·06 may 3.11 5/2/11 11:29 am page 1 6 beach metro news tuesday may 3 2011 in my opinion ontario families need answers and tax relief every day more and more people come into our office for help times are hard for many of them good jobs that disappeared in the financial meltdown have not returned for those lucky enough to find work jobs are temporary part-time or at minimum wage many people work two and three jobs just to try and make ends meet at the same time the cost of essentials like electricity home heating fuel and gasoline continue to rise these price hikes are compounded by the added burden of the hst my caucus colleagues and i have spoken against this unfair tax since its inception last september we michael prue mpp beaches/east york launched our campaign to remove the hst from hydro and all home heating fuels most families have seen large increases in their bills even when they do their best to conserve they are paying the hst on the debt incurred as a result of massive nuclear cost overruns in fact the average household is now paying about $800 more per year on top of this drivers are faced with unprecedented increases in the cost of gasoline the price at the pump goes up every day adding the hst to the cost of a litre of fuel has made sky high prices even less affordable what is worse is that most of the hst revenues have been used to offset huge corporate tax cuts of $2.2 billion worse still is that there is no evidence that any jobs are being created by those corporate beneficiaries not a dime is going into our hospitals or ensuring sure we have sufficient primary care physicians no revenues are being directed to the countless programs that benefit our frail and our elderly linda haslam-steward of the ontario nurses association had this to say every ontarian should brace themselves for yet more cuts to the health care they need and count on ona has been tracking the deletion of registered nursing positions for about eight months now and we ve seen more than 1,800 rn positions cut totaling more than 3.5 million hours of patient are per year that are gone forever so this is the reality for most families in beaches-east york first they are affected by the world economic downturn to which ontario has not yet fully recovered secondly they are hit with unfair new taxes on essentials like home heating fuels hydro and gasoline for their cars third they see much of the money going to pad corporate profits without creating new jobs or prosperity finally they see the services upon which they rely being cut back just yesterday we witnessed an historic federal election october 6 is ontario s next election date the same people who contact our office every day will be looking for answers they want assurances that our next government will be committed to creating good permanent jobs securing livable pensions providing decent and affordable health and long-term care facilities and just as importantly being on the side of consumers and taxpayers who must pay for it all the changes coming to ottawa will be only the precursor of change that is coming to ontario beach metro community news published by ward 9 community drivers out there who think that street stop signs and speed limits are optional being a walker in the beach is very nice but also very hazardous it is not uncommon for motorists to zoom up to the stop signs slow down barely and hit the gas before crossing the intersection since it is clear that it will not be enforced we will need to take more care in crossing the streets this summer don t let toronto winter which always seems so long and so dour we are finally heading happily into the merry month of may and not a moment too soon if you ask me according to my notes the month is named after mae west a popular stage and movie performer back in the 1930s and 40s little is known about her today which i believe is the result of a cover up on the part of her bosses which is what they were always urging her to do cover up that is which i am adding for purposes of clarification mae is long back in the days of her buxom prime mae is no longer with us sadly but now may is beckoning us with the promise of warm days and soft nights ahead so let us all relax and enjoy the good things to come hungry youth there is a certain amount of peril that lies in the future and that has to do with male teenagers who live in the beach i am not sure just how this happens but i believe the warm months tend to inflame the already huge appetites of young men most of whom are over six feet tall and all of whom are ravenously hungry when the noon lunch break rolls around and that is when i get nervous i will be out for a late morning stroll when suddenly the quiet of a typical beach day is shattered by the sounds a of pounding feet and hoarse cries such as leave some for me to eat at the store will you echo up and down our usually peaceful thoroughfares it is nothing to fear actually it is just several hundred famished teenagers on their way to filling stations where they gore on healthy food such as chocolate bars and licorice whips and i must say they are an extremely polite lot never failing to apologize on those occasions when i am sent careening into a garbage container as they thunder past and that is just from the downdraft to sum up i bear those young men no ill-will and i am sure they will stoutly defend me and my loved ones should enemy forces ever dare to invade our shores drink lake ontario water i bumped into my old friend socks donahue the other day and i must say he is looking as fit as a man his age can be i asked my pal what he is doing for a living now and adopting a somewhat furtive stance he finally stated that he is looking for venture capital to help him launch his latest endeavor it turned out that he is selling bottled water from lake ontario which he asserted with a conviction that partially won me over that a daily swig will alleviate 27 different ailments including dropsy and worthington s gout after a good deal of pondering i declined his offer to let me in on the ground floor but i did make note of his office number which i will gladly pass along to any interested parties snowball deficit getting back to the weather along with all right-thinking canadians in this part of the country i enjoyed the relatively mild weather we experienced this past winter but to me there is a down side attached we didn t get much snow and if this keeps up and that could mean that the next generation will grow up not knowing how to make a snowball and i believe this will result in a serious void in the proper education of our youth every youngster should know how to make a snowball or erect a snow fort or build a snowman with a carrot for a nose which can be placed on the front lawn so it is the first thing dad sees when he comes home from work hat s off to yoshi s sweets in other developments yoshi kawano and her husband barry ·13 may 3.11 food 4/29/11 12:47 pm page 1 tuesday may 3 2011 beach metro news 13 money life and law understanding a taxing situation so often the terms mar j mcpherson ginal tax rate effective tax cfp clu tep rate and average tax rates providing are discussed interchange consultations to indiably without really under viduals intheir financial planning standing their meaning lifestyles let s take a quick look at 416-738-1555 these terms and how the information they provide can help guide your financial decisions today and in the future for example in 2010 josephine s total income from employment and investments was $69,000 taking into consideration various tax deductions and credits such as the basic federal tax credit a deduction for canada pension plan cpp contributions and employment insurance the income tax payable by josephine was approximately $17,200 note all rates referred to below are based on 2010 tax year in ontario defining terms average tax rate also known as the effective tax rate is calculated by dividing the taxes you paid in josephine s case $17,200 by your total income for the year $69,000 the average tax rate for josephine in 2010 would be 24.92 conversely marginal tax rate applies to each additional dollar of income earned to better understand marginal tax rates it is important to note that canada uses a stepped tax rate system lower amounts of taxable income are taxed at lower percentages for example those individuals who are earning under $30,000 will be subject to less tax as a percentage of their income approximately an average tax of 13.35 as compared with higher incomes where the average tax may be 33 the bottom line as your income increases the percentage of tax increases using the example above josephine s income is $69,000 per year with an average tax rate of 24.92 however the top tax rate or marginal tax rate for josephine on the next dollar $69,001 would be taxed at 32.92 further if josephine earned one dollar over $75,000 the marginal tax rate for the one dollar in excess of $75,000 would be 35.95 2010 consider the person who receives an increase in salary and realizes they are `taking home less income the salary increase is being taxed at a higher percentage what can the taxpayer do to minimize the impact of income tax on a salary increase a contribution to an rrsp registered retirement savings plan is tax deductible and as a result would reduce the tax on the increased income essentially the tax on the income is deferred to retirement the current theory is income will be lower during retirement and therefore the marginal tax rate will be lower as well by making a contribution to a rrsp you are deferring the income to a time when supposedly your marginal tax rate will be lower retirement taxes the old age clawback is the point at which a portion of old age security oas benefits are repaid to the government if a retiree s annual income exceeds $66,733 2010 an annual income of $75,000 results in approximately 50 of the oas benefit being repaid compared this to the marginal tax rate of 35.39 on the next dollar earned over $75,000 from a pension or rrif registered retirement income fund for some it is impossible to avoid oas clawback however a careful review of income sources and how they are taxed can potentially reduce annual income for example income earned as interest is taxed at the highest marginal tax rate 46.41 ontario however dividends or capital gains even at the top tax rate are taxed approximately 33 and 24 respectively another source of income is prescribed annuities which can provide a lifetime income but at a considerably lower tax cost the source of the income is not the only consideration timing when to start receiving cpp canada pension benefits or rrif registered retirement income fund income may be critical for minimizing annual income tax rrsp registered retirement savings plan while a contribution to an rrsp reduces income tax and allows for tax deferral of annual investment income the downside is the amounts withdrawn from an rrsp or a rrif are fully taxable further a rrsp must be converted to a rrif at age 71 with a minimum required payout which of course is fully taxable cont d on page 15 fire up the grill li ve lobs ter available at lant ic salmon pickere l arct ic char r sushi tuna sword fish tiger shrimp digby scallops r ainbow trou dry skin forgetfulness foggy thinking irritability joint pain blood pressure problems and/or headaches migraines and yet all blood tests come back normal you may have what is called subclinical hypothyroid a condition where you have the symptoms of a low functioning thyroid but it does not show up on blood tests what does the thyroid gland do the thyroid gland is part of the hormonal system and is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body its function is to produce thyroid hormones which are responsible for making energy regulating body temperature and metabolism hypothyroidism is the most common condition affecting the thyroid although the majority of hypothyroid patients are female 90 it can also affect males however because most people rely on blood tests to determine if they are hypothyroid it is often undiagnosed it is estimated that half of all people who have low grade hypothyroidism go undiagnosed how do you know if you have hypothyroidism if a blood test shows that your thyroid is normal but you are experiencing some or all of the above symptoms there is another way you can check to see if you may have subclinical hypothyroid you can take your basal body temperature which is your temperature first thing in the morning when you wake up before you physically get up and move around if your oral temperature is consistently below 97.8 to 98.2 degrees fahrenheit your thyroid may be underfunctioning this test is most accurate when you have jennifer chen bsc nd doctor of naturopathic medicine optimal health naturopathic wellness clinic 500 sheppard ave e suite 307 416 222-heal 4325 www.optihealthnaturopathic.com jchen@optihealthnaturopathic.com had at least three hours of uninterrupted sleep before you take your temperature how can you improve thyroid function if you discover that you do have an underactive thyroid there are some things that you can do to help support thyroid function one of the main ways to improve thyroid function is to exercise regularly exercise will stimulate your metabolism and reduce insulin levels which which will also help you to lose weight exercise at least 40 minutes three times/week you can walk jog dance bike for 20 minutes and do weights lunges etc for another 20 minutes ensure you do not skip meals especially breakfast as this will slow down your metabolism eat nutrient-dense foods which are whole fresh and organic whenever possible avoid pesticides and herbicides as these will disrupt hormonal function avoid processed and refined foods caffeine alcohol and sugar kelp/seaweed contain higher amounts of iodine which the thyroid requires for proper functioning other minerals which are essential for optimal thyroid health include zinc selenium copper manganese magnesium and calcium these can usually be found in a good multivitamin-mineral if our diets are lacking in these nutrients ensure adequate intake of essential fatty acids e.g fish oil cod liver oil which all glands require check for food sensitivities especially become a part of your child s preschool journey gluten which can worsen thyroid problems avoid foods which can suppress thyroid function goitregens unless they are cooked these foods include broccoli cauliflower brussels sprouts cabbage and mustard greens brassica family other foods that can suppress thyroid function include soy kale spinach turnips apples peaches pears peanuts pine nuts cassava millet tomatoes and walnuts cooking seems to inactivate the goitregenic effect of these foods avoid fluoride and chlorine as they both compete with iodine which is essential for making the thyroid hormone fluoride mostly found in tap water therefore filter your water and most brands of toothpaste look for a natural fluoridefree toothpaste final consideration do not neglect the adrenal glands lastly ensure your adrenal glands are functioning optimally and are not exhausted especially if you are under chronic stress as this can prevent your thyroid gland from healing some patients focus only on treating their thyroid gland to no avail and neglect to check if their adrenal glands glands which respond to stress are underfunctioning these patients often do not respond to treatment until the imbalance in their adrenal glands is addressed once the adrenal glands are treated hypothyroid patients finally start their road to recovery and begin to feel much better it is important to be monitored by a qualified healthcare practitioner when undergoing any treatment for the thyroid so that your progress can be properly assessed note this article is village by rev cynthia scott humourist and author garrison keillor says we always have a backstage view of ourselves we let the audience see only the neatly arranged stage but behind the curtain all kinds of things are lying around old failures hurts guilt and shame psychologists tell us that shame sweeps over us when our fantasy about who we would like to be encounters the backstage reality of who we really are nothing is more confining to our souls than working at hiding shame we lock up more and more doors sealing off more and more rooms to prevent our true selves from being discovered but just when we think we re keeping the world out we discover instead that we re keeping ourselves locked in there s no question that our world has changed since 9/11 we re linked very closely in a global village it would be so tempting to shut the doors to the surrounding world but tribalism only divides us and is counter productive to the building of community and beneath the larger social divisions can be tragic personal divides our talents are stretched to the limit sometimes our tempers flare we can get so full of ourselves one minute and so beside ourselves the next so if we make the effort to reach across the gulf of our otherness and extend ourselves to each other by entering into one another s lives the world will be a happier place for there is no greater gift we can give one another than the gift of self if we had some vantage point in outer space to take a photograph of the whole human family we would see that there are something like 462 million people starving right now half of them under five years old we lie in our beds while others lie in the gutters the good news is that we can become aware of those in need we reach across the gulf when we participate one of the most pleasant easy-to-get-along-with personalities i know why the complaint we are talking about the merits and drawbacks of going to a small school yes she concedes it is great to know everyone in the school students even know most of the parents who naturally are more inclined to hang around the schoolyard because they know a few people and then get to know even more the students spend their days with a few dozen children for as many as 10 years in a k-8 school they get to know all the teachers and staff and vice versa all sounds good to me if everyone knows everyone else in a community-be it a small town a sports team or a small school-people tend to behave more responsibly they are modivated to be accountable for their actions and behaviour and possibly to think of the community s collective concerns instead of just their own but then there is the complaint from my daughter about the mandatory niceness requirement apparently she s not permitted to just have a grumpy day she s got to swallow hard and be cheerful even when she s feeling cranky i respect · resourcefulness · responsibility b fully accredited montessori program full-day casa 2 years 8 months 5 years reached at mhoogeveen@sympatico.ca suppose that is a drawback i encourage her to think about the benefits doesn t she benefit by attending a cheerful upbeat school isn t it good that other students will be hauled up on the mat if they make snide remarks or behave selfishly without the relative anonymity of a large school students can t get away with leaving others out or being mean students therefore learn to behave and everyone benefits most schools large and small encourage all students to be respectful and inclusive in their interactions i ve often heard teachers use the phrase you don t have to be friends as long as you re friendly a child who can actually learn to embrace that message will be better placed to flourish in today s workplace where a reputation for being a team player and getting along with others goes a long way part of growing up is learning to be polite even to people you might not know well or people you don t actually like all that much but have to work with i contend that children can learn that lesson better in a small school because someone is sure to take them to task if they don t going a step farther however students in a small school might more easily learn to be not just polite but actually accepting of others faults i advise my daughter to remember the lesson of jerry seinfeld yes folks in a faraway era i wasted many brain cells watching the jerry seinfeld comedy show i used to shake my head that jerry would put up with his friend george remember george he was forever embarrassing his friends with his inanities why i wondered did they put up with him on reflection many years later i realized that the seinfeld show was like real life at least in the following sense friends are rarely perfect and we would do well in life not to reject friends when we discover their imperfections which we all have of course i try to encourage my daughter to accept enjoy and appreciate her friends and classmates even when they drive her a
