·06 april 19.11 4/18/11 11:40 am page 1 6 beach metro news tuesday april 19 2011 in my opinion garth clark lists the things that disappointed him well carole what can i say i am full of disappointment of late the world s just not living up to my high standards i am disappointed that the toronto maple leafs failed to make the playoffs for the sixth year in a row leaving many of their fans out in the cold they came close as they often do with everyone second guessing the team s strategy since the all star game should they have played reimer more should they have kept nazem kadri in the lineup instead of sending him back to the marlies what if dion phaneuf and phil kessel had not gone through their slumps die hard fans have been seen garth clark under the boardwalk hanging around the air canada centre moaning wait until next year i am also disappointed with gary bettman that he won t allow another nhl franchise in the toronto area c mon gary give us a new team to cheer on on the national front i am disappointed that we are once again in a federal election campaign the fourth in seven years we all knew it was coming yet it s still upsetting to have to go through it again everyone realizes that a minority government can t survive for a full five-year term but this one tried its best stevie wonder and the conservative players or as we are told to refer to them as `the harper government prorogued parliament a few times over the past couple of years in order to avoid going to the electorate the fact that it eventually fell under a motion of contempt of parliament should be enough to disappoint every politically astute canadian i ll be equally disappointed if we elect another minority government because it will just mean that we ll be back at it again in a couple years i am disappointed that privacy laws prevent the ontario govern ment from explaining why a member of the scandal-ridden e-health program pulled in three quarters of a million smackers a year after he quit under a cloud of suspicion if it s okay to publish the notorious sunshine list it should be okay to explain the basis for these ridiculous salaries i m disappointed that i did not receive an invitation to the royal wedding i had the perfect wedding gift idea a canadian tire gift card i figured the happy couple could use it to buy a pair of sleeping bags and a tent for their visit to canada later in the summer or maybe a couple of bicycles to tour around the parks i thought too i d throw in a timmy s gift card so they could grab a double-double on their way to yet another photo-op i am disappointed that no one has figured out a way to `convince coyotes to leave the beach ravines how many more dogs have to be attacked are the animal control people just waiting for a child to be attacked before they do something i spent many summer days on my uncle s farm in the ottawa valley he would never have let a coyote hang around his animals for long before acting how do you say with extreme prejudice yet despite all my disappointments i am still excited about this year s baseball season the blue jays are lookin good summer in the beach is on its way beach metro lane located on ttc property where she can always find a waiting taxi there is an obvious place in the new parking area at the victory park subway station where a safe and accessible taxi stand could my sister got married i remember her walking down the aisle amongst all the people looking at her in awe as she took each step her smile became bigger and wider the reason she was staring straight into her soon-to-be husband s eyes as she stared at him i couldn t help but glace over at my parents they both were glowing with pride and excitement but my mother in particular people have always told my sister that she looks just like our mother and it s true her eyes her sense of humor and her passion to help those in need mom sto-be always wonder will my child be healthy will they have my smile will they be successful this year i started working at world vision and have really been amazed by how similar the concerns of mothers everywhere are while mothers in africa also worry about these things they worry about something that many mothers here do not like passing on hiv to their child this year for mother s day i ve decided to honour my mom by sponsoring a child in her name i want her to know that her gift will help one mother in africa gain access to medical treatment and counselling which will help prevent the transmission of hiv to her son or daughter i know it will be a gift she will be proud to receive especially since she passed on her desire to help change the world for the better on to me i can t think of a better way to thank my mom for the values she gave me and i want others to think of purchasing an alternative gift like this for their mother this mother s day and show her that they ve learned to care from her thank you maryann pereira and happy mother ·07 april 19.11· 4/15/11 1:25 pm page 1 tuesday april 19 2011 beach metro news 7 staff worked to keep paper going despite receiving no salaries by sheila blinoff his paper was back on the ropes by the end of august 1973 it had survived for 18 months its six-month lip grant local initiative project had just ended and any profits it had made had to be returned to the federal government now it had three experienced staff but was broke the immediate plan was to apply for another lip grant and for the staff to work without pay until the next grant came through even though there was no guarantee that they would be hired back that would be a decision for the ward 9 community news association composed of all those who had paid a $1 membership so what made editor joan latimer circulation manager gladys kadry and the business manager me stay on under such conditions by now we were hooked the work was interesting fun and worthwhile we had joined an exciting local grassroots world where people helped each other and felt they could make a difference fortunately we had husbands who supported us my own life took a dramatic turn i returned home on sept 17 after a long t and tiring day at the paper had supper and went off to east general hospital where my younger son alan was born just after midnight i had to miss unloading the delivery truck on sept 18 now that i had two young children i set up a home office and wheeled the baby carriage around the corner to the newspaper office in the ymca at 907 kingston rd each day to pick up mail and messages because of the wonderful support system of women working in the building including betty stephen and lenore diaz and others who wanted the paper to thrive i was able to put in time there while they cared for my sons stories of the day included an interview with violetta nesukaitis 22 of silver birch avenue known as the secret dragon to asian table tennis fans and an eight times canadian champion raynette coker of fernwood park avenue was named miss united way for 1973 a local rock group with a north american-wide reputation and headquarters in ward 9 edward bear and its leader larry evoy was touring northern ontario orlando `ken gibbings of norwood terrace was about to donate his 100th unit of blood to the red cross seven women led by meg stinson of balsam avenue were working with city hall to set up allotment gardens at the foot of leslie street an 18-year-old malvern student died when he lost control of his bicycle going down the glen manor hill and hit a mailbox in a move to improve their relationship with residents police began foot patrols in the area over 20 veteran officers applied for the positions with a waiting list of 30 more the christian science church on the east side of beech avenue a few houses north of pine held its last service in january 1974 the brick building erected in 1927 was razed to make room for townhouses the site had first been used for a temporary church in 1909 at ashbridges bay sand was being dredged from the lake and an endless stream of dump trucks brought fill to form the new promontory this was part of a plan to develop a 50-mile waterfront developed some years earlier by the toronto harbour commission the goal for ashbridges bay was to enlarge the public park and beach area extend the boardwalk and bike paths provide new facilities for public boat moorcont d on page 12 where are they as beach metro community news celebrates its 40th year we would like to hear from people who made a difference in the early years of the newspaper if you can put known as ward nine community news please tell us about them remembering ward 9 community news by george wheeler my involvement with ward 9 community news began shortly after doug white took charge of the paper when my co-worker mary nau and later donna gallaugher and i were hired as company of young canadian cyc `volunteers we were paid minimum wage to organize opposition to the scarborough expressway to establish a community daycare program and to help obtain station 55 as a community centre the cyc is a long-defunct federally sponsored program for canadian youth to get involved in community-based projects which included community organizing as editor and publisher doug welcomed our support when we were given office space at the y at 907 kingston rd we likewise helped with mundane tasks like bundling papers for the volunteers who delivered them and writing articles mostly featuring opposition to the expressway but also supporting community daycare and station 55 the ward 9 community news provided a tremendously important means of educating people about the terrible impacts the roadway would have had on east toronto communities for instance between woodbine and coxwell avenues about 1,100 homes would have been demolished to make way for the highway with hundreds of others left mere metres away from it doug white s paid work was on a recycling and information grant through another federal program the local initiatives project which also provided federal funding to stimulate locals projects during the time doug ran the paper in addition to informing the community about the threat of the expressway it provided valuable information about the impact of the new `opposition politics that led to the election of the `reform council in 1972 which included councillor dorothy thomas the beach metro community news is part of the legacy of that era and of federal and provincial programs like the cyc and lip that now seem almost inconceiv ymca we build your car window and cry have a nice day while you waited for the traffic light to change and felons would beset you on the street and send you on your way with that friendly admonition after robbing you of all your money there was a time in our society when catchphrases of that nature were quite commonplace during the second world war every lamp post in the land bore the notice that kilroy was here and more recently we all have been urged to vote as you like but vote and while i don t think this is something we have to be reminded of it is still splendid advice but times change and now it is time for me to move on to matters of another nature men s work i would like to say a few words in defence of garbage or to be more explicit the taking out to the curb thereof this has traditionally been a task performed by a male member of the household usually the father i m not saying this hoping to provoke a stampede of womenfolk asserting w that they do in fact frequently can the crud to the earth to me this is a matter of enlightened self-interest because as society has evolved taking out the garbage has become a guy thing in most households if our loved ones ever come to realize how relatively easy it is except after party nights when there is a lot of clink clink involved there is a danger that they might as well take over that task too and chaps you know where this will lead in most households garbage disposal has become one of the last activities commonly regarded as being a man s job if that is usurped the floodgates to total emancipation will swing wide and flatten us males in the process do not think i m exaggerating when my father was a young husband he was the one who traditionally swept the snow off the roof after a winter storm but gradually mother took over that duty mainly because dad seldom got around to it when i was but a lad mother always tried to make sure the roof was clean of the white stuff and she was usually hard at it by the time dad came up the front walk after a day at work sometimes this resulted in a few hundred pounds of the stuff landing right on dad just as he was putting his key in the front door this caused mom to scamper down the ladder broom in hand and pummel dad briskly about the head and shoulders in a determined attempt to get rid of every flake she loved that man no doubt about it then they went together into the house whereupon he would go to the medicine chest to get bandages for the cuts on his face and mom went into the kitchen softly murmuring a happy tune news of sturdy but now some social notes that i hope will be of interest to you i get many inquiries as to the activities of sturdy gert mccurdy and i am pleased to report that she continues to enjoy robust good health sturdy was in town recently in the company of her friend auntie maim and the two of them had a wonderful time visiting old friends and dishing out a good walloping to several undesirables who had taken to hanging out on the main street ogling passersby the bad guys took the hint and departed as soon as doctors declared them fit to travel sturdy and her friend have also returned home so things have quietened down appreciably before leaving sturdy hinted to me that she will soon divulge news of an interesting nature so i will pass along the fact as soon as i can ministry investigating source of spill cont d torrontes both are flagship varietal wines from argentina one of the top five producers of wine by volume in the world malbec is one of the traditional red grapes used in france but rarely is a solo artist there in bordeaux where it s blended with cabernet merlot and petit verdot it adds volume and plum-like nuances to the mix elsewhere in france it is known as cot in cahors in the country s southwest it is teamed up with merlot and tannat it used to be much more widely planted in france but sensitivity to frost and poor fruit development have substantially reduced its presence wine made from it is not usually long lived however malbec really thrives in argentina where it is the major red variety planted most of the original malbec vines there now were brought over from europe before phylloxera root louse that destroyed most of the grape vines in the world in the 1860s so were ungrafted but recently phylloxera has resurfaced and forced much replanting on to resistant rootstocks so how does argentinean malbec differ from its european counterpart frost is not as much an issue here as in europe resulting in longer hang time on the vines this allows for better ripening of the fruit reducing greenness in the finished wine most importantly here in argentina it is bottled straight up often edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer educator judge consultant 416-261-0855 ·15 april 19.11 food 4/15/11 4:03 pm page 1 tuesday april 19 2011 beach metro news 15 on the child side wanted good hockey coach ve been a hockey mom now for cumulatively a dozen christine years everything you ve ever heard about minor hockey we ve ex yerrill perienced from concussions and broken bones to frigid 6 a.m practices and tournaments in places too forgettable to name and we ve seen all kinds of coaches as the tryouts for the 2011-12 season are upon us i ve decided to put together a wish list of what i m seeking in a hockey coach it is comprised of the best characteristics of all the coaches i ve known some volunteers some parents some professional trainers they have had some words of wisdom and behaviour that i ll never forget i m looking first and foremost for a coach that can balance reverence for our beloved national sport with the realization that he/she is coaching children we ve met one such coach in the house league system my youngest was six and their team had made it to the championship final in house league the game was scheduled for a saturday night in frigid march now normally the six year olds play at ungodly morning hours of the weekend but the championship was different the tension was high and the nerves were tight as the boys and girls arrived in the dressing room that saturday night there they found their head coach dressed in a don cherry-esque gaudy double-breasted blazer not his normal attire and with a small toy beaver in hand they were six so were not catching the humour of the hockey night in canada imitation but the parents loved it the toy beaver fascinated the kids but he wasn t sharing its purpose immediately after a stirring pre-game speech in which he complimented the entire team for their hard work and commitment for the season he asked the players to stand and remove their helmets they did and looked at each other in confusion with the solemnest of expressions the coach pressed a small button on the back of the beaver and from the furry six inch tall fellow perched on the bench in the smelly and cramped dressing room came the soprano tones of `oh canada and the beaver began to dance the entire crowd parents and players burst into giggles at the silly dancing beaver and began to just have fun again my son still talks about that beaver i m also looking for a coach who remem i bers that hockey is a community i can recall my eldest playing in his first year in the gthl and needing some skills development we d signed him up for a camp to develop his skating and he arrived disappointed to find he didn t recognize a single face in the dressing room i spoke to the trainer a former nhl player and shared my son s trepidation with being amongst strangers for the day he looked down at my son kindly and said i ve played hockey since i was six and if there s one thing i ve learned it is the longer you play the more likely it is you ll know someone in the rink it s because hockey is one big family we ve moved a long way since house league and this has been proven to be true so many times to me the most generous and talented coaches are among the one s who went the furthest in the sport and truly give back to the hockey community we ve met people from all walks of life and all places on the planet who have kids in hockey because it is part of being canadian and they love it they want their kids to play not because they want them in the nhl but because they know the lessons they learn in hockey teamwork discipline determination persistence and respect will be traits they will need later in life in hockey everyone has an opinion i try to take advice from those with more experience than i every year i go and have a lunch with a woman who has become a good friend both her sons played in and have retired from the nhl she reminds me at lunch of three things never compromise and put your child with a coach that isn t going to build their skills and their confidence never put extra money into a team to get your kid a spot and remember the bad coaches eventually get known as that and fall out of the system she also reminds me to ask my sons if they still love playing hockey if they do continue if they don t wrap it up let s face it it s good advice for us all whether we re looking at hockey or some other aspect of our lives we should continue only if we love it it builds our skills and confidence and is fun so if this is your time for tryouts consider what is on your `wish list this year i hope you meet a coach with a toy beaver that sings
