t hey have filed approximately 40,000 stories between them and know how to tell a cracking whale yarn when called upon nigel and lynn lelean have been an omnipresent media force on the nsw mid-nor th coast for decades and between them have clocked up almost half a century of breaking news nigel a former television cameraman and lynn a tv reporter have been based on the mid-north coast for their entire media careers it is a place where a dramatic whale story can capture a community s attention for weeks on end for nigel who star ted his career in the ear ly 198 0 s working with 16mm film his first big whale story came i n the m i d -198 0 s w h en a pod of w ha l es beach ed themselves at crowdy head the locals were like `beauty we ll chop them up for bait but it was really the time when saving the whales was becoming popular nigel said eventually the ocean mammals were towed in trailers by four-wheel-drive from south beach to the fishing harbour and released ­ with nigel s camera pointed at them throughout out of 35 whales i think they saved 22 he said lynn who started in newspapers at the port macquarie news and later moved into tv said the biggest story of her career arrived in the manning river in the mid-1990s and involved a bryde s whale nicknamed willy willy first became trapped in the river by a sandbar he eventually stayed in the water way for 101 days avoiding inventive attempts to move him into the ocean and as the days wore on footage of willy was beamed into capital cities across australia and the world he was like a scarlet pimpernel lynn said a large-scale attempt involving boats full of people hitting pipes specially made nets expert whale staff from seaworld and killer whale songs to scare him into 4 lifestyle magazine

for 25 years the laurieton resident has ensured the safe arrival of hundreds of thousands of letters parcels and back in the day telegrams however there is one delivery neville is glad he did not have to make fourteen years ago his wife of 33 years karen went into labour with their second child t he fath e r of-t wo wa s fo rced to r us h to th e po r t macquarie base hospital only just avoiding a roadside delivery of his daughter abbey as one of eight children neville was born in bombay india to british parents he moved to australia in 1966 at the age of 12 as an adult he knew he wanted to share his life with children but it did not come easy just as neville admitted it took a lot of work to catch a 15-year-old karen s attention all those years ago it took the couple eight years to fall pregnant with their first child keegan even though the couple resorted to ivf they eventually fell pregnant naturally t hey had g iven up hope of havi ng ch i l d ren and decided to use their remaining savings for a trip to the uk three months later keegan named after an english soccer player was conceived then eight years later the day before karen s 40th birthday the couple discovered they were pregnant again we had a party for her birthday and karen s sisters were telling her to drink up but she had just found out she was pregnant neville recalled we didn t want to tell anyone because it was so early on neville first joined australia post in 1986 as a telegraph boy at sydney s mount druitt office he helped sort mail and spent the rest of the day delivering a handful of telegrams after just 12 months he put in for a transfer to por t macquarie where karen had family and has enjoyed living in the area since my wage dropped by half when i first joined australia post but i knew it would be a stable job neville said and the decision has paid off he has been a team leader in port macquarie since 1996 and loves the opportunity to get out on the bike each morning having always been a motorbike enthusiast neville was ver y comfortable on two wheels and up until a year-and-a-half ago he had never had an accident on the bike as you might have expected the crash involved a charging dog but it is not something posties like to talk about and neville did not go into the details of the accident a n oth e r d ra w ba ck of th ejobis th e ea rlys ta r t s although neville is quite used to those after 25 years his day starts at 4.15am so that he can get to work in port macquarie on time aday at wo r k i nvo l ves a va r i et y of ch alleng es including occasionally sorting through hundreds of letters to find the one accidentally mailed without an address that has actually happened a few times neville laughed he has also had to work hard to track down parcels for anxious recipients and one day he even rocked up to work in his cricket whites half-way through a game to help with a large delivery before returning back to the game he said he would recommend a postie s career to anyone it is a great secure job and allows you to get out and about he said and if you get a flat tyre australia post sends out the mechanic it has only happened to me a few times and it doesn t take long for someone to come out and get you he laughed www.lifestylepublications.com.au 13
