ex tra ti me 5 feature story minor threat n inept attacking performance by the panthers against the sea eagles on the weekend may have been the final nail in the coffin for coach matthew elliott with just two wins from seven games penrith are languishing at the bottom of the nrl table and elliott has been told his contract will not be renewed in 2012 despite enjoying the majority of possession and excellent field position at brookvale last friday night penrith rarely looked like troubling the manly defence two late tries when victory was already out of reach made the scoreline look respectable but penrith were never really in the game elliott who has taken the panthers to the finals once in four seasons as coach admitted the team s attacking performance was not good enough i thought our work in possession was pretty disappointing it s almost like five hit-ups and then shoot the ball in the air at the moment elliott said our attack looked fluent in our preparation but it s not coming out on the field our go-forward is effective enough but what we re doing after that isn t we need to break the shackles i guess the frustration was clear in panthers halfback luke walsh who will be feeling pressure of his own with continuing talk of a mid-season return for penrith legend craig gower we had a fair bit of ball in that first 15-20 [minutes and just couldn t get across the line it s quite frustrating walsh said panthers attack ineffective as season goes on the line by adam scroggy a penrith coach matthew elliott and forward trent waterhouse [file pic we ve got to turn it around straight away it s just not clicking at the moment we ve got strike power out wide we re just not using them we re playing dumb footy we ve got to turn it around straight away it starts against the warriors we ve put ourselves in a situation now where we have to dig ourselves out adding to the bewilderment at the panthers attacking deficiencies is the fact marquee player michael jennings didn t even touch the ball until late in the first half the strike centre finally showed what he was capable of late in the game when he latched onto a walsh grubber in his own territory leading to a timana tahu try but it was too little too late even when nigel plum crossed in the 80th minute for a second consolation fourpointer while elliott s contract will not be renewed in 2012 he will see out the season as penrith coach elliott began his coaching career with the bradford bulls in the english super league winning the competition in his first season he was later appointed coach of the canberra raiders taking them to four finals appearances in five seasons before arriving at the panthers in 2007 this week he said a premiership with penrith is still his focus despite it being his final season 1000wwd6605

ex tra ti me 11 big marn s best darryl brohman best game of last week has to be the traditional anzac day clash between the roosters and the dragons just for the sheer passion of the game it was by no means a classic performance from the dragons but can t they tough it out when they need to their defence was once again almost impregnable and when they need to turn it on in attack they can they are a beautifully balanced side with a couple of match winners in darius boyd ben creagh and co waiting to explode the roosters on the other hand are a long way off being competitive in this competition they have lost their match winner in todd carney who is out indefinitely and their forwards are not dominating like they did towards the end of last year for me they are going to struggle to make the eight best player of last week he just keeps producing johnathan thurston simply toyed with the sharks on saturday evening and was without doubt the player of the round i know we are only seven games into the season but if you can get set for the dally m this year take whatever price they are offering he is as relaxed as i have seen him and he appears to be enjoying his footy again have you noticed how he treats the ballboys who bring his kicking tees on to the field for him he is respectful to them talks to them and gives them a pat on the back every time they come on he also gives away his headgear to one of the little fans at the end of every game i know they are only little things but gee i am impressed by his demeanour this year best game of this week clearly the bulldogs against the broncos on friday night i saw the broncos live for the first time last week and they were ultra impressive against the tigers their line speed is outstanding in defence and the young ones like beale reed and yow yeh are outstanding add to that a reinvigorated darren lockyer and you have the ingredients of a good side however i will be tipping and backing the bulldogs on friday night i really like the look of them and i think they are the real deal have a look at their nsw cup side and you will see no side in this competition have their depth i have no doubt they will be challenging the dragons storm and co come the end of the season best bet of this round well it takes a big man to admit when he is not going all that well in this area i am a big marn and i am not going all that well in this area however i am a confident piece of work and i think the rabbitohs are specials this week against the poor old sharks the sharks have lost both of their sparks in attack in gardner and kelly and even though i know they will have a dig they just don t have the ability in attack to beat the bunnies i also like the dogs who will be a decent price 2011 championship ladder p 1 broncos 2 dragons 3 storm 4 cowboys 6 bulldogs 7 knights 8 tigers 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 w 6 6 5 5 5 5 4 3 l 1 1 2 2 2 2 03 4 d pts for agst 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 12 12 10 10 10 10 8 6 138 145 171 170 150 168 158 136 68 78 96 118 117 146 125 141 +70 +67 +75 +52 +33 +22 +33 -5 9 warriors 10 eels 11 sharks 12 roosters 13 titans 14 panthers 15 rabbitohs 16 raiders p 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 w 3 3 2 2 2 2 2 1 l 4 4 5 5 5 5 5 6 d pts for agst 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 06 06 04 04 04 04 04 02 120 106 135 128 109 112 142 130 133 180 161 158 169 167 198 173 -13 -74 -26 -30 -50 -55 -56 -43 5 sea eagles 7 western sydney s top marine service centre experienced technicians major minor servicing trailer parts repairs huge range of accessories friendly honest service 1000wwd6395 mention this ad for 10 off all shop purchases until the end of may 2011 133 coreen avenue penrith ph 4731 6250 fax 4732 3863 www.penrithmarine.com.au
