g slea hidden treasure just minutes away charming village lays t claim to m delightful rustic cafe we recently decided to take a friend s advice and checked out a charming little village called hannam vale boy was i glad we did hannam vale is a 40-45 minute drive from port macquarie and i can t believe this little hidden paradise is just on our doorstep why hadn t i known about this earlier on saturday morning my wife and i headed about 25 minutes south on the freeway and took the johns river exit after turning right at the hannam vale 11kms sign on to stewarts river road the countryside started to become spectacular with rolling lush emerald green hills dotted with fat happy dairy cattle turning right at the t-intersection on to hannam vale road 8kms the scenery just kept getting better and better as we leisurely followed the sealed winding road past a macadamia farm hills with thick dark green hedges and spectacular large established trees which were showing off their colourful autumn leaves it was a kaleidoscope of colours i just didn t expect after just 10 minutes off the freeway we arrived at hannam vale the village consists of a church a school built back in 1892 a general store and café built in 1914 all in pristine condition although we were tempted to go directly to waitui falls and come back for lunch being coffee lovers we were lured by the famous segafredo zanetti coffee sign out the front of the general store ashley mison the friendly owner who has a reputation for making the best old-fashioned hamburgers around greeted us warmly ashley is also a perfectionist at making a coffee he gave us a quick lesson insisting that the freshest coffee must be tightly packed into the filter heads it was so good we had a second cup while ashley offered his knowledge about the local history and the must-see sights after the coffee and friendly advice we told ashley we would be back in a couple of hours and asked him to book us into the flat rock café which is run by his lovely wife susan we then proceeded through the historical timber cutter s village of waitui and then on to waitui falls all in all about 15 minutes from the flat rock café we were pleasantly surprised to find the waitui falls were just a short stroll off the road about two minutes at the risk of sounding repetitive these falls were also spectacular a beautiful rainforest opening up to a large crystal clear rock pool and a broad waterfall cascading into a deep rock pool the flat rock café has a warm rustic atmosphere everywhere we looked there was something interesting to see a collection of artworks and antiques from yesteryear lanterns grain grinders milk separators susan shared her vision that she wanted to run a café which provided good quality wholesome country meals using the freshest local organic ingredients where possible at value-for-money prices with so many scrumptious choices on the menu i settled for the chicken breast fillets with creamy garlic mushroom sauce it was mouth-watering and so tender the knife cut through it like a hot knife in butter the portion of fries and fresh garden salad which accompanied my generous serving of chicken barely fitted on the large plate value for money was an understatement my wife had the roasted vegetable lasagne she too raved that it was up there with the best she had ever eaten what a great day out we will be back again asap and tell everyone we know just how good it was paul loughland y advice be back sked him ock café ely wife ough the village of itui falls from the prised to re just a bout two sounding ere also rainforest stal clear waterfall k pool a warm erywhere omething collection ues from grinders n shared anted to ed good try meals organic sible at with wholesome rustic country-style food organic fresh local produce and a byo cafe with bottleshop next door hannam vale general store is a hidden treasure perfect for your next outing be it a day out motor cycle ride a bus tour or coffee with a group of friends our warm country hospitality is sure to impress find us here jerusalem rd hannan vale rd port macquarie wit foo ab han trea ad cof c s choices for the h creamy it was o tender ke a hot n of fries d which s serving the large was an had the she too with the y pacific hw hann johns river stuarts river rd group bookings welcome bookings essential so we can prepare fresh quality meals please phone us on 6556 7600 1164 hannam vale road hannam vale nsw 2443 g we will be everyone was bo fr o oughland

the poor of zimbabwe reaching out to the mission is 90 per cent funded by individuals but there are initiatives run by the foster parents themselves to generate funds when the mission sets up family homes the homes are encouraged to set up businesses so they can become self-supporting one of these businesses includes a mini-bus service from bulawayo to harare it s a service that s needed and the cash is helpful to the parents martin s mother and father brian and robyn are still in port macquarie but he said he would stay in africa probably for the rest of his life even though there was less surfing than in his old home town i did ride a rapid once down the zambezi river that s the closest i got to surfing martin said i think i ll always live in africa but i know that wherever i do move i hope i constantly work myself out of a job our neighbours ministry has a number of ways people can help financially contact martinbarrow@hotmail.com or click on www.ourneighbours.org to find out more www.lifestylepublications.com.au 11

barista i happened to see or hear an advertisement for a fast food company advising they now served barista made coffee what did they ser ve before what actually is a barista according to wikipedia the word barista is of italian origin and in italian a barista is a male or female bartender who typically works behind a counter serving both hot drinks such as espresso and cold alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages not a coffee-maker specifically the role of a barista is to acquire knowledge of the entire process of coffee to effectively prepare a desired cup of coffee this knowledge includes the correct operation maintenance and programming of the machine grinding and tamping methods extraction times water temperature and quality micro milk frothing free pouring latte art roasting coffee plant cultivation drying methods correct storage renewable methods of disposal recycling of the coffee and packaging used whew during the eight years café buzz has been open i have had people walk in for a barista job after they have completed a two-hour course we now have baristas everywhere quality baristas are like quality professionals in any industry they work hard and they seek to always work to provide you with the best cup of coffee they can make in my experience it takes two years of work to produce a consistent quality cof fee then the adventure of understanding the espresso machine the grinders and the quality and care of the coffee bean itself begins at café buzz you will know you regularly see the familiar faces of your baristas they have a passion and a desire to do their best for you you see and taste the coffee you see the art on the top but you do not see the time they put in behind the scene looking after the equipment they love what they do and this to me is the essence of being a barista to see baristas at work drop into your local café buzz and forget the fast food places please email your thoughts or questions to harry buzzcoffee.com.au or use our new facebook page buzz coffee or café buzz regards with harry brady harry café buzz coffee the taste on coffee lovers lips café find us on facebook port macquarie peachtree walk 6583 7979 · grant street opp library 6583 5756 settlement city 6583 6767 · laurieton bold street 6559 7744 www.buzzcoffee.com.au · franchises available 14 lifestyle magazine
