from the nurse s office as warmer months approach and we are all spending more time outdoors i would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of sun safety most kids get between 50 and 80 of their lifetime sun exposure before age 18 so it s important to teach children at an early age how to have fun in the sun safely there are lots of good sunscreens available for kids including formulas for sensitive skin waterproof sweat-proof formulas as well as easy-applications varieties in spray bottles most importantly is the degree of protection these sunscreens provide for kids over the age of 6 months an spf of 30 or higher is suggested to prevent both sunburn and tanning choose a sunscreen that states on the label that it protects against both uva and uvb rays as both are harmful to the skin to avoid a possible skin allergy don t use sunscreens with paba or look for a sunscreen with the active ingredient as titanium dioxide chemical-free sunblock for sunscreen to do its job it must be applied correctly apply sunscreen generously 15 to 30 minutes before kids go outside don t forget about hands ears behind the neck reapply sunscreen often approximately every 2 hours as recommended by the american academy of dermatology use waterproof/sweat-proof sunscreen if kids will be swimming these sunscreens are made to last approximately 80 minutes in the water sunburns can sneak up on kids they often seem fine during the day but then gradually develop an afterburn later that night that can be painful hot and even make them feel sick if your child does get sunburn these tips may help alleviate some of the discomfort have your child take a cool not cold bath or apply cool wet compresses to the skin to help alleviate some of the discomfort apply pure aloe vera gel to the sunburned areas give your child an anti-inflammatory medication ibuprofen to lessen pain apply moisturizing cream to rehydrate the skin and treat itching do not use petroleum-based products as they prevent excess heat and sweat from escaping i hope everyone is able to enjoy the beautiful days ahead safely and sunburn free lindsay ferber rn hoffman school health coordinator market day this is the last month to stock up and save this school year with market day there are lots of great values and it raises money for the pta let s make this the most profitable month yet be sure to place your market day order by thursday may 19th at www.marketday.com market day is offering free french toast sticks with a $50 purchase and a free 4 pack of teriyaki chicnsteakes with a $90 purchase market day pick up is scheduled for monday may 23rd from 3:00pm 4:30pm at hoffman school.
