Connealy Angus Success is a moving target. But you don’t stay in the cattle business for more than 50 years without achieving some success, or as the Connealy’s put it – making your customers more profitable. Often, those starting out wonder what the recipe looks like and if it can be duplicated. For the Connealys it’s not about a formula, rather, a commitment to doing certain things a certain way and not wavering or taking shortcuts. At Connealy Angus, long-term focus on leading genetics and maternal function has built a reputable cowherd. “I don’t know that we have any secrets,” Jerry Connealy says. “We try to balance what we are doing. We firmly believe the cowherd makes the difference and focusing on them will deliver results in all segments, like the bulls.” BUILDING A FOUNDATION ABS Spotlight Adding value with a commitment to excellence would be the foundation for one of the preeminent programs in the U.S. When the first Angus females “We also focus on were purchased Marty worked as an economic traits as ABS Representative, mostly breeding well as pay strict dairy cows. And in 2005, Jed and his wife Kara also returned to the built the cowherd using the industry’s ranch upon completion of degrees at best available genetics and focusing on the University of Nebraska. the females. Today, they carry on the legacy with “Our target changes over time with about 2,000 registered Angus females. technology advancements,” Jerry says. Taking the herd from 40 to 2,000 not “For the most part we are trying to only required dedication, but a plan select for light birth weight, explosive and understanding of genetics. As growth to weaning and up on to students of AI, the Connealys have yearling, but maintain a mature size that won’t be too big, and AI helps us focus on those targets.” In their area of the Sandhills, it can take 17 to 20 acres per cow-calf unit, so cow size is important, he adds. As the average mature size of the cowherd has grown in recent years, they are mindful yearling weight and mature size is correlated. “We do want high yearling (weight) but also want to have as an efficient cow Located in the Nebraska Sandhills near Whitman, Connealy Angus started in 1961 with Marty and Donnie Connealy’s purchase of 40 registered Angus cows. Take a look through a sire directory and it’s not hard to see Connealy influence in several pedigrees. For the family though, bulls in the directory add recognition and validation, Jerry says, but it’s more about doing what they do best. “We sell 100 percent of every bull,” he says. “We ought to be doing what we’re passionate about and let somebody else market semen. Its not so much about sale averages, but feeling good where you’re at and putting a good product in front of buyers.” And Connealy customers recognize the excellence, returning each March to the bull sale looking for the next profit generator. The Connealys admit they’re humbled by the success, but they’re not satisfied yet, saying each calf crop is a chance to improve consistency and quality from where they are now. Looking ahead, the Connealys plan to continue adding value by focusing on what makes their customer’s more money year after year. Jerry and Jed Connealy
