September | 2015 Program Offers Respite Care to Air Force Families Some children have special needs that require unique child care considerations. Finding and paying for quality child care for children with special needs can also present significant challenges for military families. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) has established a quality respite child care program for families with children having special needs and who are enrolled in the USAF EFMP. Respite Child Care is specially designed for Air Force families who have children diagnosed with moderate or severe special needs. This Fall, CCCC will be Kern County’s lead agency for the U.S. Air Force EFMP for families who are stationed at the Edwards Air Force Base in Rosamond. Through this Air Forcefunded program, eligible Air Force families may receive 12 hours of respite child care per month at no cost to the family. CCCC Resource & Referral New Supervisor We are excited to share the news that CCCC’s Beverly Brar will be the new Program Supervisor for the Resource and Referral Division beginning September 14. Among her several new duties, Beverly will be coordinating community events, trainings, and outreach services to increase awareness of quality child care and school readiness, recruiting and building local child care capacity, and providing technical assistance to license and license-exempt providers. Congratulations Beverly! CCCC Highlights Early Literacy in September Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Early language and literacy development begins in the first three years of life and is closely linked to a child's earliest experiences with books and stories. During September, CCCC’s Facebook will offer resources on how to use a child’s environment and everyday moments to promote such literacy skills and behaviors as book handling, story reading, and picture and story comprehension.
