Lo Scarabeo is proud to announce their collaboration with the international artist Paolo Barbieri. Barbieri, who was born in Mantova in 1971, attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Milan. He has collaborated with numerous publishing houses for whom he has illustrated book covers for authors such as Wilbur Smith, Michael Crichton, Ursula K. Le Guin, Umberto Eco, George R.R. Martin, Herbie Brennan and Licia Troisi. He has published various illustrated books of great success (Creature of the Emerged World - 2008. War of the Surfaced World- Warriors and Creatures - 2010, Fables of the Gods - 2011, Dante’s Inferno illustrated by Paolo Barbieri - 2012, The Apocalypse illustrated by Paolo Barbieri - 2013, Immortal Fables - 2014). In 2001 he worked in the world of animation, participating in the realization of Aida of the Trees (2001-Medusa film/ Laterna Magica) working as director of the colors section for the key backgrounds. Thanks to this experience he further developed his knowledge and technique of laying colors for backgrounds, typical of the American (Disney) and Japanese masters. He spent three months in Seul to manage the colors section of the Korean studio that was given the contract to realize the backgrounds for the animated long-film. important Italian publishing house. With these works he has finally bought to Italy what in the rest of the world is a consolidated tradition: books by famous artists in large format that enable the details and colors of their works to be best admired. In recent years the works of Barbieri have been selected by the prestigious magazine Spectrum, the most important “annual” in the world that collects the best of fantasy art. Paolo Barbieri has produced works using the most important pictorial techniques (oil based colors, airbrushing, acrylics, watercolors, pencils, chalks, digital colors) and he is also a master pavement artist. In 2003 he won the Grazie di Cortone contest as a master pavement artist with a work inspired by the 19th century painter Adolphe Bouguereau. For Lo Scarabeo he has produced a deck for 2015 - Barbieri Tarot, an illustrated booklet Paolo Barbieri Dreams, and the illustrations for magic greeting cards. Right below you will also find the preview of the zodiacal calendar 2017, currently a work in progress. Aida of the Trees was one of the most expensive co-productions ever undertaken at the time in Europe, and has been discussed again in the last few years for some “visual” references in the film Avatar directed by James Cameron (2009). In 2001 Barbieri was the first Italian illustrator to be Artist Guest of Honor at Lucca Games, with an anthological exhibition that was the protagonist in the splendid rooms of the Ducal Palace in the city. Paolo Barbieri is the first artist-illustrator that has produced illustrated theme books, with Mondadori, the most
