dodds now working her way through her hsc at kingswood tafe in her own words the services nyas provided gave melanie a second chance at an education unfortunately not everyone gets a second chance an organisation like nyas can only help so many people and tragically many of our homeless in this country are youth who are simply left behind by society they have nowhere to turn and nobody to turn to homelessness is something of a hidden problem not just nationally but locally too many of us don t see the problem but i guarantee you that it exists whilst many of us are complaining about the chilly walk from the bed to the shower in the morning many have spent the last eight hours shivering under a bridge last sunday night during my usual end-of-weekend ritual that involves `60 minutes and dinner with my partner i complained that i couldn t fi nd the heater i d packed away last year attending the nyas dinner on tuesday brings home that there s people with much bigger problems than that and it s easy to suggest that these are just words used to fi ll a page after all that bloke behind the desk has no idea about what it s really like right true story i had a blessed childhood with parents who loved and cared for me i struggled through school but found my home in the media and can tick off a number of achievements with hopefully a couple more to come i have no idea what it s like to not have somewhere to call home next month i ll be sleeping out in the cold for a night thanks to the insistence of mark streater from westpac but i ll sleep safe knowing that i will be home in bed the next night others do not have the same knowledge melanie s story was one of many we troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au 9.30am family service 6pm night service a member of australian christian churches you will enjoy this come and hear sunday 22nd may 2011 david wrotniak tearing down the walls sunday 29th may 2011 pastor mick wrotniak every sunday 10am kingswood public school auditorium join us for tea or coffee after the service kids church 10am pastor mick wrotniak ph 0413 827 872 1003wwd7468 1003wwd3530 46-54 second avenue kingswood ou never know when somebody handing you a business card is going to change your life for many such a time may mean a new job opportunity or a career-defi ning moment but for others it means much more let me paint you a picture melanie is 15-years-old she leaves school mid-way through year 10 moves out of home due to a range of problems and is very quickly heading down a path of destruction then somebody hands her a business card that all but saves her life on the card is the name chris and an organisation called nepean youth accommodation service nyas on tuesday night i had the pleasure of hearing melanie and other youth speak about nyas and the help that it has provided a whole bunch of kids who otherwise would have been left contemplating the scraps of a troubled existence the inaugural nyas members dinner was all about informing people of exactly what the organisation does in the community and plenty of important people were listening including lindsay mp david bradbury shadow housing minister marise payne penrith councillors jim aitken and ross fowler and panthers chairman don feltis many of those mentioned above read reports have statistics rammed down their throat and follow the advice of their staff on a whole range of issues but hearing about a particular problem head-on provides a whole different eye-opening view on tuesday night they heard the reality of what some of our youth are facing due to a whole range of circumstances thanks to assistance from nyas melanie managed to complete year 10 through non-conventional methods and is 1003wwd3527 y heard on tuesday night others included a young man who had found his way in life after spending much of his youth in detention centres another young girl had just had a baby and admitted that without nyas her future would be exceptionally clouded we are very quick to judge people based on appearance but we very rarely stop to consider the circumstances they may be facing in the case of the young mother she lost both her parents and hence her family support network was destroyed society may look at her as a young mother who has done wrong but the truth tells a very different story th rough no fault of her own everything she knew was destroyed the lesson is to never judge a book by its cover we beep the driver who doesn t move when the light goes green without realising that he may be going home to tell his wife the bank is taking their house we whinge and moan at the person whose phone goes off during a movie without realising that the very thing they came to the pictures to escape from may have just reared its head for the record nyas is a community managed non-government organisation based in penrith that provides support to young people and families through four different program areas it incorporates things such as emergency accommodation support groups transition to independent living crime prevention and much much more organisations like nyas are a blessing to our community so are people like joe magri the nyas general manager whose passion for what he does cannot be questioned we can only hope that support for such organisations continues as it is desperately needed th um bsup to the two men from jim s mowing and the emergency services personnel who helped 82-year-old desma when
