may 2011 on hate that is really love my dear parents and guardians every year the mothers club sponsors a mother-son mass and dinner for the graduating class mr fitz picks one boy to speak on behalf of the class to all the mothers who are present last year justin campbell was most eloquent in a speech which clearly showed his love and respect for his mother when the mass was over i went to congratulate justin and his mother his mother was standing there with a dazed look on her face and said to me i thought he hated me right then and there i knew i was talking to a very good mother boys will let you think that they hate you when you make them do what they should do when they don t want to do it although they won t let you know it deep down inside they know that you are acting in their best interest because you love them so very much of course the general rule never applies to every boy there are always exceptions one day i was in the corridor in saint joseph hall as mrs hubbard one of our religion teachers and her son moses were about to pass each other in the hallway moses stopped and kissed his mother and went on his way rare is the boy who would do that most boys would have probably run in the opposite direction if they saw their mother coming down the hall it s not that they don t love their mother and it s really not that they are embarrassed by their mother it s just not the cool thing to do recently i have read two biographies of lady randolph churchill winston s mother like all victorian mothers she was somewhat aloof from her children who were brought up by nannies winston was always begging her to come visit him at school but she and his father rarely came the greatest influence at that time in his young life was his nanny mrs everest whom he called woom she was his confidante and his companion one day she visited him at his school harrow and winston proudly brought her about the campus showing her everything and introducing her to everyone some of his schoolmates were appalled that he would be so effusive about a servant in actual fact mrs everest had served in the place of his mother to say that churchill was an unusual boy would be an understatement fortunately after his father died and winston grew into adulthood his mother and he became very close even when she married a second time to a man two weeks older than her son and a third time to a man five years younger than her son you might have the exceptional son who lets you know very clearly how much he loves you and who shows that through his affection for you that is a singular grace for which you should be most grateful if however you are the mother of a normal boy don t be discouraged while he might not tell you he loves you very dearly and counts on your love so the next time that you thwart his divine will and he tells you that he hates you just smile and thank him for the compliment it really means that he loves you brother james m kelly c.f.x.

dear parents students and friends of the mount for some there is nothing more exaggerated than the place of athletics in a young man s life now that i have your attention let me also tell you that it is equally true that there is nothing more underestimated by some than the place of athletics in a young man s life the happy balance of perspective is missing in so many approaches to high school sports and the situation today is one that bears more of the negative marks of what we see in college and in professional sports than it should in my own situation growing up i was a baseball player a catcher and i played mostly on police athletic league teams the nypd ran these leagues in most of the neighborhoods of new york and my dad was a cop who knew a thing or two about baseball yet he never once interfered with my coaches or with me for that matter today s landscape is much different and what it lacks most is integrity and a balanced approach and high school sports lacks both more and more in my view and for the most part adults are at the root cause of the problem for a young man being on a particular team can be the most important thing in his life at that time and regardless of what we who teach him think that is the reality of his world most of them balance school and sports fairly well guys who play three sports there are still a few left and do well in school remain excellent models for those who follow them at the mount athletics can sometimes provide a more valuable and more lasting lesson than anything i m teaching them and thus it is imperative to put good people in charge of them in the coaching ranks it is amazing at reunion times to listen to guys five years out and more describe with intricate detail a particular game or match while at the same time they have no recollection of ever having taken spanish so athletics is part and parcel of the whole educational program with sports we need to be consistent with our mission in establishing good and healthy relationships that endure as good a job as i think we do in this area i am also aware of our continual need for evaluation and review with an eye toward changing for the better i remain very happy with the performance of our students who are in our athletic program who are in it for love of the sport and not because we or anyone else have offered them a monetary inducement to be here i remain puzzled as to the inherent value in filling a young man s head with delusions of grandeur about himself before he has had a chance to use or develop his god-given talents in athletics as several authors i have read point out there is no doubt that sports can provide us with the opportunity for the utilization of morally healthy influences in our lives involvement in sports has been known to assist young people in the management of shame and even anger and this same participation can help in the development of a young person s moral reasoning being on a team can help kids learn how to use their talents to benefit a community and to create some experience of justice in my own experience sports provided me contact with my dad and with other healthy male role models and it also introduced me in a way that could not have been done otherwise to the thinking of young people different from me while all of this can be true there is also no doubt that we regularly waste these opportunities pushing sports as some sort of feel-good enterprise while in fact we are destroying the developing moral compass in a young person s life too often the only message a young man hears after a contest is how dumb the referee is and what lowlifes the members of the opposing squad are any benefit that can be derived in sports at this age depends on the relationships that are developed from parent to parent parent to coach and adults to young people many of us adults are not the same individuals at sporting events especially when our sons are playing we mistake sports as an apt metaphor for life and we incorrectly assume that there is a direct correlation between performance in sports and performance in life we also sometimes try to minimize the importance of the competition inherent in sports ignoring the fact that therein lies the very substance that can help us morally develop players are challenged to set themselves against numerous standards as they take part in the sport of their choice in doing so they are confronted with measuring their own prowess against that of their opponent as they devise strategies during a contest they do the same as they assess their own capabilities in comparison with those who may have beaten them out for a starting spot on a team lots of solid lessons abound here if only we are prepared to teach them parents are called upon to support not to meddle in internal team matters the support called for is across the board for all on the team including those who may be vying for that starting spot with their son so many of you understand this and go above and beyond the call of duty in support of our teams improving the situation will call for us to reflect on the level of importance we attach to sports in the lives of our sons and question why our explosive buttons get pushed here more easily than in other areas too many adults are way too wrapped up in sports believing that our sons actual performance is directly related to our performance as parents he wins a lot and we re good parents i suppose i am writing about this topic because i find myself outside here watching all sorts of sports this spring i enjoy winning as much as anyone perhaps even more so but what i have noticed about my being a spectator this spring is the incredible effort made by young men their coaches and their parents to provide a healthy experience for all win or lose the relationships that are established will endure with god s help they will be healthy and worthy of our care and attention peace barry j fitzpatrick principal
