Listen to what Paul says about this wonderful gospel of reconciliation in his second letter to the Corinthian church. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: AND THAT HE DIED FOR ALL, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ

RECONCILIATION 31 after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And ALL THINGS ARE OF GOD, WHO HATH RECONCILED US TO HIMSELF BY JESUS CHRIST, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; TO WIT, THAT GOD WAS IN CHRIST, RECONCILING THE WORLD UNTO HIMSELF, NOT IMPUTING THEIR TRESPASSES UNTO THEM; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. ―2 Cor 5: 14-21 ! When I read this, it makes me want to shout aloud! ! Hallelujah!

32 WHAT IS THE GOSPEL AND HOW CAN IT BE RECEIVED? GOD’S PART OF RECONCILIATION IS FINISHED So through the gospel, reconciliation is finished. ! God’s part in God did all that needed to be done. ! That’s why when Jesus was dying on the cross, He cried out, “It is finished” (Jn 20:30). ! Let’s go back to our passage in second Corinthians and look at it a bit closer. ... all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ ... God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them ... For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. ―2 Cor 5: 18,19, 21 ! ... all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ ... God unilaterally made a move to reconcile the world to himself.

RECONCILIATION 33 ! Reconciliation from God’s side is completed. It is a done deal. It is finished. ! God was in Christ. Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. The Son of God. The Son of Man. God and man together. ! ... reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them ... God did not impute the sins of people unto them. He imputed their sins to Christ. In other words, Christ paid for them. Figuratively speaking, God put their debt on Christ’s bank account. So that they might receive all that belongs to Christ! ! Jesus knew no sin. Jesus was sinless. Holy. Without blemish and spot. Perfect in thought, word, and deed. Fully righteous. ! He made him to be sin for us. On the cross, a divine exchange took place. A marvelous exchange! God put our sins unto Jesus. Jesus was made sin. So that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. ! ! Can you see it? The righteousness that comes from Christ is a gift. It cannot be earned or deserved.

34 WHAT IS THE GOSPEL AND HOW CAN IT BE RECEIVED? ! It can only be received. (Anything in the kingdom of God can only be received.) ! The righteousness of God comes with the forgiveness of sins. When we receive the forgiveness of sins, we receive Christ’s perfect righteousness as a gift. ! Take note, Christ’s righteousness is a perfect righteousness. A perfect right legal standing before God. ... if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. ! As we’ve said, Jesus death was a substitutionary death. He died for all people. For all people means in their place (see next page). So now people, once they know that, they should not live for themselves anymore. They should live for Jesus who died for them and rose for them. ! Jesus resurrection is proof that their sins have been forgiven. The sins of the whole world were imputed to Jesus. Then He took

36 WHAT IS THE GOSPEL AND HOW CAN IT BE RECEIVED? ! What Jesus has done is finished! But we need to believe it. ! Dare you believe it? “NOW YOU BE RECONCILED!” God’s part of reconciliation is completed. Now, God is waiting for people who have heard this word of reconciliation to turn to him. It is their turn to be reconciled to God. ! That’s why God is now sending out messengers (ambassadors) who preach this gospel about reconciliation between God and man. ... (God) hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. ―2 Cor 5: 19-20 ! The message of reconciliation is this: God has already imputed your sins unto Jesus. There

In order words, once people have heard the gospel it is their turn to respond to it. It is their turn to receive the gospel. (This will bring us to another chapter of the RECONCILIATION 37 is now nothing5:that stands between you book: CHAPTER HOW CAN THE GOSPEL BE and God. Now, RECEIVED? ) you be reconciled to Him! 27 ! In order words, once people have heard the gospel it is their turn to respond to it. ! It is their turn to receive the gospel. ! (This will bring us to another chapter of the book: CHAPTER 5: HOW CAN THE GOSPEL BE RECEIVED?) ! Reconciliation only works when both parties agree. From God’s end, there is nothing that can separate man from God anymore. Because Jesus has taken care of it. The cross is much bigger than most people believe. It has taken care of all sins.

38 WHAT IS THE GOSPEL AND HOW CAN IT BE RECEIVED? ! The problem now that separates people from God is not their sins. Jesus has taken care of that. It’s their unbelief. They don’t know and therefore they don’t believe what Jesus has already done for them. ! That’s why the bible says that people are alienated from God through wicked works in their minds” (Col 1:21). They think that God is against them. But God is not against them. He is for them. He wants them to come to Him, through Him. He wants them to come to Him and receive justification and a new life through what Christ has done for them on the cross. ! Paul talks about this in his letter to the Colossians: And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. AND YOU, THAT WERE SOMETIME ALIENATED AND ENEMIES IN YOUR MIND BY WICKED WORKS, yet now hath he reconciled

RECONCILIATION 39 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister ...; ―Col 1:20-23 ! Again, Paul says its the blood of Jesus cross (His substitutionary death) that reconciled people to himself (all things). ! ... now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight ... It’s Jesus sacrifice, His blood, His body that causes a person to be seen holy and unblameable and unreprovable in God’s sight. It’s Jesus substitutionary sacrifice on the cross that cleanses a person from sin and makes a person acceptable unto God. ! Paul in this letter talks to the Colossians who have already received the gospel. They

And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled ... Paul is referring to the Colossian believers in the past. They were alienated and enemies in their minds through wicked works. They thought that because they were doing wicked deeds God was against them. So in their minds they were alienated from God. They didn’t come to God because they thought that God was against them. (Sometimes people think that they need to be clean before they can take a bath. ) ! But how can people be reconciled to God if they haven’t heard this message? How can they be reconciled, if they don’t believe? ! That’s why someone needs to tell them. ! That’s why Paul said that God has made us (who are already in Christ) to be ambassadors. ! An ambassador is someone who represents another nation or kingdom. Once we are in Christ, we become ambassadors of the kingdom of God, and now it’s our part to tell to people

RECONCILIATION 41 the good news: God has already reconciled the world (you, me) to Himself; now YOU be reconciled to Him. Receive the gospel! Receive the reconciliation. ! We are going to look at how to receive the gospel in PART 2: HOW CAN THE GOSPEL BE RECEIVED? ! But before that let’s look at another aspect of the gospel. ! The marvelous good news of God’s grace. SUMMARY CHAPTER 2: RECONCILIATION Through the gospel, God has from His part reconciled the whole cosmos with Himself. Christ bore the sin of all humanity, so that through Him all of humanity can be reconciled to God. Our message to people who do not know this is now, “Be reconciled to God! It’s your turn to receive what Christ has already done for you so that you can be in right standing before God.”
