king s news the king s school ely learning adventurously spring 2011 top class all 22 get a in early gcse maths exam star students standing from left anna merrell luke cave ruth scott william hall ruth stephens tom allpress jessye sadler james wege lily mcconkey leo banahan anna calderbank oliver rowett maddy farbon james huffer sophie blythe front seated sophie emms charlotte callard alice porter charlotte emms anna hamilton sarah hawdon-earl and clea tanner picture liz sayers the achievement of a year 11 class made national newspaper headlines and brought anglia television to king s when they heard that all 22 had achieved a grades in gcse maths after sitting the exam in january it s a remarkable achievement for a whole class to pass at a especially as they sat the exam sixth months early said their teacher ian mcwhinney they worked hard and i m proud of them all this is the second successive year that a year 11 class has achieved such success the group that achieved straight a grades in 2010 was taught by head of maths steve cavill to achieve such success two years in a row is a remarkable achievement by our pupils said mr cavill interestingly two thirds of the class in 2010 were boys and this year two thirds were girls demonstrating that in a dynamic co-educational environment with inspirational teaching girls and boys can work alongside each other and achieve their potential twelve king s students gained gold certificates and many more were awarded silver and bronze in the intermediate mathematics challenge six progressed to the next round the european kangaroo jessye sadler luke cave oliver rowett and leo banahan from year 11 emma brown year 10 and felix peck year 9 putting them in the top 1,000 students in the country best in school went to charles lin a king s international study centre student who went on to take the very challenging olympiad paper putting him in the top 200 in the country record number choose king s for the first time in the history of king s which dates back over 1,000 years pupil numbers topped 1,000 at the start of the lent term the school was re-founded by king henry viii in 1541 when he gave the school its first royal charter and established the first 12 king s scholars one of the privileges he allowed them was to play games including the bowling of hoops in the cathedral precincts turn to page 5 to read why the 2011 hoop trundle broke with tradition jonathan east and jessica bartlett winners of the 2011 hoop trundle enquiries@kings-ely.cambs.sch.uk 1 www.kingsschoolely.co.uk

king s news transport art transforms phonebox a hot air balloon and a space rocket suspended from the roof of prickwillow s redundant red phonebox have intrigued passers-by ­ especially when they realise that these have been made by children from king s acremont nursery the youngest artists ever to display artwork at this unique gallery all the nursery s three and four-yearolds were involved in preparations for the exhibition on the theme of `transport the children were very excited at the prospect of displaying their work and hope it brings pleasure to everyone who views it said katherine buckingham the nursery s deputy head the children have considered how different the world was without engines or machines and learnt that animals are still used for transport in other parts of the world they have `invented the wheel learnt about the invention of the steam engine looked at a car engine and investigated a minibus had a visit from a postman and climbed in his van and made a cardboard car with enough room for two to sit in young artists katherine buckingham deputy head of king s acremont nursery with freya edell angel bailey mara bradbury and max evans at prickwillow phone box boxing clever the interior of the phonebox good work max freya angel and mara give their thumbs up for a job well done helping christchurch many members of the king s community have links with new zealand and wanted to do something to help the people of christchurch following february s earthquake which claimed so many lives and devastated the city king s junior school art co-ordinator sarah green was brought up in christchurch and was moved by the heart-warming response of parents and pupils to a `mufti day and cake sale which raised the magnificent total of £861 essay impresses judges an essay by satoko aizawa impressed the judges of the annual jowett sendelar essay competition this national classics competition is open to pupils in year 9 entrants had a satoko aizawa choice of four `impressive work categories warfare greek gods rome and greek mythology and had to write approximately 2,500 words on their chosen title satoko chose greek gods concentrating on athene the goddess of justice and wisdom her essay was placed seventh out of 106 entries and won a merit award the judges commented that it was `a hugely impressive piece of work which demonstrated keen interest and in-depth knowledge athene had been researched in meticulous detail racing and tasting the nursery children enjoyed making their shrove tuesday pancakes and taking part in a pancake race ­ but eating the pancakes was the best part of all photography and fashion prizes digital photography by lucie fisher and fashion design by cheryl liu went on public display at the babylon contemporary art gallery in ely the girls were prize winners in an art competition open to pupils from schools all over east cambridgeshire the competition which was judged by professionals was organised by arts development in east cambridgeshire adec which runs the gallery and ely-hereward rotary 2

king s news hoop trundle breaks with tradition they re off plenty of support from fellow scholars as another heat gets underway for as long as anyone can remember the hoop trundle has been staged on the road leading to the south door of ely cathedral but this year in a break with tradition the scarlet-gowned king s and queen s scholars bowled the traditional wooden hoops round a course on the grassed area at the cathedral s east end there were fewer spills but no fewer thrills as pupils staff parents and tourists watched the heats and the finals which were won by jonathan east and jessica bartlett the mayor and mayoress of ely cllr brian ashton and his wife dene presented the commemorative wooden tankards which jonathan one of the heads of school and jessica will keep for the year question time for minister will the increase in tuition fees lose you the student vote that was one of the questions put by sixth formers studying government and politics when they had the opportunity to question minister of agriculture james paice mp for south east cambridgeshire his visit followed a tour of westminster which the group made earlier in the year when parliament was not in session other questions included should the james paice with sixth formers studying government and politics and economics and teachers mrs sharon jackson and andy thomas house of lords be fully elected given the controversy over selling off the forest and the subsequent climb down would it not have been prudent to have fully consulted the public beforehand why has the government given greater financial power to the gps are economic cuts really necessary how committed are the government in promoting eco towns given our current economic state how can the government justify spending large amounts of money over libya gala concert dedicated to clara ely cathedral choirs the school s chapel choir and the newly formed king s chorale bringing parents staff and friends into the choral community of the school combined for a gala choral concert which was dedicated to the memory of clara taylor they sang vivaldi s gloria conducted by paul trepte and mozart s requiem conducted by ian sutcliffe soloists were tara bungard soprano ashley harries countertenor nick madden tenor and james rees bass a fellow of the royal academy of music chief examiner of the associated board of the royal schools of music and vice-chairman of governors of king s clara was a ferocious supporter of the establishment of the girls choir her widower rodney lewellen has endowed the clara taylor music award which will go to former pupils of king s who continue their studies in top conservatoires either straight from school or as post-graduate students clara taylor who died at the age of 61 last july picture gary rowsel 3

king s news kayakers sights set on alpine waters instructor paul lott leading lily mcconkey marcus connolly and matthew ley down a grade ii rapid on the river tees marcus connolly shooting low force waterfall on the river tees six hardy members of king s kayak club travelled up to teesdale to put their skills to the test on the river tees over a weekend in march the high instructor to pupil ratio meant the six received almost one to one coaching on white water skills such as breaking in and out of the current and ferry gliding after a good night s sleep on the saturday the group returned to the same stretch of river to complete the section they moved efficiently over the five-mile stretch of river and then returned to the top of the river to run low force waterfall a three metre drop the pupils grew in confidence honed their skills and knowledge of rescue techniques in preparation for the club s planned expedition to the french alps in july 2012 culture box arrives from cairo over the holidays the culture box which year 1 pupils had carefully put together during their arabic classes was sent off to king s acremont s partner school in cairo the arrival of the box from cairo was eagerly anticipated when it arrived the children found a beautiful perfume bottle a statue of queen nefertiti and some egyptian money one of the favourite items was a belly dancing scarf with a cd of arabic music the culture box has given the children a real insight into the lives of their peers in egypt as well as making them think about and appreciate their own culture when deciding what to send to cairo said lorraine oldham teacher of arabic at king s acremont young musicians of the year a total of 192 instrumental and vocal performances were given during two weeks of preliminary rounds of the senior school s competitive music festival culminating in the finalists concert in ely cathedral when adjudicator was simon kirk director of music at st john s college school cambridge intermediate prizewinners piano:yuki kimura woodwind luke cave brass c.j porter-thaw strings bowed yuki kimura singing fiona campbell classical/opera song and bryony ding popular/operetta song organ anna-rose sliwinski percussion will brennan ensemble anna hamilton isobel leventhorpe and c.j porter-thaw intermediate instrumentalist yuki kimura intermediate singer and intermediate young musician of the year bryony ding senior prizewinners newport piano prize ron yang hunter cup for winner of the senior class eric hoare woodwind prize martha eddy brass prize oliver hill strings prize ron yang bowed and rowan mcconkey plucked singing martha eddy classical/opera song and cheryl liu popular/operetta song percussion josh sivier senior singer martha eddy senior instrumentalist senior young musician of the year and overall winner rowan mcconkey talented quartet from left yuki kimura bryony ding martha eddy and rowan mcconkey all about egypt bertie whymark with some of the items in the culture box 4

king s news korean dance enchants cathedral audience out of the frying pan and into the choir ely cathedral choristers marked shrove tuesday with a special pancake race in the cathedral on shrove tuesday these eight and nine-year-old king s junior school pupils all agreed it was a good way to let off steam after evensong pictured getting in some pre-race practice outside the cathedral s west door are from left david thomson reuben kirkman thomas tolliday and sam black picture richard patterson cambridge evening news oxford offers two sixth formers have been offered places at oxford university ­ charlotte bain to read history at st peter s college and oliver moses to study classics and modern foreign languages at st hugh s the offers are dependent on the results of the a-level exams which they will sit this summer charlotte head of school and a queen s scholar is studying history geography and religious studies philosophy of religion and ethics and oliver a king s scholar is taking french latin and spanish graceful hyun young kim dances under the octagon in ely cathedral picture keith heppell cambridge evening news spellbound king s junior pupils watched in wonder at a performance of a traditional korean dance by 16-yearold hyun young kim she has to make meticulous preparations for the `flower fan dance and it takes her two hours to dress in her beautiful fiveskirted costume and create her make-up and elaborate hair-style which is adorned with golden decorative pins and combs the dance tells the story of a woman who whilst normally chaperoned in everyday life imagines herself free as a bird hyun performed on stage under the octagon at the end of junior school s weekly service in ely cathedral she is preparing to take gcses at king s international study centre but her dream is to be a great ballerina or choreographer so all her spare time is spent in ballet classes i have to practise dancing a lot every day and i love the large dance studio in king s performing arts department studying at king s international has given me great opportunities to perform and i loved dancing for the junior school pupils she said she has been taught the intricacies of traditional korean dance by her mother who is a renowned dancer teacher and choreographer based in the family s home city daegu south korea charity dinner john bentley former british lion rugby player was at king s on 1 april he conducted an afternoon coaching session and was guest speaker at a champagne reception and four-course charity dinner in the monastic barn he was auctioneer for an after-dinner auction of promises to raise funds for children orphaned by the tsunami in sri lanka in 2004 5

king s news welcoming the year of the rabbit in mandarin the chinese lunar new year ­ 2011 is the year of the rabbit ­ was welcomed in mandarin by these junior school year 3 pupils who are learning the language they are holding chinese good luck charms and the `lucky money envelopes they made which are given as gifts during the festivities in china meanwhile younger pupils at king s acremont welcomed nine students from king s international study centre who acted out the story of the origins of chinese new year celebrations and sang chinese songs they helped each class paint characters on `couplets ­ red banners which are hung around door frames of chinese homes to bring good luck during the coming year the head of king s acremont lynda brereton said by the end of the morning the children were using chinese greetings with great confidence and a chinese lunch rounded off an exciting and memorable morning year 3 pupils with good luck charms and red lucky money envelopes expert help from king s international student natalie yeung from hong kong araminta gordon and tim ziegert with completed couplets at king s acremont creativity goes on show stepping back to the art and design exam results achieved by king s school ely senior students are consistently among the top nationwide so visitors to the school s spring exhibition were guaranteed to see some exciting work in photography fashion and textiles as well as examples of sculptural work and fine art the exhibition was staged in the £3.5m arts complex which was opened last year by former pupil lord browne of madingley in his capacity as chairman of the tate gallery director of art alison rhodes said the new building continues to inspire our students preparing to welcome visitors to the spring exhibition creativity it also provides a magnificent space to exhibit their work to best advantage the students love to talk about their work and we were delighted that so many members of the public came to visit the exhibition included not only textiles student abigail franklin with one coursework by sixth of her fashion designs and photographer formers taking as and livvy davis a2 but also work by pictures helen drake ely standard year 9 and gcse pupils days of etheldreda year 3 enact the story of the founding of the monastery with audrey raynes centre taking the role of its foundress etheldreda picture cambridge evening news learning about the anglo saxons is certainly proving to be an exciting adventure for junior school s year 3 pupils they have been using the school s new state-of-the-art netbooks to research life in an anglo saxon village but left modern technology behind to step back in time for a day at ely cathedral and the city s museum at the cathedral they re-lived the story of hereward the wake by becoming monks at ely monastery and making the decision of whether or not to surrender the monastery to the normans they also re-enacted the story of st etheldreda the anglo-saxon foundress of the monastery at ely considering her choices and reflecting on their own in the afternoon there was a `hands on workshop in ely museum where they learnt about life in saxon times including weapons and warfare and there was the chance to handle some of the museum s artefacts the combined resources of the cathedral and ely museum really brought to life everything the children have been researching in the classroom it was a really memorable `learning adventure said teacher katie pearce 6

king s news king s company connects with national theatre pictures by martin ley open air shakespeare the lord chamberlain s men openair touring company makes a welcome return to king s on 24 may to present an outdoor production of shakespeare s a midsummer night s dream named after shakespeare s own theatrical troupe the lord chamberlain s men attempt to recreate the world of shakespearean theatre as accurately as possible with an all-male cast and historically relevant costume music and dance award-winning playwright james graham s bassett was premiered by king s company as part of the school s involvement with the national theatre s innovative `new connections programme which gives teenagers the chance to perform challenging new plays by contemporary writers there were convincing performances by rob archer leo bryony ding kelly sally cheng shanti tony lesmeister graeme alec prieto spencer deen tarrant raja amid zach binge dean megan gilligan joanne johanna going aimee toby hill russell tegan howlett lucy matthew ley jonathan tori mcirvine zoe and yaya mcirvine rachel the first performance was attended by luke kernaghan one of the team of national theatre staff directors whose show report detailing all the elements of the production is being used by director adella charlton to give constructive feedback to the company before the production is re-staged at a regional festival at norwich playhouse on 4 may hayward theatre audiences were also offered a second one-act play for we are many an adaptation by philippa blair a member of king s english department of euripides the trojan women both plays shared a link with conflict and with how those left behind cope with the effects of war king s first became involved with the national theatre s initiative in 2009 with an award-winning production of anthony horowitz s new black comedy a handbag and chaucer s canterbury tales king s company will stage its own open-air production of some of chaucer s canterbury tales adapted from the original middle english but with the earthy humour retained after the roaring success of comedy of errors last year the setting will once again be in the arts centre quad on tuesday and wednesday 5 and 6 july picnics will be welcome soprano catriona clark accompanied by baritone daniel howard and pianist oliver hancock appear in concert on 13 may the final event in king s concert society s eighteenth season is a gala jazz night with the david reeswilliams trio on 17 june for all tickets details email boxoffice@kings-ely.cambs.sch.uk or telephone 01353 653931 mother s love hecuba emma jones with daughters androche beatrice white and cassandra darcie casey mother s grief hecuba is comforted as she grieves for cassandra pictures martin ley 7

king s news technology teams face up to challenge year 9 design and technology students were among the award winners in a technology tournament organised by cambridge rotary working in teams of four they were provided with wood two rods of dowel pulleys elastic bands string batteries and wire with which to build a crane using glue guns saws and drills they then had 40 seconds to guide their crane for a metre along a track and lift a small water filter from a container head of design and technology claire brown said design and technology is all about problem-solving and the skills they used would have been similar to those used by engineers and designers who rescued the chilean miners trapped deep underground or those who stopped the oil leak in the gulf of mexico the mayor of cambridge cllr sheila stuart presented the hauser-raspe award for `overcoming difficulties to felix peck keaton aggarwal ellen howard and ellie banahan they and a second king s team of clementine bright oliver karwoski-budd euan richards and matilda scott all achieved bronze crest creativity in science and technology awards telling tales back home john harris the only full-time professional storyteller who works exclusively with younger audiences enthralled junior school pupils when he spent the day telling stories to years 3 4 5 and 6 classes at the last count there were over 350 stories in his head and he s always working on more he asked all the children to tell one of the stories they heard to someone else before they went to bed that night the mayor of cambridge cllr sheila stuart presents felix peck keaton aggarwal ellen howard and ellie banahan with their award radio pundit judges debate the rev angela tilby vicar of st bene t s church cambridge and a regular contributor to bbc radio 4 s thought for the day judged the senior school s inter-house debating competition finals both won by wilkinson wilkinson had proposed the middle school motion `this house believes that no law should limit free speech opposed by anna-rose sliwinski fiona campbell and annie green representing etheldreda in the senior debate the wilkinson boys opposed the motion `this house believes that big society means big injustice proposed by torfrida s lexi hill christine burnford and tori mcirvine the rev angela tilby with the winning teams representing wilkinson house from left leo banahan guy matthews oliver hill george ryan alec pinto and matthew diss new governors appointed three new governors have been appointed to the governing body of the king s school mrs anthea kenna is head of the cathedral school chelmsford she was previously head teacher of st anne s church of england primary school godmanchester from its opening in 1999 to december 2009 and before that was head of thriplow church of england primary school she is keen to promote quality musical experiences for all school pupils her personal involvement and love of choral music has enabled her to develop highly acclaimed youth choirs she also plays in the city of cambridge brass band and performs locally and nationally with the south anglia savoy players she was until recently a member of ely cathedral council and ely royal school of church music she is the dean and chapter s appointee following the retirement of mrs sally rowland professor michael proctor is the university of cambridge s representative governor following the resignation of dr larry abeln he is vice-master college senior lecturer and director of studies trinity college and visiting professor university of leeds he was appointed a fellow of the royal society in 2006 and to the fellowship of the institute of mathematics and its applications in 2007 dr kathryn skoyles has been appointed as a coopted governor she studied at the london school of economics and in australia before being admitted by the law society as a solicitor in 1988 although she continues as a consultant with a major investment company since 2008 she has concentrated on a burgeoning career as a crime writer a former president of the old eleans club she was the first female head of school in 1974-75 she had previously served as a governor from 2000-2005 she replaces mrs beverley aspinall managing director of fortnum and mason a governor since 2008 who resigned with regret earlier this year 8

king s news let s hear it for the boys and girls singing hits from the 80s poetry pleases as `emma from the archers pays a visit following the success of poetry sessions she gave during curriculum day at king s acremont emerald o hanrahan who plays emma grundy in the archers has offered to give speech and drama lessons to pupils in the summer term emerald grew up in cambridge and started acting in local plays when she was ten her first role was in the lion the witch and the wardrobe at the adc theatre when she was 18 she appeared as miranda in the tempest at the arts theatre and won a place at the bristol old vic theatre school in 2006 as one of only four girls where she completed a degree in professional acting in her final year at drama school she played juliet in a production of romeo and juliet at the old vic she also won the prestigious carleton hobbs radio drama award winning a contract with the bbc radio drama company she has taken part in 40 productions for bbc radio 3 4 and 7 and can be heard as dora in kafka the musical on radio 3 on 17 april which also stars david tennant as franz kafka blaze of colour the cast of junior school s back to the 80s picture keith heppell cambridge evening news a smash hit that was the verdict from audiences who flocked to the hayward theatre to see junior school s production of back to the 80s when the likes of madonna michael jackson and lionel richie were dominating the pop charts the show was staged for three nights and parents and friends entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing in 1980s gear on the last night the cast of 32 sang 25 songs including let s hear it for the boys video killed the radio star walking on sunshine the final countdown and dancing on the ceiling junior school s director of music neil porter-thaw said this has been a wonderful collaborative effort which has involved every member of the junior school staff in one way or another and we have had terrific support from our parents who have helped with amazing costumes and props countertenor returns to his roots one of the world s leading countertenors for nearly 30 years old elean james bowman returns to ely cathedral on 25 june for a unique performance and special evening of james bowman music and reminisces memories his exceptional career spans opera oratorio contemporary music and solo recitals he has appeared at almost every major opera house worldwide including la scala milan amsterdam paris aix-enprovence sydney verona vienna strasbourg and san francisco and has made over 180 recordings with all the major record labels this special evening will include reminisces about his professional career and memories as a boy chorister at ely accompanied by pianist andrew plant the evening will include popular works by tallis gibbons purcell handel vaughan williams gurney finzi and britten all proceeds from this concert benefit ely cathedral trust which was established to ensure the longevity of the beautiful historic building and its long-standing world famous tradition of choral music old eleans and families of current pupils will be able to buy tickets for the concert at a reduced rate of £20 to include preconcert reception £12 and £8 mention your connection with king s when contacting the cathedral box office tel 01353 660349 poetry please emerald o hanrahan making new fans at king s acremont from left jesse dennis saoirse hann-mills olivia thomas becky van wright charlie jeffreys robyn henry-jones and james wilkinson `lunchtime live the third in the 2010-11 series of market day `lunchtime live concerts will be given by king s musicians in st mary s church on thursday 26 may at 1.10pm the initiative was launched to give student musicians more `out of school opportunities to perform in public the fourth in the series will be held on 23 june in ely cathedral 9

king s news trio of national judo champions king s can boast three national judo champions sam tonge won the public schools national judo championship intermediate under 16 under 66kg title at high wycombe judo centre in the semi-final sam who is only just 15 managed to throw a tough opponent from harrow school but hurt his knee in the process despite this he managed to throw his final opponent and score a waza-ari to win the contest sam is a former national prep schools champion following in his footsteps are junior school pupils 11-year-old robbie hayes and nine-year-old manon lachmann both iaps national champions robbie was also a championship winner in 2010 judo is an increasingly popular afterschool sport at king s where weekly coaching sessions are run by tony eadson in the morbey hall he is happy to talk to any parents interested in taking up the martial art which originated in japan and has been an olympic sport since 1932 champion christopher congratulations to 13-yearold christopher le who won the national boys black belt middleweight title at the english tae kwon do championship open staged at the international centre in telford christopher was one of 27 boys in competition for the title he fought three rounds to reach the final manon shows the technique that won her a national title junior champions manon lachmann and robbie hayes with their trophies captain selected oliver pleasants was selected to represent the eastern region at the isfa independent schools football association under 13 football festival at repton school the centre midfielder is captain of junior school s under 13-team sam tonge showjumpers compete laura clinches single sculls victory at the `nationals rhianna jones was an individual show jumping finalist at the national schools equestrian championships at addington manor in buckinghamshire she clocked the fastest round in her class but was unlucky to pick up four faults after clipping the last pole rhianna with matthew collier tom collier and daniel hayes also qualified for the final of the team event the course for the final was much bigger and technically much harder than the qualifier with tricky twists and awkward distances between jumps every member of the king s team rose to the challenge and did well with matthew producing the best round the king s team was placed ninth overall top cross country team there were 18 king s entries in cambridgeshire aa cross fastest finishers country from left heloise championships pinto rebecca at priory park daniel and freia st neots the gould youngest pupils ­ the under-11 girls rebecca daniel freia gould heloise pinto india thomas and kirsten young ­ took pride of place when they won the team award the team award goes to the best combined times of the first three of a team s runners and the excellent times recorded by rebecca 7min 50sec freia 8.27 and heloise 9.14 put them nine seconds ahead of their nearest rivals king s under-15 boys team of lewis carrier joshua oliver and simon kumar were also among the medallists finishing in third place winter winner laura sibson two king s crews ­ the j16 coxless quad and the women s j15 quad ­ have been selected to represent the eastern region at the junior inter-regional championships at nottingham in april king s scullers produced impressive performances in the third and final leg of the cambridge winter league head race the times for the january and february legs of the race are added to the results from the third leg to establish winners for each of the race categories laura sibson won the wj15 single sculls while phoebe bradbury sculling with libby milne from soham village college clinched victory in the wj16 double sculls beating their nearest rivals from st ives by more than 30 seconds despite being a whole year younger than their opponents tim mitchell has also done well in his winter league events rhianna jones matthew collier tom collier and daniel hayes team show jumping finalists at the national schools equestrian championships 11
