from the director dear friends kansas state university has world-class researchers conducting cancer studies in five of its colleges unfortunately i can t describe here the achievements of all 70 researchers but i would like to update you on some of their significant achievements in 2010 2010 deryl troyer and masaaki tamura anatomy and physiology and stefan bossmann viktor chikan and olga koper chemistry are studying the use of stem cells from the umbilical cord and other `stealth delivery cells to ferry iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles to tumors this could allow better imaging and the use of an ac magnetic field to overheat and kill the tumor cells in 2010 they published articles on this approach in the journals bmc cancer and acs nano and their work was featured on nanotechweb.org the group s work also resulted in two grants from the national cancer institute and one from the national science foundation and multiple patents have been granted or are under evaluation in addition dr troyer served on a national institutes of health panel to evaluate nanotechnology grant applications and gave the keynote address at the nanomedicine summit in cleveland for other cancer research dr tamura also published six more papers and received grants from the fan family cancer research foundation and the kansas bioscience authority another team of cancer researchers duy hua chemistry annelise nguyen diagnostic medicine/pathobiology and jean-pierre perchellet biology published papers on potential new drugs in anticancer research international journal of oncology and anti-cancer drugs dr nguyen also received a grant from the national cancer institute biologist susan brown was honored as a k-state distinguished graduate faculty member an honor given to only two people per year dr brown s research utilizes the experimental advantages of insect model systems to study the functions of genes known to be important to human cancers on another front we are often humbled by the dedication and achievements of our supporters one impressive activity in 2010 involved parents and students at marlatt elementary here in manhattan who recently rallied in support of a teacher there who was fighting cancer they designed and sold tee shirts and raised several thousand dollars for the center in her honor see pg 27 we were touched by their commitment to their teacher and cancer research to help them learn more about cancer we provided several hundred copies of a day with dr waddle our activity book that helps teach children about cancer we are as proud as ever of our cancer research award program which supports the opportunity for k-state s best undergraduate students to work in our laboratories over the years we have invested more than a million dollars in more than 800 student laboratory research experiences this is often a keystone experience for the students and many become doctors and cancer researchers in fact we are pleased to boast that two of our own faculty researchers were cra students while at k-state brian lindshield in human nutrition studies the effect of dietary compounds or supplements on the growth of prostate tumors and sherry fleming in biology studies the role of immunology in fighting cancer we are very proud of them and other former student cancer researchers as you peruse this year s 30th anniversary edition of accepting a challenge enjoy the other historical references placed throughout that illustrate how the center has developed from very little into a model research institution over the past thirty years thank you for being a part of our success and sharing our vision to take a leading role in conquering cancers in our time rob denell university distinguished professor and director johnson cancer center ksu sincerely 30th anniversary edition accepting a challenge 2010 1

1980 milestones memories the impact and scope of cancer research at k-state has expanded tremendously since its humble beginnings the story begins with terry c johnson director of the division of biology and his predecessor dick consigli together they created a basic cancer research center in 1980 and the rest as they say is history 1979-80 1 endowed fund designated by the schroeder family for cancer research st 1984-87 1 graduate student summer stipends provided by the dane g hansen foundation st 1991-92 fundraisers little apple charity horse show and lisa s run a 5k run in memory of the former k-state student cancer research and education advisory council organized 1981 1st accepting a challenge published 1st targeted fundraising by the ksu foundation to finance the anticancer drug laboratory outreach began terry johnson gave talks all over kansas about cancer and k-state research 1st three undergraduate cancer research awards 1st kansas experience workshop sponsored by hansen foundation hosted by the center kansas napus established fund in honor of don marrs a letter carrier who walked 2,000 miles on his marathon of hope 1993-94 dr waddle went to ronald mcdonald house in illinois and noogieland in the big apple 1st graduate student travel awards in memory of barbara consigli kansas health foundation program a collaborative effort of ksu ku and wsu began 1st faculty travel fellowships 1988-90 1st printing of a day with dr waddle written and illustrated by center staff 1st wesley foundation scholars program symposium to recruit and train cancer researchers at k-state ku and ku medical school a little girl inspired the staff shaundra s simple drawing touched their hearts showing understanding beyond her eight years when she said i know my mother doesn t have cancer in her heart but that s where i felt it when they told me she was sick 1995 -97 1st george s bascom memorial workshop series on current issues in clinical medicine presented by george k bascom md 1st june hull sherrid scholarships 1st cra mentor awards 1st annual sunny 102.5fm coach snyder wildcat challenge 1982-83 jean-pierre perchellet new biology professor initiated the new anticancer drug laboratory faculty created graduate and undergraduate courses in cancer biology 1st pre-doctoral student training grant in virology and tumor biology from nci to richard consigli 1998-99 1st rob regier memorial golf tournament center became independent unit of college of arts sciences 2 accepting a challenge 2010 30th anniversary edition

2010 fundraiser tammy ellis the quilting notion and rene radil rjr sewing center dodge city auctioned a quilt they had crafted especially to raise funds for the center 2003 rob denell university distinguished professor and associate director of biology became the director of the center the dedication ceremony for the center was held dedicated in april chalmers hall was named in honor of john chalmers who had been the dean of the college of arts sciences when the center was established 2000 dr waddle published in spanish groundbreaking ceremony held for the new cancer research center/science building reno county cancer council gave special grant to purchase new laboratory equipment 2005 center advisory council wrote bylaws and vision and mission statements beth montelone and s keith chapes were appointed first associate directors of the center joyce bixby retired after 20 years as terry johnson s assistant linda innes development officer for eight years retired she helped raise funds for chalmers hall and many other ksu foundation projects including the ksu gardens vfw national auxiliary gave a $20,000 gift for rollie clem s research on apoptosis thanks to its president evelyn mccune of newton kan fundraisers alpha delta sorority dodge city kan and cyclist ryan ross overland park kan mark weiss was appointed associate director of the center when beth montelone became associate dean of arts sciences 1st breast cancer awareness quilt exhibition by the konza prairie quilters guild fundraisers 1st annual smoky valley chiropractic event darrel loder hair experts cut-a-thon 2001 the kansas experience a workshop in cancer biology attended by 70 faculty and students national cancer institute s kansas cobre program began to encourage drug development intercampus cooperation between ku ku med and k-state and student training project sunscreen promotional packets of sunscreen were distributed at local events for skin cancer awareness get on your feet best of the little apple revue at mccain auditorium fundraiser emceed by linda uthoff and dwight nesmith ron karolyn tacha and jim mary lindquist 30th anniversary party 2002 the center moved into the new chalmers hall in september and was renamed the terry c johnson center for basic cancer research by president wefald in october terry johnson died of liver cancer 2004 the alice d fiedler distinguished professorship was established fiedler had helped fund both the building and the center 1st madonna addison memorial bash 30th anniversary edition accepting a challenge 2010 3

1980 2006 center s funding of cancer research and education exceeded $500,000 1st cancer research center assistant professor was hired in biology alexander beeser was recruited from the fox chase cancer center in philadelphia pa when a friend has cancer pamphlet was created by the cancer resource network of manhattan fundraisers los potrillos restaurant and lilacs on the prairie both in manhattan 1st briggs auto jeep jamboree 1st raise the roof live broadcast by john anderson and sunny 102.5fm 2nd konza prairie quilters guild breast cancer awareness exhibition mary l vanier nuclear magnetic resonance laboratory opened in chalmers hall 2008 k-state sustained over $8,000,000 in tornado damage center director rob denell formalized a cooperative relationship between our center and the ku cancer center center joined the midwest cancer alliance a network of cancer research and treatment institutes fundraisers by 9-year-olds mason wolfe started the mason s wish fund in honor of her father s struggle with brain cancer more about mason on pg 24 seth carlson collected donations at his parents business inspired by his mom s involvement in the tough enough to wear pink rodeo these organizations have supported k-state cancer research since the 80s american legion auxiliary local unit #17 and state organization eagles and auxiliary local #2468 and state organizations national assoc of postmasters of the u.s kansas chapter #13 veterans of foreign wars post and auxiliary local #1786 2007 center s community involvement grew to include working with groups like the manhattan cancer awareness committee hot topics planning committee manhattan and junction city clean indoor air advocacy groups and cancer resource network fundraisers winter expressions musical gala by katharina bossmann 1st cats against cancer by alpha kappa psi k-state business fraternity fundraisers frank beer dave lewis mercy light weight loss challenge fishin for a cure in lon doll s memory independence and fredonia high schools cancer awareness nights 1st clifford veatch memorial chickenhawk fry 2009 the center created a new look with an updated logo and website 1st kvra tough enough to wear pink rodeo the center maintained over $500,000 in annual funding despite the worst recession since the great depression 4 accepting a challenge 2010 30th anniversary edition

1980 statement of purpose the cancer research center s purpose was established by three great visionaries dick consigli terry c johnson and george s bascom md ironically they were all lost to cancer but their legacy lives on at k-state consigli was responsible for getting the center designated by the board of regents johnson dreamed of encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to cancer research it was challenging but he initiated some departmental and faculty relationships that continue today bascom wanted people in the medical profession and the community to learn about the concepts of basic research and to understand the critical importance of these pursuits johnson initiated cancer biology courses and began working with faculty researchers to create a focus on cancer research bascom helped create the advisory council to which k-state president duane acker made the first appointments including physicians teachers business people and other k-state supporters over the years these people served as powerful advocates and contributed their expertise and time to help the center advance the world s knowledge about cancer as k-state works towards its goal to become recognized as a top 50 public research university the center serves as a model of interdisciplinary research encouraging the sharing of information equipment and expertise and demonstrating the power of joint efforts vision the kansas state university johnson cancer research center will take a leading role in conquering cancers in our time mission further the understanding of cancers by funding basic cancer research and by supporting higher education training and public outreach goals improve cancer-related research and education provide scholarships and fellowships enrich the student experience educate citizens about cancer and cancer research in 2005 the advisory council formulated these official statements of purpose they wrote bylaws to govern their function and formalized their long tradition of advocacy 6 accepting a challenge 2010 30th anniversary edition

1980 research funding innovative research awards in order to be competitive for significant funding from national agencies and private foundations researchers must demonstrate the potential of their proposed studies the center provides funds for new research projects whether by new faculty or established faculty pursuing new areas of study in 2010 the center provided more than $176,926 biochemistry gerald reeck professor project gossypol apogossypol armet a compound from cotton seed and a semi-synthetic variant of it are cell-death inducing agents currently being studied as anticancer drugs one likely target for these compounds is a protein which helps keep cancer cells from entering programmed cell death 25,000 yasuaki hiromasa research asst professor project inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase with a new class of inhibitor normal cells depend on two mechanisms to produce energy 1 a process converts sugars into a relatively small amount of energy 2 in a process requiring oxygen much more energy is generated in most early stage cancer cells this dual process is blocked this research is focused on causing a reversal of this blockage which is known to result in the natural death of the cancer cell $18,000 anna zolkiewska assoc professor project micrornas and the function of the oncogenic fusion protein pax7-fkhr alveolar rhabdomyosarcomas are aggressive pediatric tumors of connective tissues these tumors are often caused by an abnormal protein when this protein is present cells are unable to maintain normal functions which contribute to cancer progression $25,000 alexander beeser asst professor project generation of single chain variable region scfv antibodies to oncologically relevant protein targets it is important to understand how genes and proteins contribute to cancer development antibodies are tools that help researchers identify the differences between normal and cancer cells this team is developing a way to rapidly generate recombinant antibodies to be used as tools to gain a better understanding of two different cancer relevant proteins $3,450 jeroen roelofs asst professor project the role of proteasome chaperone gankyrin in hepatocellular carcinomas primary liver cancers are the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the world the team discovered an important role of a protein in the assembly of a complex important for degrading of specific proteins the aim of this research is to understand the roles of this function and proteasome levels in general in the development of liver cancers 15,776 biology katsura asano assoc professor project innovative methods to study the ribosome and protein synthesis whose alteration can cause tumorigenesis protein synthesis is an essential cellular process changes in this process lead to disruption in the cell cycle and growth this team will study malignant tumor progression related to the uncontrolled regulation in protein synthesis $10 350 10 accepting a challenge 2010 30th anniversary edition

2010 chemistry christer aakerÖy professor project synthesis and solubility of co-crystals of anticancer compounds the efficiency of any anti-cancer agent is determined by a combination of chemical and physical properties many of which can be altered by changing the nature of the solid material that houses the active component the team s goal is to fine-tune critical physical properties of antitumor agents 15,000 clinical sciences jean-pierre perchellet professor project antitumor activity of novel synthetic quinazoliniminium salts novel chloride salts synthesized by sundeep rayat chemistry will be tested for their antitumor activity the goal of this collaborative project is to clarify structure-bioactivity relationships identify the most potent antitumor lead compounds and characterize their molecular targets and mechanisms of action in order to seek extramural support for further drug development studies 19,670 sherry fleming asst professor project beta2 glycoprotein inhibition of angiogenesis and thrombosis in cancer during tumor enlargement and metastasis new blood vessels are formed and microparticles are released this team will purify a protein and examine its role in preventing blood vessel formation and blood clots in metastases $10,000 chemical engineering vikas berry asst professor project characterization of the electrical and detection properties of ultrasensitive and highlyspecific graphene sensors for cancer marker the objective of this research is to conduct a detailed feasibility study on the use of the ultrasensitivity of graphene for cancer diagnostics 25,500 note dr berry received two national science foundation grants totaling over $700,000 this year this funding will support his work over several years he expressed his appreciation of the cancer center support that contributed to his ability to win the grant thomas schermerhorn assoc professor project glucose-sensing in insulin-secreting pancreatic tumors insulinomas some cancers depend on abnormal glucose metabolism for survival this has led to interest in therapies that inhibit tumor glucose metabolism this team will study an insulin-secreting tumor in dogs ideal for molecular studies of cancer because glucose metabolism in these cells is directly linked to insulin secretion $10,000 this category of awards was established in 2003 since then over $1,276,000 has been awarded faculty travel fellowships 30th anniversary edition our researchers go to great lengths to learn new scientific techniques and collaborate on projects new technical knowledge is brought back to k-state to keep us at the cutting edge of research since 1996 more than $40,000 has been provided for such travel no awards were made in 2010 accepting a challenge 2010 11
