apple valley unified school district firebird press volume 1 issue 2 newsletter date phoenix academy is still the place to be inside this issue red ribbon week halloween party avid knotts trip ar party younger ar party older holiday bazaar winter ball 2 3 4 5 6 7 7 phoenix academy is still the place to be and things are progressing nicely teachers are feeling more at home in their new classrooms and students are learning that failure is not an option students are working hard setting goals and feeling like phoenix academy is a safe place to get an education the biggest change occurred over winter break the lower campus office closed down and everyone moved to the upper campus office this change has been huge but necessary in the organization of phoenix academy the younger stu dents all had the opportunity to take a field trip to the upper campus so they could become familiar with the new arrangement now they know where the nurse is as well as attendance and mr bell s office the lower campus is working on their ar goals the upper campus is working on keeping the quad clean during lunch everyone tries to work together to make our school the best by the firebird press staff special points of interest red baron with mr grube by angie villalobos/genely barajas we interviewed mr grube about his red baron club and asked him a few questions he gave us some very helpful answers on what the club is all about the questions are located below what is red baron all about it s an online flying plane game what are the requirements to join red baron you must want to learn how to fly airplanes how many kids do you have in the club 27 but we would like more girls when are the meetings friday are the mandatory meetings and monday through thursday are free practice how did you come up with the idea actually it wasn t my idea a student came up with it six years ago what does this teach children they learn how to read plane instruments read maps and learn how to fly planes can kids download the software at their house yes if your computer can allow it so we thanked mr grube for his time and left now we know what the club is all about mr grube owns his own red baron plane.

apple valley unified school district newsletter date unknown volume 1 issue 2 red ribbon week at phoenix academy red ribbon week by kari valentine angel turner red ribbon week was created 25 years ago so people could show their support for organizations fighting against drugs now over 80 million people show their support by wearing different things usually that have the color red on them at our school we do things a little differently on monday we wore crazy socks almost everyone wore their most bizarre socks on tuesday it was crazy hat day hats with fish hats with faces almost any kind of hat you could imagine found their way to our school on wednesday we wore school shirts to show our school spirit also on wednesday we had a pep rally for anyone who chose to show their school pride thursday was crazy hair day everywhere you looked you saw an incredible variety of colors and styles friday we wore costumes to school bugs fairies and witches made the school look like a zoo also on this day the drama club from the high school along with the police and fire department put on a presentation showing the harmful effects of drugs some of those harmful effects are getting expelled divorce job loss and even death friday evening phoenix academy hosted a halloween carnival in the upper campus mpr this was open to all students and their families there were lots of different activities from a cake walk to throwing a ping pong ball to win a goldfish everyone had fun quotes drug free and proud -angel turner grade 8 drugs damage more than just you other people are also effected by your choices -kari valentine grade 8 pick candy not drugs halloween carnival -taylor rossi grade 7 keena grade 2 drugs are not a game so be all you can be don t play it -alysa avoid drugs -coach quiggles grade 8 young pe teacher i got lots of candy at the drugs are bad joel rodrigez 7th grade

the firebird press apple valley unified school district volume 1 issue 2 holiday bazaar the holiday bazaar started on tuesday dec 14 2010 from 9:30-2:30 it was a program set up to raise money students bought christmas goods for their loved ones the money goes to good use to help the phoenix academy students thanks to the staff of phoenix academy the holiday bazaar was possible one of the staff members that we interviewed was ms sims here is the interview q how successful was the holiday bazaar a the holiday bazaar was a great seller it was a wonderful thing not only for the school but also for the students they look forward to coming in and seeing new stuff available for sale everyday q what was the most popular item in the holiday bazaar a the biggest seller was the snowman soup we had this holiday christmas cups and it was basically hot chocolate with hershey kisses inside a few marshmallows and a little candy cane mrs beal s embroidered large stockings were big sellers too the holiday bazaar was a great success and a great experience thanks to mrs beal and ms sims without them this wouldn t be possible louise labra bryanna harris keitheanna butler seeing all of the students go through the bazaar was so much fun the younger ones especially trying to decide what they would buy for mom or dad or grandma or whoever i ll bet their family members really appreciated these gifts mrs welemin holiday bazaar staff mrs beal ms sims snowman winter ball by bryanna harris louise labra victoria morris and keitheanna butler winter ball was a dance we had on january 21st 2011 from 3-5pm the theme was winter wonderland this lovely ball was planned by asb they decorated and ran the entire affair overall the students had a pretty good time and enjoyed themselves here are some quotes q what was the best song they played a my favorite song was party in the usa by miley cyrus lawana sims 8th grade q did you like the dance a heck yeah gabrielle parsons 8th grade

volume 1 issue 2 newsletter date unknown firebird press applevalleyunifiedschooldistrictavidfieldtrip gettymuseum on friday january 21st the 7th and 8th grade avid students went to the getty museum which is located in the foothills of malibu the field trip was arranged to award the avid students for being responsible and working hard in order to go on the field trip avid students had to have a 3.0 gpa or higher they could not have any u s and no more than one n the museum was established in 1954 it is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts it houses european paintings drawings sculptures illuminated manuscripts decorative arts and european and american photographs we boarded a tram a trainlike vehicle and slowly went up the hill to get to the museum as soon as we arrived at the museum the adults split us up into groups of six all the groups visited different art floors we saw many extraordinary arts from renaissance time from the top floors of the getty museum you can see the amazing view of the ocean a few minutes before we got back on the tram the students got a chance to visit the gift shop this trip was an experience never to be forgotten by bertha cabrera yomira valenzuela helena diaz
