or individual institutional website for courses currently on offer students may take up to fifteen credits for a semester and six during a summer or intersession term students enrolling in certain semester programs may be required to enroll in an italian language or equivalent course see individual member school requirement not all subjects or courses listed in the catalogue are offered every session the course selection will vary from term to term and courses will run with the required minimum of enrollments all courses are taught in english unless otherwise indicated students may choose between the following sessions that best fit their our mission all of the educational institutions belonging to palazzi are cross palazzi introduction &academics disciplinary and interrelated students have open access to all curricula and program offerings for a truly wide-reaching choice of areas to study palazzi is the singular governing entity that unites the institutions and appoints designated deans and administrators to each the programs at palazzi range from a variety of short term up to professional certificate and four-year academic programs offered in florence italy the main schools of our institutions address liberal and studio arts business fashion and accessory design hospitality management culinary arts food communications and publishing digital and visual media and imaging and contemporary italian language studies these areas have been developed and expanded with the fast growing changes in higher education and the demand for international collegiate experiences we are committed to excellence in learning and seek to carry out this mission by shaping students who are sensitive towards global understanding as a result of their academic and social interactions in florence needs semester fall and spring the fall and spring semesters last approximately 15 weeks and have a one-week break during the eighth week intersession january january intersession is an intensive three-week program during which students may earn up to six credits summer semester the summer semester is comprised of three 3-week and 4-week sessions 2

summer sessions 1-week 1 credit 3-week 3 to 6 credits 4-week 4 to 6 credits 6-week 3 to 9 credits 12-week sessions 3 to 12 credits are offered faculty the credit system thus works as follows 1 credit hour 15 lecture hours 2 credit hours 30 lecture hours 3 credit hours 45 lecture hours some courses according to their specific nature and course content include both lecture lab hands-on and studio hours these are specified in the course description short programs short programs are offered during the fall and spring semesters see specific brochures special programs throughout the academic year several special programs are offered add drop procedures and final registration the add/drop process takes place during the first week of the semester the last day to drop is the first friday of the semester all changes after that date will be recorded as a w students are entitled to one add and one drop each semester during the summer students are allowed to make changes on the friday prior to the first day of class only no changes are permitted during the january intersession level change in an italian language course does not apply academic year the traditional academic year runs from the fall to spring semester students enrolled in the free elective program may begin during any semester or session and continue indefinitely certificate and degree programs palazzi member institutions offer a wide variety of long-term academic programs listed below are the main program types currently available please consult the individual member institution brochure or website for program details professional certificate programs apicius diva fast four year technical certificate apicius master in italian cuisine apicius master in organizational management apicius in affiliation with endicott college bachelor s degree in liberal studies academic honesty and school behavior policy during orientation students are required to sign an agreement regarding academic honesty and rules of behavior additional fees certain courses require additional fees to cover the costs of consumable materials specialized equipment as well as fieldtrips in addition students enrolled in culinary programs must purchase a professional kit in order to participate in the program students will be informed by their instructor on the first day of class the exact amount as well as what it covers all required materials are detailed in the course syllabus examples of items which require additional fees include but are not limited to fieldtrip travel museum and site entry and reservation fees materials for studio art courses culinary equipment ingredients and uniforms academic policies academic courses all of our courses are taught in english with the exception of italian language and those courses which indicate that they are taught in italian all academic courses aim to provide students with the possibility of enhancing their social intercultural and professional experience the palazzi academic catalogue is organized into academic schools and further subdivided in to specific departments each course has a unique course code that reflects the school department and level attendance policy academic integrity and mutual respect between instructor and student are the foundation of any academic institution this is reflected in the attendance policy class attendance is mandatory and counts towards the final grade the number of absences is based on the number of class meetings students who arrive late or depart early from class may be counted as absent course numbering system all of the undergraduate courses are numbered in the following manner 100 299 lower division courses 300 399 upper division courses 400 499 introductory courses to graduate studies 500 ­ 599 lower division graduate studies 600 ­ 699 upper division graduate studies the first 2 alpha characters designate the school within the palazzi institutional system la school of liberal arts the second pair of alpha characters designates the department within the school the third set of alpha characters designates the course within the department the numerical characters designate the level of the course for example la ah ra 300 renaissance art in florence la school of liberal arts ah department of art history and architecture ra renaissance art 300 upper division course grading system and guide all &academics f failure ­ in addition to the numeric grade for student s outcome there is the possibility of failure for excessive absence see attendace policy w official withdrawal ­ students may withdraw from a course at any time until the ninth week of the semester see academic calendar for exact date please note that this applies to the spring/fall semesters only during summer sessions a student may withdraw from a course until the end of the second week wf failure to withdraw ­ is assigned to students who do not withdraw by the final withdrawal date as established in the academic calendar in addition the following are not permitted by member institutions audit the auditing of courses not permitted pass fail or incomplete is not permitted extension is not permitted except in exceptional emergency situations credits and hours course credit is awarded on a semester basis a credit is composed of 15 in-class lecture hours or 30 hours of non-lecture course related academic activity studio and lab time site visits or film viewing under the direction of 3

service learning palazzi member institutions share a centralized office and staff dedicated to all service learning programs that include student internships volunteer and community service opportunities by means of this office a wide variety of placements are available to interested qualified and motivated students in addition each placed student will have an advisor to whom they will report and discuss their progress and any issues that they may have all students will have an evaluation of their work at the end of the placement many academic and professional certificate programs offered through member institutions have apprenticeships internships and volunteer positions as a required part of the experience students should note that positions and possibilities vary from year to year and are ultimately regulated by italian european union health safety and labor laws and standards in addition some placements may require a good command of the italian language prior to starting thus preparatory italian language courses must be arranged withdrawal any voluntary withdrawal after classes have begun must be officially registered students must fill out the required form and returning it to the registrar s office once this procedure has been completed the student forfeits his/her course credits as well as his/her tuition and fees transcripts will be issued with a w next to each course students who drop their courses without going through the procedure outlined above will receive a failing grade f on their records midterm and final exams all students must take midterm and final exams at the established exam time and date indicated in the course syllabus students will not be excused from or allowed to take exams early seminars free elective students may select seminars among their course selections if they are majoring in that field of study they may receive credits upon approval from their home institution artists and professionals may also enroll in seminars for their own personal enrichment and professional development basic regulations regarding all positions all positions are non-paid all participants must have a student visa unless otherwise exempt valid for the period of the position participants are limited to a maximum schedule of 20 hours per week as per italian labor law in addition students must meet on a regular basis with their advisor and complete any and all follow up as per the requirements of their placement palazzi member institutions are able to offer a wide-range of service learning positions there are 13 main categories of as illustrated below detailed information is available from the institutional registrar · accounting and business · management management consultancy special event management · hospitality operations and management restaurant food and beverage management hospitality and service and management hospitality and tourism management hotel and lodging management · culinary arts and · study abroad office · physical education and sport training · community service transcripts final transcripts are released by the registrar s office within a month of the conclusion of each semester or summer session the transcripts of students who have registered through a us university/college study abroad program will be mailed directly to each program students who have registered independently must fill out a transcript request form during the course of the semester/summer session transcripts will be withheld from students who have not satisfied their financial obligations with the institution learning and physical disabilities palazzi member institutions are committed to providing all students with a comfortable productive and non-discriminative academic environment assistance is offered to students who have demonstrable and/or documented learning disabilities students should note that they may not have the same level of services and facilities available to them as their home institution palazzi member institutions offer separate exam rooms extra time for exams and the use of one s laptop computer for written exams all other accommodations must be negotiated on a case-by-case basis in advance of the student s arrival in italy and may require additional fees students are obliged to notify the registrar prior to the start of the semester of any learning disability should they wish to request accommodation notification or documentation of a learning or physical disability may not be submitted once the term has started every effort will be made to accommodate students with physical disabilities it has been the experience of member institutions that students with mobility difficulties find the city of florence to be an uncomfortable environment with its ancient cobble stone streets narrow and uneven pavements steep steps and lack of elevators palazzi introduction &academics italian language requirement all semester fall spring and summer students are required to enroll in an italian language course or equivalent students are not required to take italian during the intersession or individual summer sessions please refer to the
