‘Im Never Ill ’ by Mark D Pritchard I’ve always had a bit of a Superman mentality. Although I’m not especially strong and I’m certainly not the rough, tough, hardy type, I’ve always felt a kind of immortality as if nothing could ever really stop me in my tracks. I like to boast the world’s best immune system. “I’m never ill” has been almost a catchphrase that I’ve used throughout my adult life. If people apologise for coming too close to me because they have a cold, I usually say something like, “It’s okay, I won’t catch it – I never do.” Well I do occasionally, but it’s rare. Taking sick leave from work is something that I just don’t do. When I suffered a sub-arachnoid brain haemorrhage in 2009, I slipped into a coma and they weren’t sure that I’d even make it through the night. Well I did (I suppose you’ve guessed that bit!), and after brain surgery I bounced back and returned to work in just three months. As I told my colleagues, “What do you expect? I’m never ill!” I decided to write about by experiences and explain my philosophies on life and things in general. But shortly after I started doing this, my wife Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer. After two operations she has now been given the all clear. People look at us with sympathetic eyes when they hear of our plight, but the reality of the big picture is that our lives have been improved as a result of our experiences. Because we were both able to make more or less full recoveries we have been able to get back to living normal lives, but with a new, improved outlook that helps us to be happier than we otherwise probably would have been. Although both of us are middle-aged, it’s impossible for us to have a mid-life crisis because we are both on life “take two”. My book I’M NEVER ILL (A journey through brain surgery and beyond…) tells our story. It is available on www. as a paperback at £7.99 and as an e-book at £2.50. Visit our website where there are more details of our story plus our humorous chemotherapy diary which has been shared all over the world and enjoyed by people who are either cancer sufferers or carers. People sometimes ask “Why the ‘D’?” Well there are many Mark Pritchards around, one of whom is a well-known politician and another is an author of books on erotica. Neither of these are me, so I figured that I ought to use my middle initial to make some differentiation. The “D” stands for Derek by the way, but nobody knows. Mark Pritchard lives in Wales and consider himself to be British first and Welsh second. He and his wife (Sarah) have both beaten grave, life-threatening illnesses. Bizarrely, they consider these illnesses to be the best thing that has happened to them, changing their lives in exciting, positive ways that they couldn’t have previously imagined. 12

Why consent matters It would be great to be able to see what your doctor or nurse has written about you, what they have identified and what needs to happen next. Imagine going further and seeing the results of tests you have as soon as, or possibly before your doctor has seen the results? Sounds too good to be true? Yes, that all sounds great, but what if….? by Dr Amir Hannan You see it is great to see your medical records so long as everything is going fine. But what happens if something unexpected happens? Like an abnormal test result, an unexpected shadow on the lung suggesting possible cancer or seeing your partner or work colleague has contacted your doctor worried about your drinking habits. Worse still, how would you feel if this was a lie and they were trying to make you appear as though you were an alcoholic? What happens if you see somebody else’s letter from the hospital? It has all their contact details and what is wrong with them. You may ask how that may happen or why? Simple usually. Human error. The letter for another patient accidentally gets attached into your record. So what do you do? Read the letter and then post it on Facebook for all to see. Or maybe you don’t want anybody to get into trouble and so pretend you didn’t know and not tell anybody? Or do you do the “right” thing and inform the practice so that the letter can be removed from your record, put in the right patient’s record and also make sure whatever needed to be actioned in the letter is done so? Accessing the medical record has its risks attached. So what do we do to try to keep you safe? Simple. The key is to ensure you have consented appropriately, prior to getting access to your records. To do this, it is important you know what the risks and benefits are and you are given the opportunity to ask any questions before you are given access rights. That’s why consent matters – it gives you the opportunity to know what you are signing up for before hand. And we ensure you can find the answers by looking at supporting material when you are asked – not afterwards. So we have developed a simple questionnaire which asks you a series of questions to check what you would do and how you feel about these issues. We developed the questionnaire over 10 years ago and every patient who wants online access to their records is asked to complete the questionnaire. It takes less than 2 minutes to complete but it ensures you stay safe and offers the practice an opportunity to have a chat with you if you are likely to panic if you see some unexpected news and don’t know what else to do. Healthcare does not stop when the practice closes. A simple elegant solution to a complicated problem. In the next issue we will begin to ask how you can prepare for a consultation in order to get the best from it. 14 Dr Amir Hannan is named as one of the United Kingdoms Top 50 Clinical leaders by the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ). He is also Co-Chairman of Greater Manchester NHS Values Group and Chairman of the World Health Innovation Summit.
